We haven't been here since over a year ago. What a sweet surprise with the new chef. New flavors and way improved and knowledgeable staff (Anthony was attentive and knew so much about the dishes) and still having outdoor seating was a huge plus for us. The wings are crispier than they were in the past, but very tasty. I had the pork, my husband had the burger. the tres leech was not soppy and not sickeningly sweet, very good! Went here with my friend that I haven't seen in a while and I have to say it was pretty good. We sat inside on a hot day and enjoyed our cocktails & beer (draft beer forgot the name). Although the beer was $9 it was very good and tasty. We started off with the onion rings & sweet & spicy wings. Onion rings seemed like it was missing the onions and mostly tasted like the batter coating it , the wings were very good and so delicious deff recommend. I got the NY strip steak medium rare (if you like well done pls discard yourself from the earth), it was very good and cooked right. Expensive place but quality food & atmosphere. read more

After a day of figuring out what to eat my friends and I stumbled upon this place. They had really good reviews so happy to sit and dine outside. They were indeed very friendly which is why they got one star. Our waters had dirt sitting at the bottom of them and when we asked for new ones they still had dirt in them. The food in my opinion was not worth the price at all. Burger was dry, ceasar salad croutons were extremely stale. My fish and chips was greasy came out late bc they had messed up my order. In addition to tables and a bar, there is a seating are with couches near a fireplace and a large screen TV above it. At $15, their hamburger is pricey and it came out "much rarer" than the medium rare I ordered. My friend added to shrimp to his salad and that was another $10. Seemed high to me. Our server was very helpful, friendly, and efficient. Based on friends who love this place, I would try it again. read more

My wife and I went for dinner there last night for the first time since their reopening and were truly impressed with everything - from the salad to the very generous steak portions they served, cooked to perfection, to the final dessert. Definitely a hit! The place is a small spaced with warm ambience and scrumptiously delighting food and drinks menu. "Call it a day" is a stunner drink takes you straight to some good tropical vibes. Chicken wings, Tuna Crisp are absolutely worth the hype especially if wings are ordered with Garlic sauce, goes amazing with the honey coating of the wings. Absolutely incredible! Didn't know what to expect when we arrived. Vincent who helped get us settled was great and took our drink order. Best Side Car I've had in a long time. Every appetizer, entree, and dessert was on point! The executive chef, Nick does a fabulous job with creative plates and presentations! To round up the evening we had the most delicious Espresso Martinis! The place is chill, with a great fireplace. It does have enclosed indoor seating in the back. Honestly, I could have snacked on the apps and dessert all night. Especially the tuna crisp app and the warm chocolate dessert! Delicious! Look forward to going back. Looks like they change up the menu ofter to keep it interesting and blend with the seasons. Oh, and I forgot to mention its Farm To Table. I have been meaning to come to this restaurant for quite some time and I'm glad I did. It was definitely a little difficult to spot because the outside sign wasn't so visible from the direction we were coming in. There's ample parking space in the lot located behind the restaurant. The inside is pretty cozy and quaint with a nice fireplace located towards the back of the restaurant. We went during lunch time and to be honest all the appetizers sounded amazing, however none of the entrees really caught my eye. We ended up getting 3 appetizers and an entree. The pork belly was perfectly cooked and well seasoned. I also got the burrata which was phenomenal. It was charred smooth and silky, absolutely delicious. The last appetizer we got was the octopus which though it had good flavor was a bit over cooked for my taste. The tail was pretty crunchy when I bit into it. All and all it was a nice place and pleasurable experience and will definitely try again, but next time for their dinner menu. read more

My wife and I decided to try this restaurant. Bottom line the restaurant is way overpriced, has small portions of food, it's small and the tables are tightly squeezed in to try and accommodate more guests. Once you walk in you notice how loud the restaurant is. Holding a conversation and hearing the other person is difficult. The service was ok although we made a reservation and we still had to wait 15-20 minutes and never got the table we reserved. Very disappointed overall. Would never go back due to to high prices, small portions and loud setting. Oh and they add a 3 percent credit card convenience charge onto your bill. read more

Dining here was an absolute delight! I ate with four friends outside and never felt crowded even though the outdoor dining area was full (on a Wednesday so clearly they're doing something right!). I'll get to the food and drinks but the best part of our experience was hands down the service! Lorik was new (we were his first table solo!) and so personable and helpful. He was eager to help and when he couldn't answer a question about a particular sauce and allergens, he went to the chef. Great answer, Lorik! He was great and will only get better. (Also a personal thank you for reusing our plastic water cups upon my request). Kaitlyn was his server trainer and being in the industry myself, I know Lorik's service speaks volumes about Kaitlyn's guidance. She was knowledgeable about the menu and able to give us descriptive and thoughtful recommendations on food and wine (even our wine snob of a friend was impressed!). I could tell they were VERY busy, but we never felt ignored or rushed. The backwaiters were also very helpful, polite, and accommodating. Cocktails and food change seasonally so there is always something new to try! I had La Cura, a reposado and mezcal based drink. Delicious! Very well-balanced and the ginger was fresh and helped me pretend I was being healthy. I tried my friend's Canadian Tuxedo (great name- aged rum and maple) and was equally impressed. Favorite appetizers were the octopus (PERFECT romesco sauce!) and the apple teriyaki wings. Everyone loved the entrees as well. The plate of lamb ribs was licked clean. My favorite was the rabbit- such a great use of grapes and classic flavors! I never go out and order rabbit but I'm glad I did. Everyone seemed to enjoy the pork shank but meh? It was good, cooked perfectly, but I cook carnitas, heavily seasoned pork dishes and a sh*t ton of black beans so I suppose I was looking for more in the dish, especially the "mojo verde". My favorite part of the dish were the sweet potato chips so that should say something. But if a dish being "good, not great" is my biggest complaint, I'm really searching and should not be a deterrent to anyone! I came to Publick House at around 5:30 prior to an escape room on a Saturday evening it was extremely quiet and you ease drop on everyone there. Also it was July and FREEZING cold. We even had to run back to the car and snatch our jackets. After like 15 minutes (considering there was nobody there and that it was freezing cold in July) came around and asked for drinks. They didn't have much but I got water and again was freezing cold with there being like no water and just ice. She then came around like 30 minutes later (again there was nobody there) and asked for appetizers (again they didn't have a lot) I got nothing but my dad got something I forget what it's called and was super spicy. She came again and asked for main courses, I got pasta which when it came out was hard as a rock.the French fries that came with it were more like fried fried. When we finished dinner she came and asked if we wanted dessert I said yes and got a chocolate chip cookie which had nuts and Trenuts melted ice cream and was soggy and it didn't say there were nuts. First we get here sit down and wait almost 10mins before where asked what do we want to drink then wait another 5mins before we're asked what we want to eat. After we get our drinks and food it started to get alittle better we were moved to better seats and the night was better but I would not be coming here again unless it's for drinks or dessert. My husband had the loaded baked potato soup which was loaded with potatoes and flavored with a touch of bacon. My lunch was Bibb salad with a crab cake. Very fresh salad and tasty crab cake. My husband let me sample his fish and chips which were crispy and tender inside. Very delicious fries were on the side and the tartar sauce was different in a good way. My meal I felt was spectacular. My spouse less so. First I had the Tuna Crisp appetizer. Lovely soft tuna atop a deep fried crispy rice triangle. The spicy sauce was perfect. I could have eaten 20. I had the Veal Strip Steak which are really veal tenderloins atop mashed potatoes with a layer of spectacularly salted wild mushrooms. The sauce and the mushrooms provided the salt flavor for the veal. It was wonderfully seared. I ordered medium veal and it melted in my mouth. My wine was the Ramsey Pinot Noir. My husband was underwhelmed by his $22 hamburger. It was just ok and served with ok fries. He said his Ceasar salad was overdressed. The service was very good. There was a bit of jackassery when I asked the waiter what was on the mushrooms as they tasted like heaven. He came back to tell me hot pan oil salt. I had said to him as he tried off at my question was this just salt or a bit of soy sauce or what. He delivered the answer with the flippancy of a chef and the added that the market they go to in PA sells them for a farm that grows NOTHING BUT mushrooms. Mushroom farms grow nothing but mushrooms. Most are located in upper Delaware. I acted enlightened. Jackassery aside, the mushrooms were so wonderful in my mouth, I forgive all. I recommend. read more

Upscale pub nestled in a quiet corner of Westfield and Mountainside. In the summer they setup the place with open windows and create a very inviting atmosphere. In the COVID era they have setup a dedicated outdoor seating area which looks very nice. Menu is always changing and while pricey, a nice experience worth the extra dime. read more

With that being said the food is great, some of the best wings I've ever had as they are extremely generous in flavor as well as meat. The pork belly is absolutely righteous along with the burger. We visited for dinner in a Friday night a few weeks ago. My husband were seated at a table for 2. We were then moved to a table for 4 as we learned a friend wanted to join us. The restaurant kindly accommodated us to a larger table where we ordered appetizers and drinks while waiting for our friend who took a little while as he was stuck in commuting traffic. It started getting annoying as the staff kept coming over and asking if our friend was showing up. Then the Manager/Owner came over and rudely and angrily inquired where our friend was and that we had been sitting there an hour -- not true ! We were stunned as we have been dining at this establishment for years and supported them during Covid. As mentioned we had ordered apps and drinks which are not cheap. We will not dine there again -- going to go to the new Black Sheep restaurant-- where the Publick House chef moved to. Still amazed we experienced such horrible customer service. read more

I've eaten here quite a bit and always have a good meal. Sometimes better than others but never bad. I was there last night and I had the veal chop. The veal was very tasty and came with mushroom and mashed potatoes which were both very good. I could have used something green though; spinach, kale, asparagus, etc. Some sort of green veggie as the meal was essentially just meat and potatoes - tasty but lacking. Anyway, I very much appreciate that they have a number of gluten free options. I've got an allergy and it's nice to be able to order with ease. Curiously though, none of the desert options were GF. I was going to order a desert but no avail. Just a suggestion, I know making GF is time consuming and may not be economical but there are a number of gluten free bakeries in the area (like Chez in Cranford). Perhaps publick house could sell his products (for a cost, of course) as a GF option. Just a thought. Regardless, I do recommend this place if you're looking for a good meal. read more

Publick House is one of those places you drive by without really realizing its there. With Westfield and all its choices right down the street, it gets overlooked. I stopped in one night not sure what to expect. I was pleasantly surprised! Its a unique upscale place in Mountainside, which is not known for a sizzling night life. There's a long bar, some high tables to the left as you walk in near the bar area, regular tables for dinner, and an area with cushion seating near the fireplace all the way in the back. The menu is varied - filet mignot, scallops, lobster rolls, corned beef sandwich, the requisite burger, etc. They have a larger than expected craft beer menu, including such choices as Troegs the Mad Elf lol Each time I've been there, the service has been excellent, the food has been very good (if a tad pricey), and the drinks have been generous pours. My date had been talking about this spot for a while so we went recently with a few friends. I got a few glasses of Riesling, which were awesome. For my meal, I got the Publick Burger with caramelized red onion, apple wood smoked bacon, cheddar cheese, hand cut fries. Instead of fries, I got the mashed potatoes, which were amazing. Very buttery and rich. I ordered the burger medium rare and it was delicious. My date got the Shepherd's Pie (braised lamb, vegetables, garlic potato pureé), which was really good. It was very filling. He ended up bringing home half of it and we had it with our breakfast, which was still good in the morning. The place has dark mood lighting so it's good to take someone on a date. It's clean and has a huge fireplace in the back. Though, the clientele aren't dressed up to the nines so don't feel obligated to look good. Our waitress seemed friendly enough. I do note at one point, I did say, "Where's my burger?!" because hunger was beginning to seep in, which is a sign that I may have waited 5-10 mins longer than I'd like. At least I only said it once. Prices are a little high for this spot in my opinion. I could get just as good a burger elsewhere for a little cheaper in my opinion. Though, huge thank you to my date for treating me. This place does NOT take reservations and my date said sometimes it can be an hour wait, which I dislike. Thankfully the night we went, it was pretty quiet in there so we got a table asap. But seriously, just take reservations! Makes it easier on everyone rather than drive out here then have to wait forever to eat. read more

I really wanted to like this place since I always pass by it and it always seems lively. I'll give the benefit of the doubt that maybe the day I went, may have been a bad day? To start, the prices are pretty high for how underwhelming the food is. For food, I ordered the grilled octopus appetizer, New York Strip steak cooked medium rare, and grilled scallops and it pains me to say I was not impressed. The steak was bland and burnt to a crisp on the outside and the rest of the components seemed lazy and underwhelming to me, a few slivered tomatoes and cubes of croutons was far too bland for the price. Grilled scallops were okay but the sauce that layer under it was corn in a cream sauce that tasted like canned corn. The octopus appetizer had a similar corn component under it. Last, the watermelon mezcal cocktail drink, was undrinkable. Overall spent close to $200 and I was extremely disappointed and underwhelmed with it all. There was a complete lack of flavor. Again, I hate to give such a negative review but it was memorable for me and not in a good way. Again, I'll give them the benefit of the doubt that it may have been a bad day, but I don't think I would try it again. My bf brought me here for my birthday and it was a nice dinner. Very cozy restaurant with regulars, it has a solid menu. We started with truffled cavatelli & cheese and the slow braised pork belly. GET THE PORK BELLY! I had teh scallops risotto as recommended by many yelpers, and it was amazing! My bf had the ribeye which he said was cooked very nicely but not really amazing. We had truffled fries and garlic kale on the side. they were both ok. I wish they did kale chips instead of garlic kale. fries were a bit soggy. I ended with tea since it said "Twinnings Tea" but they only have the flavored ones left. Disappointed since I like twinnings earl grey :( nice ambience. family friendly. there is an area in front of the fireplace and looked very cozy and pretty with benches. it does get busy and they don't take reservation so get there early! read more

Very misleading entrees. On a 6" plate!!? Lamb pasta had appetizer portion. Literally 10 pieces of pasta and very little lamb. Rabbit cacciatore wasn't. Shrimp bisque lukewarm. The drinks didn't taste good, too strong or overpowering. I had the scallops which at the time I thought was good until I came home at night from having dinner. I got terribly sick, vomiting, face with a rash and stomach with a rash. Found out that this was an allergic reaction due to the scallops not being fresh. I never had this problem with seafood at all. The scallops weren't fresh, it caused an allergic reaction on me. Later on that month I had scallops from elsewhere and I was perfectly fine. This was my first trip to Publick House. We were so excited to give this place a try and our expectations fell flat. The only reason I recommend going here is for the ambience. Super relaxed, chic, trendy vibe with TV's at the bar. Great setting for a birthday or an anniversary dinner. The food was pretty solid. I had the fish and chips and my wife the panzzz..(don't remember the name) salad. Both were cooked and plated very well. However the service could use just a little work. It took multiple attempts to find my waiter. I hate having to be that guy that has to raise his hand to get someone's attention in a restaurant. Lastly, in my experience working in restaurants (I was an actor in grad school, I worked in more than a few restaurants in NYC) common practice when you know it's a guests birthday you serve them a complimentary dessert. That was not the case for Publick House. Sure enough when the check came they had charged us for the dessert. It's not a huge red flag just felt super odd to me and bad manners. All in all I would give this place a 7/10 and would come back for drinks sometime. read more

So close to my house...so unfrequently visited. Here's why. The decor and the bar/fireplace area are great - feels cozy and like you're in an old timey inn from the colonial era. So far, so good. But the food was just not wonderful, and prices were high for what it was. At a family dinner, my sister in law, who is vegetarian, ordered her pasta without meat...and they hedged, saying that the sauce was made with meat. They offered a primavera as a substitution, which she accepted. When it came back, it looked (and tasted) like frozen vegetables, canned marinara sauce (very tinny with no real flavor), and pasta. On a "neighborhood moms night out" I ordered an appetizer that was more edible, but light on flavor and finesse. I reserve the right to increase the star rating after trying it again, but haven't made my way back to Publick House. (P.S. We can walk there.) read more

I've been sitting on this review for a while because I totally thought I had written it already. My bad! This is from a meal we had back in March, so take from it what you will. I wanted to take The Man out somewhere nice for his birthday. He's Irish and digs pubs, so I thought Publick House would be a good choice being so close to home. We went in on a Tuesday night with no reservation. The restaurant was full, but not packed so they were able to seat us right away. I noticed immediately that it was really dark. A bit darker than I like, even for romantic meals. We were seated at a table along the wall. The tables were really close together, so it was a tight squeeze for my chubby man. They had quite a large variety of beers on tap, and I let the birthday boy have whatever he wanted (something I couldn't pronounce, let alone spell) while I stuck to water. Our server brought our drinks over after a few minutes and took our dinner order. He ordered a caesar salad and the Publick burger while I opted for the house salad and an order of fish & chips. We chit-chatted a bit with the couple next to us while we waited for our food. Since it was so busy that night, we figured we'd have to wait a long time, but it was really only a few minutes for our salads and maybe another 10ish minutes for our entrees. Our server checked in with us a few times to refresh our drinks, but was very unobtrusive. The salads were good. I mean, they're standard salads. Not easy to mess up, but also not easy to elevate into something spectacular. The Man thoroughly enjoyed his burger. The carmelized onions gave just the right amount of sweetness, playing off the smokiness of the bacon and the saltiness of the cheese. The roll held up to such a hearty burger, and it was a nice touch to bring it out on a wooden board. My fish & chips were quite lovely as well. The batter was crisp and golden while the fish was moist and succulent. My only complaint would be that the fish didn't taste seasoned. Nothing a little malt vinegar couldn't fix, thankfully, but I had expected better from them. We didn't bother sticking around for dessert, but it was no fault of the restaurant (we're TV junkies, what can I say). Overall, we had a positive experience at Publick House. Definitely above average service and food, but it didn't quite wow me. We'll be back for sure, though! read more

We have been there several times and have enjoyed it. The staff are consistently professional, welcoming and attentive. I sat at the bar last night and had roast oysters (really enjoyable, though oddly served on top of small non-edible stones of some kind) and a burger with fries. The fries were overcooked. I should have sent them back but I was too hungry. Sorry to report the burger was disappointing. $22 for what to me seemed quite like a Costco burger: unnatural uniform pre-formed edge to the patty and remarkably tasteless. I've liked this place and would love for them to continue to succeed and deliver excellent food but this was a disappointment. I am concerned they are cutting corners which will not serve them well in the long term. I'm curious if there has been a change in ownership? read more
