My go to home away from home. Jill is a fantastic waitress who always has a fantastic attitude. Breakfast is what I have most of the time, good stuff. Hollandaise is very good and has a nice lemon taste. I've also had lunch here good solid grasp of traditional diner classics like patty melts and chicken fried steak. Fair prices, generous portions. Never a rush to leave, this is the kind of place to catch up with friends and family. Free Wifi as well. Had MLK Day off and wanted to hit the Sun Break for breakfast, but alas they're closed Mondays! Stopped at the WaMu ATM for some cash and saw this place across the parking lot. "Let's give it a shot" I told my wife. Famous last words. It's really a "bar and grill" or, more appropriately a dive bar that happens to serve food for its patrons who can't limp to a restaurant 'cause they've been drinking since 9 AM (not that I have anything against drinking at 9 AM, but we were lookin' for a decent breakfast here.) So the ambiance sucks (think mid-eighties look with pre-smoking laws stained ceilings) and the small crowd is halfway to pickled on this fine winter day. We decided to eat there anyway and the food was edible until The Price Is Right started blaring from the TV behind the bar. This place is not what I expected a cafe to be. It's more like your neighborhood dumpy dive bar that also serves some food. We were in the area and wanted some breakfast foods for lunch. It was pretty good! The portion sizes were great (a lot better than places like Denny's). Not the best brunch I've had, but it wasn't terrible. I'd eat here again if I was in the area, but not sure if I'd come out of my way to eat here. Great old fashioned American diner style breakfast on a Sunday morning. Not many restaurants can beat that small town Main Street vibe with an order of (__input comfort food here__) and a coffee. The staff is small town friendly and courteous and the establishment was clean. I like the classics they offer, and I like that they also offer their own unique couple of dishes. We came in and placed orders but the Cafe was hosting a banquet and was behind on orders with only one cook. The cook was complaining loudly, cursing, not wearing gloves and not wearing a hair net. We decided we didn't want whatever she would cook up for us 15 minutes or so after placing our orders and walked out. We have given this restaurant a try 2xs. And everytime we visit the food sucks,staff is rude and dirty tables. The kitchen staff is always loud and laughing. I'm not sure who was on duty to get the negative reviews, but the waitresses I dealt with were friendly, helpful, and funny! I was early, and there was no push for me to order, when the others arrived, they were right there with a menu, but again, no push to order. Ordered the bacon cheeseburger with sweet spud fries, and it was delicious! Took half the order home with me for lunch the next day! The Rainbow Cafe has the best food in Auburn, hands down. I treat myself to a meal there once a week, usually on Saturday. I came in on Tuesday this week. I had the crab eggs Benedict with hash browns. The crab was fresh, the English muffin was petfect and the hollandaise sauce was close to being the best I have ever had. The hashbrowns were perfect, cooked with butter and perfectly crisp. The service is always prompt and the servers are always cheerful. The owner is usually in the restaurant and stops by each table to say hello. He cares about customer satisfaction. I highly recommend the Rainbow Cafe the next time you are hungry in Aburn. read more

Had breakfast there for the first time last weekend. I've been searching for a local place that has a great breakfast. Wish I had checked this place out earlier since I live only a few minutes away. The staff was friendly, though I can tell it's a very laid back establishment. I, for one, will be coming here as my main breakfast treat to myself when I wish to go out. The eggs benedict was terrific. The only downside was it was only one waitress and she was really working hard. Rude waitress. She had worked with one of my 3 guests and he was the one who recommended that we eat there. Salad fork instead of a dinner fork for a steak? Owner explained that the forks had the same number of prongs and when I suggested that I still wanted a proper fork for my dinner, we were asked to leave and not come back. "Family style" I understand, but proper utensils should still be available -- the other 3 at the table had proper place settings. Never got to taste the food, Went to the nearby Denny's instead. I went there this morning to have breakfast. I have eaten here many times over the years and have always found the food to be acceptable for breakfast. Not today. There was nothing redeeming about my meal at all. I ordered 2 scrambled eggs and I don't know what I had there on my plate. They didn't resemble any scrambled eggs I have ever seen in any restaurant. First they were cold and secondly they were flat strips of eggs, that's right, strips of eggs. I also ordered sausage with the eggs. The sausage looked like the brown and serve that you can buy at the grocery store in the frozen section. I took 2 bites and that is what they tasted like as well. When I order sausage at a restaurant I expect, them to be the links that are in casings and should be moist and tasty, not dried out and burnt. The toast was also burnt, and even with Jam on it, it still tasted burnt. The hash browns were so so, and after a couple of bites I saw there was a ton of grease on the plate under where they sat. The coffee is absolutely horrible. Even with cream I couldn't drink it. After a bite of everything, I decided I couldn't eat anything as this was inedible food. I was just going to pay the bill and leave all the food. A very nice lady sitting next to me called the owner Giovanni over to talk to me. She told me he needed to know about the quality of the food. The owner was very nice and offered to remake the food and didn't charge me for any of it. However he told me that it was on him as they are his cooks. He needs to find some better cooks. If they can't cook breakfast correctly, which is a large chunk of the business at the Rainbow, he is in big trouble.I was frankly stunned at how awful everything on my plate was. I have never written a review good or bad for any restaurant, but this was so bad that I just had to say something. It will be my last time ever going there, because if they can't get breakfast correct, why would I think anything else would be made very well. At $9.19 for the breakfast I don't thing that is cheap, Shari's is less and can cook the food correctly. read more

Ahhhhh, THAT explains it! What wonderful taste, and the dishes were cooked to perfection. WHY...only 2 stars? I see, finally above, that they profess to be serving ONLY breakfast and brunch. I'll bet my wallet, in the day this is a four or five star restaurant, because the TASTE was there, BUT our orders were brought to us luke- warm. I mean bordering on cool. I AGREE with another reviewer,,,the taste of the clam chowder was to die for, the food done as well as any I've had. We got there between 6:00 and 6;30 PM thinking the "open till 2:00 AM" meant the restaurant. The temperature that the food was served borders on a bacterial growth. I would NEVER recommend this place for dinner BUT, and if you read the cause, for breakfast and brunch, it rates much higher. read more

What a major disappointment - there were (at best) 6 small chunks of chicken fried steak, the rest was all potato chunks, and very little cheese. It was all covered/hidden by gravy. I showed the waitress this, but nothing done. $9 for potatoes and gravy is a ripoff! The cooks are not putting meat in this! A great way to lose customers!
