Another wonderful seafood dinner at the Ragin Reef last night! We were a party of seven (five adults and two children) celebrating my wife's birthday. When we arrived at 5 PM our table was ready and throughout the meal we received prompt, friendly, and courteous service from Melissa. Appetizers were one dozen raw oysters on the half shell, calamari, PEI (Prince Edward Island) steamed mussels with garlic bread, hush puppies, lobster queso with chips. All were wonderful but in the outstanding class was the lobster queso and the steamed mussels which are served in a wonderful cajun broth that includes bits of Chorizo sausage and Pico de Gallo. If you are a group of more than two considering ordering extra garlic bread (just a dollar) for dipping in the muscles broth... outstanding! Entrées were three crabcake dinner's with one or two crabcakes, fried shrimp basket, petite fillet mignon, and two children's chicken tender meal's. The crabcakes and the fried shrimp were just as good as I always remembered. For my wife and I the portions were quite large. We ended up boxing up and taking home The remaining PEI muscles and garlic bread, one crabcake, and four shrimp. And they heated up perfectly and what a great lunch they made today. Unfortunately, for us, the Ragin Reeve has now become discovered in Frederick and you can no longer walk in off the street at dinner time and be immediately seated. If you want to go for dinner I highly recommend that you make a dinner reservation. This restaurant is working on an expansion which will be completed sometime in the next couple of weeks. That should help provide more folks with a great seafood dining opportunity in Frederick. The last thing I will mention is that we drive all the way from Gettysburg Pennsylvania (about an hour) to dine at this restaurant... It is one of our favorites and definitely our favorite seafood restaurant! Try it you won't be disappointed. Wednesday, September 25 - Dined again for lunch at the Ragin' Reef. Raw oysters on the half shell were excellent as was the Fried shrimp basket. The crab dip, however, was only fair. My goodness what a wonderful treat to the end of the week! My husband and I have been wanting to try the food here for a while, and I recall us attempting to stop in pre-covid a few years ago. Unfortunately, we weren't aware that dinner reservations were required at the time. I will say, "it was definitely worth the wait!" I'd been craving seafood, but I wanted REALLY GREAT SEAFOOD, and luckily Ragin' Reef did not disappoint! We ordered takeout, and I decided to order everything that looked delicious on the menu and I'm so glad that I did! First and foremost, everything was fresh and piping hot! The hushpuppies and freshly fried fries were amazing, the crab cakes were what dreams are made of, LOL, and the coconut pecan crusted tilapia with the mango salsa were the "bees knees and the cat's meow!" My husband had the fried shrimp and scallop basket and our son had the chicken tenders. Needless to say they thought the food was delicious! I was truly satisfied with dinner, so much so, I danced in my seat! It's been such a long time since I've had really great seafood that didn't taste soggy, "oily" or overly seasoned. This food was pure perfection! Even for takeout is was beautifully presented in our takeout containers, so I can only imagine how it would've been "plated" in the restaurant. I just want to thank the staff and everyone that prepared our food! Although, we're slowly but surely emerging back into the post-covid world, having such an amazing dinner this evening made me super appreciative of the hands that prepared it, and it also made me realize all the things that I've missed over this past year! Best crab cakes ever if you like succulent lump crab without too much breading! Crispy on the outside, tender and well-seasoned on the inside, the right amount of creaminess without being heavy. Definitely get the two crab cake plate (the single one is not enough for a small Asian girl). The side of skinny fries was done perfectly too, and the slaw was sweet and fresh with just the right amount of mayo. Other highlights include $1 oysters during their happy hour so definitely come here M-F 3-7p. I'll definitely be back. Had dinner this evening with my daughter and son-in-law - first time for all of us. They live here - my wife and I are in town for the weekend - she had other plans so didn't join us. We didn't have a reservation - I'd highly recommend making one on at least weekend nights - but the hostess (Isbel - sorry about the spelling) and Jonathan, the owner/manager, went out of their way to fit us into an outside table with a minimal wait. Our server Silvia got right to us, helped us get our drink and dinner orders placed promptly, and visited our table several times throughout dinner to make sure everything was going well. SIL and I both had the crab cake meal and my daughter had the salmon. I'm uber critical of crab cakes, and these were near the top of my rating ladder, which means they were pretty darned good. Mostly big lumps of crabmeat and just enough filler to hold everything together. Fries and cole slaw were included. Daughter says the salmon might have been just a tad underdone but was tasty enough that she went with it "as is." Can't speak to the spinach she asked for as a side - personally can't stand the stuff - but she seemed pleased with it. Okay, so I have to admit that I actually misread the name of this place on Yelp and thought it was called Ragin' Beef. When I was reading the menu, I thought it was strange that there were so many seafood dishes. All that aside, I really liked this restaurant. I had the fish tacos with thin cut fries and absolutely loved them and at $10.99, it was a great price as well. The thing I liked about them, besides the taste, of course, was that they didn't skimp on the fish. They were actually packed, but overly packed, so at least to me, it was a pretty good value. Add in the lettuce, pico de gallo, and the chipotle lime mayo and that in itself would bring me back again and again. The fires were pretty awesome too and salted exactly the way I liked them. Service was good as well, but a little spotty at times, but not enough for it to be bad. The waitress was friendly, but seemed a little confused. The only issue I had was at the end. There credit card authorization system went down and they literally tried to run my card like 7 or 8 times before they came and told me there was a problem. I ultimately borrowed the money from my coworker when they couldn't get their system to work. I just wish they had told me about the problem sooner. The wait cost me 30 extra minutes. Since I was there at lunch, that was a bit problematic. I'll definitely be back. read more

Dining with Ragin' Reef was an overall incredible experience! We found RR on Yelp, and it had positive reviews so we wanted to check it out-- mainly because we saw the "lobster and spinach queso." We made same day reservations and got in easily at the time we were looking for. We arrived, got seated immediately, and the waitress Bre was prompt in getting our drinks and food orders. We were disappointed that they no longer had the lobster queso that we had seen on Yelp posted 3 days ago, but we ended up ordering two other appetizers, the Hush Puppies and the Calamari. The calamari was amazing, lightly breaded and was not rubbery. The hush puppies were on par with most hush puppies, but the honey butter was a fantastic addition. We were very pleased with the appetizers and would strongly recommend to everyone! For main courses, we ordered the stuffed shrimp and the candied bacon scallops. The stuffed shrimp were HUGE and had so much seafood in them. They were delicious. Instead of the red beans and rice, I opted for the Chef's Vegetable which was spinach with garlic and onions. It was delicious and a nice light alternative side! So glad they allowed substitutions! The candied bacon scallops were DELICIOUS! Unlike anything I have ever tried before. They did have a lot of spice to them-- so if you don't like spicy, I'd shy away from them. Ragin' Reef has onsite parking which made it easy! The place was clean, quiet and good for conversations, and the workers were all so welcoming and courteous! After two appetizers and our two meals, plus 20% tip, we spent $75. It was a great choice! The Ragin Reef is not fancy schmancy, or large, but it's neat and clean with booth and table seating, as well as a bar. I was starving to the point where it was difficult for me to make a decision on what to eat... Should I have fish or crab? Our server was very friendly, helpful, and patient and I was very pleased with what WE decided to order. I had the crab cake platter which came with fries and cole slaw. The crab cake was absolutely delicious...full of lump crab and flavor. The cole slaw tasted freshly made; unlike that standard white and orange store-bought slaw that many restaurants serve.... Even the fries were good. I know you'll think I probably thought it was good because I was starving, but nope!... I'm picky, I have a discriminating palate, I'm a Maryland girl, and I know good seafood when I taste it. I hope this restaurant maintains the quality and service I received during my visit because I'd highly recommend it to anyone and I'd definitely return. read more

The service has always been ok, polite and quick but without the hovering to refill your water glass the second you take a sip. It melts in your mouth and the sweetness of the sauce comes out well. Fries are lightly salted to perfection, not too much. Cute little place on the outskirts of downtown Frederick. We love seafood (especially crabcakes) and so this was a must-try for us. We ordered the blackened scallops and the lobster & spinach dip as appetizers. The dip was a hit with everyone, and the scallops were delicious although oddly you get three scallops, which is hard to split. I would recommend they up the cost and add an additional scallop to the dish. We got three orders of crab cakes - they were the best crabcakes I've ever had. Huge lumps of crabmeat, nicely seasoned, very little filler, and the cakes themselves were huge. The french fries were also really good!! My parents got the wicked chicken and shrimp pasta and the chicken pecan salad - both said they really liked their dishes (my Dad said the pasta had just the right amount of kick without being spicy) although the salad came with a really small amount of dressing. I'm giving four stars for two reasons - one, the restaurant was at meat locker temperatures which had all of us shivering throughout the meal. We asked to have the air adjusted and it seemed to be a little less frigid but still chilly. Second, the service was distracted. We got our meals and it took a while for us to be checked on, and the check was a drive-by "everything ok?" with no pause. I had wanted to ask for more ketchup for myself and more dressing for my Mom but wasn't able to get it out before the waitress left.
