Q Bakery is my go-to spot whenever I'm craving a good Vietnamese sandwich. It gets really busy, so I usually call in my order ahead of time. I've been coming here for years and it's still a regular stop for me. My go-to orders are the #20 (shredded chicken) and #21 (BBQ pork): both always hit. I'll usually grab a drink to go with it, and sometimes I can't resist picking up a pastry or two. My husband is a big fan of their beef stew as well. Wait I thought I did a review on this place already after having it a million times in my life! Oh well, better now than never. This place is one of my first favorites for banh mi sandwiches after the quality of those in Seattle's Little Saigon area have rapidly declined. It's also a place I've been going to since I was little, though I don't remember most of the interior changes that have occurred here if any. This place shares parking in a plaza that is absurdly strict about perfect, not-over-the-lines parking, so be warned. This place serves banh mi, drinks, pastries and a lot of packaged Vietnamese street food near the front. But forget about all that, because this is also the place where most people carry bags and bags of their baguettes, and JUST baguettes. Heck, I used to get them back then too when I was making my own banh mi sandwiches or just wanted some freshly baked bread. For a majority of my visits and this one, I got their grilled pork banh mi, which uses those same baguettes. I will say that their quality of banh mi has declined over the years, but not as hard as other places I used to have banh mi at in Chinatown. For the one I got for this review, it came with everything and was done very well. Pork was still grilled though not as much, and there was an ample amount of veggies and jalapeno peppers that I look for and thoroughly enjoy in my sandwich. It's not runny or drippy with sauce, and the baguette is the right kind of crispy each time. This is also the place that has the most consistent quality of banh mi that I've had so far over the years, so that's something I love about this place. It may not be as awesome as some other places that go above and beyond (like Saigon Drip Cafe or even Banh Mi Deluxe very close by), but I like to think of this place as a middle ground for what makes a great banh mi. Besides their banh mi, I sometimes also get their steamed buns, which have a ton of pork, a small slice of Chinese sausage and a small hard-boiled egg too. First off i'd love to rate this place at least a 3.5 out of 5. Anyways, I came to grab a Bahn Mi at this place because I'm still on the search for a go to Bahn Mi place in the greater Seattle area. One that's cost effective while also providing that flavor that I'm familiar with. Cost of a Bahn Mi is decently priced around 8-9 dollars or so. I got the grilled pork Bahn mi Texture of the baguette has that crispy with a flaky crust texture. This one doesn't cut the roof of your mouth like typical baguettes do and it has some softness to its flesh. Accoutrements are layered and have that classic flavor profile I like. Only thing that fell a little short was the amount of grilled pork. The unique thing I noticed as well was their grilled pork was sliced thinly. In comparison to the BBQ pork that my friend got. They had a larger portion of BBQ pork on their Bahn mi. This place also has some grab and go Asian baked goods. One that I tried was a fried bread with sesame seeds. It reminded me of the sesame balls at dim sum places without the red bean paste. Also was way larger and had tons of surface area in comparison to a sesame ball. All in all. I have heard of this place many times from friends before, and finally got the chance to try it. Walking in, the place was super bustling and there was lots of people there! We were recommended by family to try Q Bakery since we were craving for banh mi! It definitely did not disappoint. The banh mi ga (chicken) and dac biet (original) were really tasty. The original was $6.25 and the chicken was $5.50, which is a great price, seeing that a lot of banh mi shops in Portland sell them for around $7-9 now. We tried the banh mi, banh bao, pate chaud, nem nuong (meatball) and bought some baguettes. Our favorites were the banh mi for sure and the banh bao was really good too! I have patronized this business for many years and have bought hundreds of banh mi's! I have recommended this place over and over till today. So I went there bought several banh mi's and found they use a lower quality bread for their sandwiches now! They were comparable to a hoagie roll you got at QFC! It did not have distinct crust it usually did. We bought the bag of bread to and saw it is different. It has distinct 3 stripes like a torta bread. Amazing authentic Viet bakery. This has been recommended to me by several friends, and it was so worth the stop. Giant bags of baguettes in bulk order greet you in the back, a sign of its legit-ness. The highlight I came here for was the pate chaud. Similar meat shortcrust pies exist throughout Seattle and in various ethnic contexts, and by far this has been my favorite rendition. The pastry is impossibly flaky and buttery, with an undertone of savory lard and lots of love. The meat inside is juicy and flavorful. It's perfectly toasted and the texture is spectacular. I've also had the pound cake (a little too sweet and not very buttery) and shrimp balls on skewers , and seafood pate slices (a bit too salty and unbalanced in flavor) from the hot bar. The MKE Yelper gets credit for putting Q Bakery on my radar screen. We were there as a requested stop back on 10/23/18 before I dropped him off at the airport. It was nice to see all the baked goods, menu items, mini-mart items and experience dining onsite. The filling banh-mis and steamed buns are a steal! The regulars definitely knew when the freshly baked bread were ready from the oven for purchase. I returned years later on 5/25/22 after other south end stops. It was quite the contrast due to the pandemic. No onsite seating, patrons and staff remained masked, items were bagged, streamlined products for sale. One thing that has not changed are the lines for fresh bread and banh-mis. The folks that work the production line and cash register have efficiency mastered. I recently bought their chạo tôm, which is a hot and greasy food item. They put it in a plastic-lined paper bag, which isn't suitable for wet or oily food, it could easily rip. I asked if they could use a container instead, and they said it would cost me an extra dollar. I suggested they consider using proper packaging, like a paper box, if they're selling hot food like this. When I asked to speak with the manager, the man at the counter said he was both the manager and the owner (Brian) , then laughed and giggled with his employee instead of taking my concern seriously. To make things worse, I noticed they charged me for something I didn't buy. When I pointed it out, he laughed again and handed me back the exact amount in cash, even though I had paid by Visa card. He didn't refund the tax I was charged. The whole experience felt careless and unprofessional. I'm sharing this so others can be aware: check your receipt carefully, and don't expect great customer service here. Other Asian stores sells 4 baguettes for $3.50. They have the small ones too, super reasonable price. They open super early in the morning too. They have varieties of banh mi's. These aren't your typical croissants (they're more like bear claw consistency than flaky and buttery) so as soon as that expectation is out of your mind you'll be able to enjoy what Q has to offer. I've had almond, cinnamon, and taro croissants here. The pastry is soft and not too sweet--my first bite of taro actually had me thinking it was more savory (it isn't) because the bread itself is just not overly sweet. It's delicious, and perfectly accompanies the filling in ratio and taste. You also can't beat the price at only 2 or 2.50 each. I love that they have canned bubble tea and ramune, too.
