The word "blah" basically summarizes our experience at Recreation. The batter on my fish was rock hard and the fish itself was so chewy. The virgin spicy margarita essentially tasted like they put jalapeños in water. The service was ok. The vibes were mid. East 6th is known for great food and drinks so do yourself a favour and don't go to this place. The only thing this place did right was the aesthetic, at least it was pretty to look at.

Big improvement from the previous esthetic. Clean and open atmosphere with glass bifold doors. They have 2 large screens for sports games. More upscale than the average pub. Great for light bites and a cocktail.

Loved recreation for meeting up for dinner and drinks with a friend! Super cute atmosphere, and i have already visited again!

Definitely one of the nicest "sports bars" I've been to in Austin. If you are similar to me, and have a boyfriend who loves to go out and watch football but you never love the drinks at a sports bars or the vibe, this is a great location to add to your watch list. So cute inside, lots of big tvs, and the icing on the cake, they actually have the game sound on. Which not many places do. We did not eat here but they are calling themselves a sports bar so to the reviews that say the food is subpar, I say, it's a sports bar. I'm assuming the food is just as good as your typical sports bar but the atmosphere is much nicer!

Best drinks and an elevated laid back atmosphere to relax. Highly recommend!

Food was overpriced and what you would expect from a concession stand. There was one person working FOH for the whole restaurant.

Eclectic decor, crowd and menu; it was very Austin! Service was excellent throughout and we enjoyed trying several dishes off their menu! Began with a cocktail called Roselite which was both delicious and beautiful then we tried a variety of their dishes! My absolute favorite was their oysters Rockefeller which were some of the best I have had anywhere! The topic was crispy and delicious and they were perfectly cooked! Also enjoyed the half dozen or their East Coast oysters that were delicious. Enjoyed their delicious yellowfin tuna with lemons, capers, shallots and olive oil. The fries and onion dip were also just excellent ! My only let down - and it was barely that as it was so delicious and fresh - was the smoked trout dip! Part of it was a me problem as I was comparing it to my favorite version made by State Bird - a famous eatery in San Francisco where this is one of their go to dishes - and part of it was that this restaurant has that Feankin BBQ tie so when they said smoked - I was looking forward to that smoke forward taste and their was none - but it was fresh, delicious and well prepared! Had a fantastic time here and will definitely go back! Highly recommend Uptown!

The service was excellent. Our server was very nice and attentive! We enjoyed chatting with him. The gumbo was pretty good and very flavorful. I enjoyed it quite a bit. The tartare was okay, probably not my personal favorite. The menu had a lot of burgers and sandwiches, which are not quite my go-to options, so we got apps and drinks. The drinks were good, priced at an upscale downtown markup.

The sound and TVs were all pretty great for watching the game, and they had a ton of space. It was nice having the fake grass and picnic tables in the outdoor areas because it really added to the vibe while still being well shaded throughout. The food was good. During the game we shared the Fried Pickles, which were crispy and well breaded with good pickle chips, as well as their Green Chili Queso, which was also excellent. The chips had good seasoning and the queso was thick. For a main entrée, I ordered the patty melt. It was melty with good flavor, but I would have preferred chopped onions over sliced onions. The Sriracha mayo was great and added a kick I was not expecting. The drinks were decently priced for East 6th all things considered. I was not drinking that night and ordered a mocktail variation of their Lavender Haze using zero proof Empress gin instead of the regular Empress gin. They still charged the same price, which felt a little unfair, but it is what it is. Overall, it was a great experience and a solid bar for games. I could see myself coming back for another event since they handled a large crowd well. Aesthetically, the spot is really nice too, which adds to the positives. Not bad for a last minute decision. RIYL: Little Woodrow's without the lames.

My Yelp friend struck up an energetic conversation about Australia and New Zealand with two out of town guests. It turns out Nickel City is considered a must-do activity when visiting Austin, and I've even seen it listed as a tourist attraction. My friend's boyfriend and I talked about various Texas cities, the bar itself, and details about East Austin. The bartender was making faces at the fur baby, causing its ears to perk up...there seems to be a playful love-hate dynamic between them, especially since the bartender gave the pet some treats. Although the bar was busy, it wasn't too loud; it was easy to hear people talk without any trouble. I've now experienced Nickel City both during the day and at night.

I had a solo evening while on vacation with family, as my parents had dinner with friends. I had just walked over from Cuantos Tacos (which, go there, delicious), and planned on being here for maybe two drinks. Welp, lets just say I ended up sitting at the bar drinking and taking in the environment for 3-4 hours. As you'll see in the photos, I got suckered into a frozen drink (whip-it-good) and the Miami Vice. I also had a beer and some whiskey (not photographed). I had a great time, some people ended up talking to me throughout the time sitting at the bar, bartenders were nice even as the shift changed (or one bartender went on break for a long time). Either way, when i'm back in Austin, this will be in my rotation. I can see this place becoming insanely hectic on a friday or saturday evening, but that wouldnt be my jam. On a weds at 6pm-10pm, it was great.

Some bars can get too rowdy or feel too sleepy, but Chalmers always strikes a perfect balance of good energy and good vibes. It feels like the people who go to Chalmers are the ones in the know. Inside, there is the main bar along with two patios. One patio is larger, featuring food trucks and plenty of long tables for big groups, while the other is smaller and more covered. Throughout the space, there are plenty of TVs, so you always have a view of a game if that is what you are there for. Chalmers feels like a prime sports watching atmosphere. One thing I really like about Chalmers is that it is simply an aesthetically pleasing place to be. The white walls paired with touches of burnt orange make the space feel welcoming and relaxing. There are QR codes at the tables to order drinks without having to wait in line, along with a traditional bar if you prefer ordering in person. There are plenty of cocktail options, including some on draft, around ten beers on draft with more available in cans and bottles, and a little bit of everything else. They also serve their own food and have multiple food trucks on site. I think Chalmers is a prime hangout spot on a Saturday or for watching a big game with a group of friends, and I will be going back multiple times. RIYL: A perfect chill bar.
