As a ramen lover, it was only right I finally make my inaugural visit to the Ramen 101 in Vallejo. Though I had my doubts, I was pleasantly surprised, especially since we ordered for takeout. Though their space is intimate, it was well-maintained, staff was friendly, and the food was good. Their menu offers more than ramen; another pleasant surprise. The Ramen 101 in Vallejo is located in the Target center where the old Starbucks used to be housed. There is plenty of free parking as this shopping center is fairly large, so if you don't find a spot right away, be patient as people are consistently coming in and out of the shops and parking spots. As noted, we placed our order to go by calling ahead, so our interaction inside the establishment was limited to picking up the food. The service we did have was friendly and efficient. The quoted pick up time was accurate and our minor customizations to the order were all correct. Our order consisted of a mix of their regular entrees and a bowl of ramen. Portions were larger than expected. Pricing definitely justified the product, though a little on the pricier side. Our full order included - Black Garlic Ramen - Hawaiian BBQ Chicken and Beef - Spam Musubi - Lumpia Ordered the Black Garlic Ramen at medium spice and enjoyed the heat (spice) level and the flavorful broth. As others have mentioned, I would have definitely loved a stronger garlic taste and the ramen noodles were a little firm, but those things did not take away from the tastiness of the dish. There was so much, I even had left overs. The Hawaiian BBQ was also very good. Also a generous portion. Spam Musubi was okay. I left Target and needed food. I decided to give them a try. Upon entering the order area is to the right. They had a menu up above and on the counter with photos. I appreciated that. Sometimes, I want to see what my food will look like before ordering. I ordered the chicken teriyaki bowl and Lumpia. The lumpia is supposed to be 6 pieces for $7. When I got the order there were only 5 pieces. I'm glad I checked my order before leaving. I gave them the lumpia and a few minutes later they gave me 7 pieces. They tasted 'okay', but were greasy. My teriyaki bowl was packed with chicken, broccoli, cabbage and white rice. Sorry I forgot the pics. I was hungry. The broccoli should have been cut up and the cabbage was hard and in large pieces. I didn't know I needed a sharp knife to cut up the veggies and chicken so I could actually eat it. I took the bowl home and added some seasonings to it to give it more taste. Happy that Vallejo finally has a ramen restaurant! First, there are two entrances. One closer to AT&T and one near a liquor store or facing a huge parking lot. This Ramen 101 used to the home of a Starbucks (that is now diagonal to the spot). The door near the liquor store is near the register where you're supposed to order. Remember, order first then find a table. I ordered the Black Garlic. Like my review for the Concord location, I am not a big fan of their noodles. It's thick, and I prefer thin ramen noodles. The broth is tasty, does not have that oily-ness to it and not heavy but may need a bit more garlic. They add garlic cloves, too. The ramen came with an egg which is great. I can understand why people would get confused about the ordering. They do have a sign that says order first then take a seat. The name (101) was obvious to not expect traditional Ramen. Not a bad thing at all, but worth mentioning for the Ramen heads out there. The city of Vallejo lacks great eats so this is a plus. Something to get you by without driving the distance. Tonkotsu Ramen has different hot spice levels. Opted for medium as I wanted to taste rather than have it masked. It's not deep or complex at all. For those who are sensitive to the traditional rich broth, I can imagine you may give this a thumbs up. Chicken Karaage is far from authentic, given they use star anise. I would not order this again personally. I prefer the traditional recipe instead that I'm use to. Grilled squid was different. It's smothered in teriyaki sauce which was OK for the first few bites. After awhile, I started to wish it was plain with just salt. Simple is better. Having the sauce on the side would enhance this tremendously. A rating of 3 is not bad. We've actually bought food here before. This probably our 3rd or 4th coming here. Service and food has been consistently good. We have never had any issues with our food or orders. I would, though, like to have extra bbq or teriyaki sauce for the bbq items. While the bbq meat already have flavor, I would prefer to have the extra sauce. Came here for lunch and was really happy that they had the Niners vs Seahawks game on. There is plenty of parking so finding a spot should be less of your worries. The long awaited Ramen 101 is finally opened in Vallejo. It took awhile. I get it. We're in a pandemic and 5hi7 happens. My family and I tried three different bowls of ramen and grilled whole squid. Super delicious! First, I think the best ramen is not only flavorful, but by the last slurp it doesn't leave your mouth "salty." I've been to a few ramen spots that start off super delicious, but by the end I felt like I chugged down saltwater. I didn't feel this way with Ramen 101. I ordered the Black Garlic Ramen. Yes, they made it with enough garlic, but not too much. Just right for me. The noodles were cooked to perfection almost al dente. I thought one more slice of pork would make the whole thing perfect, but I'm not mad at the portions. I order my non-spicy so I can adjust the spiciness on my own. I love corn and bamboo shoots. If there's an ingredient you don't like, you can ask to remove it. At least that's what I did for my mom's order, she didn't want bamboo shoots. I gave my mom and dad's and sister's orders a taste as well. Mom and dad ordered Shoyu Ramen, and my sis ordered Tonkotsu Ramen. Their orders were tasty as well. My next visit I'll probably order the Seafood order. The soup bowls are huge. I had plenty left over for lunch the next day. The grilled whole squid was tasty. It was covered in sweet and sour sauce. The place is set up that you order first and then take a seat at any table if you dine in.
