Food is good but the service left a bad impression. It's during COVID times and we know we should be patient. We went there to grab take out and after standing in line for 10 mins we went up to her just to ask if take out and dine ins are in the same line up and she almost flipped on us saying "just wait and i'll get to you" (in a pretty rude tone). I know it's busy but don't take it out on your customers?! There were no signs anywhere and others in line had the same question and so we asked. Very non-typical Japanese restaurant hostess attitude. As mentioned, food is good. I'm a fan of corn and brussels sprout and their appy is really tasty. $15 for 3 pcs ebi mayo is quite pricey (they say jumbo prawns but i'd say we only got 2 full jumbo piece, one's not that jumbo). sashimi and blue fin don pretty fresh. read more

One of my favourite Japanese food in Vancouver. The deluxe seafood don is a must have, the sashimi are so fresh, the setting is so instagramable. The fish tartare was a pleasant surprise. There were two types of fish in it and they were both very delicious. Snow crab and Uni udon was meh. Truffle omelette was nice but not super special. read more

We decided to dine here after an enjoyable experience at the sibling Kingyo. All of the tables were completely reserved for dinner so we were seated at the middle bar counters. The food was decent, but one of our dishes arrived terribly late. Late enough that everybody else was already done eating! An apology was given when finally served, but at least a notice should have been provided long ago. ----- Snow Crab and Ikura Hitsumabushi: snow crab and ikura served on top of rice in a sizzling hot stone bowl. Accompanied with fish broth ($20). Interestingly I was advised not to order this dish because it only has a small portion of snow crab. When served, the server pours the soy sauce over the rice and mixes everything together. I was a bit disappointed that I couldn't snap a better photo because the server was in a rush, but the rice mixture was tasty. Although it is true that the stone bowl was indeed mostly rice with little crab and other toppings. As for the fish broth, the recommendation was to pour it into the bowl once half of the rice mixture was eaten. I found the broth flavorful enough to just drink by itself, plus its strong taste would have simply overpowered the rice. ----- Seafood Bara Chirashi Bowl: fresh seafood cubes festively spread on top of sushi rice mix with root vegetables and shiitake mushroom. Accompanied with miso soup ($26). ----- Chicken Cutlet Oyako Teishoku: fried chicken cutlet combined with a dashi broth then simmered gently covered with egg. Accompanied with miso soup and rice ($19). ----- read more

First off, this restaurant is very popular. Call ahead for reservations or book online. That being said, we made a reservation a day out and were lucky enough to get in. We were sat at a table in the center of the room so we got to see everything going on around us which was fun. Expect it to be loud and busy inside. Loud because the servers are yelling in Japanese, which was honestly a really exciting part of the experience. Our server had great recommendations for us when it came to food and drinks. We ordered Japanese whiskey neat to sip on while munching on the chef's selection of seared sushi. Delicious! For our entrees we ordered things we had never had before: Unagi Barachirashi, a fresh, cold seafood bowl and crab and ikura hitsumabushi a sizzling bowl of absolute goodness. We highly recommend all the things we ate and the restaurant in general. Everything was incredible and so comforting. read more

After seeing some pictures of their gorgeous bento boxes online, I was super excited about coming here and trying it for myself. (and for some nice photos!) Appearently they only make 15 boxes for lunch, so try to come earlier! I made reservations for me and my coworkers and we were seated right away. The restaurant itself is small but really pretty, there's a wood bar area, glass bottles lining the roof, and a nice sealed patio area as well. At $33 per bento box, it's certainly not the cheapest lunch. But our waiter took the time to explain each dish, which we really appreciated. The presentation was so pretty, I almost didn't wanna eat it! After taking wayyy too many pictures, I finally got down to tasting each dish. Honestly, the taste was a bit above average for me, but nothing extraordinary. I really enjoyed the variety of flavors and the delicate toppings on each dish, but it's definitely more about the overall experience and presentation. I'm not sure if I would order the bento box again, but it was a great experience and I would love to try some of their other combos! read more

Raisu is an amazing restaurant and was a stand out during my trip. Let's start with ambiance, it was lively and perfect for a meal with friends and more. They have a mix of bar seatings, table and booth for larger groups in dim lighting. The service here was top notch. The wait time was a bit delayed but waitress took care to update us and was quite apologetic. Went here for the uni tasting menu and wow. Everything about this was perfection. Very happy with the portion sizes, they definitely did not skimp on the uni. The winner was definitely the lobster uni udon. Creamy and spicy, such a hearty meal during colder weather. So delicious, i still think about it. I highly recommend checking out this spot! read more

Finally closed the gap in trying all sister restaurants of this chain! Kingyo, Suika and now Raisu! Am I forgetting any? Raisu in comparison to Suika and Kingyo holds a very home-like presence in the space. Although there is a bar and seating in the center of the restaurant, lots of seating is actually organized thoughtfully throughout the perimeter of the restaurant. The larger tables are secluded, making it very considerate on their part for noisy big groups. But that hustle-bustle, lively Japanese atmosphere is of course still there! The food is amazing, tonight we shared a plethora of dishes on their menu. * Ebi mayo and chicken karage is HUGE, please get the dish of 7 pieces if you have the budget to * sashimi platters are SO FRESH, I promise there is no mistake choosing from any of the selection * The aburi sushi is a must read more

Very disappointed with the service here. Didn't even get to have dinner. Made a reservation on Dec 8th for my husband's 30th birthday on Dec 31st. Corresponded back and forth with the restaurant and thought everything was in order and confirmed. Paid for 2 hours of parking and arrived right before our 6pm reservation to complete chaos. The stairwell was filled with 10 people waiting for takeout orders and had another 5 people crowded in the hostess area also waiting for take out. Not a single staff member was in sight or helping anyone. No one else was waiting for a reservation or to be seated. We waited about 10 minutes for someone to come to the desk area and no one did. So I went into the restaurant and flagged down a server letting them know we were here for our 6pm reservation. She proceeded to brush me off saying that the hostess was really busy with takeout and that I would have to wait. We waited another 10 minutes and no one acknowledged us, seated us or even told us how long we would have to wait to be seated for our reservation. I've never felt so ignored or embarrassed. Especially in front of my husband who was looking forward to a dinner celebration and thought I had planned something in advance. My husband was very excited to try Raisu. He is a very patient person and even he was so embarrassed with the lack of acknowledgement and communication that we had to leave and find dinner elsewhere. The restaurant did call us 20 minutes later to apologize and ask us to come back. By that point we had found dinner elsewhere and I don't think we could come here again given how embarrassing the situation was. read more

Haven't been to Raisu for awhile, I'm glad I get to try lot of things that I never had before here! I really love their drink menu, their presentation are pretty and also taste really good. I love anything with calpico and citrus, so the cloudy orange (CAD $9) and the yuzu gelato soda (CAD $12) is perfect for me. The sashimi platter (CAD $49) we got was very fresh. This is my first time having the uni & crab temaki sushi (CAD $17) and I absolutely loved it. The uni is super fresh and the sweetness of the uni just exploded in your mouth. I'm so glad I finally get to try their famous Sho Ka Do bento (CAD $36). Theres nine appetizer-size dishes and all of them taste amazing except for the uni shootert, I really didn't like it lol. My favorite would be the shrimp, hamburger steak, but honestly everything taste great. Don't let the dish size fools you, eating the whole bento definitely fills you up. Make sure you book the bento box 24 hours prior to your arrival, because it only has a limited quantities available each day! read more

Favourite place! Very warm and peaceful atmosphere; even the washrooms were very clean and appealing. Walking into a clean, elegant washroom to wash my hands before a meal really made an impression on me: it even contained mouthwash Was delighted to taste the best bento I had to date -- their Sho Ka Do Bento set. There were free rice and miso soup refills; their rice was the second part that impressed me. It was sushi rice at the perfect hardness and I think I would've been happy to eat just the plain rice TvT Bento set was well balanced. Had a variety of fixed dishes that changes once in a while. Had the soufflé cheesecake for dessert words cannot describe my happiness as it melts in my mouth ~ The meal overall was very warm and wholesome. I really wanted to love Raisu as I'm a huge fan of their sister restaurants (Kingyo Izakaya/Suika/Rajio), but the combination of bad service, disorganized staff and only slightly above average food turned us off so we're not sure if we will give this place a try again. When we first ordered our food, we knew that the service would be slow but we were willing to wait. After 35 minutes of waiting, the tables around us who sat down after us started to get their food. We told the waitress that even though one of the tables near us had ordered the same things as us, they got their food almost right away. This is when our waitress realized that she mixed up the orders and ran to the kitchen to alert the other staff. She came back a few minutes later and told us that it would take 5 minutes to get our food. Approximately 9 minutes after, she brought out our dishes, but ended up giving it to another table. In the end, we got our food literally 1 hour and 5 minutes after we ordered, and we were absolutely starving since we also waited an hour for our table. The udon was quite hard but the wagyu beef was very tender. Their oyako don was pretty decent but definitely not worth the high price. The worst part of our experience is that the manager did not even come to apologize to us and nobody tried to remedy our situation. We were also late for our next event so we quickly ate our entire meal in 12 minutes and left in a haste, leaving us no time to make a formal complaint. The waitress was apologetic but I honestly think that the whole restaurant was just purely chaotic and disorganized. We've never felt so embarrassed and disrespected at a restaurant before. read more

Raisu is always a safe bet for fun food at reasonable prices. Innovation of the menu (including literally, i.e., the menu itself, which is printed on triangular sheets resembling a rice ball) promises some fun surprises throughout the meal. The compromise comes in quality and taste in order to pull off the gimmick, which I do not mind. It's no wonder there are 900+ photos of food on Yelp cf 200+ reviews: one meal is full of photo ops! However, every single time I come here I struggle with what to order. I forget what I liked from the previous visits, and nothing sticks out as being a "must-order." However, while it's fresh in my mind the sashimi rice tastes fresh and flavourful, the chicken karaage is crispy on the outside and tender inside, and the green salad is pretty filling with seaweed and fresh greens. The AAA steak and burger are cool-looking but far from the tastiest. Service is hit or miss. Servers are very friendly for the most part. However, it can be difficult to track one down when seated on the patio (this has been a consistent issue every time I am seated there), or in the private room set off by barn door. Which brings me to my next gripe about seating. I pretty much only want to go to a restaurant if I'm guaranteed to sit in a booth or have some semblance of privacy. Very rarely do I want to be all in the mix of someone else's loud conversations. So I am always a little disappointed to be seated at the tiny tables they have for two here, which in today's case could not even accommodate all the food we ordered. Would much prefer they institute a minimum spend to sit at the (empty!) larger tables in the restaurant. The three tiny side-by-side tables on the patio have the worst, appetite-killing feng shui, like who designed that!? So basically come here if you're in a group (reserve a big table on patio) and want to eat innovative and photogenic Japanese food. Is a fun spot to hit up on occasion. Lunch bill for two was $130 before tip (incl. dessert; did not order drinks) read more

I typically do not go and eat at restaurants with high pricing because I am broke. But hey, it's better to spend more money on good food, right? The atmosphere of the place is great. Sat bar side and saw them light food on fire and caught a glimpse of nearly every dish coming out of the kitchen. The majority of the staff here seem to speak Japanese, which makes it feel like an authentic modernized Japanese restaurant. The presentation of the food is A1. Presentation alone is an automatic extra star. I mean, I'm paying more for a reason, so they better play around with the liquid nitrogen. The food was good. Sashimi felt like it would melt in your mouth. We ordered one of the special bento boxes, which are limited in orders per dinner service. I am glad we got it because it contained an array of flavours which was nice to experience. I am drooling as I write this review. I would highly recommend this place, if you simply want to try a new place and aren't afraid to break the bank. If you are trying to get a girlfriend or boyfriend, you can take them here too because that would surely impress them... unless they hate raw foods. read more

Wonderful experience at Raisu! It's easy to make a reservation online, which is convenient since we are not local. Came here for a spontaneous lunch. I would highly suggest looking over the menu and making reservations just in case you want to order any of their Bento Boxes that take 24 hours advance notice or want one of their limited quantity lunch/dinner boxes. In the end my date and I shared the Grilled Fish Teishoku and the Chicken Cutlet Oyako Teishoku. The dishes were ok but not worth the price in my opinion. The panko chicken pieces were all soggy wet when it came out. I'm not sure how long it was sitting in that daisho broth before it made its way out. The grilled fish was a much better option. The meal option cost $3 extra but didn't leave much to call home about. Bowl of rice, about 3 pieces of "pickled veggies" and a standard bowl of miso soup. All in all, left disappointed. I might go back and try for their Zen Bento or Sho Ka Do Bento in the future. Hopefully, that will be an improvement over this current dining experience. read more

I had their tonkatsu teishoku which tasted quite good, but the customer service..... I found a bug in my food and told the staff but she just saud 〝and... so?〟I even pointed the bug out for her but she didn't even replace my plate so I ended up just not eating the part with the bug in it. SHO KA DO BENTO ($29) - FOUR STARS Raisu's signature bento box presented a variety of fresh and delicious mini courses selected by the chef. Some of the items featured in my box included aburi sushi, seared tuna, crab and poached salmon. The signature box is limited to 15 servings per lunch and dinner time. It came with a side of white rice and miso soup. The presentation was beautiful. SEAFOOD "DONABE TAKIKOMI" RICE ($24) - THREE STARS Sea urchin and snow crab in a Japanese clay pot rice. Lots of sea urchin flavour but overall this dish fell a bit short for me. CHICKEN KARAAGE ($10) - THREE AND A HALF STARS Crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. It came with a side of lemon wedge and salt for dipping. I wish it came with a side of sauce instead. SEAFOOD TARTAR ($9) - THREE AND A HALF STARS Fresh marinated mixed seafood with a side of bread. I wish it came with crispy chips or baked bread instead. The cold bread was a bit stale and boring for the fresh seafood. SEA SNAIL AND MAYO - ZERO STARS The sea snails were very chewy and there was too much mayo in this dish. We let our server know and she kindly took this dish off our bill. read more

Great sushi and dishes! Went there on friends recommendation and it did not disappoint!

Best fusion Japanese restaurant. Best place to take your out of town guest to show off what Vancouver has to offer for foodies.

Wife and I came without a reservation and were lucky to still get in even though we sat at the Bar. I think for the cost of the food itself, this place is OK in terms of food. It's definitely on the fancier side for us normally. Both of us ordered the Seafood Deluxe which is basically a Chirashi bowl. We felt super extra because of the gold flakes on top. A nice touch, I suppose. The fish variety was a bit hit or miss. I liked most of the non-fish variety such as the scallops, uni, and prawn. The fish was mostly tuna/salmon (sockeye...)/hamachi and a little bit of roe. Seafood is definitely fresh, but I wouldn't pay $37 CAD for it again. Service was quick and I really appreciate how Japanese sushi restaurants in Vancouver are actually run by Japanese, as oppose to in the US where many sushi places are owned and operated by Korean and Chinese. read more

How do I begin?! This place is heaven on earth. The food, the service, the ambiance -- sugoi!!! Its a little hidden and you have to go up a small flight of stairs to get to the main restaurant. I was skeptical for being seated at the bar for some reason; but boy was I wrong! They did not fail to meet all my expectations with quality attention to detail and cheery attitude. This might sound silly, but I felt like royalty when they continued to bring brand new plates after each course. Special thanks to general manager Kumiko; SHE DESERVES AN AWARD!!! I went here went I first arrived in Vancouver, and didn't remember too much about it so I decided to go again one rainy weekend. The entrance is unique as there is a curtain that blocks off the doorway, and inside the doorway is a staircase leading straight upstairs. It was moderately busy for lunch time and I was served in a reasonable amount of time. I ordered the Snow Crab and Ikura Hitsumabushi for $19, a rice stone bowl dish with crab, fish eggs, and seaweed flakes. Regular stone bowl rice dishes I find very sweet, and this was a more savoury dish which I appreciated. The savouriness came from the fish broth I was provided on the side to add to the dish myself. After finishing the dish, the waiter came over and told me people finish the whole container of broth, while I only finished half. I guess I'll know for next time haha. Overall, it was a bit pricy for other stone bowl rice dishes I've had in Vancouver, but it might just be due to the ikura (caviar) in the dish. I was also hoping for a bit of crusty rice at the bottom and there wasn't any there. However, I like trying unique dishes, and Raising seemed to have plenty of things on the menu I never have tried before. I like that about restaurants. Making the menu feel unique to the restaurant rather then just another Japanese joint. read more

We got the deluxe seafood bowl as well as the bento. The presentation for both is amazing it looks so nice that I didn't wanna eat them. Everything tasted fresh and was pretty good. The deluxe seafood bowl was a bit awkward to eat. You need to make sure that the rest of the food doesn't fall off when you take a piece of something. The total for 2 items with tax and tips came up to around 82$. It's definitely not cheap but the quality is pretty decent. As for the place itself, it's a relatively big space on the second floor. Raisu is one of my favourite restaurants in Vancouver. The sashimi and seafood bowl are great choices, and the sho ka do bento offers a variety of small bites that are different every day (but there are limited quantities each day so act fast!). Some of my favourites that you should definitely try if you don't know what to order: - MENTAIKO UDON: other places that serve mentaiko udon usually have it as a saucy udon, but here it's udon in a milk silky smooth soup. The soup is so good that I always drink it all or, if I also have a rice dish, I'll pour it over the rice to finish it off - KOBE WAGYU BEEF SHABU SHABU UDON: tender paper-thin slices of meat and a flavourful broth pair, what's not to love about this? - KOBE WAGYU CROQUETTE: never thought croquettes were my thing but these are just so juicy and tender. Rather filling though, so budget your appetite accordingly - KOBE WAGYU & FOIE GRAS ABURI NIGIRI SUSHI: two of my favourite things sitting atop a ball of rice that soaks up all that delicious juiciness - ALMOND TOFU: I'm not usually one for sweets but this light dessert infused with fruity flavours is a perfect way to finish off a meal. read more

Came on a Monday evening (7:30pm) with 2 long-time friends. Just a heads up, the place is easy to miss because the ground-floor signage is tiny -- but the space is quite large up the stairs. I'm glad we made a reservation earlier in the day because the place was packed for a weekday late-ish evening. Sadly didn't get to sit at one of the kotatsu tables outside. The menu gives the sense that the place is very authentic, as do the waitresses with all their thick Japanese accents (I had trouble understanding them). Definitely a higher-end restaurant, so expect to splurge for some fanciness. My friend and I shared a snow crab & uni (sea urchin) cream udon ($18, on the special menu) and a sizzling stone beef steak hitsumabushi ($22). Our orders arrived almost too fast, but no complaints since we were starving. The udon came in an impressively large clay bowl -- if only the food portion was larger in proportion. I LOVED the udon -- the few pieces of crab were delicious and so was the thick seafood broth. Can't say the same for the hitsumabushi though -- not worth the money in my opinion, and the broth in the pitcher was an acquired taste. Service was prompt and friendly, albeit sometimes hard to understand. Overall well worth the experience. Would love to try some of the limited-quantity stuff next time. read more

After visiting Kingyo last year, we were searching another unique Japanese restaurant in Vancouver, and one of items at Raisu's menu caught my attention: Wagyu Beef Hamburg Teishoku. Japanese Hamburg steak is very similar to Chinese Lion's head pork meatballs or Italian meatballs. Raisu's Hamburg steak is very moist, juicy, chewy texture glazed with their special sauce, some vegetable, sweet onion with Tonkatsu sauce and black pepper. The rich sauce (their special sauce), adds another of wonderful and unique flavor to already perfect beef Hamburg steak. Even a picky eater like me can't say NO to such delicious Hamburg steak. We also ordered Jumbo EBI Mayo which is very flavorful and tasty. The size of shrimp is between super colossal and extra colossal (yes, this is the size of EBI supposed to be ), and deep fried. Crispy and airy flakes gives a nice crunchy texture to inside juicy ender shrimp. Their chili mayo kick up flavors, both sweet and spicy. I have to say Raisu does better job than Kingyo on Jumbo EBI Mayo. Mixed Cutlet set is way to dry and Free Range Chicken Karaage is just ok. read more
