Nestled in the heart of downtown Auburn on Main street is a breakfast joint that leaves much to be desired. Competing with nearby Sunbreak Cafe is not an easy venture, but some of the overflow from the lengthy lines of the Sunbreak make their way to the Rainbow for breakfast. The first thing you notice upon walking in to the cafe is the apparent age of the building. With its aged...er...historic appearance, the mood is set for traditional greasy spoon dining. Despite its age, the food still could be good though right? At the Rainbow Cafe, the answer is "If you're lucky." The waitress was nice and brought coffee for my wife and I, but my Uncle declined - I suspected he knew something I didn't due to the proximity of the Rainbow cafe to his residence. I burned my tongue on the coffee, which was probably around 180 degrees. In retrospect, this was probably a good thing. I elected to go with a balanced 3 egg breakfast with hash browns, eggs, and toast. Nothing fancy. Surprisingly, my meal was fine, and I would actually give it 3 stars, although 1.5 stars for the coffee and 2 for the atmosphere. My wife's meal, if you can call it that, was completely unacceptable. I believe she attempted to order a malt-o-meal derivative, or some kind of oatmeal. What was delivered to the table appeared to consist of two layers, the larger layer below being comprised of a mushy white substance, with the upper layer consisting of a 1/4 inch thick layer of butter or oil. Luckily, we were able to split my breakfast because whatever that dish was cannot be considered food, and so I would have to give it the minimum 1 star. All things considered, if you are looking for a classic breakfast at a reasonable price, and there is a really long line at the Sunbreak Cafe, then the Rainbow may be a good option for you, but you might want to stop by Starbucks beforehand for your coffee. read more

What an extraordinary establishment! The staff is so kind and wonderful and the food is amazing! When you walk in, it's not like walking into a restaurant, it's like walking into home. You are greeted with a smile and see folks talking and engaging and they are complete strangers with each other. My favorite experience was over this last thanksgiving, I was sitting with my family and they had the Macy's parade on the tv. I started to cry as it was my first holiday since my mom had passed away. One of the waitresses didn't hesitate and came over and hugged me and let me cry for a moment. She didn't ask me what was wrong, she just hugged a good mom hug. You so t get that treatment anywhere else. The friendliest place on earth ! This cafe is hands down the most welcoming cafe ever. Not only our server, who I believe happened to be the owner, made our toddler daughter feel welcomed, she offered complimentary fresh fruit to her upon our arrival ! No other place we've eaten at has done that for us, I was pleasantly surprised. The other servers kept checking in on us and refilling our water and coffee and would always have a smile and friendly attitude towards us. I would not give any stars, but then could not tell you how bad this place was! Walked in, was not greeted by anyone, ordered drinks and had to ask for straws ( my daughters was a kid cup with a lid). Ordered roast beef sandwich= worst ever! the bread was white bread that had cheese melted on both sides so the oil from the cheese soaked the bread through, so I tried to eat just the roast beef and it tasted off, like leftovers from a while back. My husband ordered the reuben= it had 3 layers of bread also all greasy from cheese, he ate a few bites and could not eat any more. We had to ask for silverwear, we had water to drink and after I took a few sips noticed a waitress clearing a table of plates and cups. Good thing they were samples.... clam chowder tasted horrible, watered down potato soup with Luke warm clams added.. wasn't even thick. Looked forward to breakfast here. Very disappointed!!. Had biscuits and gravy and hash brown's. Side of eggs and sausage. Biscuits and gravy very dry, not enough gravy, and gravy lacked flavor and, most important, sausage. Eggs were undercooked at sunny up and sausage was well over cooked and dry. For a place touted as great, VERY disappointed. Price with coffee and tip 15$ Needs to improve. Service was weak too!! Nice unpretentious neighborhood joint. Homemade hollandaise on the crab benedicts was lovely, with just the right amount of lemon. Service was fast and friendly, wait times were very reasonable. Water was never refilled and coffee refills were scarce at best. We always ask each other if this would be a do over and NOPE! I've been visiting the Rainbow off and on for 35 or so years now, more off than on for the last 15 since I've been living up in Seattle. When I first visited the Rainbow it was run by the little old lady mafia conspiring to mother you to death in a distinctly western environmen - long horns and 19th century agricultural gear hanging from the wall, a daily small town newsletter on all the tables, and the most amazing omelettes and pies you ever did have. The years have passed and the little old ladies have moved on to that great cafe in the sky and a new owner has taken over (at least once). The bar is now *both* spacious and divey, there's a banquet room, and the decor has changed - the beautiful old knotty pine beadboard on the walls and backing the the hand-made boots is gone, the classic flooring and agricultural implements of yore vanished. So with decor gone, the food remains. The 85yo approves of her ham sandwich, and I approved of the ham and cheese omelette. While a tad youthful, the waitress was courteous and efficient - and now to dessert. Sadly, the recipe for Chocolate Lush Pie (a delicate crusted layered confection with a cream cheese base, a chocolate layer, capped with fresh whipped cream and a delicate sprinkle of shaved chocolate) seems lost. We have been wanting to try the Rainbow Cafe since we moved to Auburn a few months ago. We finally had the chance to do so tonight, and did not relish the experience. My favorite sandwich being the monte cristo, when I saw it on the menu I couldn't pass up the chance to try it. My girlfriend was torn between the meatloaf and the chicken fried steak; on our server's recommendation, she went with the meatloaf. The Good: Our main server was very friendly, and the decor was subdued but tasteful. My girlfriend's meal was excellent: the meatloaf and mashed potatoes were simple but satisfying (as befits a comfort food), the gravy was a wonderful complement, and even the peas-and-corn had a very tasty seasoning on them. My french fries were also very tasty, when I finally received them (see below). The Bad: All of our food came out together except for my french fries, which was delayed by 10 minutes or so. The server explained that the cook was fairly new, and that she brought us the rest of the food so it didn't get cold; this meant that I could either eat my sandwich warm with no fries, or cool with fries. I opted for the latter. The Ugly: There were two main issues with our meal. First my monte cristo was truly a horrible sandwich: the ham had a bitter taste to it, the turkey was a large breast chunk (normally excellent, somewhat hard to eat in a slippery sandwich) rather than sliced deli style, and worst of all they put a heaping helping of mayo on the ham side of the sandwich. Not only did this throw off the taste of the sandwich, but the mayo made the french toast slimy and mushy. The second issue was that I wasn't given a refill of my soda until our server came back to bring our check; although we were the only folks in the restaurant side of the business (there's also a lounge), my empty glass sat on the end of the table for 20 minutes as I tried to catch her eye. If our whole experience had been like my girlfriend's meal, you would now be reading a 4-star rating. However, mediocre service (-1 star) and hit-or-miss food quality (-1 star) drop that down to 2. Other reviewers seem to have had much better experiences, so I can't unequivocally urge folks to stay away. However, I can't see us going back unless we have a 2-for-1 coupon, so we only pay for the worthwhile portion of our meal. read more

Never having been here (and being new Auburn residents) was truly looking forward to finding a new breakfast joint close by. We realized it was a Saturday and on a holiday wknd no less but we arrived late morning, after what would be the typical rush hours. We parked in the back and walked through the bar to the restaurant. The sign said Please wait to be seated. It was at least 10 min before anyone acknowledged us. Yes it was packed but when multiple servers walk by with not a smile on their face and did not even say Boo ... bad feeling. Luckily a gentleman seated us soon after. I'm all for waiting especially if it's that great of an eatery. Now, that all being said, our meal did not disappoint. We had mimosas, bloody mary and a coffee. The cocktails were great and I never saw the bottom of my coffee cup. We ordered pancakes, bacon and the hillbilly skillet. WOW! We left with extremely full bellies! The food will bring us back. My experience has been that places like this have the potential to have great food and great prices and you you got to give them a shot. well they had their shot and it was a misfire. Awful coffee. My go to home away from home. Jill is a fantastic waitress who always has a fantastic attitude. Breakfast is what I have most of the time, good stuff. Hollandaise is very good and has a nice lemon taste. I've also had lunch here good solid grasp of traditional diner classics like patty melts and chicken fried steak. Fair prices, generous portions. Never a rush to leave, this is the kind of place to catch up with friends and family. Free Wifi as well.
