    kaw yay khao swal
    Brian S.

walked in on a whim and wasnt sure what to get but i was recommended the kaw yay khao swal with duck. the siup was super starchy and pretty light in flavor. i thought the vegetables added (water spinach?) didnt taste the freshest and the duck was cooked well but gamey like duck usually is. wasnt the biggest fan but some of their other noodles looked pretty good.

    Kya oh Sichat with chicken

The Kya oh Sichat (dry vermicelli garlic noodle) has more of a sesame oil flavor profile than at other places, so it's much less garlic forward than your typical, but decent overall.

I came in on a whim after my haircut. Decided to try it out and i enjoyed it. Service was friendly and good came out quick. I ordered the Nan Gyi Thoke and the Mohinga. This was my first time trying Burmese food and I liked it! The nan gyi thoke is a rice noodle salad that is dressed in a light curry sauce. It's nutty and spiced from the garam masala and other seasonings. The mohinga is a fished based soup with rice noodles. The soup is thick and you can taste tumeric, lemongrass, and fish sauce. It's topped with this amazing lentil fritter and paired with boiled egg and fish cake. Overall, I recommend Sophie's Rangoon Kitchen!

Burmese food! What a great addition to Elmhurst. Happened to be walking by and discovered a new restaurant serving homemade Burmese cuisine, bonus a giant TV showing Brazil vs Netherlands world cup match. Family run, friendly service, detailed menu and post it's on the wall explaining the dishes as well as various sauces and condiments. The beef biryani was so tender and the rice was fluffy and flavorful. The pork vermicelli noodles was equally delicious. The pandan coconut noodle desert drink needed the addition of crushed ice to cut through the sweetness but would definitely get it again to bring home. Would definitely recommend and come back again.

I really enjoyed this Mom and pop Burmese shop located on Broadway. My husband and I were just passing by. We noticed how good the food looked so we decided to give it a shot. Everyone inside was very friendly and happy to explain any of the food to us. The portions were fair or generous for the pricing as well as packed with plenty of protein and flavor. Only criticism I would have is that I wish I had a cup of ice with the drink that I got. Next time I'll know to get that to go and be able to do that modification myself. I just found it to be a little bit too sweet to drink on its own. I'll definitely come back here to try more items from their menu.

Love to see more restaurants opening in this block, look pretty sad to see these empty front storefront in this neighborhood. Small place with casual seating, homey vibe. You walk straight to the cashier to order. I only had Burmese food twice before, but I never had mohinga. Upon ordering she asked if I want some fish cake topping for extra $2, with that the total came up to $16 and change. Such a flavorful dish, so many different texture, lighter than Thai style curry. Really solid dish, although I would skip the fish cake next time, it doesn't need it. I would be back to try more and try their drinks next time!

Laphet Tote/Pickled Tea Leaves Salad. $12.99.. Alright. The only dish I preferred at other spots

Note- Uploaded photos of the menu. On a side note, some dishes such as the ohn no khao swè/curry chicken noodle soup are only available on the weekend. No reservations. Best dishes were the Mohinga and Dan Bout, but all were tasty. Anyway, I was here a few days ago with a group of 6, and this new casual Burmese place joins a list of many excellent restaurants on this block in Elmhurst. Even compared to those, this place is tiny with no reservations. While tiny, the food here packs in flavor. The staff was friendly and did what they could to assist with our larger group. As we were unaware that some options are only available on weekends, our host changed up some things. Our only smaller plate was the $15.99 Wat Thar Dote Hote/Assorted Pork Intestines, or really offal, with braised pork meat, tongue, ear, heart, liver, stomach, and egg served with tangy dipping sauce. This dish, normally served on skewers, was originally created by the Burmese-Chinese, and that makes sense in terms of flavor, as the various pork products had a mild five-spice powder and soy flavor with a bit of sweetness. Otherwise, the pork products were tender and had a nice mix of textures, with the only one having a particularly strong flavor being the intestine. It was tasty overall and good to share, and I feel like it would also be a perfect drinking snack. Otherwise, the first thing that arrived was my favorite dish of the evening. This was their excellent take on Mohinga/Rice Noodle Fish Soup for $12.99, listed as rice noodle, aromatic lemongrass fish soup, banana stem, boiled egg, fish cake, and crispy fritters. The last time I had a particularly good version was the old location of Little Myanmar, back when it was Yun's Cafe nearby in Jackson Heights. The new version in the East Village did not feel the same, but this checked off all the boxes. There was plenty of spice, some fish, and a wide range of textures all over a large portion of rice noodles. I would heavily recommend this. Our other favorite dish was the Dan Bout, listed as aromatic baked rice with a choice of beef cubes or chicken thigh served with cashew, dried grapes, fried chili, and pickled mango, where it is $14.99 for beef, or $12.99 for chicken. We went with the beef version, and this was an excellent choice as it was fork-tender. The beef had a wonderful mix of spices, and the rice below, while not the softest, had some nuts and grapes to add some extra texture. This was excellent also Their version of Laphet Tote/Pickled Tea Leaves Salad, a mix of crunchy mixed nuts and peanuts, napa cabbage, juicy tomatoes, and savory dried shrimps for $12.99, was solid. It had a good mix of spices and a good amount of crunch with a bit of a sour fermented flavor from the tea leaves. I would say that this was the only dish I preferred at Little Myanmar, as this was comparatively easily the smallest portion, and I found their texture a bit better. Our last dish was the $13.99 Kway Oh/Vermicelli Meatball Soup, listed as vermicelli in bone broth soup with a choice of meatball, fish paste, fish ball, egg, quail egg, pork liver, Chinese broccoli, and served with soup/chili sauce on the side. We chose the pork version, and this was the lightest tasting of all the dishes, with the broth being a mildly flavored bone broth with a bit of pepper. The meatballs/fish balls were bouncy, and the noodles had a soft and slightly chewy texture, which became richer once the egg was introduced. This was tasty, and I can imagine it being very comforting when winter hits. Dessert consists primarily of drinks, and I went with the Mote Latt Saung/Palm Sugar, with pandan noodle, palm sugar, and coconut strips for $7.99. There was also Falooda, as well as a version of my drink made with coconut milk instead of palm sugar. It was lightly sweet with a mix of textures, though next time, I would just stop at Pata a few doors down. This is an excellent new restaurant with some bold flavors. The prices are reasonable, the food is good quality, and the people are friendly. Would recommend, heavily.

Updating my review to give Sophie's its well deserved 5 stars! We finally had a chance to try the Mohinga here and it is PROPER and very good! My fiance noted that Sophie's dishes are the closest to what his family prepares when it comes to flavor profiles. The mohinga was generously portioned and came with all of the toppings. Prices are very reasonable. The nann gyii tote or curry noodle salad that we ordered the first time was also really good & flavorful. Would definitely recommend these two dishes.

    Falooda and Dan Bout
    Josh B.

I enjoyed the chicken biryani, where cashews and raisins offered unexpected textures. The chili and pickle condiments on the table had intense flavors. Falooda was a multi-pronged sugar delivery mechanism with Instagrammable green and red layers. There's ice cream and...was that banana for a moment? The service was excellent. They were very welcoming and happy to explain the offerings to a newcomer.

Bright but smallish Burmese restaurant. Prices are reasonable and for the most part good. It's a self service restaurant. The nann gyii tote (a dry chicken noodle dish) was delicious. It one of my favorite Burmese dishes. Oily but full of flavor! It comes with a simple clear soup which I didn't care for. The mohinga was ok; I had better. The falooda was also great!

    Curry Noodles

My husband and I stumbled upon this unassuming little spot and were immediately intrigued bc it was packed. We found out they had just opened not too long ago, so they're clearly still finding their rhythm. The food did take a bit of time, but honestly, when you peek into the kitchen and see Burmese aunties and uncles cooking everything from scratch, you know you're in good hands. Now onto the food. Burmese food is surprisingly hard to come by in NYC, so I was genuinely excited to see one open. We originally had our hearts set on the garlic dry noodles, but they were sold out for the day, which honestly might have been a blessing in disguise. We ordered the curry noodles instead, and wow. This was hands down one of the most delicious dishes I've had in a while. The flavors were incredible. It was layered, bold, and perfectly balanced. A little spicy, a little sour, a little salty -- every bite hit differently. The noodles had that ideal chewy texture, and the crispy garnishes on top added the perfect contrast. It was comforting but exciting at the same time. I'm already looking forward to coming back (and hopefully snagging those garlic noodles next time).

Everything here was absolutely delicious. I came here on the weekend right when they open and it was already crowded. Seating is limited especially for larger groups. I can't want to come back.

First time trying Burmese food. The place is modern and clean. I had the Kway Oh soup and Assorted pork. bith were nice. Worth a vist to try new cruisine.

The laksa was solid with a good balance of curry, lemongrass, and coconut flavors. Loved the noodles they used since they were plumpier and chewier than other nones I've had. I knew we had a curry chicken which was quite tender and flavorful. There was a flat noodle with seafood which was spicy. The was a preserved tea leaves salad that was very tasty. The pork neckl was interesting, a little sweet served with sticky rice. All the flavors were unique with some being spicy while others were mild. This restaurant has changed for the better.

I was at this Burmese place, which also sells some Thai food and other things, with a group relatively recently, where we shared a bunch of their thotes/athoke, or salads, as well as two other dishes. I think I remember going here one other time and getting either the Shan Khauk Swal Thoke or Nan Gyi Thoke, but I'm not positive, as it was a good while ago. The menu has gone through some changes over the years, but it's still reasonably priced. The service was friendly, and the vibes are casual, with the food being good overall, even if I prefer some other spots for Burmese food. To drink, I noticed a tea being ordered at another table and got an iced one, which I think was a very reasonable $3.50 or similar. It was refreshing and tasty with a mild sweetness from condensed milk and a strong tea flavor, and I would recommend it if you're a fan of similar drinks from the surrounding countries/South East Asia. Our only smaller dish that wasn't a salad was the A Kyaw Sone, a mix of fried vegetables with a tamarind chili sauce. As with most other dishes, there are small and large sizes, and we got the large, which was $14.99. The portion was quite large, with four different types of fritters and a very tasty dipping sauce, which had some sweetness and spiciness. In terms of the fritters, I was happy that the batter was light, but I did find them to be just a bit oily, with this especially being the case for the fried clump of greens. My favorite was probably the onion one, as I liked the light sweetness, and it felt a tad less oily. The larger ones, which each had a different filling, were also more unique with a soft inside. My favorite of the thoke/salads we tried was the Gin Thoke for the same price, with "gin" referring to pickled ginger, with there also being dried shrimp, crushed peanuts, garlic, and sesame seeds. The ginger added a sharp little bite, and there was otherwise a good mix of crunch. This was also the least dressed, which I liked a lot. While I prefer Little Myanmar for this athoke, it was still tasty and cheaper for the large portion size. Also for the same price was the Latphat, or Lahpet Thoke, with fermented tea leaves, tomato, cabbage, fried shrimp, crushed peanuts, fried garlic, sesame seeds, and a 100 minuscule distinct shift in crunch, was also tasty. This is the signature dish of Myanmar, along with mohinga (more on that later.) The portion was large, but this was the wettest version of this dish, which I wasn't the biggest fan of. Otherwise, there was a light fermented flavor and plenty of crunchy textures. Our last thoke was the Pa Zun Chin Thoke, with sour shrimp, green chili, cilantro, oil, and onion, which only has one size for $12.99. The person who ordered this expected it to be pieces of shrimp, but instead, I would describe it as fish cakes made from shrimp. The fish cakes reminded me of a fermented dish from Laos, which makes sense in hindsight, and I liked the texture. Otherwise, the dish had some kick and some saltiness. I know a few others disliked this, but I enjoyed it as well. The last dish we ordered as a group was the Grilled Pork Neck and Shoulder, served with papaya salad and sticky rice. This was the largest portion of any dish, which makes sense with the $20.99 price tag. The pork was very tender, and the papaya salad had a slight kick to it. I liked that there were two types of sticky rice, and the green sauce on the side, while not spicy, added some nice extra herbal and sour flavor when wanted. This was also tasty. To go, I decided to order a Mohinga, or Burmese Fish Noodle Soup, for $11.99. This consisted of thin rice noodles in a fish soup with ginger, lemongrass, onion, garlic, and fried rice powder served with hard-boiled egg, crispy split chickpea, cilantro, lemon, and crushed red chili. The dish was packaged nicely with the crunchy toppings and noodles separate from the soup. Compared to other places, I found it a little bit spicier, which I enjoyed, though it lacked a little bit of depth of flavor compared to Sophie's. It was also missing the crunch from the banana blossom flower. Otherwise, there was plenty of crunch, and the portion was quite large for the price. In terms of spots, I put it above Little Myanmar, below Sophie's/Burmese Bites, and way below the now-closed Yun Cafe. The food here was tasty, with a couple of issues. I found in general that the dishes were overdressed, and this was especially the case with the salads/athoke. While not my favorite Burmese place, the portions were large for the price, and the flavors were good.

We often just pick up a Set A for 1 (currently for $12.99; $14.14 with tax and by cash), and complement that with dishes from other nearby restaurants -- there are a wealth of excellent options, some even on the same block. The spicy ginger sauce -- the "secret sauce" that distinguishes Eim from its competitors, might be an acquired taste, but it is quite an addicting kick. The spicy ginger sauce also helps mask some overcooking issues. Fans take note that Eim recently began to offer its spicy ginger sauce for sale separately, for $10.89 plus tax for a 12-ounce bottle. Eim keeps to a street food motif with a preparation area that looks like a street cart, and by wrapping take-out orders in butcher's paper. This small shop has seating for about 13 people -- two tables of three, two tables of two, and three counter-height seats. There are no customer accessible restrooms.

It's in the middle of nowhere Elmhurst, off the main strip of Broadway. The place itself is oddly situated as well, and in an oddly shaped building. But the little dining room reminds me of an intimate French bistro, but with Thai accents. Very homey feeling. Everything we ordered was top notch in flavor. Just an explosion of flavors in each bite. Likewise service was excellent. We went on a Wednesday night so we got extra attentive service. Looking forward to bringing our family and friends here. Don't know what's wrong with Yelp this week but I can't load any pictures. Will update with pics later.

Fish cake and Breaded Chicken were dry. Food trays on warmers but don't think they kept them hot enough, like the fried rice which was cold. Had to ask about the 6 curries - weren't labeled at first. From different regions. Some had proteins like chicken feet, pork, chicken. One was fish but only saw a few pcs of halved fishballs. The peanut curry was slightly sweet and was just the sauce. One was very spicy so just took the veggies and meat. Instructions were finally posted on how to put together the curries with the noodles and toppings, which were set up on the table as well. It was a good tasting. Service was good. Preferred cash payment but accepted credit cards with added 3% fee. Decor was bright with colorful flowers hanging from ceiling etc. Space is not that big. Restroom available. Some street cleaning parking and the rest were metered along Whitney Ave.

I therefore had no choice but to come here. This place is the pioneer of uncompromising Northern Thai cooking, in all its super spicy, funky, sour, & delicious wonderment, & they don't disappoint. Very clean inside, reasonable prices, super courteous staff, & full bar, including large selection of NA cocktails. Also - don't sleep on the cooler by the front door. There is a CRAZY selection of pre-made foods to go & reheat & home & eat over rice that are all amazing, & less $ than the food on the menu. There is also a giant selection of amazing to-go Thai desserts. I usually go across the street to 3 Aunties Thai Grocery for that stuff, but it's getting rocked even harder over here. What's not to like ?!!!? The menu here is also like 30pp long, w/ at least 10pp of veg options, & 5pp of desserts. I'm honestly thankful I don't live closer bc this place wld make me fat!

From the curries to the noodles and rice dishes, you seriously can't go wrong. Every dish is packed with so much flavor that you immediately want to go in for the next bite. The staff is always incredibly attentive and kind, and you can tell they have such a family-like atmosphere among them. The ambiance is also beautiful, with plenty of floral decor both inside and out. From the outside, you would never expect there to be such a gorgeous garden in the back, but it's stunning! Between all the greenery and the water fountain, it makes the whole dining experience even better. SriPraPhai is an absolute must-try and a place I'll continue coming back to again and again!
