Just brought the family to Raku for Saturday lunch after soccer / me, my wife, and our 11-, 9- and 5-year old kids. It was wonderful. We got soup, sushi rolls, ramen and fried rice. Each and every dish we had was delicious. The ramen was extremely tasty. Went for an early family dinner on a Wednesday when it wasn't busy. The restaurant was clean and the service was very good. Was greeted right away, received attentive service the entire time and the water glasses were always full. The menu was fantastic with so many different Japanese options. It took awhile to figure out what to order due to the many different interesting options. We ordered the duck spring roll, two orders of ramen, seafood toban yaki and sushi. The family did not care much for their duck springs rolls so I finished them myself. They weren't bad, just not delicious. We felt the same way about the sushi and the toban yaki. They were average. The shrimp in the seafood toban yaki had definitely been frozen. It was cooked good but a couple of the pieces were freezer burned. The food was good enough to finish but not good enough to want to order again. The people who ordered the ramen were impressed and would get it again but mentioned it was missing a certain seasoning. With the large amount of lunch offerings, I'm assuming this is more of a lunch than dinner spot as no one was sitting at the bar during the traditional happy hour time. My wife and I were very pleased with Raku. Our Groupon made this restaurant affordable, but we'd probably go there anyway. And for a place this upscale the prices aren't so bad. GOOD: What really stands out at Raku is the wide-ranging menu. Going well beyond sushi, the offerings here range from everyday favorites to highly refined izakaya food. For example, the scallop eggplant appetizer is the kind of dish you won't find at most other twin cities Japanese restaurants. BAD: Very little to criticize here. Raku is in the 50th/France area, and parking can be a bit of a challenge. And depending on when you dine, you may find yourself surrounded by large parties of elderly who have lost their "indoor voice." But these are minor nuisances at best. We'll be back again soon, and I might even up my review if the food and service continues to impress us. read more

After reading a variety of Yelp reviews I took a risk and bought a groupon for this place. I'm so glad I did because it was a great spot for date night. They have some awesome Asian beers, like Kirin. The goyza app was a perfect balance of soft, steamed dumpling with a slight crisp and incredibly flavorful. We also ordered the Duck spring rolls which were a unique open face presentation. They were giant and filled with so much meat. The bed of sauce was also really yummy. For sushi we got the hurricane and art of maki rolls and they were served on a sushi oasis platter, palm trees and all. The art of maki was so refreshing and only needed a dabble of soy sauce to get the perfect bite. The hurricane was also a nicely crispy fried roll but would have like a little more spicy mayo on top. My friend and I were craving sushi and came across a groupon for this location. The decor is nice and I love the location also. We ordered edamame, tempura vegetables, duck egg rolls, a California roll, a cucumber roll, Captain Crunch roll and a Hurricane roll. I realize this looks like a ton of food for 2 but we killed it. The edamame was as to be expected, can't really mess that up. The tempura vegetables were pretty blah, I wouldn't get those again. We both loved the duck rolls, they were so crispy and sweet and packed with duck meat. The specialty rolls we got were the hit of the night, especially the hurricane roll. First time here and had high expectations per the reviews but this place was worst than any other sushi places that I've been to. Customer service was trash. I waited 35 minutes to an hour to receive my food. I didn't receive my fried rice until an hour later. They also did not refill our waters neither. The sushi that I ordered sat on top of the counter for about 20 minutes before being delivered. The worst part of my experience here was when I went up to go pay, the female owner had the audacity to demand me to tip because tip wasn't included. But she did not understand that the service that I received was terrible. I tried to explain to her why I didn't want to leave a tip but she goes ahead and interrupts me giving me attitude. They did not care about their customers at all! I witnessed another customer asking the male waiter what was the hold up and that they waited a long time and if he can take their order but the male waiter proceeds to walk away and roll his eyes. I had THE most amazing time here... and I'm not quite sure where to begin. The service was over the top fantastic, the food was an explosion of flavors, and, not to be bias, but the company was cream de la cream. But let's back up. Take a breath. I've already been to Ichiban, Sushi Tango, Wasabi, Origami, Seven, Nami, Tiger Sushi, Fuji Ya, Crave, blah, blah, blah. You name it, I've probably been there. But Raku... this was new, and unheard of! First off, on 50th and France in Edina? Sounds classy and just my type of joint. And, only 11 reviews on Yelp so far? Tempting... very tempting. I figured they must be new or something! Turns out, new-ish is right, about a year. The atmosphere was indeed classy, posh and modern with white booths and smooth pebbled tabletops. Our waiter was Josh, and I knew right away he was going to be great. I mean, anyone who looks like they just came right off of some reality food network show in his all-black, tidy, professional attire with vest, had to be awesome. He was very friendly, professional, and *clearly* knew the kitchen and the bar well. Josh got to know us a little, asked us a few key questions (do we like mackerel, are we open to try new things, how's our comfort level with spiciness, etc) and told us that if we were okay with it, he would do what he loves and whip us up something special, delicious and within budget. Sounds intriguing, so we went with it. And good choice it was - we got dishes that weren't even offered on the menu! See the pictures, but here's what we got - in order of my preferences: - Lost Tuna: 6 silver dollar sized pieces of ahi tuna, cut thin. Seared with black pepper wrapped around mixed greens kissed with plus sauce, and a touch of sesame oil. Each bite topped with hoison fresh jalapeno, masago caviar, and wasabi sauce. - Tropical Roll: eel, rice, seaweed, lobster salad, mango, apple, wrapped in avocado with spicy mayo and eel sauce. - Fresh slices of Yellow Tail with Jalepeno and cherry tomatoes - Agi, spanish mackerel with ponzu: came deep fried and raw. Very authentic - takes a true "Asian" to eat an entire fish - mmhm crispy bones. Paired with all that was a bottle of Hou Hou Shu Sparkling Sake. Champagne-y, sparkling cider-y, sweet and savory. An 180ML bottle imported from Japan will run you $15, but delightful it was! I seriously might need to import a case of this now... To do what we did, you have to be ready for whatever and be comfortable with ambiguity, but aren't all culinary experiences supposed to be a riveting adventure? Josh picked just the right amount of food for us with an array of tastes and textures; though, we never did make it to dessert. Next time. Now, go make a reservation on opentable.com. I feel I must always preface my reviews of Japanese restaurants by saying that I am quite picky. Having lived in Japan, and traveled there often, I just find it's hard to replicate the freshness and flavors this far inland. Good sushi, in particular, can be difficult to find. However, the Groupon for Raku influenced me to check it out... And I was pleased. The location of Raku is pretty good in my opinion. It isnt near a major highway or some bustling area like Downtown Minneapolis of Mall of America... But, it is located on 50th & France, an affluent area with nice shops and a large parking complex (free, I might add). The restaurant itself is nice. I can't say it was anything spectacular, but it was a decent atmosphere. I do think the orange-ish drapes could use an upgrade though. Other than that, the service was good--they were very polite and attentive, even on the phone. The food surprised me. Ive been to a number of restaurants that look and feel just like this one and the best I usually hope for is adequate sushi. However, the fish quality seemed very very fresh (see photo) and the cuts were nicely executed on both the nigiri and sashimi. Even the spicy tuna roll was good, and Im not typically a fan of rolls. The miso soup was good too. You may think this is a simple thing, but some places really botch this (Kami). Dessert was tempura green tea ice cream. Im a sucker for green tea or black sesame ice cream so you know this is a win. It is enough to feed 2-3 people though so be warned. Overall, Id go back to Raku but it's a place you need to watch your spending. I had the Groupon, but if I hadnt, my meal would have been over $40, dining alone. The food quality is pretty high though. The sushi is close to that of Sakana or Origami. Ugh...I hate to do this to a local, but I can't hold it back.... When I first started going here, I had an okay experience...meaning my order came quick, prices were reasonable, staff wasn't rude. Since then (last spring), every time I go there, it gets worse and worse. Let's just say I have been here enough to start at a 5, and go down by 1/2 of a star until I got to a one. We have use Bitesquad a few times...and finally especially after tonight...I am done. We are done ordering from here as a couple, and I am done having HH's and lunches here too. Pleasantly surprised by this Sushi restaurant. They have very inventive rolls, a great sake list (ask for a taste before deciding), a modern vibe, and great sushi, on par with most other sushi restaurants. I love that 50th and France area has free parking as well. The service was friendly, and don't miss the Mochi Ice Cream, which at $4 is a great treat. Last night my husband and I decided to go to Raku for our 2nd time. I purchased a Groupon a while back which was nice to have but REALLY how sad I am that Raku needed a Groupon to get people to come in. We had the very best Special Roll, Art of Maki and the Amazing Chilean Sea Bass Yuzu Miso. The flavors were fantastic and presentation beautiful. The service was very good as well. We think the sushi was really as good as some of the sushi we have had in NYC. I think the problem may be the location. Raku needs to be in a more funky urban neighborhood, not Edina. Excellent food, reasonable prices, amazing atmosphere. It can be a little on the noisy side, but it's perfect for a casual date or meeting up with friends. The miso soup and gyozas are both a must. Also strongly recommend the Captain Crunch roll. Price is quite fair. $70 got three misos, a plate of gyozas, three regular rolls and two specialty rolls, which was about perfect for 3 people. Parking can be a bit tricky on a Friday night, but it's a small price to pay. I would say this place is a must for anybody looking for good sushi in a nice neighborhood. We came in with a groupon. The food, itself, was very good. We did not get sushi; we're white and from SW Minneapolis. Deal with it. Anyway, my partner got some type of stir fry. She loved it, and I tried it, too; it was tasty, and it had very good but subtle flavors. For my dinner, I got two of the appetizers. I got one of my standbys: the crab cake. It was frickin' delicious. It was the perfect texture and taste, and it was not fishy. I know what old, fishy crab tastes like, and this was not that. For my second appetizer dish, I got the eggplant and spicy tuna. It, too, was so damn good. The tempura eggplant was crispy, and it stayed that way even after being covered in the delicous spicy tuna with sauces. Overall, the food was a five, but the service is only a three. The service, clearly, needs work. It looks like on a Monday they only have one server, who is also responsible for hosting and answering phone calls. This is not acceptable. Hire another frickin' person to help. As a result of the understaffing, there were long gaps between service. My drink kept needing refilling. We waited almost 8 minutes to even get acknowledged after being seated. And, I had to wait about five minutes to get the knife I requested. Now, I don't blame the poor girl. This is clearly a management error. Get more people Raku! I'll be back, though. I know good and fresh seafood, and this place had it on our night visiting. read more

offered the kids a choice between sushi and pizza and, as i should have expected, wound up at RAKU since we were nearby and YELP had nice things to say. a word to the wise -- when you're out of your usual neighborhood don't play restaurant roulette. read the reviews ... started with O-TORO and MAGURO sashimi -- simple, sweet, melt in your mouth good. my six-year old (WYATT) even saved dad a bite or two. the CRISPY DUCK SALAD (roasted duck with mix baby greens and honey glazed walnuts in lime-hoisin dressing) had interesting flavors but didn't care much for the texture -- my main objection was that the duck in the CRISPY DUCK SALAD wasn't crispy. instead of roasting, the duck would have been much better confitted and then pan fried (like good carnitas) so it actually was crispy on the outside and moist and juicy on the inside. the MISO was pretty standard (and very much to the kids liking) and the SHRIMP TEMPURA arrived hot and crispy. the SASHIMI NEW STYLE (striped bass drizzled with warm olive oil, yuzu and truffled-soy sauce) and the EGGPLANT SCALLOP (pan seared scallop on slices of grilled japanese eggplant with yuzu miso sauce) were both quite tasty. the scallop was a big diver sliced into thick quarter-sized rounds and seared so no great value. the EEL CAKE (spicy tuna with rice, white tuna, avocado and broiled eel in a cake shape with spicy mayo sauce and eel sauce) was not what i expected. for one thing, it's not cake shaped but looked, in terms of design, like any other cut roll. tasted fine just not what i thought i was ordering. the only serious miss was the SALMON SKIN roll that JODI asked for MAKI style so it would be easier to share. not sure what we were actually served but it was unidentifiable and not very good. read more

This is my second time having a business lunch at Raku. Same experience as the first time...the food is fantastic..but the service could be SO much better. You could almost say it is an attitude they have...but I think just lack polish or the will to impress. I asked our server again today to make some suggestions...and once again got the response...it is all in the menu. Humm...I as embarrassed that we had brought a guest. Nice quiet place for business lunch, just wish the service could be a bit better. crab salad, seafood soup, miso soup, play boy all very good. As a sushi fanatic, I spend a majority of my leftover paycheck on various sushi bars around the state. As of recently, I learned about Groupon (which has been a life saver on my bank account) and the countless offers they provide, with one being deals for sushi bars around Minnesota. Before purchasing my Groupon for Raku, I did a bit of research via Yelp (of course!) and became skeptical based on some previous reviews. It's quite common and somewhat expected for the potential service and quality to decrease with the use of a coupon; however, I was impressed and satisfied with Raku. Edina is known to be a bit more upper-scale in comparison to other cities in the state, and this difference can be seen through Raku. Located next to a Byerly's; Raku is tucked away in a business building on the first floor. At first glance, the atmosphere is very modern and sleek. While most places opt to use black leather seats, Raku uses white seats that accompany unique stone tables. The lighting is well kept and contributes nicely to the atmosphere. I decided to stop after work on a Thursday night and was shocked that they only had one booth occupied. The location seems to be a prime place that should generally attract customers and dinner time usually indicates happy hour deals, but there was no one in sight except myself and two others. With my Groupon, I had to order at least 30$ from their dinner menu for it to be valid. I took my time to calculate and ensure that my stomach would be able to handle a big meal. The waiter was quite patient and gave me enough time to think before he resumed to take my order. I decided to try their Shrimp Tempura dinner alongside their signature Raku-ah Roll. With the dinner, I had the usual choice of miso soup or garden salad- like always, I chose the salad. Instead of iceberg lettuce that easily wilts, Raku offers a spring lettuce mix composed of dark leafy greens and reds. The portion of the salad felt a bit bigger than other places I've been to and I was rather impressed with their ginger dressing; it was refreshing and tasted homemade rather than bottled. Moments after finishing my salad appetizer, the waiter greeted me with my Shrimp Tempura meal set. It included a very generous serving of tempura battered shrimp accompanied by a variety of tempura vegetables. This is the staple order of any tempura set. For some odd reason their tempura really stood out to me. It tasted delicate and light-- each bite was crispy and the oil residue was very limited. The tempura dipping sauce was also spectacular. Midway through my meal, the waiter returned with my Raku-roll-ah. Impressed with the tempura dinner, I continued to finish it while ignore my specialty roll. Once finished with my tempura dinner. I was almost reaching my limits before realizing I had 8-10 more pieces of sushi to finish. Overall, the Raku-ah roll looked very presentable. Inside contains spicy tuna and snow crab and topped with avocado, tuna, masago with a drizzle of wasabi and eel sauce. Each piece was full in size and wrapped in a non overbearing thin layer of rice. The flavors were all present and the wasabi sauce added an extra kick of flavor. However, the texture felt a bit dry (most likely from the snow crab). A three stars doesn't do this place justice, but it's not much of a standout for a four stars either; I'd lean towards a 3.5. Overall, I enjoyed Raku and found the quality to be decent despite the use of my Groupon. I'd love to return again to try their other menu items, but without a coupon this time. The service was a bit hands-off which I prefer, but the server did check in to ensure I was satisfied and to refill my glass. But please remember to tip generously if you do use a Groupon. read more

It's decent sushi. I do like that they have rice less rolls but disappointed they don't have sashimi platters that are smaller or any Chirashi or poke options. I really wanted a platter with 9-12 pieces of just fish...and the smallest they have is 18 pieces. To order individually it's pretty expensive so I got the Narruto and art of maki for $30. My issue here is the sushi is always around room temp... I prefer it to be cooler. Seems fresher that way for some reason... also if your not getting a plain Jane original roll it's a little more expensive than places nearby and much smaller cuts. read more

My favorite Japanese or Sushi place by far in Minneapolis. Recommend trying at least one of their hot dishes, rather than going with what you might be more familiar with like an exclusively going with sushi rolls. We had a hot dish that was so delectable I am still dreaming about it. I don't remember the name exactly but it was a an egg plant specialty Also this place has great ambience. I'd recommend one of the nice big booth by the window upfront. It's a great date place. And a fun place to order a few things and share with you and your sweetie, or I imagine this could be easily done family-style with the group. Service is impeccable. The wind my wife got she said was amazing. Everything came to the table quickly, so we could start out with a couple of things, assess how hungry we were and then decide if we wanted more. All in all a really really great date night. However, while I've never taken my own kids here I would not recommend it as a kid friendly placeAt least with much younger children like ours. And you should go in knowing that it's a more spendy Place, but just check out the menu for prices before you got to make sure you're comfortable with it. Very friendly service, great location and atmosphere at 50th and France, and a menu with lots of variety. Their sushi quality is good (not amazing, but I always leave satisfied), and other dishes like udon, teppanyaki, etc. are always fresh and tasty. They are willing to accommodate food sensitivities (gluten-free, etc.) and I've seen them be friendly and helpful to people who aren't very knowledgeable about sushi. Full disclosure: Asian here. Reviewing Asian restaurant again. Also note: I came here with a bunch of my 30-ish year old friends. First night out without kids in a long long time. So, expectations were possibly a little higher than normal. First off: I found this place solely by typing in "Bar" and "Edina" into Yelp to see what I would get. One of our buddies is leaving town and works nearby, so we wanted to get him a goodbye dinner and mojito. And I'm glad I did it. The overall experience was a perfectly nice night and if it ended a little early for my preference, that's not a fault of the establishment. So, thanks Yelp! But I took away two stars. Why so harsh? Allow me to start by explaining what I ordered. I started with a Henricks martini (I love martini's with sushi -- It's kinda my thing), and ordered a Marine Sashimi platter. When I finished it, I ordered a Captain Crunch roll (tempura flakes outside a shrimp, crab, and cucumber, and avocado roll). Okay, now you know what I was working with. The martini came out acceptable, although I'm not sure the bartender shook it up with any ice. It was room temperature. Whatever. Not enough to take away a star. The presentation of the sashimi dish was pretty cool. Assorted fish laid out over a bed of shredded daikon and, in the middle of the bed, an inverted martini glass with a blue light emanating from it. The martini glass made a platform that held a few pieces of yellowtail and some caviar on top to finish the presentation. Very nice. Okay. Time to start being mean. Not one, but two separate pieces of fish that I ordered here had scales on them. Honest to god scales. I've NEVER had scales on my sashimi and here, two pieces from two separate fish weren't cleaned enough. Horrifying. Am I over-reacting? I don't think so. I didn't die. I didn't pick up Mad-Fish disease, but eating a meal that specializes in being completely raw, you like to know that the food you're eating has been safely and correctly cleaned and prepared. So yeah. One star gone. Might've been two, but just one so far. Then, the rice that came with the meal was not sushi rice. Or, if it was, it wasn't correct. The rice was jasmine. Some short-grained stickier version of jasmine - but still jasmine. Jasmine rice is flavorful and goes very well with curry or something like it. It does NOT go well with raw fish where you actually want to taste the fish. I might be seen as a little picky here - but remember Asian person here. Rice is very important. You can't screw it up. And they did. The Captain Crunch roll was fine. No complaints. I was a little too full to immediately grab a dessert, but if my friends were willing to sit around for a bit, I might have tried the mochi ice cream. One last tidbit. The restaurant advertises itself as Modern Japanese Fusion. I have no idea who the bartender, chef, or sushi chef were at this restaurant, and I only ate the sashimi and roll, but I'm not sure what was modern or fusion about it - maybe the plastic ice cube with a battery-powered light made it modern. In either case, it did NOT feel modern. I didn't see or feel or taste any fusion. And ... it didn't feel very Japanese. It felt, in fact, like a Chinese person TRYING to run a Japanese restaurant, and charging all of the super high prices that a Japanese restaurant charges -- but being unwilling to do the job correctly like cleaning the fish or serving the appropriate rice. Maybe it's my Asian sensitivity coming out, but that's what my intuition was telling me. And that's the feeling that I left with. And I'm pretty sure I'm right. read more

Really solid diverse sushi choices! Recommend the sumo roll. Had it twice and would do again.

4 stars for a sushi establishment that had rolls my newbie to sushi husband enjoyed. "The playboy roll" was a must order. Okay, it may be a little silly since it comes out on fire...but trust me-it is amazing. I also really liked the vegetable yaki soba and it was just as good as when I had it in Japan. The mixed tempura plate is huge so you may want to skip it if there is only 2 of you. We were struggling to finish it! This place has a very LA vibe and is a great date spot. A great place for sushi gurus and the roll people. It may not be as trendy as Seven or Crave, but I rate the sushi here better than any other place I have tried in Minneapolis so far. The best bargain is the lunch special 2 rolls with soup or salad for $9, or 3 rolls for $12. I have introduced my co-workers there and have been there with my wife and friends at least 15 times. My favorites are the crunchy salmon and the spicy tuna. The playboy is a great show, but the lunch menu value is why I go back at least weekly. read more
