This place deserves a higher rating! Pretty great Malaysian food. ROTI CANAI 4/5: Curry is mild in spice, fragrant in flavor. Roti itself is not as flaky and is a little thicker in some parts, but still pretty good. Would order again still. SATAY 5/5: The chicken has a really good char and brightness from the lemongrass. Peanut sauce's sweetness completes this. AYAM RENDANG 4/5 : The chicken falls off the bone. The red curry goes great with a bowl of white rice. It is more of a dry curry than a creamy curry compared to other Malaysian restaurants. BUDDHIST YAM POT 4.5/5 : A lightly fried bowl-shaped taro with some well seasoned and lightly sauced chicken, shrimp, cashes, and veggies inside. Some other restaurants go heavy on the fried exterior, but not this one. Texturally a really nice contrast between firm carrots, soft taro, and shattering of the cellophane noodles and fried webbing around the bowl. See below for preferences Good- 3 Cup Chicken/Sanbeiji, Fly's Head, Belacan Special OK- Shredded Beef with Chili Peppers, Baby Oyster Omelet/Oyster Pancake, Bitter Melon with Salted Egg Yolk, Mango Sticky Rice Bad- Mee Goreng, Rendang I went to this unique spot serving both Malaysian and Taiwanese a while back with a large group. The service was pretty friendly and was quick in bringing out dishes and refilling water. As said in the note, I heavily preferred the Taiwanese dishes. First to arrive was the Baby Oyster Omelet/Oyster Pancake/蚵仔煎 for $11.95. It was mildly sweet from the sauce, and otherwise, there was a good amount of greens and a pretty good amount of oysters inside. Compared to Taiwanese Gourmet, I liked that the sauce wasn't overly sweet, though I found the omelet itself to have a better texture at the latter place, as there were more oysters. Favorite of the Taiwanese dishes was the $18.95 3 Cup Chicken/三杯鸡/Sanbeiji. The version here was much more flavorful, with a balanced amount of sweetness, saltiness, and slight herbal flavors. The chicken was also a lot more tender, so overall, this was outstanding and an easy highlight. The other best dish was their take on Fly Head/Fly's Head/蒼蠅頭 for $17.95. There were plenty of garlic chives to add freshness, and it wasn't too salty from the black bean. Otherwise, it was spicy and balanced. This was also tasty. For the same price, there was also the Shredded Beef with Chili Peppers. This was spicier by comparison, and the beef was pretty tender. I enjoyed it along with the rest of the table. There was also the Shredded Beef with Chili Peppers for the same price. The beef was decently tender and had plenty of peppers to add a good kick. I liked the additional aromatic vegetables added on top, which added extra flavors and textures. Best of the Malaysian dishes was the $18.95 Belacan Special, which included okra/lady fingers, eggplant, and green beans, cooked in a sauce made from fermented shrimp paste. The vegetables were cooked down perfectly as they still retained a lot of texture, with the eggplant being a highlight. Otherwise, there was a lot of belacan, but not too much that the dish was too funky or salty. This was easily the best of the Malaysian dishes. The $12.95 Mee Goreng, listed as Indian style stir-fried noodles with authentic mild dried squid sauce with tofu, potato, shrimp, egg, bean sprouts, and onion, was alright. The price was reasonable, but I found it way too sweet. The remaining toppings were nice, and while there weren't many shrimp, I wouldn't expect that many at that price point. On a side note, I have a cephalopod allergy, so I'm surprised I didn't have a reaction to this dish. My least favorite main dish by a country mile was their take on Lamb/Kambing Rendang for $21.95, listed as lamb, coconut milk, chilis, and spices cooked over low heat. Outside of it being by far the most expensive dish, the lamb wasn't tender, being actually a bit chewy. The worst part was that compared to some of the other dishes, it lacked heat and flavor, with there being only hits of coconut milk or chili. This is one of my favorite Malaysian dishes, and I usually scarf it down, but I didn't like this at all. Last of the dishes, and unfinished, was the $17.95 Bitter Melon with Salted Egg Yolk. Due to the bitterness, I was one of the few who enjoyed it, while some of the other groups didn't touch much of it. I personally liked it, as I don't mind bitter flavors, and there wasn't too much salted egg that it was pasty. I wouldn't order this alone, but it would make a nice vegetable side along with a sweet or savory main dish. Last was the $9.95 Mango Sticky Rice. The mango was pretty fresh, but the rice could have used a bit more sweetness and a bit more coconut milk. It was perfectly decent. It feels a bit odd rating this place. The restaurant is located in a strip mall that includes a supermarket, and the parking situation is a total nightmare. It's to your best interest if you can park somewhere else. The free parking isn't worth the grief. Inside the restaurant the ambiance was cozy and inviting. It was still during the 15 days of Lunar New Year celebration so there were a lot of festive decors! The menu was extensive, covering Malaysian, Taiwanese, and Thai cuisines. We went at 7 pm on a Saturday. The restaurant was about half full. We ordered two Malay curry dishes which are supposedly pre-stewed. However, we had to wait for a whopping 25 minutes to get the first dish, and the second of the same curry chicken 5 minutes later. In my opinion, they were a matter of plating since the curry was prepared ahead of time so it shouldn't take that long and there was no reason why the two dishes didn't come out at the same time. It was aggravating. The two dishes we ordered, Curry Chicken Rendang and Nasi Lemak use bone-in chicken. My wife had trouble picking out the chipped bones from the meat, otherwise the flavor was good. Between the two dishes I definitely prefer the latter. It has less protein but makes up the difference with some pickled side and peanuts, making it a lot more interesting. Oh, and the coconut rice was nice and fragrant! One disappointment was the food wasn't hot enough temperature-wise. It took us just 15 minutes to finish eating and by then the restaurant was surprisingly at full capacity (we thought the later the less people). Palau Pinang has been around for decades but I never ventured to try this Malaysian restaurant as my first choice is usually Taste Good while in Elmhurst. Curiously, we decided to give it a try since we found a spot in the parking lot. We ordered salt and pepper squid which was perfectly crispy. The entrees we tried were Hainese chicken rice and Beef Rendang with rice. They were humble options that packed a great flavor punch. One of the meals I ordered was charged twice; although we pointed it out and they adjusted the bill, it should not have happened in the first place. The bathroom was very dirty, and the sink barely had any water--apparently the faucet is controlled to release only a minimal amount. During our meal, our plates were never changed, and the service overall was poor. Despite this, they still expected an 18% tip. So I came here for dinner after my walk and honestly speaking it was a pretty good experience. The menu is quite big with various cuisines. I went with the Lu rou fan which is a Taiwanese braised pork with rice. It came with a tea egg and yellow radish. I can only wish that the portion was bigger haha. Pulau Pinang is one of the few restaurants in New York that offered "Yu Sheng" which is a super popular sashimi/salad dish in Malaysia and Singapore around Chinese New Year. We ordered the Lucky Salad, Sweet n' Sour Red Snapper, Seafood Crispy Noodles, Taiwanese Meatball, Balacan Kang Kung, and Butter Medium Shrimp (salted egg shrimp basically). Loved loved loved the lucky salad!! If it is chinese new year, you must get this for all the prosperity and other wealth that comes along with this!! It was actually my first time trying taiwanese meatball and definitely really liked it as well - a bit sweet yet interesting. Balacan Kang Kung is a little salty but nonetheless good. I could probably do without as much oil. Salted Egg Shrimp and Seafood crispy noodles I think I could've done without because the shrimp was salty, too salty even though it IS salted egg shrimp but it is what it is. As someone from Taiwan, I consider a Taiwanese restaurant to be good if the stinky tofu is good . Their stinky tofu was good, and one of my favorite dishes of the meal. I also liked their 3 Cups Chicken, and all of the other dishes we ordered. In addition to Taiwanese dishes, we also ordered some dishes with a more Malaysian flavor (for example, a curry beef stew). In its latest incarnation they still focus on Malaysian food though offer Thai and Taiwanese options as well. Maybe not the most acclaimed of the Malaysian options nearby but they have the most space and large tables to accommodate groups! For my recent order I got: - clay pot pearl noodles: this a dish made of handmade rice noodles that are hand-rolled so the center of the noodle is thicker and ends taper off. If you eat in at the restaurant this comes cooked in a clay bowl but ordering to go you get the plastic take out container like the rest of the noodle soups. These noodles are served in a kinda egg-drop soup type gravy with chicken, tofu, shrimp, fish cake, mushroom and Chinese veg. Pretty hearty and I usually enjoy this since it doesn't feel as heavy as some of the wok-fried noodles. - capitan noodles $12: wok-fried wide rice noodles and thin noodles together with pieces of chicken, fish cake, a Chinese veg (can't recall which one), and crispy shallots. This what a decent wok-hei flavor though I'm tasted like maybe it was cooked with lard and much oilier than I expected. - pinang udan mee $12: yellow noodles with shrimp, fish cake, spinach, bean sprouts and half an egg in a shrimp broth. I bought a take out and the first thing I noticed was the smaller container on soup. When I usually order noodle soup, it's either in a big quart size or at least 3/4 filled on the quart size and not in a pint size soup. I'm thinking it's fine since my bowl is smaller. When I actually open my noodle container I couldn't help but laugh. The amount of protein is barely there. Two pieces of small shrimps with the digestive tract still intact, two super thing slice of fish cake and inside the soup had two sliver size pork/beef and also half an overcooked boiled egg. I did take out since I didn't feel like cooking but I ended up adding my more eggs and shrimp on my end so I still had to cook. The amount of food you get is pretty bad.
