Raisu is kind of hidden along the busy shops and restaurants on W4th Avenue, so it may be easy to miss if you are not familiar with the area. This is an authentic Japanese eatery run by Japanese people that specializes in set meals and rice dishes, and is a sister restaurant with some other Japanese establishments in the city like Kingyo, Suika and Rajio. I ordered the deluxe seafood bowl ($38) because I've been wanting to try it for a long time, and it didn't disappoint. There was a variety of fresh quality seafood - farmed salmon, sockeye salmon, different kinds of tuna, scallop, uni, fish roe, real crab meat and a piece of spot prawn - mixed with seaweed and salad greens on top of a bed of vinegared sushi rice, and was served with a side of miso soup. Pros: quick service, spacious indoor and outdoor patio seating. Minor cons: sashimi pieces weren't all the same size, a bit on the pricier side (good for a treat but not a place that you'd probably return to regularly) read more

3rd trip here, can't believe I've forgotten to review it! This time I had the lobster udon (4/5! giant lobster tail!) as well as the deluxe seafood bowl (5/5, lots of seafood and they deepfry the head). In the past I've gotten some other items like the uni crab rice (5/5) and did the uni shooter (4/5) and the uni custard (3/5). Definitely recommend getting a reservation if you can and hopefully can get the bento sometime in the future! read more

I would say five stars due to the combination of food service and ambiance. The ambiance is perfect for a date night or large group gathering. The food is delicious, but their speciality is definitely seafood. read more

Pretty amazing! I can't wait to go back. Ordered 'the' box tonight for $29 and it was so well presented. Every bite was delightful. Complimentary miso soup and rice refill - bonus! The miso soup is light and tasty, unlike ones in most restaurants. We also had the daily grilled fish - today's mackerel and it was perfect. My little niece had tonkatsu and I tried some, so good! We had the Japanese cheesecake and Uji Matcha Cake to finish off our meals. Love the service too! read more

We went here during a weekend trip up to Vancouver and out of all the great food we ate this place was the stand out for everyone. All of the food we really well done, from the taste to the presentation each dish was unique and well executed. They have a special section of their menu dedicated to otoro and I highly recommend getting at least one thing off that section. Other stand outs were the curry udon that came in an extremely large bowl as well as the Yuzu cream cheese with garlic bread. read more

WE LOVE RAISU! Was craving for some Japanese food the other night, and decided on coming to Raisu. There was a risk that it would've been busy, and we were right when we arrived. It was a packed house. Lots of people. We decided to wait. The host said probably looking at 30 minutes, but we actually got a table in less than 10 min! So that was pretty cool that we got a table so quickly. There is a nice, warm ambiance at Raisu. They put a lot of thought and creativity in their design and layout, and it definitely shows. If you come here, you will appreciate the ambiance and vibe here. Lots of Japanese culture in and around the restaurant. The service here was excellent. Our waitress was very polite, gracious, and attentive to me, my wife and my son. My son even spilled his cup of water onto the floor, but our waitress was very nice and gracious about it. She cleaned the floor and told us not to worry. She made our evening! In some restaurants, there would have been a level of frustration with what our toddler son did. But our waitress's response made our evening even better. The food. Oh, the food was amazing! It is a little on the pricier side. We ordered the Grilled Fish Teishoku (single fish is $19/meal), Omakase Aburi Sushi 8 pieces ($21) and the Souffle Cheesecake ($8), and the kid's meal for our son. The Grilled Fish Teishoku was amazing. Tender, and favourable! The Aburi Sushi was also amazing. Filled with flavour, and the rice was packed nice and firm. It did not fall apart the moment I picked it up with my chopsticks, unlike other Japanese restaurants that don't do this as well. The location was nice - it was on the west end, on West 4th, so it is a nice, and quieter area. Free parking can be found in and around the neighbourhood. We were lucky to find one that was 2 min walking distance to the restaurant. As for the price. You get what you pay for - isn't that the saying? It's true here. A little pricy, but at least for us, it was well worth the cost for the meal. We would come back, but unsure if Raisu (as much as we love it here) could be a place where we come back regularly (it is expensive). For special occasions, and every once in a while? Yes, absolutely. Highly recommend! My breakdown: Food 4.75/5 Ambiance 4.5/5 Service 4.75/5 Location 3.75/5 Price 3.75/5 read more

Came here specifically for the deluxe seafood bowl and was not disappointed at all. Generous portions and great variety of sashimi presented! My brother got the tonkatsu dinner set and my mom got the grilled fish set - again both really generous portions and done nicely. My foie gras and truffle savoury egg custard (chawanmushi) was sinfully delightful - the rich toppings were not overpowering at all for the silky smooth egg custard. Man, I dream of eating this over and over again. The omakase aburi was a bit pale in comparison - it was good but didn't have that wow factor. Maybe just the choice of garnish and sauces weren't up to our liking. They are VERY busy during prime dining times - make reservations! Service was excellent and pricing is really fair for the quality of food. read more

I had to walk out after being seated. The environment was energetic, and it was a cool upstairs space, although the staircase was a bit steep and nerve-wracking to climb down. The servers were very energetic, but the one I dealt with seemed very confused and did not know the food or the menu very well. The biggest issue is I quickly discovered that the food was not very healthy and it was clearly more fusion cuisine than traditional Japanese. Upon asking a few questions, it was clear they were not serving the highest quality or a menu that was very healthy. Spider senses were tingling in a bad way, so I headed for the door and dined somewhere else. read more

First time trying out Raisu, my friend and I popped in on a Sunday night around 7 pm and there was surpsingly a wait on a Sunday! We weren't allowed to check in ahead of time with Yelp or anything, so we had to physically put our names down in the restaurant. There were 3 parties ahead of us but we were given menus to glance at while waiting so it wasn't too bad. Only thing I noticed was that they don't really have a waiting area so if you're waiting, you kind of just all stand on the stairs which can be dangerous if there are any emergencies or accidents. Parking is street parking, can be difficult to find and we ended up having to park across the street in the supermarket parking lot. We waited about 30 mins before we were seated at a bar area. We were immediately brought menus and served water, and service overall was pretty efficient. All servers were very friendly and efficient. We ordered 3 items: the deluxe seafood bowl ($36), chicken karage ($12), and the sizzling stone beef steak hitsumabushi ($23). We also ordered 2 drinks: raisu moscowmule and the Gorin Green - both alcoholic drinks. The Raisu moscowmule honestly tasted like soda, we couldn't taste the alcohol at all. In our case, I hate the taste of alcohol so I was glad I couldn't taste the alcohol. The Gorin Green on the other hand, definitely could taste the alcohol. I really enjoyed the little fruit bits in the drink though! Both drinks were very good, would definitely recommend. Food ~ - Deluxe seafood bowl: came with an assortment of different sashimi and miso soup. SO GOOD, all the fish were really fresh and piled on top of a huge barrel of rice. Worth $36, would definitely order again when I come back next time. - chicken karage: could do with or without to be honest. It was good but I was a little disappointed it didn't come with a sauce of some sort. Chicken was tender and juicy but a little salty. - sizzling stone beef steak: complemented the garlic rice under really well, but don't know if I'd order again. I would prefer to try another dish, but it was worth a try. beef was juicy and tender as well, and chewy. Overall, Raisu is a great spot for all sorts of occasions (date night, girls night out, etc) but there might be a wait! Definitely worth trying my first time in Vancouver, and will be back next time if I get the chance :) read more

The balcony tables have built-in blankets and heating units under the tables, so you tuck yourself in and your feet and legs stay warm and toasty while you're eating (apparently called kotatsu). That's a 5-star experience right there. Thankfully, the food is delicious too! I had a hot stone bowl, a beef hitsumabushi (my first stone bowl at a Japanese restaurant), and I really enjoyed the simple flavour of the ingredients. There was a nice smokiness to the beef and rice, along with subtle but tasty seafood notes from the tiny fish as well as the bonito flakes. Pouring the broth into the used stone bowl for a follow-up soup was a nice way to finish off the meal. The staff were friendly and professional, the menu was varied, the food tasted high-quality - what's not to love? It's a bit out of the way and hard to spot from the outside, but I'd love to come back and try more. read more

Great service! Went for a birthday and they surprise you with a dessert and a cute photo that they decorate for you to take home. This service is enough reason to come here alone. We got the salmon sashimi, real crab and uni cream udon and aburi sushi. Each was DELICIOUS. Food came decently quick. Got the lemon drink, had quite a bit of ice but was good nonetheless. Atmosphere is busy, but fun and vibrant. Would love to be seated on the patio next time. read more

A memorable 2019 experience for us. We really didn't know what to expect, but it was definitely one of our favorite spots of the year. I've bookmarked this place for some time, and although we frequent the Vancouver area, we never made it to Raisu...until now. Boy have we been missing out! On our recent visit, we came around 5ish and the place was pretty empty. Didn't come with reservations (and honestly didn't realize how lucky we were), but the hostess was kind enough to offer us a table under the condition that we be done in an hour. No problem, but we decided to sit at the communal bar. If you want to be in the middle of all the action and have a birds eye experience, this is the space you want to be in. After perusing the menu, we decided to go with the Sho Ka Do bento ($32), Wagyu Beef Croquette ($16), and Seafood Bara Chirashi Bowl ($26). We arrived early enough to snag one of the bentos, so if that's what you have your eyes on, strongly recommend arriving early or make an earlier reservation. The bento was amazing, and you really experience culinary excellence. Not just a smattering of fresh ingredients, but the execution and polish of it all was top notch. I particularly enjoyed the savory custard with ikura and uni. The ebi with mushroom varieties was light, crispy and warming. Every little bite was like a symphony of flavors paired beautifully with texture and visual accents. The chirashi bowl was delightful as well, with a thoughtful approach in positioning each piece of fish between pickled daikon and rice. There wasn't an overwhelming amount in each bite, and the flavor balanced each other. The croquette was tasty and nicely fried without being greasy. I appreciated the crispiness of the bite without being overwhelming. Good finish. To top it all off, we ended the night with their soufflé cheesecake. This was the weakest dish of the night, and would definitely pass on this. The texture of the cake was too dense and dry. Overall our experience was phenomenal. Had the dessert been better executed, this would easily have been a 5-star experience. However, we will definitely be back and look forward to seeing what new items they come up with. :) read more

Raisu seriously never disappoints, as with all of the restaurants under this same chain. The quality of food and customer service is on par with what you'd get in Japan. This review is an updated one, from my previous 4 star to a 5. My husband and I came here for our anniversary. We ordered the mix cutlet teishoku, uni cream udon, the spot prawn sashimi, and 2 desserts. i also ordered the plum wine sangria, which was very yummy and a nice change from the usual white/red sangria. The rice and the soup for the teishoku can be refilled as many times as you'd like. Both of the desserts were delicious and nicely presented. I don't have much to say because this restaurant is seriously as good as it gets. I had zero complaints. The servers were also attentive and friendly, even though it was really busy. On the same note, please ensure you make reservations to avoid disappointments. read more

I'm always super excited to eat here. The service is great, the environment is lively and the food is delicious. This time I ordered a few daily specials, including wagyu nabeyaki udon and miso black cod. We started off with the deluxe scallops and snow crab, which was absolutely delicious. It comes with 2 giant scallops, with snow crab inside and deep fried in batter. Sauces included a tartar sauce and a tangy bbq sauce - I found the tartar sauce was the best. It's a bit pricey for just 2 scallops, but it was very tasty. For the udon, it was slightly different from their usually wagyu udon. This special udon came with the soup already inside the bowl, which I was surprised, as the regular wagyu udon has the server pour the soup in front of you. I found this would've been better because the beef is not over cooked. Otherwise the udon was very tasty - and I love their unique broth. Last was the black cod. I love eating black cod at Japanese restaurants, but the way Raisu does it makes it even better. It's not too salty, not overly sauced. It was garnished with mushrooms which paired extremely well with the taste of the cod. Would order again! Can't wait to come back! read more

Authentic Japanese restaurant offering sophisticated and delicious menu items with stunning food presentations. Both my friend and I are serious uni lovers so we tried out a few of the uni dishes on the menu. I loved each and one of them because the uni in each dish is so fresh and creamy. Uni shooter is a must have. There is just the right amount of acidity in the dish that enhanced the sweetness of the uni. Excellent service and casual atmosphere. I'm a big fan of Raisu! I'm not a Japanese food snob, but there are a lot of "Japanese" restaurants out there that are unauthentic in a very insincere way. Raisu is not one of them. Raisu is located upstairs from the street level. We saw reviews saying they have private parking lot - they don't have private lot! I did call to confirm. We were there a Saturday PM around 4pm and was lucky to find street parking and pay with "pay by phone". There's a bar area surrounded by indoor seating, and a enclosed and heat lamp covered patio area with some tatami table seating for 4 or more and regular tables for 2. I so wish we had party of more than 2! There's a regular menu (like picture) that's interesting and you flip on the rice ball. There's also a one page (special?)menu. We ordered a beef don and a uni udon. Both are very yummy! The disappointments causing -1 star are 1) slow service, no water refill and really hard to grab server attention 2) uni udon does not have uni himself as a topping, server says it's in the uni soup. Yummy regardless but slight disappointed as I expect to see uni. read more

Raisu remains one of my favourite restaurants in Vancouver. The homely decor with the distinct flavours of Japanese home style cuisine accompanied by a slew of fresh ingredients always makes for a great experience. This time was no different, everything was great. I had one of the dishes on the special menu as I've been here multiple times. The Unagi Bowl I had was one of the best I've ever had. The amount of bones in the fish was minimal unlike a lot of unagis I've had which have had bones in every bite. This made for a pleasant and easy eating experience. For drinks, my group ordered a pitcher of Plum Wine Sangria. It was an incredibly refreshing drink and the plum wine was great with the variety of fruit it was soaking. read more

The otoro aburi sushi was fresh and the fish was to die for. The sizzling stone beef steak on top of rice was good, but not something I would get again. I think I found my favorite Japanese restaurant! Too bad it's in Canada! Reservations are a must. We booked over a week in advance and got one spot only 445pm weekday out of 4 days. We were seated in a tatami table where it sinks in, so we had to remove our shoes and sit down. It felt private even though it had no doors. We tried the Japanese A5 wagyu (melts in your mouth), Otoro don (super fatty), some Uni shots, sashimi, udon, etc, everything was delicious!! Even my kids loved the otoro or sushi. They have a kids meal, which comes with rice ball, tamago egg, karage chicken, soup, dessert and a little salad. Perfectly balanced meal for a child. Can't wait to try other items on the menu. Lobster udon was out of this world. I chose lobster over crab because the broth is already fishy and the lobster tail gives it more umph (rather than fishy crab, and I saw in the reviews they don't give much meat). Their lunch set was really yummy and great for its price point. The steak and meat/sea ball combo was unique in its flavours and texture on point. Pressed sushi was ok. It all kind of tasted like mayo, too much rice, and their fish was ok. But I don't think sushi is their thing here. Ambience great. read more

Pretty disappoint with the food and service overall. Flavours were quite bland and the hyped up sho ka do bento that they only sell 15 of daily was n utter let down. Great for Instagram but consists of overcooked salmon, bland tasteless meatballs, and flour/ batter heavy karaages... The milk silky mentaiko was also not very good. Overly saucy but lacked flavour and substance. It is served in a giant bowl but honestly a very small portion. Miso pork cheeks were tougher than my old leather chair. We order over 10 dishes but nothing worth mentioning and to run home about. BEST TEMAKI IVE EVER HAD . I absolutely love coming here for their RIY temaki hand rolls. And they have such an amazing variety of fresh seafood and astonishing plating. * 2X otoro temaki ($17/each) this was amazing! We wanted to also get the UNI temaki but they didn't have it that day! The otoro was oh so fatty and tender and so soft! There was also fish eggs on the temaki which added a nice flavour to it. The raw scallops was so delicious with the otoro I'm shook how well it tasted! The snow crab was a good combination to it as well! Rolling it was fun too make sure to roll it tight to trap all the good fish eggs! * Bluefin deluxe don ($46) ~ this was loaded with bluefin tuna, and fish eggs and spot prawn! It was messy to eat but delicious overall. The bluefin this time was a bit more fishy than usual but the wasabi and soy sauce covered it easily. And it also came with a side of miso soup which has shiitake mushrooms in it. Unique soup not as miso flavoured. * UNI cream udon ($24) ~ this was ok la. The UNI was incorporated in but there was no sign or flavour of UNI. And the snow crab was good. The udon was chewy and the cream soup was thick and rich. But I wish there was more UNI in it. * 8/10 ~ The UNI udon was not worth I recommend the spicy lobster instead it's way better. The bluefin don was ok, a bit fishy but not bad. The temaki hand roll was the thing that made me hooked and shocked. Sooo delicious highly recommend trying their hand rolls! * 5/10 ~ it's not cheap here that's for sure. The temaki is one hand roll and it's $17 but it's still so good I always get it each time! The portions aren't too big but there was 2 of us and we were full from this amount. Total bill before tip: $109.20. * swipe to see their otoro special menu they had that day. read more

We had my sisters b day and absolutely loved it!! Great experience over all and service was great. I tend to usually eat with my eyes and not my stomach so I'm infamous with over ordering. The server would send out half our order then check if we are still full to proceed with the other half! We received 95 percent of what we initially ordered and left two dishes out cause we were just so full. Our party consisted of 8 ppl and bill came to around $500 ish including tip! Here what was on our menu that night: That is missing from the photos Hot wagyu fried rice Truffle omelette with crab Sangria was good!! Ginger ale was in house made was delicious! Pretty decent overall and quite authentic. Not sure that it lived up to the hype and expectations though. I've always loved this spot but it really depends on what you come for. They're more geared towards Japanese foods as opposed to a sushi joint despite thinking about their Ocean's Offering and Deluxe Seafood Bowl. If you know you're coming though, be sure to call ahead for a reservation otherwise the walk-in wait might take a while and if you want to try their sho ka do bento box, which is served in limited quantities, you can reserve that too when you're making your booking. The food here is always good. I was there last night and most of their uni items from their specials menu were sold out but the creamy lobster uni cream udon and uni rice were some of our highlights. There was also blue fin aburi sushi but it was also sold out so we opted for the omakase aburi sushi. It was a little disappointing though as all 8 pieces ended up being tuna aburi... I'm more familiar with an assortment of aburis so that one threw me off a little. Overall, presentation at this place is always on point (You've seen the deluxe seafood owl) but it can definitely get a little pricey here. read more

Amazing food and good service. Feel like you are in Japan. Love the atmosphere here. Wil definitely come back!

I think this place could do much better. I had higher expectations upon seeing the menu options and seeing certain reviews. The service is fairly good, but it could be a bit more efficient. Also, I feel that it was a bit slow to seat despite having made reservations previously. Once seated, I was looking forward to trying the seafood tower, which included 9-10 different types of sashimi ranging from eel to prawn to salmon and tuna. However, I found the serving came a bit 'too quickly', meaning I don't think it was freshly prepared at the moment. My feeling was they probably had a few of these already prepped and in the fridge as it tends to be a popular menu choice. I could tell the sashimi was not at its freshest, meaning it was a bit limp. I was happy to try it, but have had fresher sashimi in Vancouver. We also ordered a beef bowl, which ended up being more about the rice and broth than the beef. There were very few pieces of beef. However, the smoky broth gave an interesting flavor. We didn't need more rice as our sashimi came on a bed of rice which was unannounced to us, so we didn't see it until the end. I like the added touch of winning a complimentary prize at the end of your dining experience here, but I think this restaurant could improve the value and options of its food. read more
