Extremely Disappointing Customer Service and Unprofessional Behavior by the Owner
During breakfast, I found what appeared to be a piece of eggshell in my breakfast burrito. Unfortunately, my pregnant companion had already swallowed a small piece before we realized what had happened. She immediately spit out the remaining food onto the plate, where we noticed the suspected eggshell. I showed the piece to the waiter and took a photograph to document what we had found.
I then brought the issue directly to Sal, the owner, expecting a professional and respectful response. Instead, I was shocked by his dismissive attitude and facial expressions, which made me feel as though he was mocking me or treating me like I was unintelligent. He insisted that he had been in the food industry for a long time and claimed that the piece was not eggshell. However, his experience in the industry does not justify dismissing a customer's legitimate food safety concern without properly listening or investigating the situation.
What made this experience particularly disappointing was that the owner himself--not a manager--handled the situation in such an unprofessional manner. The waiter had seen the same piece and was shown the same photograph I presented to Sal. Rather than taking the concern seriously, he appeared more interested in dismissing me than understanding what had happened.
I want to make one thing absolutely clear: I was not looking for a discount or a free meal. In fact, I gave the waiter the full amount of the discount applied to the bill to demonstrate that my complaint was never about money. My concern was the food safety issue, particularly because my companion is pregnant, and the complete lack of respect shown when I brought it to the owner's attention.
At the end of the interaction, Sal stated that he wanted everyone to be happy so that we would return. However, customer satisfaction is not achieved by simply saying the right words. It comes from listening to customers, taking their concerns seriously, and responding with courtesy and professionalism.
My advice to Sal is simple: Do not be dismissive of your customers. Listen to them, respect their concerns, and be willing to acknowledge that you may not always be right. When a customer presents a piece of foreign material found in their food, the appropriate response is to investigate the matter respectfully, not make faces or act as though the customer is foolish for speaking up.
Unfortunately, this experience has left a very negative impression of the establishment. For something as basic as breakfast, I would expect a much higher standard of customer service.
The food issue was concerning, but the owner's attitude made the experience considerably worse. No customer should have to feel disrespected for bringing a legitimate concern to the attention of management, especially when food safety is involved. read more
