I feel very lucky to have chosen Extra Space Storage (ESS) in Herndon because the customer service is OUTSTANDING. On the day I went in to sign my contract, I actually ended up standing in there just chatting with the staff for a while after contract signing was finished. They are all very personable and knowledgeable. I had all of my questions answered and felt very confident that if i had any questions or concerns at anytime, someone would be available to answer them. I think these days, good customer service is hard to come by, and ESS in Herndon deserves a ton of praise. In regards to the facility itself, I don't have anything to really compare it to. I have the 5x10 unit, which perfectly fits the contents of my DC apartment. It is easy for me to just swing my the unit to add or remove items at any time, and moving everything into the unit was easy as well. Being a young woman, I also feel very safe coming and going to the facility at any time of day, which I also think is a very important thing.

Allan answered any questions I had, as well as made sure I was aware of all the loading decks, how to get in, how to use the locks, etc. By the end of our tour I was extremely confident to sign a lease and felt safe with the property/where my stuff was being stored. Pricing options were great and Allan was very transparent on working with me if needed come renewal time when rates will eventually go up. I…read morehave nothing but good things to say :) Also for being a storage facility, I thought it was kept pretty clean and in pretty good condition. Units are in good shape, well lit, easy to access... I did see that there were a lot of comments about the facilities, but honestly, they seem comparable to most similar storage facilities in the area. Just standard units with various sizes, indoor/outdoor/temp controlled options and garage doors style openings. More importantly, the temp controlled area doors were always closed in my experience, which is reassuring, because you pay a higher rate for that. During business hours (when staff were onsite), I would occasionally see the gates were left open, but never doors. I don't know if that was for staff to have easier access, but I never experienced that after hours. I would also say that I felt the site Manager (or corporate?), were very prompt in communication. There was a sprinkler that had gone off somewhat near my unit and I received prompt notification about the incident and to come in to assess any damage to my things (I pay for insurance each month). The actual sprinkler was not in my row of units or on the same end of the rows, but I appreciate being notified so that it wasn't a surprise if I came in and there were issues. I give the overall experience 4 stars because it did become very pricey and it seems the only way to avoid these price hikes is to just move your stuff to a different storage facility (and who needs the hassle?). I had stored my stuff here for 4 years in a 10x10 indoor, temp controlled unit. I will be transparent about my pricing experience: Jan 2020: $290 Jan 2021: $296 July 2021: $345 April 2022: $390 August 2023: $393 May 2024: $454 The May 2024 jump was pretty larger and more than I was willing to continue to pay and I did contact the business directly to work out a deal for a few months until I ultimately down-sized enough that I didn't need it (It was very easy to cancel, no fuss). I just want to point out that it was never double and I was always notified in advance off the next month rate increase. I don't agree how the corporate-levels of these facilities operate. It does drive up prices unnecessarily, randomly and by jumps that are hard to manage. I do think there are scam-esque qualities, but that is an economic policy argument and note a review :) So suffice it to say that overall, storage is pricey, but this was a very nice facility and experience overall.

There are so many things to hate about this company and this location that I don't know where to…read morestart. But here goes: 1) They will start your rent out low and then jack It up every few months. I rented a 10X30 unit for a little over $500 and 18 months later it is nearly $800. They give virtually no advance notice of the increase, perhaps 1-2 weeks, so you have little time to make a change. 2) People actually LIVE in the facility, as in, they use it as a residence. This is creepy AF and also against the law but the company apparently does not care. 3). They have a problem with security, as in the main gate to the facility is stuck in the "up position" literally for weeks, so anyone can get inside the gate. Then the door to the units can often be opened without an access code or open automatically when you approach the door. 4) Oftentimes 2-3 of the 4 access doors do not work at all 5) The bathrooms are often disgusting, locked or lacking toilet paper. Trash in the bathroom sits on the floors for days on end. 6) There is a serious rodent problem which has caused damage to some of my belongings, mainly books. 7) While the guys who work at the unit are generally professional and nice people, trying to engage with anyone above them is literally impossible. I WOILD RECOMMEND, IN THE STRONGEST POSSIBLE TERMS, THAT YOU ENGAGE A DIFFERENT COMPANY. This company is possibly the worse I have ever engaged with. Ever.

My project was immediately responded to and they were able to help me move two weeks later on their soonest available date. The three movers, Pat, Renaldo, and Kevin were incredible. Communication leading up to the move and theday of was great. They were able to move all my large furniture within 2 hours. Everything was wrapped carefully and efficiently. They were kind and thoughtful, helping me make adjustments to the furniture layout once we got to the destination. Their positivity through one of the hardest situations I've ever gone through was much-needed and made me feel confident in entering this next chapter. I even had a last minute change to the destination (originally everything was going into storage but I ended up finding an apartment just in time), and the professionalism and patience from the entire Bookstore team through this change was excellent. Pricing was reasonable yet again and came out to about $500 (excluding tip) for the truck fee and moving of 16 large items. Thank you Bookstore Movers for helping me when I needed it most!

We had a dedicated elevator, yet workers often brought items down only one or two at a time. I also saw team members on their phones or standing around in rooms and hallways instead of actively moving things. These delays added up quickly. The crew also misplaced parts of our bed frame, and the pieces had to be found before it could be reassembled. That alone added nearly an hour to the move. Because the move took much longer than expected, the final cost was significantly higher than the estimate we received. We were also charged based on an arrival time that was recorded as ten minutes earlier than when the crew actually arrived. The team was courteous, but given the inefficiency, added time, and higher final price, we would not use Bookstore Movers again. This is unfortunate, because we had been happy with them in previous moves.
