Termite infestation

Termite infestation. Went to the storage unit this last Saturday only to discover my boxes near the door were completely infested with TERMITES. Called the office but the manager was not on duty that day. Didn't want to leave my stuff in there one minute longer so I cleared everything out. I finally talked to the manager and I asked that the least they could do was waive that month that I've already paid for since a termite infestation is unacceptable and a lot of my property had been irreparable damaged. He claimed there was no evidence of termites and basically accused me of fabricating a story. I've attached some photos of the type of damage you can expect if you rent a storage facility here.

I have three storage units with Public Storage and my experience has been as acceptable as it can be given this industries track record. Today, however, I arrived to access my new unit, and the only light bulb for this 12 x 20 storage unit is missing. Ok no big deal. It happens. I walk to the office and let them know that I can't put a new bulb in (which I don't mind paying for even though I shouldn't have to) because it's 10 feet up and I don't have a ladder with me. The guy tells me next time you're here with a bulb you can borrow ours. There's literally 3 or 4 things you guys need to do and that's provide access to the building, charge me for a lock that I already have, and provide an empty storage space that I can see inside of. You guys have no problem steadily increasing the rate month after month, or charging for a lock, or for mandating insurance, at least put the damn bulb in.

This location charged me $25 for a lock that I don't need. You can either use your own cylinder lock or buy one from them no exceptions.

I've suffered a traumatic brain injury therefore things such as payment, especially when I've had to cancel credit cards escape me reoccurring payments. They are always so kind to call me and remind me. The other day, my truck was broken into all of my cards were stolen, and Andre went way his way to call me and ask if there was could do to help. Let me know how many days I had before a late charge was going to be incurred. Even followed up later in the day at the time that I requested and called me to assist me in filling out the paperwork that I was able to pay my storage with. He sent me paperwork to where I could put it through my bank account because I no longer had access to any credit cards or my bank card and I'm currently in Mexico when this happened. Without that I would've had late fees. always so personable and so helpful when I forget they'll send follow up emails and they'll call and remind me. As a person with ADA issues, I am ever so grateful when I can find a business that has the courtesy and the understanding that San Diego self has shown me over the last two years. As for the facility, it's clean knee which is definitely helpful during the summer when I'm moving things in and out. Thank you, Andre and thank you San Diego self Storage. You definitely deserve five star rating!

Before I explain why I do NOT recommend this storage facility, let me unequivocally state that the…read moreemployees are super nice and helpful. When you read the reviews, this becomes a self evident truth. Sadly, this is not enough when safety and security of your valuables is paramount. This facility has water intrusion issues caused by off-site water drainage problems. On or about the May 2025 Memorial Day weekend, SecureSpace Self Storage experienced a massive water intrusion incident. Literally dozens of units on the first and second floors were partially or completely flooded. Boxes, furniture and anything stored in the units was variously soaked and damaged. I personally lost a very old and sentimental CD collection of stored in multiple cardboard boxes on laid on the concrete floor. It appears that drainage from up grade (I.e., off-site) entered the storage facility somewhere on the second floor via outside wall. From various accounts it seems that periodic flooding is an issue for the County of San Diego in this area. This storage facility is located towards the bottom of a fairly steep Storm water runoff and drainage system. It is unclear whether the intrusion was a poor a design issue or a maintenance problem. SecureSpace emphatically claims it is not their fault. This is probably true but they still own and profit from renting hundreds of high end, air conditioned units. Drainage mitigation is part of a good site civil design plan and typically required by San Diego County authorities (i.e., permitting process.) Clearly, SOMETHING failed and many of us SecureSpace tenants were told to file insurance claims. If you don't already know, insurance adjusters rarely make you whole even with receipts, appraisals, etc. Bottom line, AVOID the first floor of this facility at a minimum. Be aware that poor design and/or maintenance may jeopardize your valuables. It's really unfortunate because this place is NOT cheap nor is it in a bad neighborhood. However, there appears to be site civil design and/or storm water mitigation issues that weren't properly planned or later resolved. Do your own due diligence and ask yourself if the risk is worth the price. I was planning on storing a lifetime of valuables for long-term safekeeping while on a foreign deployment. I will take my business elsewhere because I don't need this kind of headache or perpetual worry.

All of the people that work there are so pleasant so helpful. Shoot, even the bathroom is amazing at the facility along with their little candies that they have available for you I've suffered a traumatic brain injury in the past so businesses that can help me remember things or at least be kind when I have forgotten mean a lot to me. This made it impossible for me to pay my storage bill when it came due. I had been on auto pay, but once the cards were killed, that was no longer relevant. Andre went way out of his way to call and remind me that the bill was due, he even let me know how many days I had to work with before a late charge would be assessed once I realize that I wasn't going to be able to use my bank card in time he immediately sent me a form which was super easy to fill out online, allowing my bank account to be linked to my auto pay, and the funds were immediately available so that my items in storage were safe and sound Andre followed up with me to make sure that I had it done if I needed any help he was there for me and just overall compassionate and understanding! This company and storage facility is terrible. Do not store your belongings here. I had a break-in…read moreat my storage unit, and the company was awful in responding and helping with the situation. This response was led by the district manager, Frankie, and the vice president, Dana, in late October 2025. It took two months to speak to either of them upon request, and the issue had to be escalated. There's email documentation of my requests to speak with them from Ron and Aza, both of whom work at the facility. I also have video footage from when I first witnessed the break-in. One of the employees was so appalled that he offered to help me pick up the pieces while on the job. Ultimately, I wanted to know what the company would do about the situation, as I did not feel comfortable making payments after the break-in. I expressed the damage caused and the effects of poor management. This company is a poor representation of customer service and care. Legal action is pending because I've visited their facility multiple times and seen the gate open after hours, compromising security. They have terrible surveillance and none in the hallways of the storage units. It's very poorly run and managed. They seemed to care little about the break-in. My experience with Frankie was disappointing; she was insincere about my situation and did nothing to resolve my needs. The same applied to Dana, who sided with Frankie after filing a complaint and disregarded my concerns entirely. I regret storing my belongings here and plan to leave as soon as possible. My advice is to avoid this company. Dana did nothing but support Frankie during our call after I took more time out of my day to explain the discrepancy. She claimed to be seeking a resolution but offered absolutely nothing. The only thing she did was side with her employee, which is unfortunate. This has been the worst display of customer service I have ever witnessed. She had nothing to offer for a resolution. This matter was escalated multiple times, and I filed a complaint against Frankie for her poor display of customer service and utter insincerity in the way she spoke to me. Now my complaint extends to both Frankie and Dana for their poor customer service and care. This company ought to be ashamed of itself. Dana actually said, "you can move out if you want." Such a terrible display of customer service. Stay away from this place.

I trusted this facility with my belongings. Huge mistake. Not long after that manager was fired, my unit was broken into. I had a Master Lock and a second lock purchased from CubeSmart itself. Neither was cut or damaged--whoever got into my unit either had a key or access. It was clearly an inside job or serious negligence. What's worse? I called the facility and corporate office multiple times. Left voicemails. Not one call back. Not even an apology. I was told they would review security footage--still nothing. No follow-up. No explanation. Nothing but silence. To make matters worse, they still charged me rent after my unit was broken into. No grace period. No concern. Just another charge on my account like nothing happened. The insurance didn't even cover all of what I lost. This place is a joke. They charge premium prices like it's some high-security location, but it's nothing but a ripoff. No security. No customer service. No accountability. Save yourself the loss, the frustration, and the disrespect. CubeSmart La Jolla is the WORST storage experience I've ever had!
