We wanted to eat in downtown after taking Christmas photos and stopped here. It was cold so sitting outside under their tent was not an option with our 4yr old. Small but they had a table available and very tight to get thru to the back. I must admit the food was delicious. My 4yr old daughter is a lil bougie and she had the grilled salmon with brussel sprouts. My husband had a ribeye and potato wedges. I had a crab cake with arugula and a side of Ceasar salad. I would give them no stars if I could! We made dinner reservations for Saturday night 11/19/22. We traveled from out of town and invited friends from out of town to meet us for dinner. When we showed up at our designated time, we were told the restaurant was full they had our reservation but we would need to sit outside. It was raining and 40 degrees. There was an available table pre set for 4. I asked if we could have that table. I was told no. That table was reserved for a party of 4 at the same time. They were not there but we were. I could not be given a reason why they took precedence over us. They were not in attendance we were. We did receive an I'm sorry but you can sit outside. We were so embarrassed! Out friends were gracious enough. But this was and is highly unacceptable. Never will I ever again. read more

I take a lot of out of town guests here for a fun night out. Their patio is SO cute and the drinks are so fun (ranch waters and fire in the hole shots). The food is a bit pricey for what you are getting that's why it gets 4 out of 5 stars. I love the crispy onion rings, cripsy jalepenos, and the shrimp tacos. I also get the caesar salad add salmon when I go for a healthier option and it's only $16! I recently had the goat cheese mashed potatoes and they were AMAZING. I keep coming back and they fill up quick for reservations but it's a good group spot if you snag a time early. I've ordered it twice now and each time the Black Angus tenderloin is cooked to perfection! Tender & juicy & complimented nicely by the mountain of sweet crab laid on top. Can't get enough of the wedge salad, either. I could eat an entire bowl of those candied red onions! The thermometer may read 100+ degrees outside but the misters & fans kept us cool throughout the entire meal... even in the late afternoon! The Friday night DJ is good fun, too. This is a cool spot. It's kind of an Austin institution, and the inventor of Ranch Water! I came here for dinner the first time my parent stayed at the hotel down across the street. I just finished a work lunch here (Friday 11-12:30), and it was surprisingly dead. Like, no other tables. Regardless, our server was super friendly and helpful and everyone was really happy with their meals. I had the salmon salad and I thought it was really tasty. I enjoyed the dressing and the ingredients, the only thing I didn't love was the seasoning on the salmon itself, but at least it was cooked well! I don't frequent downtown too often, so I'm not sure if I'd come back here as a destination in itself, but it's definitely worth a visit if you're going to be over on west 6th. read more

Quirky and iconic. It's really expensive for what you get, but the food is certainly creative. My $19 Cobb salad was DELICIOUS... but still $19. The ambiance is fun to bring out of towners. I'd go back for a special occasion but not just a random meal wherever/whenever. read more

Dined here at lunch time on a weekday. It's "just" a diner, but a very cool, kitschy and fun diner! Such an eclectic mix of decor. Everything from stuffed animal heads on the walls to paper mache dolls and mexican candles. (And speaking of candles, your water glass will be an empty Mexican candle holder as a glass!) There is a bar, covered in blue mosaic tile, that seats approximately 12. Bottled beer, mixed drinks and wine are offered. No taps that were visible. We arrived about 11:45 with plenty of open seating. By the time we left at 12:45, almost all the tables were full including the bar. The menu has typical diner choices such as burgers and sandwiches. It also has a large selection of Mexican dishes, like enchiladas and quesadillas. The specials of the day, on the day we visited, featured a burger filled with goat cheese and spinach. I ordered that, with fries as a side, and it was delicious! The french fries were a bit soft and limp. Our waitress was very pleasant and our food arrived quickly. My only true complaint was that it was freezing inside the diner! It was a cold day outside, so they either don't have any heat or it was broken. This is probably my "new" favorite steak house in Austin. I loved the vintage decor & live music. We went in last night without a reservation - first time visiting and didn't realize we needed a resy when we looked online. However, the host was amazing! He promptly seated us and notified us we would have about an hour and 50 mins to eat since a reservation was due at that time - it was more than enough time. Service was excellent! We had truffle fries as an app - they were deliciously crispy and came paired with a yummy dipping sauce and fresh cabbage slaw. For dinner we ordered a wedge salad w/balsamic on the side (I like to mix ranch w/a drizzle of balsamic - try it y'all'll thank me later ), black pepper angus steak w/crab fingers, delicious Thai green beans & bacon mashed taters and a caldo de pollo. The steak was so incredibly delicious & buttery, green beans were crispy and flavorful. Everything was incredibly savory. We will most definitely be back! I ordered the fried oysters, A house margarita, and the special all meat mixed grill plate. The fried oysters were good and tasty I would've made a nice meal. The plate of meat had The sugar cured quail, a jalapeño and cheese sausage and Chicken fried venison. I am not a big fan of quail because it seems like a lot of work for very little meat but it is all over the menu so the chef must have something special for quail. Had a few drinks to prep for a night out in Austin. Started on the patio at Ranch 616. Loved the décor and the vibe. Bartender was very nice and fast with the drinks, and generous with the pours too. There was a decent amount of folks dining, drinking, and waiting for tables and we were lucky to find bar space with no wait. Everyone seemed pretty nice too. Just zero complaints at all... This place is horrific. Service is barely there. If we didn't have eight of us we wouldn't have tipped. We waited for what seemed like forever for our lunch time beverages. And then when asked if we could have our picture taken, TWO servers said they were "too busy". The meals were greasy and disgusting - no flavor at all even after adding salt and jalapeños. The drinks were watered down - no tequila in any of them!! Almost unreal. Only good thing about the place was the outdoor patio but even that had horrible music (Frank Sinatra at Mexican???) and birds that totally pooped everywhere. The vibe in Ranch 616 is like a tornado scooped up an assortment of museums and galleries and threw them into the 616. It's an absolutely mesmerizing experience and it's tons of eye candy to keep you busy if you're on your own or to keep the conversation going in a group. It has a fun menu that feels like an upscale pub. The service was super friendly and made you feel like you had been there several times before even if it's just your first visit. It was lunch during a work day so I didn't try any of the drinks that looked amazing. I decided to go for the Frito Pie because I'd never heard of it. I didn't regret it but I quickly realized that it was basically a gourmet walking taco. It did have some nice chunks of beef and the spice level was just enough to get a little sweat going. Ranch 616 is the kind of place you would think of when you think of Austin...funky, eclectic, dark, loud, and ah yes, tequila. Now "tequila" is not an adjective, and the night that Jamie W. and I came (after a disappointing no-show by the fruit bats at Congress Avenue Bridge), it was more like a verb. I was cajoled by the friendly waitress to try one of their specialty tequila drinks, and I felt like I was tequila'ed into a nice Austinite buzz. It was called a Ranch Water, a tumbler of herradura, a 1/4-shot grand marnier, fresh lime juice, and a hint of sugar water. This is poured over rocks, and you have to keep topping it off with Topo Chico mineral water in order to make the drink last. It worked since my whistle felt wet during the whole meal. Maybe because I was buzzed, I thought the food was pretty good. So did Jamie. We started with the $7 Ranch Slice of Ice, the familiar iceberg lettuce wedge salad that has made a culinary comeback with the obligatory, blue cheese, cherry tomatoes, shredded carrots and Ranch dressing. They split it in two for us to share (see photo). Jamie ordered the $22 Grilled Duck Breast, dry-rubbed and topped with a demi-glace sauce. It was accompanied by a Parmesan grit cake stick, poblano mashed potatoes, and a baked tomato stuffed with piccadillo and topped with melted queso blanco (see photo). Tasty though the meat on the drumstick was too chewy for Jamie's taste. I went for the $16.50 Pork Tenderloin 616, a house specialty that mixed ancho honey-glazed pork tenderloin medallions served with glossy portabello mushroom slices. It came with the poblano mashed potatoes and roasted corn and was topped with pico de gallo. It was good stuff and a plentiful portion that seemed to get bigger every time I took a shot of the Ranch Water. We sat indoors surrounded by all the local memorabilia, antique photographs, and semi-sauced revelers looking to dine before heading out to the clubs on 6th Street. There's a more popular patio where they have live music weekly, but it was pretty quiet the evening we went. We also liked the air-conditioning hitting us in our booth. FOOD - 4 stars...Austin-style creations, big portions AMBIANCE - 3.5 stars...funky and somewhat kitschy but it works SERVICE - 3.5 stars...the waitress is from Sacramento, so we had a Northern California bond TOTAL - 4 stars...good dining choice for those who want an Austin-type eatin'-and-drinkin' experience read more

Quirky restaurant located in the West 6th area serving what I would consider Texican fare (a blend of Texas and Mex). Think - grilled meats and seafood mixed with a Tex-Mex flair. The place is eclectic and busy in decor, with tables and booths inside. I sense that folks gather here for happy hour after work with the dinner crowd trickling in afterwards. We chose this place to celebrate a friend's birthday with a group of about 20. We called ahead over a week prior to his birthday and chose a preset menu that is required for groups of our size. I've dealt with bad service countless times in my life, but never have I/we been treated so rudely in my entire life. From the MOMENT we sat down our waitress, Danielle, was clearly not in a good mood, and visibly annoyed that she had to wait on a group our size. The fans were blowing at a high speed so a few people closest to the fans switched spots with people sat further away from them, and this only angered Danielle and the dark-haired male bartender/waiter that was 'assisting'. I quickly picked up on our waitstaff's hostile attitude, so probably on 6 different occasions I told Danielle "Sorry for the chaos!" "Thank you so much!" And never got a you're welcome, just a pissy smile and pursed lips as she fled the scene. "Yea they keep moving around so I don't even know where this dish is going" in the rudest voice imaginable, or some variation of that, was overheard multiple times by our friends and after 30 minutes of being there, everyone at the table was mentioning how mean and annoyed the waitstaff was. The craziest part was when one of my friends ordered a Dos Equis, which the dark-haired male employee working behind the bar called out asking who ordered the Dos Equis--the person who ordered it was on the other end of the table in an extremely loud environment--and didn't hear it. I'm not kidding, the waiter didn't let 3 seconds pass before rolling his eyes, saying something under his breath, and angrily walked it BACK to the bar with the beer. I get Danielle's attention immediately because I was the only one who saw this happen, she's radiating hostility at the point I say "so sorry, that beer is for my friend over there" she and the bartender briefly exchange whispers, and she says, "uhm it's been handled..." and they didn't bring him a beer, mind you, the SAME beer he brought over initially, for 10 minutes. Just on a human level, I've never been disrespected by a restaurant's staff like this ever. We were treated like trash for NO reason other than the staff was overwhelmed by a group they knew were coming for a week's time. None of us will ever be back, and I'll make sure to have this story at the ready if anyone mentions this place in the future. The restaurant is this groovy retro building with very good service. I ordered the red snapper which was amazing. My husband and son had the ribeye and elk both were delicious. Ranch 616 is a must stop for those of you first timers in Austin. It is the very definition of "keep Austin weird". Eclectic defines both the décor and the menu. I have a particular weakness for the "big Daddy" margarita - which I have them add jalapenos to. The menu is fun, the dishes are well prepared, and the flavors are very southwest-nuevo. Service can be a little spotty, but not awful. It can be a bit pricey - depending on what you order. All in all, you have to be able to say you've been here at least once.
