If I could give 0 stars I would. Do not waste your time or money! I had my things in storage for 6 months and when I returned there was mold on some items and water stains on others. The insurance doesn't cover damage due to elements so another waste of money. They need to have climate controlled units like they claim to offer. *Update The day after posting this review I was contacted several times. I appreciate the attempts at customer service. Honestly though nothing will take away the fact that they advertise climate controlled units and that's not the truth. The more boxes I open that were in this unit the more moldy items I find. Some custom items which also held sentimental value and are irreplaceable. It's hurtful and disrespectful that I would be asked to take down my review multiple times a day when this issue is so fresh and has not been settled. read more

First of all let me say that Carmelita is an asset to the company. She has always been very professional and helpful, responsive, friendly. Has assisted me many times over the phone and recently in person. What I am less than happy about is the non promotional monthly fee of $105 that is costly for a tiny 5 x 10 basement level unit. And recently I fell behind on my payments due to job loss and then Covid 19. I called the home office when I was able to pay and asked if they could help me out by reducing the extra $100 in late fees and lein after missing two payments. Come to find out they had scheduled an auction for my belongings which seems extreme and tone deaf after missing only 2 payments. I was offered a credit of one late fee for 21.00, which was zeroed out by the new lock I had to buy after they cut my old lock off to sell my property. The way companies do business, their policies, professonalism, consideration for their customers as human beings reflects the level of the integrity of the people who operate the company. I ask you to consider how would you would feel if you lost your job and got sick and then corporate America sells your belongings. Put yourself in your customers shoes for a moment thats what I'm suggesting. read more

This Silver Spring locations is a short drive from another Silver Spring location and the unit was half the price! Via phone the attendant reviewed several options for me for a short-term rental. After a short conversation she booked me. I got a text confirmation with the address then shortly after I received a phone call from the manager to welcome me. A few hours later Lawrence met me upon arrival and processed my storage rental very efficiently and easy. For something like a last minute short-term move and booking with a lot of moving parts, this could have been a nightmare, but instead Lawrence helped ease the pain and Public Storage provided enough options. My rate was raised around 5 months after opening. I would have given 5 stars for the storage experience and the excellent manager, but I feel the rate increase is a predatory practice. There was no disclaimer or warning that the rate would increase within the first year of opening the unit (the industry norm is to raise prices after a full year of rent). read more

I rented a storage space from Public Storage in July 2019. Initially, the service was decent. I paid my monthly fee and signed up for automatic withdrawals from my checking account. About 6 weeks into my contract, Public Storage increased my monthly fee. They also began charging me late fees and harassing me about missed monthly payments -- despite the fact that they had full access to my account. On one particular occasion, Carlotta (a representative) advised me to physically go into Public Storage to have them manually update my payment information (which had never changed). I did so, only to have Public Storage call me again and again in subsequent months because they could not figure out how to execute the automatic withdrawal. To make matters worse, the local office insisted that only the national office could rectify the situation. This was a nightmare because I incurred lots of headaches and received unnecessary harassing phone calls about "missed" or "late" payments. I eventually opted to move my belongings out of their space. Steer clear of Public Storage. They are disorganized, unprofessional, and deceptive (with regard to fees). read more

"Run don't walk away" from Public Storage! So many better storage options out there (i.e. ABT U-Pack Moving--cheaper, pick up & drop off @ ur door, NO HASSLE, amazingly polite!). PS includes poor mgmt, over priced units and lots of $$extras make it a bad choice! No such thing as "$1 for First Month" since you must pay first-time Administration Fee $24 & Not Optional Monthly Insurance: $11 (lowest available for paper files that can't be replaced! How does that work PS?) First, 5x10 unit: $110 monthly, (then 4 doors down) 2nd 5x10 unit: $125 monthly rented the next day, same unit! Everything about this company spells screw the consumer & make them enjoy it while you taking $$---never again! read more

One day I showed up at my unit, there was another blue lock on my unit to prevent me from accessing my unit, apparently due to unpaid rent. It was impossible in my case, since I have been on auto payment right from the beginning. Fortunately, Durell, a property manager was still around at the time to remove the lock for me. Another day I showed up with my movers at 8:30am, to my surprise, my access code to open the gate stopped working. The office wasn't open at the time; I had to beg another tenant inside of the gate to open the gate for me and my movers. I finally called the headquarters, who told me that the access code I had been using for months was incorrect. It turned out that the property managers mixed up my unit number before I moved in and had to redo the contract to "transfer" me to another unit on paper, but failed to inform me about my new access code. (They did call me about the mix up a week prior. Nevertheless, their failure to inform me about my new access code caused me to be locked out outside of the gate on a raining day, with my movers in tow.) Before I signed the contract, they gave me the impression that I must buy their $20 lock in order to rent a unit. I only found out after I paid for the lock that the $20 lock was optional and I could bring my own lock. No return and no refund on the lock. The lock was mine to keep. Before I signed the contract, they told me that last month's rent will be prorated and I can move out whenever I want. After I moved out, they told me that my last month's rent is prorated ONLY if I move out before the 15th of each month. If I move out after the 15th, I still pay for the entire month. On the day of contract signing, they made me buy their $11/month renter's insurance unless I could prove that my own insurance will cover my properties inside my storage unit. "You can cancel our insurance any time if you bring proof of insurance" they said. It turned out that my renter's insurance does cover what's inside my storage unit. I came by two days later to cancel Public Storage's insurance. They responded, "Sorry, you have already paid for the entire month. No refund. No prorate for this month, but we will remove your insurance next month." They will upsell you on the insurance, locks, mattress covers, packaging materials. They will make it sound like the insurance and the locks are mandatory. Watch out for their upsell tactics and surprises!!! Oh yeah, also watch out for the $25 move-in fee! Otherwise, the units are mostly decent and clean. read more

I can't tell whether it's this public storage or all public storages but my experience was awful. There was a fire at the public storage two nights before I had to move my stuff out which caused a power outage. I wasn't notified so when I show much with the U-Haul I rented and with movers I wasn't able to get any of my stuff. No they did not inform me of the power outage and no they would not reimburse me of the costs of the uhaul or movers. To make matter worse, I was told I could keep my stuff in storage without a cost to me until power was returned. Well, when I returned a week later. They cut off my lock and put their own lock on for not paying for the week extra I was there. -_- An hour later someone was able to get the lock off and I was able to move. But between the cost of renting a U-Haul twice, finding help to move because I couldn't afford to pay movers for a second time (I'm a recent graduate with no family support), sleeping on the floor for a week, and having to go back and forth "customer service" and not getting anything out of it except, "you can keep your stuff here for another three months for free" it wasn't worth renting from them. I don't understand why the insurance I had bought through them wouldn't cover the cost of this incident or why the Regional Manager couldn't do anything either (if I find his name I'll post it on here). Get a pod or rent anywhere else but don't rent from this Public Storage unless you want to waste time and money if something goes wrong. read more

While advertisement says $1 for the first month, be prepared to pay "additional fees" such as security lock fee, insurance, etc. which result in paying more than $1 for first month. So there are things in life that are supposed to be painful, like getting a root canal or cleaning up after your basement floods or moving, and then there are things that you hope will be painless but rarely are.....like renting at a storage facility. I recently rented a storage space at Hillwood and was so happily surprised at how helpful Durell was and at how easy the process was that I had to write a review and call him out. It's a simple thing but when you having to find a place for you stuff, it is rarely because life is going exactly as you expected, and having a public storage employee treat you with such professionalism and kindness goes a long way towards brightening your day. From the time we entered until the time of departure he was very attentive and knowledgeable of our needs and you all are very fortunate to have someone like him representing your company.
