We swung by on a Sunday afternoon and got the Swan Cream Puff ($3.50) and Dulce de Leche 3 Cream Cup ($5). The Swan was beautiful, the Cream Cup creamy, rich, not too heavy, and absolutely delectable. Very reasonably priced for the quality. Queen's Bakery is located in the heart of Chinatown, there is street parking plus a few structures, Queen's Bakery was established way back in 1938 the second generation family owned. It's not that big inside, no table or chairs inside or out, just look order pay and go. There is a variety of Items liks croissants, breads, buns, tarts, cakes, cream puffs, cookies, coffee, sodas, teas, all of the Items pre-package and behind a glass display case. I only order the almond cookies, they were light airy and flaky and NOT sweet at all, not even a hint of sweetness. Every decade I have to pop in to toss my 5 stars into the Yelp universe. Almond cookies (22 oz) are now $9.50 but you cannot beat the quality and ultra fluffy crunchiness of Queen's. They're still being made with lard and the same quality ingredients I've known my whole life. It's always sort of busy, just be aware of the line and have your pick up slip ready if you pre-ordered a cake. Everyone was very polite and it moves fast. Staff was prompt helpful when I asked if they made Neapolitan cakes; bummer...they were so good. Pineapple buns & almond cookies are my go to items. I grabbed a few $5.50 cake slices too. Stumbled upon this bakery and got one egg custard bun and a pork floss bun. The pork floss bun tasted stale and the milk bread portion of the bun tasted wildly different from the egg custard bun, which was very good. The milk bread was soft and pillowy and the filling was generously pipped in and it's not too sweet. It was pretty cheap for $3 a bun that was sizable. The good: We got 3 pineapple buns, a slice of Black Forest cake and a swan cream Choux puff pastry. Whole cakes were around $30. The pineapple pastry was light and nice with a slightly crunchy sugary exterior. They had many cake and pastry options to choose from. The swan pastry was super cute and airy. The service was quick and efficient. The boxes that the cake was held in was cute and presentable if you buy gifts here. The bad: The Black Forest cake just had one cherry on it. It would've been nice if it had a layer of cherry jam or more cherries. The rice puffs have been a long time favorite in my family! They sell a couple squares or a box full of them so they make a nice treat to gift. Their rice puffs are so soft and not too sweet. I tried their mooncakes as well and I love how they put each individual one in these pretty orange boxes. They tasted so good too! I tried the white lotus paste without the egg yolk and the red bean with pine cuts. The crust had a nice chew to it and the fillings in them were not too sweet. God Save the Queen! Every time I come to Chinatown (which is about once a year), I try to make a stop at Queen's Bakery. Queen's Bakery brings me back to the old days of LA, when we had to drive to Chinatown or Alhambra to buy Asian groceries, when you could find Queen's Almond Cookies and Rice Puffs in every grocery store. As a kid I didn't find the almond cookies or rice puffs mind blowing, but I ate them because they were there. Fast forward a few decades and now I can no longer find Queen's Almond Cookies and Rice Puffs at any Asian grocer. Maybe the wider distribution has stopped, but Queen's is still holding strong. They make their money with their fruit cocktail sheet cakes. Spongy cakes with light whipped cream and fruit in the middle. Sweet but not too sweet, decadent but not filling. Just right for topping off a good Cantonese meal. These days, the almond cookies and rice puffs are a bargain. At $8.50, you can get box of each. The almond cookies are flaky, buttery, barely sweet with a slice of almond in the middle. If there's a crayon color called golden gold, these cookies would be it. My memory wants to tell me that that almond slice used to be a full half of an almond, but I understand baking budgets and the slice serves the purpose just fine. My mom was astonished that they crammed in 40 cookies for that price. The sachima/rice puffs I find myself craving. That's because the mass produced ones in the markets from other brands don't come close to having the tenderness and rich flavor that Queen's rice puff has. It's moist and dense but comes apart easily with a little bend. They mix in almond bits, sesame seeds and coconut flake sprinkles, the coconut really takes it to the next level. Their rice puff is a simple treat, but one that no other bakery in SoCal has been able to match or top. If you go back 40 or 50 years, these desserts taste now just like they did then. You can still order that fruit cocktail or strawberry cake for your banquet and feed all 10 people or 1000 people. That almond cookie and fortune cookie that Chinese restaurants used to give you along with your check, this is that cookie. And the sachima... San Francisco has its dan tats and Golden Gate Bakery and LA has Queen's Bakery's sachima... They are their own institutions and we are lucky to have them. read more
