This restaurant recently changed hands and the change is not good. The food is now very bland, almost tasteless. The sauce they call enchilada sauce is more like a cross between tomato sauce and barbeque sauce. There is no spice or seasoning in the sauces at all. The salsa they offer tastes like salsa from a jar. The service was good but we miss the old owners recipes. read more

Open on a Sunday *hard to find lately* The ordering process is ok, but I pointed to the Deluxe Chicken Salad $9.50 on the menu, but when I got the bill... I was charged $13.25 (with no special requests). The other order was for the Carnitas Mixta $17.95. The entree looked a lot different than the menu picture and asked if they could bring some cheese for the beans (as pictured on the menu). The waitress explained that the grated cheese pictured in the menu is "for decoration" and does not come on the plate when ordering. IF we wanted cheese for the beans like the picture.. an extra $2.25 *dead serious* Asked for some sour creme for the entree. No problem, but also no mention of the extra charge; an extra $2.25. Literally the cost of a 1 POUND container of the brand named sour cream from the grocery store *smh* The waitress tried to upsell us several times (suggesting a slightly different variation of what we specifically asked for), but never mentioning an extra cost. I thought we were pretty straight forward in our ordering, but they still managed to charge us an extra $6.00 on our bill without feeling like we made any special requests *bummer* The proteins were cooked well and the seafood protein was delicious by itself. Everything else was mediocre American "Mexican" style food and nothing to come back for. IF Pancho's is open, go there instead. read more

We got to Rancho VieJo at noon on Thursday for lunch. It wasn't busy. We were greeted and seated right away. menus, water, and chips & salsa were served promptly. The menu was large but we decided on a couple of the lunch specials. We could clearly overhear our waitress taking the order from the table next to us, and she could not answer the question they had about one of the entrees, and she did not bother to go to the kitchen to ask. Our food arrived in an acceptable time, the entree with the rice and beans looked okay, a little over fried. The other entree, the 'deluxe taco salad' looked bare, and stark on the plate. Not too appetizing. I ordered iced tea, the menu said including refills, but when my glass was empty, the waitress failed to ask if I would like a refill. I ordered taquitos, and the waitress asked if I wanted chicken or shredded beef, I opted for the beef. My companion ordered the deluxe taco salad, the waitress asked what kind of meat and my friend said pork. She then asked if he wanted it on a plate, or in a tortilla shell, he just assumed that in a tortilla shell was the standard way of presenting a taco salad. when we got the bill we were billed for the iced tea, the beer he ordered, my taquitos lunch special, his taco salad, then the addition of $1.00 for the shredded beef, $1.00 for the pork, and $.75 for the tortilla shell. not that these were huge amounts, but it was irritating that they were add ons that were not discussed during out order. The food was edible, but on a scale of 1-10, I'd say 3. we won't be back there. read more

I got three carne asada tacos with rice and my friend got a pork burrito and cheese enchilada. The tacos were very unsatisfactory in the flavor department. My friend's enchilada was great but the pork burrito was extremely salty. Lastly we got a berry margarita and it was okay. Overall I wouldn't come back but I'm glad I got to try it. read more

Reasonable prices and really good food, I'm so glad our hotel happened to be near this gem! Enchiladas were great and exactly how I like them, the salsa is really really good (I think it might be house made), the taco was a little dry, but nothing some salsa or enchilada sauce can't fix. My friend got the small house margarita, he said it was lovely. We cannot wait to come back to lunch. Our waitress was so wonderful we actually left a 50% tip. It does look a little messy, the screen at the check out could've been a little cleaner, to be honest. I just went here for take-out. Super friendly service. Had to wait approx 10 minutes for the super nachos order. At $11 a reasonable price for the amount of food that could easily feed 2 for dinner and 3 for generous snacks with an ice cold beer. I ordered shredded beef, wasn't available so I chose pork. Pork was on the dry side but with the toppings still good. Would order again. read more

First off the service here is terrible. The music is annoying as heck, it cuts on for 2 seconds then disappears for 20 seconds. We waited a long time to order our lunch...actually had to go hunt someone down. Now the food, ugh. Paper thin, dry chicken, dry and spicy tamal and that tortilla chicken soup was salty and full of nothing but tomatoes, soggy chips and tons of cheese, hardly no chicken! While driving through this town we were very hungry and decided to stop here due to the good Yelp reviews. The staff was friendly and we were seated in a short few minutes. As someone else mentioned in their review the chips were fresh and warm. The salsa had good flavor with a small kick to it. We ordered our food right away since we looked at the menu while waiting for a table. Sadly, we never got our food. We waited for about 45 min and it never showed up at our table. We even had to flag someone down to give us more chips, which took SEVERAL attempts . We tried getting several staff members attention to find out about our food, to just be ignored every time. Finally we saw our waitress again and was able to get her to come to our table. She wouldn't tell us why our food was taking so long or when it would be ready. Just that it would be out soon. We waited a little longer before finally walking out. We walked right past our waitress on the way out the door and she didn't even acknowledge that we were leaving. We have enjoyed this restaurant for years. Today we went back for the first time since the start of the pandemic. It was still very, very good. Prices have gone up. I'm okay with that as long as the employees get some of that increase. Probably the he best tamale I've ever been had. The Chile Relleno was excellent too. Recently I had the asada burrito: maybe the best I've had in seven years. My wife orders an appetizer, what is basically a lot of cheese melted on a tortilla and served blazing hot. Very tasty. The wait staff is very friendly. It's nice to be smiled at and talked to. That doesn't happen often enough. These folks care that you're there. Definitely take the time and treat yourself. We came here with a few friends last night. We were able to make a reservation. When my friends arrived they however did not have the table clean or ready for the group. They quickly accommodated us and cleaned it. The seating was a bit awkward for our group but we made do. We ordered drinks as we waited on a few from our party. They have some flavors or margaritas, beer and non alcoholic choices as well. The margaritas came out fairly fast. I myself tried a blackberry peach. It was fun but far too sweet for me. For peoples who like the sweeter cocktails it would be perfect. I ordered just a plain shot after that. Their shots come in the smallest shot glass I have ever seen as a fellow bartender. I wish they would put them in bigger glasses even if they are going to do the same pour. That way you have an appropriate amount of alcohol and room for a lime, this way the lime does not take up any of the volume of the liquid. We then ordered food. They were out of a few things but let us know within a suitable amount of time. My husband got a steak dish and it actually looked very good. I was surprised cause you never know with steak anywhere. I got the basically two cheese enchilada meal. It was good. The rice was my favorite part. Everyone seemed to enjoy their food. The prices seemed fair. We were very happy to find good Mexican food while camping near Brookings! Less than two miles from the Harris Beach State Park, you could walk or ride your bike here. They are doing indoor dining and staff were wearing masks . I didn't see an outdoor dining area . We elected to do takeout as we had our dog with us. Our main dishes were steak ala chicano and chalupa. Dishes came with rice and beans and portions were plenty. We were also given fresh chips and salsa-not store bought. The serving containers were sturdy. We called in the order and it was ready within 10 minutes. Staff were very helpful and friendly- I had three servers ask if they could help me! Hands down, the most disgusting bathroom ever. I especially feel sorry for the Dragon Palace next door who are forced to share this facility. I am a quarter Hispanic and have a long line of family members that are versed in cooking authentic Mexican food. This is the absolute worse place I have ever been in my entire life. Not only does the food taste horrible the staff are also rude, and the bathrooms smell terrible. The prices are outrageous and I don't know how it has so many positive reviews. I would run far, and fast away from here. I have had better food in the street carts of Mexico after they were already closed. read more
