My husband picked up takeout for us to enjoy back at our hotel room. Unfortunately, the meal was underwhelming. While the portions were decent, several of the items arrived soggy and lacked flavor. Overall, the food was just average, and it didn't leave us eager to return. read more

My husband liked his Relleno, but it was very small. My enchilada plate was hearty, so I shared with him. No Margaritas, this place doesn't serve alcohol! Our server appeared to be very young and seemed unfamiliar with the menu, needing to check on nearly every item. Service was disorganized--we requested small plates for four people but initially received only one, then had to ask twice more to get enough. There were also several unexpected charges. A credit card convenience fee was added without disclosure, tortillas for fajitas cost $4.99 for three without being mentioned in advance, and a special order included an undisclosed upcharge. Additionally, an item was mistakenly placed on the wrong ticket and could not be corrected. The food value and quality are not worth the price and definitely not worth the hidden fees. While I felt sympathy for the server, who did not appear to receive support from the supervising adult, the overall experience was frustrating. We are road tripping for a few months and missed the back home Mexican food and decided to give Maria's a try. No disappointment here! The customer service is exceptional! In fact we were sitting outside because we had our senior pup adventuring with us. We got her a cup of water and the host came out with a bigger container for us to use. We were given chips/salsa/beans to enjoy while waiting for our meal. Hubby ordered street tacos and I got the chicken enchiladas. Both meals were great. Checked out a couple of restaurants on the main drag and decided on Maria's. Entered, greeted and seated immediately. Modest menu with the standard options. Chips, salsa and warm bean dip served as starters. Wifey ordered the chicken fajita burrito with cheese sauce. Huge serving arrived at the table. Contained rice, beans, veggies and chicken. Masterpiece dish. I ordered the taco salad and substituted chicken for beef and held the beans. Dish came to the table as two small taco bowels filled small amounts with lettuce, chicken, olives, jalapeño slices. Size of serving was disappointing but taste was very good. Surprisingly, additional sour cream and salsa did not accompany the dish. Service was adequate. Prices were fair. Would need to try a few more dishes before making a strong recommendation. read more

While our experience started a bit rough-a server told us to sit then no one came over for over 8 mins even though both waitresses made eye contact with us and preceded to help customers they sat after us. The young man that finally came over and took our drinks and order was a sweetheart and he made up for the initial issue of first sitting. Our food was delicious and surprisingly good! Don't know what people are complaining about here. I'm from Southern California and a lot of this lives up to Mexican food there. While not as "fresh" obviously, the taste was great! First, the chips with salsa also came with refried beans. It tasted homemade Next we had the tamale platter, which was moist and perfectly seasoned. We tried beef and pork tamale with both the red and green sauce. Very good mild spiciness there We then tried the fajitas, which I ordered the bistec rancheros with the grilled shrimp skewers. This was amazing as the fajitas was on a sizzling plate and the beef was seasoned with tastiness - tomato's, peppers etc. there was a nice hint of spice plus tangy taste to the roasted salsa. Rather than dousing dishes with a bunch of cheese, the cheese was put on the side. The corn tortillas were also house made. Overall we were pleasantly surprised to find such good Mexican food here! read more

Visited with a group of 11 friends and so glad we did. All fresh ingredients, which are appreciated on a 2 week vacation from home. Had their chips with their homemade guacamole and queso. For my meal, I had a stuffed chicken fajita burrito. All delicious! Comfortable, clean and cheerful ambience. Our waitress was attentive and personable. Spent 5 days in Custer and have eaten there twice. My husband has gone back for breakfast every morning and says it's just as good. Worth the stop! read more

There are not many options for vegetarians. I ordered nachos supreme, substitute beans instead of meat. They brought it to me with no beans. It also had a piece of meat in it. My husband ordered a bean and cheese chimichanga. He paid extra for white melted cheese which made it good. It had a stray zucchini in it. Our chips came with a free bonus French fry in it. It must be pretty wild back in the kitchen. They had two servers who were very busy and orders came slowly. You have to order rice and beans for an additional $4 for most dishes. Our boy waiter was pleasant and did his best to make our visit positive. Personally, I wouldn't care to return, but some might. read more

We had lunch at Maria's this afternoon after our visit to Crazy Horse. Because our dog was with us, we sat at the outside table (which was comfortably shady). The waitstaff immediately asked if she might bring water for Maggie, which she did. Then she brought our water and chips with salsa and a bean dip. The corn chips were light and tasty - a hint of salt and not at all greasy. I had fish tacos (lightly grilled tilapia; not breaded or fried) - delicious. Partner enjoyed his steak and onion tacos - commented that the steak was tender and had nice flavor. We enjoyed watching and visiting with passersby; waitperson was very attentive; food was definitely choices that we'd make again. We would encourage you to eat at Maria's. read more

The interior might not be that exciting but their guacamole is so fresh and chips are amazing. Some of the best tacos I've ever had and I eat tacos twice a week. (I had the shrimp tacos). I would definitely recommend this hidden gem when going to Custer. read more

Stopped in because pretty much everything was closed. Best decision I've made in a long time. Maria couldn't have been nicer. Very friendly and service was quick. I had the pork burrito and it was hands down the best I've ever had. Everything about it was fresh and homemade taste. Wife had the tamales and eat every bite. That's her best compliment. Alright. Third visit has been completed. My initial review draft rated this place as a solid 2-3 stars. The second visit a solid 2, and my last visit a 1 star. This is officially some of the most flavorless and bland mexican food I have ever had. I recently had an extended hospital stay with the horrible hospital food, and my food at Maria's reminded me of what the hospital served if they served mexican food. I expressed my disappointment in Maria's to a friend who had told me to keep trying it, because it was "good". She said the tamales were "excellent", so try those. Alright. I ordered a dozen to go. Because I love me some tamales. Well. Umm. I do not love these. They are very VERY thick on the masa, and the little meat that exists is flavorless and tough. The bean dip is probably the best thing they have served us, and even that was on the bland side. The salsa is mostly pureed tomatoes. I gave it three tries. We won't be back. I would eat somewhere else in town if I were hungry. My service has always been good and the people friendly. However, I cannot give any more stars based on service alone. read more

I went to the food truck about a month ago and it was phenomenal but the restaurant was TRASH. My friend and I sat for over 30 minutes to received our food and saw our waitress twice (once for the order and once for the payment and I had to yell for another waitress to start that process). I called ahead of time to ask if they have whole beans, rather than only refried beans. The nice girl with dark hair and the accent told me they did. I went there and ordered a plain bean and cheese burrito with whole beans and less cheese. I received my two burritos with refried beans and tons of cold, unmelted cheese - the exact opposite of what I ordered. I took them back to her, and she said that they do not have whole beans. I called to confirm before coming here and requested whole beans when I ordered! She did say she could give me more beans, which I didn't want because they weren't good and not what I ordered. I asked for a refund, but she said she could not because Maria was not there. Not a good customer service policy. I did end up taking the extra beans for my daughter, who decided to eat hers anyway. When I saw a food truck with breakfast burritos around the corner from where I was staying I was happy. First morning I ordered the chorizo and the bacon for my family and I. Our teenage boys were whining about how hungry they were (they always are) one day recently while I was out running errands and we saw Maria's had a drive-thru. I drive up expecting it to be fast food, but it wasn't. It was taking a while to complete our order, but then I saw the combo platters the boys got and man, was I jealous. The portions were large and it looked delicious. The boys confirmed my assessment as I drove them around, and said we should go there more often.
