It was a long time since I was last here. For that period of time, I held onto a grudge for this place (based off my past experiences, it was a rightful grudge). I vowed to never return. It's been well over a decade since I was here last. More recently, I decided to try this diner again - and much to my surprise, things have been much, much better. Unsure if ownership/management changed or not, but I don't see the same people I used to see long ago - which is a good thing judging from the past and how they treated some. Full disclosure - I've been ordering take out and haven't dined in again as of yet, so this is not for that experience as of now. I have been ordering take out and everything has been as good as you can expect. The orders have been correct and the food has been good. They're fairly generous with the condiments and such. There is never much of a wait. Whether calling in or when I'm inside to pickup, everyone has been friendly, welcoming, and courteous - which always goes a long way. The outside neon sign is iconic. The parking lot can be busy depending on the time of day and there is plenty of parking. Turning left out of the parking lot can be a hassle at times, so use caution. There is metered street parking as well, though after 8pm and on Sundays you don't have to pay. I'm glad I gave this diner another chance after so long. It's become reliable for me. Went to the Raceway Diner at 5:30 pm. As soon as we were seated with menus the bus boy came and filled water glasses. Our waitress was Mimi who greeted us with a smile as she asked for a drink order. My nephew asked for Sprite and I had unsweetened Ica Tea.We started off with an order of Calamari as an appetizer. I was in the mood for a complete dinner so I ordered salad with blue cheese dressing, Chicken Francaise with corn and mashed potatoes. My nephew ordered Split pea soup, Veal Marsala with corn and mashed also. The place was clean and quiet . The service was great . The food was very tasty and good portions. You walk in and there is a very chill vibe. The servers are very attentive and come around to check on you regularly. The food was ok. My potatoes were not seasoned but it's like every diner you go to. I was a bit annoyed that I asked for sausage and got bacon instead but it was ok. I got the Raceway Royal breakfast. From the sausages to the bacon, and the over easy eggs, I'd say were satisfying, for me. The pancakes were okay. However, my Bf got the Montecristo French toast and unfortunately that toast didn't taste like "French Toast " it was like dry, buttered bread, and turkey meat tasted like poultry, it just wasn't appetizing at all. Food is pretty standard for diner fare. I had a bison burger deluxe (pretty good); my friend Belgian waffles and western omelette. He was happy with his meal, as well. This place has been here forever and can use a bit sprucing up as the decor is a bit outdated, but well kept and the bathrooms are clean. The best part of our visit was our waitress, Evelyn. Such a nice, pleasant, polite young lady. I would go back just to say hello to her! The food left a bit to be desired, but I'm a serious food snob. That said, I believe the place can do much better business if they offered some outside-the-box dishes that people would rave about as it's a perfect location with plenty of potential clientele, given it is directly across the street from the old racetrack converted into a casino (Empire City). My wife and I have been regular customers for years and we have noticed changes in the food. We ordered a corned beef Reuben to share. The sandwich came out and it was very dry. The corned beef was paper thin like it was just sliced from a deli corned beef...not fresh at all. We told the waitress and the manager came over and offered us another sandwich of the same kind. We refused since the ingredients would be the same. The manager charged us FULL price. I told the manager on the way out that he better improve on the quality of his food. After the typical bagel breakfast on day one we wanted a sit down breakfast. We decided to try Raceway because they seemed to have a good variety of options. Compared to most restaurants for a party of 5/8 (3 car seats) they were able to sit immediately. The staff was very helpful and the customer service was great as we got seated. Once seated we did wait a bit before someone came to take our orders. Our waiter wasn't as personable as the other staff but he did try to make sure we got what we needed. The items ordered were Homemade Challah Bread French Toast, Chocolate Chip Pancakes, Turkey Bacon, Pork Sausage, Corned Beef Hash, and Grits. The French Toast was doughy in the center so I wasn't a fan of it. The Hash could've been cooked harder throughout. The pancakes were okay nothing special other than seeing the chocolate chips they tasted like plain pancakes. The pork sausage was a NO for us and so we switched it for more turkey bacon. Every time I see "Irish Breakfast" on a Diner menu, I roll my eyes and think "what do they know about that?" Today I accepted the challenge, and I ordered my heritage's one and only signature dish; grilled tomatoes, blood puddings etc. In America, this is one the best incarnations I've ever seen. I can't say much about this place because all I've had every time I come is "breakfast options" are they are always really really good. Service is always on point, the management is very attentive, friendly, polite and the waiters and waitresses are too!!! Portions are huge, I never finish my plates without my boyfriend's. I have to emphasize that their coffee is one of the best diner's coffees you'll find. I have been to other diners and their coffee tastes like dark sock's water but theirs tastes like homemade, delicious, fresh coffee and that's one of the things that matter the most to me when coming to a diner, GOOD COFFEE!!!!!!!!! Staff was fast and friendly, food was okay at best. There were five of us with a verity of foods the chamber and fries were okay.

This diner was advertised as the #1 diner over the last 12 years. This according to the banner out side the front door. However, it never stated who voted or when. But anyway, the food was just ok. It is old and kept ok. The tables have old jukeboxes like in the 60 's and 70's. Nice touch. Not sure I will come back. It's been several years since I've been there. I'm not in the neighborhood anymore. I read some of the recent reviews and was a little nervous about stopping in. It's still a great place to eat with family and friends. Some of the waitstaff have been there for decades and it was nice to see them, again. It brought on feelings of nostalgia of many good times there. The food and service is still great; no complaints. Some of us ordered burgers; all at different degrees of doneness, and each was grilled to exactly the way they wanted. Doesn't get much better than a classic diner with a great menu! Came on a Friday with a large group and were seated and our orders taken quickly. It was a perfect day for chili and I couldn't help myself to some egg salad, a particular favorite of mine. My dining companions got the pork souvlaki, bacon burger, cheesesteak and a patty melt. The chili wasn't overly spicy but it was full of meat and flavor. The red onion on top really was a clinching factor. The egg salad sandwich was fantastic. It was just the correct amount and flavor. My friend who had the souvlaki was in love - just love the flavor and how well the sandwich was put together. My friend who got the bacon burger is gluten free and the server and cooks were very careful and get her safe. The cheesesteak was a major hit and the patty melt my friend had was stellar. This was the first time eating at this establishment and I really will NOT be eating here again. Coffee was served cold [most especially the expresso which I couldn't believe] I ordered omelet with sausages. This dish looked precooked then served. The toast looked crunchy but when I bit into the toast and it was soggy soft. We called the waiter to ask for the manager. Manager came and we expressed that the food was cold and the toast was soggy. My sisters dish has uncooked canadian bacon. After explaining, manager said all his customers are happy and that he didn't understand what our problem was. He proceeded to say this is how we serve our food. Seriously, I was so confused, for the food and the manager who didn't care not one bit for what was wrong with our order. I definitely WILL NEVER eat out at this trash establishment. I ordered a bacon egg and cheese sandwich on a roll and specified ketchup, hot sauce and black pepper on the sandwich. Not on the side, like the girl on phone wanted to it, I repeated it 3x's to her. No condiments on the sandwich after being specific on how I wanted it. Returned it and the owner searched the sandwich to show me a spec of black and say that's the pepper, it was a actually a spec of burnt bacon, and then says the ketchup's in the bag. They forgot the hot sauce that's all the owner said. Had to fight for a refund,, I said the Sandwich is made wrong. For a $10 breakfast sandwich it should be made the way it was ordered. We were so disappointed, when we're in New York this has been our go to place to eat. My spouse had fish. The only good thing to eat. Her mashed potatoes were cold and unseasoned, the carrots wee cold and unseasoned. Her soup that came as an appetizer had good flavor but about 2 teaspoons of rice and 2 little cubes of chicken.
