The burrito was OK, but very little flavor -- it needed just a touch of salt!! The worst part of the meal was the tortilla chips -- definitely NOT authentic! They came right out of a bag. Overall I was disappointed with their style of "authentic" Mexican food. read more

Won't make any of their breakfast burritos without meat. Only one vegetarian option with no potatoes, no beans, and no changes. Can't even order an egg and cheese only burrito. read more

Tremendous fresh Mexican food, open from breakfast through dinner. The location is now a small lot next to the VFW on Mt Rushmore Rd, Custer's main street, roughly between 6th and 7th Streets. There is dining at picnic tables, under a tent, behind the food truck. We found it at dinnertime on a rainy night when visiting Custer and the food was so good we immediately made plans to stop by for breakfast the next morning. The generously-filled and tender tamales and the green chile burritos are standouts and they do great sausage or chorizo breakfast burritos as well. Very nice people, they were happy to adjust items for a 9 year old's taste buds. read more

The pork tamales are delicious! Authentic Mexican food. Friendly staff, great food. What more could you ask for?

The food is amazing and so is the service, ate there on the way back from Mount Rushmore!!

Hidden Gem! The chicken posole is made to order along with 3 homemade corn tortillas. It's spicy, so be sure and order some water! Neat and clean! read more

Caught this one at the end of the season. Closes for winter. Food and service were way above expectations. My fish tacos were fresh and light. My wife had the beef burrito and the quality was very good. Fast service. Great food. Cold drinks. They even had the college football game on above the bar. See you next time we are in Custer SD. read more

I will say this place was amazing! I got the steak quesadilla and my husband got the pork burrito. We are from Arizona where you get authentic Mexican food and this is authentic Mexican food. The staff was very friendly and informative about things to do. I highly recommend this Maria's! read more

We had lunch at Maria's and it was delicious- maybe the best Mexican food I have had. Chips are made there and the salsa seemed also homemade. I had a chicken quesadilla - I love quesadillas so have had my share but this one was the best by far. Chicken had great flavor and overall very good. Service was good also. read more

My fiancé and I are vacationing in Custer for the week. Being from Texas, we were excited to see a taco truck in town. My fiancé tried a breakfast burrito and although he was not impressed, he and I decided to give them another chance for dinner, mostly because the food truck is directly by us. We were quickly filled with disappointment. I had a bean and cheese burrito. The refried beans were runny, like a sauce almost, and an abnormal off brown color. The cheese was not melted. My fiancé ordered steak tacos that had 0 steak and a tiny portion of mediocre rice and runny beans. We threw it away. For what we paid, we should have gone to a sit down restaurant instead. read more

Excellent veggie burrito! We had been camping for a few days and it was a nice treat to come into town and order a tasty burrito. We came back for a 2nd time. read more

Food was above average but not by much - stingy with salsa which always annoys me at a Mexican restaurant.

Just ok Mexican fare, very bland. Tamales were very good and fresh but the sauce over them as well as the refried beans had no taste. Only soda, tea and water served, no sangrias or margaritas. read more

Service was good - food was awful. The waiter was nice and responsive to our table, however, the service was not supported by a decent meal. Would not recommend. read more

Went to Maria's twice and attempted to go a third time (she was closed on a rainy Sunday though) while visiting Custer for just a week! :) My husband and I are hooked on her bacon, potato and bean breakfast burritos with chipotle salsa! read more

Wanted to try Maria's since seen ad for it, I was not disappointed. Tried beef tamales with mild sauce they were outstanding and prices reasonable. read more

Stopped in here on our way to Mount Rushmore, it was located next to the VFW hall, which had a mural facing Maria's...it was painted amazingly, so the ambience for a little taco truck was actually pretty awesome. Then of course the food..oh god, the food. The sign outside recommended the tamales and they're not lying. It was 10 in the morning and these were some of the most delicious, tender, succulent pork tamales I've ever had. The order came with two tamales, beans and rice. Plenty of food but I really wanted to get another order, they were that good. read more

I have not had a burrito this good in a while. My husband got the tamales with the hottest salsa they make and it was actually very spicy. Seating is outside but they have a covered portion. They also offer a Veterans discount. read more

Who knew you could get awesome Tijuana-style street tacos in Custer, South Dakota? Well, ya can! The tamales were average and very small. Kids meals are a great deal; $3.50 for a small quesadilla, applesauce and juice. Will definitely stop again for the soft corn tacos. read more

Maria's Mexican - Cute little spot with plenty of street parking and covered seating in back. - Food Trucks Near Me - Custer, South Dakota

Maria's Mexican - Food Trucks Near Me - Custer, South Dakota

As Rapid City residents who like going for morning family hikes in Custer State Park, we pass through Custer regularly, and so I'm always looking for the perfect spot to stop for a post-hike lunch (covered in mud, sweaty, kids half-asleep). With Maria's Mexican, I think I've finally found the perfect solution. My wife and I had the green chile pork burritos and our daughter had the kid's cheese quesadilla. The burritos were excellent; just the right level of heat for a very good burrito. The quesadilla had too much cheese for the two-year old's taste (!), but she's used to our questionable practice at home of quesadillas being mostly filled with refried black beans, not cheese. But anyway, she did eat some, she liked the juice and the apple sauce it came with, and it was only four dollars. Frankly, anytime a two year who just went on a two mile hike eats anything, its a miracle. As noted by many of the reviews, Yelp has the address wrong: the food truck is located next to the VFW (721 Mt Rushmore Rd). I also asked while ordering my burrito what the hours were yesterday (07-03-2016) and she said 7 AM - 8 PM, Monday-Saturday (Closed Sunday). So, unless we're hiking on a Sunday, I know where I want to stop to get our lunch now! read more

The food has always been great. It too bad they hired a surly goth girl to be the point of contact with the public. The food is 5 stars, the service was 2 stars. read more

Great chorizo breakfast burritos. Yum! Who knew this CA girl could find good Mexican food in South Dakota?

Stopped here on our way to Wind Cave NP on Labor Day. We wanted breakfast burritos but they didn't open til 10:30 on Mondays so we hung out in town for a while until then. We ordered two pork tamales with red roasted salsa, a pork chimichanga with guacamole salsa and a pork burrito. We've traveled in Mexico a lot as well as all over the Southwest, lived in Colorado and have dined in Mexican restaurants, dives, food trucks extensively. The pork tamales with red roasted salsa on top are the very BEST we've ever consumed! Everything was great, highly recommend!! read more

This was the absolute worst Mexican food I have ever had. 25$ for 4 tacos that tasted worse than Taco Bell and two tamales that were nothing nut Masa. Im sure 90 percent of the clients are tourists so they are not looking for repeat customers. read more

Breakfast burritos were cold, rude service at food truck window and out of several items from the food truck(were told after we ordered.

Maria's success over the years is due entirely to the consistently good food and outstanding service that clearly comes from the heart. We've seen her business grow from a charming catering trailer beside the VFW to expansion into the VFW basement level (lots of seating and cute decor, with fresh flowers at every table!). My mother has ordered dozens of handmade tamales and tortillas over the years, all made with love and ready to pickup by appointment. Her menu features "greatest hits" common to Mexican restaurants, but with authentic flavors and a Oaxacan twist (I'm guessing, my husband's family is from Chihuahua). Her posole recipe is so good, a green posole that you can get with chicken or pork. I also love her chile rellenos; the egg batter is so fluffy and light, like a cloud! If burritos or fajitas are more your speed, get ready for HUGE portions! They've got takeout containers; your lunch tomorrow is covered. The chips and salsa come with a gently spicy bean dip that is to die for. And everything at reasonable prices. Two tips: if you want a beer or margarita with your meal, order it upstairs at the VFW and you are free to bring it down to Maria's to enjoy. Also, during peak season, you can also often find Maria's original trailer open for quick food to go! Great for bikers or visitors who want to bring food back to their cabins or camps. ¡Qué sabrosa es este comida de Maria! read more

Spent $16 dollars on a burrito and nachos. No flavor what so ever!! Save your money, please.

On a hot summer day, it's a cool, shady spot to rest from all the tourists. Delicious food. Great service.

Ordered 3 steak tacos on corn tortillas with rice and beans. Opened the box and there's 2 steak tacos on flour tortillas. When we went back to ask about it the girl said they didn't have any corn tortillas that weren't frozen and only 2 flour tortillas not frozen. So she gave us "the meat for 3 tacos on 2 flour tortillas." Didn't even ask if it was alright to change it, or offer a discount. Rice tasted like plain rice with taco seasoning. Meat for the tacos was chewy and bland. Not good. read more

I don't understand why this place has such high rating! We stopped by because all the reviews were 5 stars! Our experience was not so good! We waited 15mins for our food. The lady seemed impatient with me when I want to know the different fillings in different types of food, coz I'm not very familiar with Mexican food. I know in most Chinese restaurant, the staff are usually very friendly to explain different kind of Chinese food to Americans, because it's complicated and you want people in another ethnicity to understand to order, right? Why the same thing can't happen to me?!! After we took our food to our hotel, the quesadilla I ordered had a piece of hair in it, and I think I ate half of it!! So disgusting!! The food was okay. But the guacamole sauce was not hot at all!! Disappointed!!! read more

The best ! And very unassuming. Located under the local VFW for sit down or on the street in a truck for quick bit. But really, this food has a simplicity with so much flavor! Maybe, quite possibly the best Mexicano food I've consumed! Super satisfying and make sure to try the dessert empanadas read more

Hands down best place in Custer!! I really can't believe that this exists in the black hills where the palette tends to be more American than anything else. We have been staying in Custer State park and have been here twice in two days! The tamales are incredible and so are the burritos!! Everything is home made and really good. There really are two restaurants here, the food trailer and in the basement of the Vets Club witch is a sit down restaurant. The atmosphere is nothing incredible but it really is amazing food!! You must stop here and eat when you are in Custer you will not be disappointed! read more

Everything is homemade and WONDERFUL! The homemade Chipotle salsa is to die for!! The chicken enchiladas were great!! The lady that helped us w/ our menu selections was verrrrry nice and helpful! read more

Wow! Absolutely the best Mexican food in a 200 mile radius! So good, we ate here 2 days in a row. Everything is homemade and delicious- it has a Tex-Mex flavor to it. There is a food truck outside that serves breakfast as well. The restaurant is on the lower level of the VFW hall and is very clean and inviting. They are closed on the weekend and also from 3pm - 5pm. Definately worth stopping for, prices were very reasonable. read more

Maria did a fabulous job with the chicken and shrimp tacos. Asked if we wanted sauce on the side or with the dish, little things like that are really cool. The rice is really, really good as well. I wish her location was a little better because people who make worse food are doing better business, and that's too bad. To all of you out there, get off your rear ends and go an extra block for really, really good food. read more
