So this review isn't too much on the food but rather the experience . First off the food is OK . I been here a couple times it's not the best ramen but it's also not the worst . It's just were I go to when I want a quick fix ramen . I came here today with my daughter and I felt like the two girls at the register were rude . I'm not sure if they were annoyed that a big family came in but they were speaking very condescending to them while taking there order . Later one of the other girl bf who works there came and she was just in the corner hugging her bf in an unprofessional way and when he went over to serve himself water that is meant for customers to drink she really loudly said "ewwww don't drink that water it's nasty ." Happened to be in town and was craving some Japanese style ramen noodles and was quite surprised when I found a Ramen 101 nearby where I was staying. There was one about 1 mile away but this one was a 10 minute drive and approx. 3 miles from Hayward to San Leandro and I was on the way to another venue when I decided to step inside to see what was going on. I was immediately greeted by Abe which was very courteous and friendly and made me feel right at home as I just motioned towards the restroom and he immediately let me know it was fine to go before ordering. I had a bit of a tough time trying to find some good foodie spots in the Oakland area and was advised to look outside of the area for some potential places that would tickle my fancy. Asked Abe if we could make something similar to another Tonkotsu Pork Broth styled Ramen bowl that I liked with some added spice and he obliged and also explained that I could make a custom bowl if I wanted also which was a nice added touch. I also ordered Takoyaki appetizer as well and noticed there was a ice water dispenser self-serve and plenty of cold drinks in a fridge too. The service was quick and my ramen bowl arrived first hot and steamy. I couldn't wait to dig in! As soon as I tasted the broth I was content. It was rich and spicy and flavorful. The roasted pork was tender, boiled egg was cooked to perfection, kikurage mushrooms were also cooked well and the noodles had a soft yet ample bounce to them. The stronger use of garlic was evident but I'm not going to knock them for this as many so-called "Ramen Aficionados" would but I welcome their efforts with the ingredients they're able to acquire. Plenty of parking as this is located inside of a shopping center and there was a decent amount of seating although I would recommend coming in the less busier hours of the day for a more intimate experience. A relaxing scene of a Japan street in what seems like the mid-1900's is in full view on the wall tied in with Japanese music playing in the background really was a nice touch to experience. Abe the do-it-all server/host/resident Ramen guide was really wonderful and made the experience one to remember. I will be back again if I do return to the Bay Area in the future! read more

I've been to this Ramen 101 location a few times pre-COVID, and now just ordered takeout for the first time since March. The quality of the ramen is still just as good and service is still great! I placed my order for one chicken ramen through Yelp/Grubhub and my total was about $15. When I arrived at the restaurant, the manager inquired on how I placed my order. When I told her it was through Grubhub, she recommended I call the restaurant directly next time because their prices are cheaper than through ordering online. The in-store cost for the chicken ramen is about $11.50. This is a great tip to know for the future! The ramen overall was wonderful, full of spice and ingredients. It was actually enough for two meals, which was great. What I especially liked is the handwritten notes on my takeout containers. I had a cold that day (hence why I ordered spicy ramen) and these notes just made me feel so happy and cozy inside. We got the vegetable ramen, miso ramen, and chicken karaage. We ordered the fried garlic topping for each of the ramens. The vegetable ramen was pretty flavorful though and had a lot going for it. It could have used more bamboo and the garlic pieces were a bit too big (whole cloves). The miso ramen wasn't very flavorful and could have used more salt. Toppings and chasu was good. Chicken karaage was really good and probably our favorite part of the meal. With tax and tip, these three entrees were just over $40 so the food is more expensive than you'd think. I had a chat with Gold Elite Cheryl M about ramen. She was on her way to Ramen 101 in Castro Valley. Shared my opinion about Mainland ramen. It's like burrito. They don't eat burritos in Mexico. The ramen here is not like this in Japan. That's not a bad thing, just different. Looked up the San Leandro store on Yelp and found a number of good reviews from my Yelp Crew, so here I am. A small store, very charming with a wall mural depicting an ally in Japan. Kindly greeted upon entering, I was as asked if I was dining in or taking out. Regardless, you order at the counter, pay, and if eating in, there's a table flag with your number. It's actually kinda cool, if you think about it. Nobody can hog tables. I ordered the Tonokatsu Ramen and the Chicken Karaage. The ramen came out first. I'm not into a lot of stuff in my ramen. It was garnished with green onions, kamaboko, mushrooms (fungus), bean spouts, bamboo shoots, wafer of nori, two pieces of pork, and a seasoned soft boiled egg. The broth was not pipping hot, but was okay. It was a bit bland, even though I requested medium spicy. I added shoyu and a bit of hot oil. The noodles were fine. You don't have a choice of firmness, so it came medium. The pork was tasty. The egg was cold inside. 3 stars on the ramen. Cheryl M said the Chicken Karaage was excellent and it was. Not greasy, hot and moist. A sauce similar to Thousand Island dressing came as a dipping sauce. Odd, but give it 3 stars. 5 stars for the chicken. So I'm glad I had a "101" experience. THE BROTH IS THE MOST IMPORTANT ASPECT IN RAMEN Try to imagine eating the noodles and dry ingredients without the broth. How would the ramen taste? Your can't because the broth ties the noodles and dry ingredients altogether. For me when I go to a ramen eatery I want to gauge what the shoyu ramen tastes as that is my favorite ramen. I just like the simplicity of that soy sauce broth as it adds an umami texture to the noodles and ingredients. About a month ago I ordered food from Ramen101 to be delivered. I ordered the chicken karaage, prawn tempura, and shoyu ramen. The breading on the chicken karaage and prawn tempura were crispy. However I cared more about the shoyu ramen. From the outset I noticed the broth of the shoyu wasn't clear. The color of the broth was a little murky for my liking. The first shoyu ramen I tasted had an appearance similar to beef consomme. Unfortunately most ramen eateries I've ordered had the color of the shoyu ramen too murky. The broth for the shoyu ramen at Ramen101 looked almost a cross between a tonkotsu and miso. I like tonkotsu and miso ramen but that's not what I ordered. Think of going to a pizza place and you order a topping of ham but when you got you pizza the topping was sausage or vice versa. Even though ham and sausage come from the same animal they're both different in texture and flavor. How was the shoyu ramen at Ramen101? I thought it was ok. However some of the items on the ramen section of the menu looked interesting. A copy of weeks ago I drove here to pick up three items - chashu rice, geso fry, and chicken ramen. The chashu rice sounds great in a menu but it didn't look appetizing. I assumed I would get slices instead of dices of chashu. In addition I could without the vegetables. The geso fry was ok as the breading wasn't as crispy as the chicken karaage and prawn tempura. How was the chicken ramen? The broth wasn't bland but tasty. However the broth didn't tie in together the rest of the ingredients. I didn't feel as if I was eating ramen but separate ingredients. The broth didn't flavor the chicken in addition the chicken didn't flavor the broth. A couple days later I ordered two items to be delivered - unagi rice and pork rib ramen. I really like the unagi rice. Of all the non-ramen items I've ordered from Ramen101 the unagi rice was my favorite as I loved the sweet, tangy sauce along with meaty texture of the unagi. The trend I see now in pho is beef rib immersed with the broth. I never had beef rib in pho before. However I assumed the pork rib ramen would be really flavorful as the rib is charred. As with the chicken ramen the pork ramen wasn't as flavorful. The broth never ties in with the noodles and pork rib. The ramens I ate from Ramen101 were delicious but they never stood out. As stated on my title of this review, broth is very important in ramen. The broth I had at Ramen101 though tasty never makes the dish as a whole in unison. read more

This place opened right by my house, and after looking on Instagram I decided to try some ramen. This is the first time I have ever tried a ramen place and it was pretty good. It's located in the greenhouse plaza so parking is never an issue. We arrived at 2:45 and noticed that they have happy hour at 3:00 for 20% off. I asked if we had to wait and we did, so we sat down until 3 because who doesn't like a discount! 3pm came and you have to walk to the cash register order and pay then they bring you your food when it's ready. I happen to like the idea of paying first because once I'm done eating I can just leave. I ordered two chicken ramen mild for spice, for me and the man lol the chicken wings and the chicken over rice for my daughter. The ramen was good, not anything to die for but it was filling and worth coming back to, I was expecting to have the best ramen of my life but it fell short, the flavors were off but good. The fried chicken was good and the chicken over rice was good too. It's your typical 3 in a half star meal. What I did like was how quick they bring you your food and how friendly the employees are. Ordered takoyaki as well for delivery and they were not ball shaped that I'm used to. Each takoyaki was slightly flat on one side. It did satisfy my cravings though, so I ain't trippin. Update--Takoyaki charged as 5 pieces for $7.99. I received 10 half pieces. Went with the black garlic ramen and I'd probably order it again when I'm craving and don't want to leave the comfort or my home. They were not skimpy when it came to the roasted garlic clove toppings. Highly appreciated!! Hehe. I have not sat down for Ramen in soooo long since the pandemic and I had a great experience at this place. It's more of a Togo type place where you order at the counter and sit down. Very friendly staff and free refills of soda if you dine in. I got my ramen brought to my table in less than 8 minutes in the evening of a Tuesday. I love that I was able to build my own ramen. I got the spicy Tonkatsu flavor with chashu pork and black garlic for about $13. The noodles were chewy, a little harder from what I remember ramen being, but at least it wasn't overcooked. The broth was so flavorful and even though it was the spiciest level, it was bearable. Sometimes when you get spicy ramen, it's just too spicy to enjoy but this was perfect. There were crunchy pieces of garlic in it, not too much of my thing but garlic lovers will definitely appreciate this. The chashu was soft and tender. I felt pressured being in front of the register while they waited to take my order so I didn't really get to add in extras because there was a long list, but next time (and there will for sure be a next time) I will be prepared. read more

Stopped by here with a friend while waiting for my puppy at the local VCA, when we saw that they ran a happy hour starting from 3pm and thought, "Perfect!" Well, in fact, the food was delish. Black Garlic ramen (4.5 stars) was absolutely a delight, with a very distinct and mouth watering aroma, and really nice colors as well. The real star of the show was really the garlic, which seems to have been roasted independently prior to joining the rest of the ramen in the soup. It was so good to eat by itself, and with the noodles, that I started making my own garlic the same way at home in my own dishes. It's aromatic, delicious, but most of all, not at all "smelly" in the way you'd think garlic is like. In fact, it was a bit sweet to taste. Really great add. Only .5 dock was that the chashu pork came in just two slices, which I felt too little when compared to the rest of the bowl. Unagi don (4.5 stars) was nothing to really write home about, but came at a really good price (especially when factoring in the happy hour discount). I think the rice fell a bit flat compared to other Japanese restaurants. Not sure if it's the grain type, or how it was cooked. Spam musubi (4 stars) - comparable with the local Hawaiian BBQ places. Good pricing, and super packed with rice like most places on the mainland. Thought the teriyaki sauce was a bit sparse for the amount of rice, and the spam could've been pan fried a little longer. Stars mostly reflect how I felt about the price for 2 musubis. Gyoza (4 stars) - also nothing super to write home about, but was pretty decent. Per COVID protocol, we received a packet with the gyoza sauce and spicy sauce, but would've been nice to also get a separate sauce bowl. Pan fried and hot, it was super yummy and served as a good side dish with the rest of the entrees. For a lunch, this all came out to some $40+, so we were both super happy. I tried the spicy tonkotsu ramen which came with bamboo shoots, 2 thick slices of fatty pork, mushrooms, bean sprouts, soft boiled egg, seaweed, 2 seafood imitation pieces and forgot what else. On a Saturday night we were able to get a table but the place filled up quickly. Overall the flavors were underwhelming. I should've tried the black garlic ramen. The broth had no strong bone flavor, it tasted very plain. The spicy level was very mild, so had to add more spice to give it a kick. The noodles were packaged, definitely not homemade. The price was $10.50 was standard... but I expected slightly better tasting ramen. Instead it tasted bland and almost instant like. The portion was a good amount. My bf had the poke bowl which came with huge chunks of tuna. Lots of rice and veggies in the bowl. It does cost about $11+, which is slightly more than a bowl of ramen. The lady worker was quite loud although she did try to make sure her customers were taken care of. The inside was kinda small and this was the funny thing. We entered and I said we have 3 people in our party...This was an order and then sit down kinda of place. Well that was embarrassing LOL. So when you do go here, make sure to walk up to the cashier to order before sitting. I would suggest anyone larger than 4 people maybe a bit cramped but it didn't get that packed when we were there. I kinda wanted to try the poke bowl but then my friend said why would I go to a ramen place to order poke bowl. Good point. So ramen it was. We all got black garlic ramen and a side of chicken karage. My husband ordered a tonkotsu but they messed up the broth. Ramen had all the great components and additions I love but thought the broth was absent of any flavor...maybe an off day but almost seemed watered down...I added a lot of the togarashi and was tempted to grab the soy sauce but refrained. Was looking for some food and saw this place had good reviews. Unfortunately, it was a miss for me. I got the tonkotsu ramen and it wasn't very good. The broth was okay but had a weird after taste which I think was from the old bean sprouts on top. The pork slices were thin, small and rubbery. Food was really quick as it was completely empty inside. I think the speed might have been for the worst. This is my spot for ramen in San Leandro. It's not just mine, but many others, too. The dining room has less than 30 seats, so the place is pretty full during dinner time. If it's busy, you will be directed to the counter first to order, then seated afterwards. My usual order is the shoyu ramen (mild, thank you very much). My wife will get either the miso or tonkatsu ramen (also mild), with extra toppings. The bowl is big enough for us to eat everything without needing an appetizer, though the karaage looks good from the neighboring tables. The only complaint about this place is that the parking lot is usually pretty chaotic, since there are a ton of popular shops and restaurants.
