Found this place while driving through town and stopped to give it a try. The apple pie was very good as well as the huckleberry ice cream. Honestly the only bad part of our visit was the young girl waiting on people at the counter, she had a horrible attitude even rolled her eyes at my husband two different times while we were ordering. The food was definitely not worth the poor customer service. We just left there and will likely never waste our time there again there are to many other places around with food that is just as good and better customer service. read more

Quick stop after Mt Rushmore trip. We saw this lil cute purple eye catching shop with a very very long lineeeee .... that's a good sign right ? It was near the closing time so they didn't serve their famous pie anymore. So we tried the chicken pot pie and ice cream . Wow ... that small bowl of potpie didn't disappoint us. So tasty . Nothing like we ever try before. Even the ice cream was good too. Try the huckleberry ice cream ... something different and great. Purple Pie Place was a let down. After hearing rave reviews of the Purple Pie Place we decided to give it a chance. Service was not friendly. Husband of the pie maker very unfriendly. We ordered 3 pies to try.Peach Pie was fair. Rhubarb was just ok. Bumbleberry was decent. None of which blew me out of the water.It is overpriced and not even close to pies my aunt made. This place lacks in customer service and uniqueness. Clearly survives solely on tourism. Very disappointed. On another note I'm sure sure the state health department would be too keen on allowing the owners dogs to walk through the restaurant. read more

This place is a novelty if nothing else. Stopped here on the way to Mt. Rushmore for lunch and pie. Lunch food was meh and kinda pricy for what it was. Over cooked "prime rib" au jus sandwich. The au jus was decent but having to ask for $1 worth of 4 slices of cold cheese was a bit ridiculous. Also, $4 for a side salad that consisted of lettuce, tomato, cheese and a few croutons is highway robbery imo. At least the croutons were homemade. Pie was spot on though. We had blueberry and bumbleberry (mixed berry and rhubarb). Both were worth the visit. Atmosphere was quirky and faux-country with a small town aesthetic in bright colors. We stopped for a ice cream cone and was disappoined. Cones were set cup side up so when the server stepped away from the register she had to put her finger inside my cone in order to grab it. Around 1:45 pm today I was disappointed to encounter a rude server who told us that the wait was 15 minutes. We told her we can wait. When she came back with a large order of drinks for a table by the "wait to be seated" sign. She then snarks it's just me. We were willing to wait. There were two open tables at the time. My family of 4 and a couple (who were waiting ahead of us, then went to the ice cream line and came back waiting behind us) we all chose to leave. I understand it's busy and it can be overwhelming. I'll give this place 2 stars because the food was decent when we finally got it and they had a silly dog. We stopped here on our way to Mount Rushmore from Wind Cave. We each ordered a sandwich. The guy who took our order said it would be "right out" and told us to have a seat outside/that they'd bring it out to us. Once we realized that it had been a half hour, we moved to an inside table. The guy at the counter stared at us for ~5 minutes but didn't say anything, so I finally said "we still haven't gotten our sandwiches." He then mumbled something about how he had them ready and had been "looking for us" but that was clearly a lie as we were sitting right next to his dog outside when he came out to bring her in and he disappeared into the back to make our sandwiches that he'd clearly forgotten. My other issue is that when we paid, the receipt said it included $2.80 in gratuity. Wtf kind of place automatically adds gratuity to a purchase of 2 sandwiches made at the counter? I will be fighting that portion of the charge with my credit card company. Overall, I'd recommend to keep on driving by this place. There are better places in Custer. The ice cream is Blue Bunny too so don't get excited when you see their sign for "Old Fashion [sic] Ice Cream." read more

Excellent service in the dining room. Their chicken pot pie is outstanding as well as their Bumbleberry pie.

This little hole in the wall had amazing food and dessert! We had prime rib dip sandwich, chicken pot pie, waffle cones and banana split. We will definitely be making it back for another trip someday! The staff was very nice too :) read more

Terrible service. The girls behind the counter did not take our entire order, they got one cone and moved onto the people behind us. We stopped here after visiting Mount Rushmore and after reading the rave reviews via Yelp. When we visited, they were only open for to go pies and ice cream. As they were cleaning and preparing for being closed during the winter, they still had a decent flow of customers. Even though the reviews for their rhubarb were superior, I am not a big fan of rhubarb. Instead, I ordered a bumbleberry pie and vanilla ice cream. They didn't have too big of a selection of pies left for the day and only had vanilla ice cream as a choice. Even with the limited selection, we were happy with our choice. The vanilla ice cream was thick as ice cream should be and very much tasted like old fashioned homemade ice cream. The pie itself was so fresh tasting and just the right amount of sweet. The crust of a pie is usually my favorite and this was perfect as the crust didn't taste burnt. Don't let the place fool you. PPP has a short but amazing sandwich menu in addition to ice cream and homemade pie. No beer or wine. The menus are near the cash register. Order at the counter and they'll bring your food. Small indoor dining room and a nice little patio area with umbrellas for the sun (and the unexpected rain shower). My guy had chicken pot pie and i had prime rib panini with horseradish sauce. No chips or anything came on the side, which was fine because we needed room for pie. I had blueberry with ice cream. Overpriced for low quality and even lower flavor ;-( It makes me sad to say this, especially since we saw the name, saw the building, happen to love PIE and they advertised CHICKEN POT PIE for dinner too... of course we had to stop! Funky fun interior and lots of seating outside too, but here's what went down... Chicken pot pies, crust was a HARD bowl and lid, the bowl was placed in a soup bowl, flavorless soup was poured on top, topped with a flat, hard, flavorless biscuit top, and SO not worth even $5. I added salt and pepper to try and help, no bueno. Plus the bread had the texture of hard/ yet rubbery like it had been in a microwave. I also had the salad bar, thank heavens for lettuce, beets, olives, and tomatoes (yes, that was all that was left in the cart bins!) Little monkey ordered the mac n cheese and it matched the other dishes, dry, no flavor. On to the pie, it happens to be our FAVORITE dessert and have never met a pie we didn't like... until the purple! We had a slice of the Bumbleberry, and honestly the crust was bready, without any flavor at all, and not flaky, bready! The filling was mushy and I don't know what they used as a thickener to get it to stand tall, but it was not sweet or full of yummy flavor... so sad. Great little shop for pie and ice cream. Their pies are great - my favorite part is their crust. It's the perfect level of moistness, crumbyness, and chewyness. I don't even know if those are words. Their ice cream is also really good and tasty, especially after you've been driving around and doing stuff in the sun like Mt. Rushmore all day. For the ultimate, well, you've gotta go 'a la mode.' The Purple Pie Place is deceiving. I really wanted it to be good. The pies looked good. But they were mediocre. The crusts were thick and flavorful, but the insides left a lot to be desired. I had blueberry and my wife had apple. The apple pie had a hint of cinnamon, but nothing else (it even lacked apple flavor). The blueberry pie had little flavor, no spices, and way too much thickener (probably corn starch). We left disappointed. read more

The prime rib French dip was a good portion size but I don't think it was prime rib given that the small slices of beef were grilled on all surfaces. The roll likely came from south dakota's version of Ralph's and was not toasted. Tasted like something I could make myself. The chicken pot pie essentially had a cracker laying on top of chicken filling. Food is a no, but maybe the pie is their specialty. Didn't try it so can't comment. read more

During the last week of June, my husband and I were staying in the cabins down the road. We noticed online the Purple Pie Place closed at 8 PM. However, there were still cars in the parking lot after 8:30. So, we stopped and were warmly welcomed in. We each got an ice cream cone and sat outside until after 9 PM. The owner, Bobby, was cleaning up and we had an opportunity to talk to him. He was absolutely the nicest guy and said that he never turns customers away even if it is closing time. What a treat and such a great business model. The ice cream was fantastic and the pies looked awesome. Bobby and his wife recently purchased the business and they are really putting their hearts in to it. What a pleasure as a customer to not be turned away or rushed out the door. The service was a bit on the slow side, But it has a family run, relaxed feel, and the weather was beautiful to enjoy the patio so we really didn't mind. We ordered the chicken salad sandwich for 3 of our people and there's wasn't a bite to take a pic of....... I ordered the salad which was lettuce, Gigantic chilled cubes of chicken, candied pecans and a strawberry. It was good. The kids had some mac n cheese, a hotdog with chips, and the ham and cheese panini. There wasn't anything left, so now PiE. We had the strawberry rhubarb, peanut butter, and cherry. They were all delicious and my understanding is that they are all made in house, as well as the bread for the sandwiches and rolls! I feel like we caught Triple-P at a bad time. Mid-afternoon, end of the season. The pie, though - 100% the real deal! We had blackberry and apple, both heated. Fluffy, but with lots of heft to them, they're a national treasure. Plenty of options for pie and other goodies, ice cream, and there is also a restaurant serving classic ice-cream parlor foods. The staff seemed a bit harried with an afternoon bump of business, and were out of coffee. We did get fresh coffee, although its quality was about standard for the area (must be the water).
