Food A+ Service A+ Ambiance A Ok, first time visit on a late Saturday morning. Parking was plenty with a handicap entrance ramp in the back. First impression: typical diner look, a little rundown, but honestly makes you feel very comfortable. Very home-like feeling. Then came the service, then came the food. Not much to say about both other than outstanding. We had the waffles, cheese and mushroom omelette with hashbrowns and plenty of toast and bottomless coffee. Portions were huge, you won't go home hungry. Our coffee cup was never empty and we were checked on routinely to make sure everything's OK. Floor manager and the service folks were exemplary and very polite and friendly. Four stars out of a possible five but not because of the food or service When we go back for another visit, and we certainly will, if we have the same experience, I'll upgrade this to a solid five. We came in on a Friday morning as a group of 5. It was around 10:30 and the place was almost full. We could see how popular this place is. It continued to fill during our stay. The wait staff have been working here for years. We were promptly seated, given our menus, and water and beverages served right away. The menu is fulsome but not overly extensive - to my daughter's chagrin, no eggs Benedict on offer. It's your typical diner fare with eggs/omelettes, pancakes, waffles, French toast, biscuits with sausage gravy, and sandwiches. There is a separate lunch menu that begins at 11:00a.m. which we did not look at. Breakfast continues to be served all day. I went with a French toast slam, with sunny side eggs, order of wheat toast, and link sausages. The choices of bread included rye and possibly sour dough. Some of the breads are upgrades with an additional small charge. The French toast comes with a side of cream cheese. It was nicely cooked and distinctly cinnamony. My eggs were just barely fully cooked and not slimy. The sausage was typical. My daughter had a Philly cheesesteak which included green pepper and was really nice and hot, although the steak didn't taste as robust as she'd hoped. My husband went with a typical breakfast plate. He enjoyed most of it, but left most of the home fries. The decor is country style as opposed to 50's style chrome and leather. You can choose from booths or tables. There are plenty of amusing signs to read, like, if you don't like the coffee, leave (not verbatim, I can't remember the correct wording). There's only one bathroom for one person at a time for each gender, so the wait can be awhile. It is very roomy and clean. The prices are super reasonable and the staff are fantastic. For 5 full breakfasts and refillable coffees all around, it came out to just over $62. I can see why this place is so popular. I'm betting we'll be returning next time we come down for another visit. read more

A Hidden Gem with Heart and Flavor The R Diner in Central Square is hands-down one of our favorite spots. The food is consistently delicious--no matter what we order, it always comes out hot, fresh, and made with care. It's clear they take pride in what they serve. What really sets this place apart, though, is the staff. They always go above and beyond to make sure our family feels welcome. They remember our usual orders, and they truly cater to our kids with copious amounts of oyster crackers, peanut butter, and jelly, (which goes a long way when hungry kids are waiting!) every single time we're in. Robin and Sheri are the heart and soul of the diner. We always leave full, happy, and having shared a few laughs with one (or both!) of them. The food was very good along with the service. We tried the sausage gravy, mushroom, omelette, and cheese omelette. The eggs looked amazing. No burn marks and the cheese was fully cooked within the egg. The sausage gravy was also very good. The toast wastoasted properly, home fries were also cooked well and the coffee tasted awesome along with great service and a nice atmosphere. We come here every October when we come for super dirt week in Oswego. The food is always great, their pancakes are HUGE. W had omelets today, they were fantastic. The girls and guys are so friendly and eager to please. Sherry and Robin , Alyssa and Evan, and all the rest are like being around family. I love looking at all there signs inside very humorous! Great diner! There may be other diners in the area, but this one has become my go-to location for breakfast meet-ups on the way to work. Okay - it's a diner, and the menu reflects that, but...these folks obviously know what a diner should be all about. The service is fast and always friendly, the coffee keeps flowing as long as you want it to, and the food is excellent and plentiful. The sausage is especially good - I don't know if they make it on premise, but it tastes that way - much fresher and tastier than anything I've had at other local eateries. Omelets are fluffy and full of fresh ingredients, and they're more than happy to roll any of those into a wrap if you prefer picking your food up. There's no rush when you're done eating...they'll get you fed and out the door quickly if that's what you want, but if you want to just sit and have a conversation after eating, they'll keep the coffee flowing. read more

The parking lot is always full and when you walk in the decor has you feeling like you just walked into your sisters house during a family get together. The coffee is great and the staff is usually on point with keeping your mug full. Eight years of going here and the food is always delicious! Went there for dinner one Friday night. Friday is the only night they are open late. I like to sample the fried fish from restaurants in the area so that's what I ordered. I wasn't disappointed. Delicious crunch on the batter but soft and tender on the inside. Large portions at a lower than normal price. Wife had a hot turkey sandwich and mashed potatoes that she enjoyed. My son had pancakes and bacon. The waitress gave us a heads up in the size of the pancakes. He ordered two and only got through one. They're huge! One tip, if you go for fish, go early. Being open for dinner only one night means limited quantities. Update: went there again. This place is really good and is now on the regular rotation! read more

Great little diner out in central square. They really do stick to the classics for their main menu and they do it well. A pleasant surprise is that they offer a selection of seafood on Fridays and it's really, pretty good. I mean we're not in Maryland or anything, but they usually sell out of fish on Fridays because people go there just for that which I think speaks for itself. The only reason I give 4 stars instead of 5 is sometimes they get a little ambitious with their weekly specials and when it comes out it leaves you wanting. Hey, at least they're trying out new items, so props for that. But as I said, everything I've had from their main menu has been wonderful. read more

If you're looking for delicious, high-quality, affordable, and traditional diner food, R Diner is for you! Prices are very reasonable and the portions are impressive, but not over the top. The staff is very friendly and the service is always fast. R Diner is always immaculately clean, too. One of my favorites is the fish fry on Fridays--huge haddock, very lightly breaded, with two huge sides. They make their macaroni salad and cole slaw exactly like my mother did. They don't come out of a tub from a food distributor; they're made fresh on site every day. There are lots of breakfast offerings and I've loved everything I've tried so far. My favorite is the sausage gravy and biscuits, which are exactly like what I used to have at Jim's in San Antonio, TX, years ago. It's surprisingly light, not a bit greasy or salty, and while they have a half order available, I can easily scarf down the standard size and not feel overfilled. The biscuits are light and fluffy, too. The waitresses are always fun to joke around with, too. You may have to wait a few minutes for a table at the height of breakfast or on Fridays for dinner, but it's rarely longer than that. R Diner is now my favorite diner in Central New York. read more
