Stop here!!! Just do it! My husband and I stopped here for breakfast. He had the chorizo breakfast burrito with spicy chillyi sauce and I had the sausage breakfast burrito with mild red chilli sauce. Both were delicious. The portions were huge. The atmosphere is very inviting and the service was very personable. Plus they had Hugh cinnamon rolls, vanilla or cream cheese. This place is off the charts amazing! Wonderful, authentic Mexican food, with prompt, kind, and friendly service. (Our waiter Gustavo was absolutely "5 star.") Our group of 4 had the chicken quesadillas and a fajita burrito. They were delicious! (....and the beans served with the chips were the best I've ever eaten). Great food, service was good but be patient if our visit was a normal day for them it was busy and it took a bit to get our food. If you enjoy a margarita or paloma with your meal you won't get it here, they dont serve alcohol but that wouldn't keep me from visiting again. read more

We quickly found this place while driving away from our campsite during a storm. They nicely said we could shelter there even though they were backed up in the kitchen. Everyone was friendly. I ordered shrimp tacos. I asked if the chipotle cream sauce would be spicy and the waitress said she'd never tried it but probably not? She served it on the side which was good because it was actually very spicy.... Then I ate my dry tacos and the shrimp was so spicy my lips were burning and throbbing after eating them! My daughter also asked me to add that the beans that came with the kids meal were too spicy for her. read more

My sister and I ordered two plain bean and cheese burritos with rice and beans to-go, and she ordered one soda. Her total was $17.28 and mine was $14.50. For ONE plain burrito. The tortillas are hard, the rice is mush and for whatever reason covered with cheese, and the beans are decent but not nearly the best we have ever had. No chips on the side. No salsa. Saturday night around 7 pm and we decided to try Maria's. They had 2 servers working (that we saw) and they were always busy. We ordered our food and got our food in a good time. Chips, salsa and beans were complimentary. They were good. Unfortunately, our waitress never came to check on us because she didn't know we got our meals (the other server brought our meals out.) I had the steak quesadilla and it was good. (In my opinion it was not worth the $11 since it did not include any rice or beans. My hubby had the sopas. He said one was really soggy and he could not eat it. His meal came with rice and beans. We wanted ice cream so we ordered the sopapillas. We got it, hubby tried the ice cream but was disappointed to find out it was whip cream. We asked about it when we paid and they said they ran out of ice cream. That would have been nice to know before we ordered it. read more

My family enjoyed Maria's Mexican when we were in South Dakota on vacation....All 8 of us. This place and the service were awesome. Every single one of us said it was the best Mexican food we'd ever had. Felt very authentic and freshly made. Phenomenal salsa, tacos, enchiladas, fajitas - all of it was GOOD. Also, even with the great food, the service was GREAT as well. Our food was served quickly and fast. One of our parties is a 2 and a half foot terrorist in the form of our toddler. He was in a "mood" that day and refusing to eat what was ordered (and he requested). I wish I could remember her name, but our waitress, without being asked brought a small plate with a selection of potential toddler agree able food trying to see if she could make the little guy happy. It was an attempt in vain, but absolutely so appreciated. If we make it back to South Dakota we will absolutely visit Marai's again. It really was good :) read more

100% a hidden gem. I have eaten at me Mexican restaurants all around the country and this is one of the best I have ever had. The salsa is to die for and the tacos/burritos and so authentic and not heavy. If you are ever in the area this is a must try. What's the old story if you can't say something nice? What Mexican restaurant even this far north doesn't have a cheese queso dip. Oh this one doesn't. If your from Texas and looking for something remotely and I do mean remotely TexMex then this is not the place. The food was out quickly but the restaurant wasn't very busy and the service was adequate. I'm reviewing this nice restaurant from my previous experience. It's a beautiful restaurant. Of course, the food is usually more basic and simple. I'm from California. This previous experience was from my trip to some states in the west. The restaurant is located near some nice trees that look so country and mysterious at night. If you walk into the Mexican restaurant, you will see plenty of decoration and my bus tour group was feeling easy and relaxed at such a late part of night. For dinner, I decided to go with the beef steak fajita. Even our bus tour guide did not know what my food was, at first. Then, when me and the rest of the group saw the beef steak fajita, it was all working like magic. Like I've said, they serve mostly basic and simple food here. The fajita sauce is very unique. What's interesting, is the chips and salsa, because the chips and salsa also come with beans for dipping. I don't see beans with chips and salsa very often in California. That's very interesting. Having beans with mild red salsa does take the edge off of a long trip into this rural area. If you're traveling to Custer, make sure you don't drink too much and make sure you bring a nice pillow. It's good for a bus tour trip. When visiting the restaurant I was noticing the decorations on the walls. The environment is very comfortable. From the rumors I hear, restaurants in Custer close earlier for the night. Nevada and Arizona have more late-night entertainment. As we were going by on our bus I saw a nice little pizza restaurant close to Maria's Mexican restaurant. Custer is most certainly a place for country comfort. Maria's Mexican restaurant serves soup, fajitas, tacos, burritos and not much else. The restaurant could've done better with sauces and spices. We have to keep in mind that this is a Mexican restaurant in a small town near lots of trees near Mount Rushmore. I was enjoying the experience late last year around fall schedule. It was easy to be happy with other guests and the hard-working crew. In fact, I was waiting a long time for my beef steak fajita because the restaurant was working later than usual. It was a privilege to taste their wonderful steak and sauce combination. Our trip was still exhausting for me a week later. You can get drink refills, hot soup, and people who go with the flow. There was so much excitement for all of us, and, we were hungry for another bite. I'm already very familiar with the basic Mexican food items such as tacos and burritos and I hope customers really enjoy them in this part of America. They should get more nachos. That's for sure! I've been to better Mexican restaurants. But, for the pleasure, and, for the trip, it was a memorable moment at Maria's Mexican restaurant. read more

We've dined here a few times previously, and were always pleased but this visit left a lot to be desired. I ordered chicken mole, one of my favorite dishes. It was really disappointing. The flavor did not resemble any mole I've ever had. The dish had a chicken thigh and leg with rice and beans, and homemade corn tortillas (excellent). This entree is $10. Not worth it, in my opinion. My husband had three steak tacos with rice and beans, soft corn tortillas. He really enjoyed them. Chips were a bit stale, but they do provide warm bean dip and salsa complimentary. Total with water was $22 and change. Service was very slow. May be back if we're in the area again. read more
