I just moved into a clean 10x10 for the month and happy to pay a buck. LOL The facility is super clean and quiet. The local's that I met in the morning are nice people and eager to help the new guy to navigate. Manager's Robert and Raffi are very professional and helpful. I spent hours moving stuff in and the whole time felt good vibrations from the place and the staff. I recommend this storage facility to everyone that likes a well supervised, secure and clean warehouse. I always feel a bit safer around big strong guys working behind the counter. Moving is always a depressing event but this facility cheered me up. read more

Thinking about renting a storage space. I never rent a space before, so I came into the fair oaks location close to my house for some information over the weekend. I didn't know what to expect, but I was very pleased with my overall experience here. The place was clean and well kept. Daniel was not only friendly, but very helpful and knowledgeable about the company. He answered all my question and showed me around the different spaces and explained a lot of situation doing his best to meet my needs. I'm very pleased with his services. Our unit was broken into. The thief unscrewed the lock so it was a clean break in. They took their time rummaging as each boxes were tampered with--here were at least 45. We suspect another individual who also rents here and made notice of what we stored as all the recent stuff are gone including a 5x5 piece of furniture, framed arts. Be very careful with sharing the elevator with anyone, cover the things you're storing so nobody can see them. read more

Avoid avoid avoid! Unsafe location and unresponsive staff. I repeatedly complained about transients using the unit next to mine as a daytime clubhouse, laying with feet out of the unit blocking the hallways, and leaving the door cracked so friends could come in. I was storing retail merchandise there and felt unsafe when I had to go pick up,or drop off and there were people hanging out there, not to mention my space eventually stank of really old socks. The last straw, one night after 8 I had a truckload of merch to drop off and I found about 4 people with shopping carts camped out by the door, and the door cracked open. I actually brought a knife in with me, and when I found people laying in the hallways I just left and had to cram everything into my house instead. I complained repeatedly and was told there are security cameras, but clearly not in the area I was in as often I would find piles of trash or abandoned belongings in the hallway for like 3 days and no one who works there apparently saw it, so they are not walking the halls or watching video. A call to the district manager was not returned for over a week, after which I had packed up my merch and moved on. Unsafe! And one more annoying thing, the employees park their cars right in front of the doorway to the building where my unit was, so I could never back right up to the door to load and unload. No good storage options in this area, but avoid this one if you want to feel safe and stink-free. read more

The workers are very friendly and helpful if you need it. Prices are not bad at all, and they make you use a very high quality lock to ensure that your stuff doesnt get stolen. Looking for storage? Want a clean, well-maintained, and safe unit to put your stuff? Want good customer service and fair billing practices? If you do...DO NOT COME HERE! Allow me to explain. I have been a public storage customer for years. I previously rented a unit in Ventura County with this same company and was satisfied. Not so here at 511 Fair Oaks (old Bekins Bldg.) There are several areas that are of potential interest in renting a storage unit: cost, location, cleanliness, customer service, and of course safety (one we may take for granted in this area of Pasadena). Unfortunately, this Public Storage leaves something to be desired in most of these categories. As far as cost is concerned they do have competitive prices. I'm checking online right now and they are right their with the pack. Advertised prices, no complaint there. However, be careful because they will increase fees often. I have seen late fees increase since I have been here from $10 to $25. Perhaps this is a plan to get the "undesirables" out? They have had a problem with homeless renting units and living in them, partying in them, etc. My rent has also been increased by about 25% since I moved in 2 1/2 years ago. The location is ok, close to the 210. However, before you reserve a unit note that they have 2 buildings and one is some distance from the other so if you get a unit in that back building you have to walk back and forth to get carts which can be a real pain (moving multiple loads on a hot day for instance). Also, you have to give them you're Driver's License to use a cart and since they often have only one person at the desk if you come back with the cart and they are not there (on break, lunch, giving someone a tour) you have to wait for them to come back. I once had to wait nearly an hour to get my license back because of this setup. When I first moved my stuff in the place looked really well-maintained and clean. However, people aren't joking when they talk about people living in these units. There was one particular fellow who used to set up a table and chair outside of his unit on Sundays (close to mine), play the radio, enjoy a couple of cocktails, and...oops...relieve himself in the maze of corridors that cut across the place. There's other colorful characters often about as well. Dogs too. The glass security doors are often taken off the track since they're is no way to keep them open otherwise (think of moving stuff and having to enter your code every time you go in) Also, although I cannot say that I have seen rats there was a unit close to mine that really stank bad like a dead animal. Once, I had to really get on management to fix the wall of my unit since someone had tried to pry the aluminum panels open. Another time someone threw something that looked like a can of brown paint around in the corridor as well. It was never cleaned, just left to dry. In addition, They have an old-fashioned lift elevator, the kind with the rolling door, so you have to send your stuff up unattended and meet it when it gets there. The problem with this is the door stops are always broken, so you have to prop them up yourself. Also, the elevator won't work if someone leaves the door open so you tend to run up and down stairs more than you would need to if they upgraded this antique. So well-maintained this place is not. Neither can I say it is safe since I don't let my wife go without me. Now what about customer service? Here's an example, I was looking at my account online a couple of weeks ago and notice I owed double my usual rent. I called for info. Customer service said they could not help me, that I had to talk to the district manager, George Vasquez. Days go by, no call. Then I got a call from Robert saying they had not received my monthly payment. I told him I needed to know what the nearly $300 bill was for. He said I would have to talk to George. I asked if they had received the mailed check (yes it included late fee) and I was told my check would not be accepted. What is going on here? Talk to George he sympathetically says. Now get this, it is January 31st, 5PM. District Manager George calls me. He tells me there was a chargeback on my account in November of last year. Yep. November. (And you are telling me now?) I ask him if they have my January payment. He said yes but they will not accept it since it's a check and with the chargeback they cannot accept checks from me. I tell him the chargeback is some kind of error. I need time to look into it. And since they had not informed me in a timely manner how could they not accept my check? He evades the question and in a belligerent tone says "you just have to pay now sir or your unit is going to auction". Very disorganized and sloppy way to do business. Definitely not a way to treat a customer. Security issues, maintenance issues, unfair billing practices...I strongly recommend you do not bring your business here. read more

Absolutely bad place. They not only have a facility that leaks water on your stuff, but they also lie. I had rented a space and it got water damaged, by a leak in their pipes. They moved me to another space and told me they would give me the same rate, because the first space ( same size) I had was cheaper by half. I talked to both the manager and the district manager, Anthony Borgia, who told me on several different occassions they would fix the overcharging, because I immediately starting receiving bills for the higher rate. He said whatever he had to to calm me down, promised to fix the overcharging, promised my wife to send a letter confirming this in writing, and the letter never came and it is still a mess. They don't care about your furniture and they don't care about making good on the contract. This facility is to be avoided at any cost. terrible place read more

This is the worst public storage facility--mainly due to the lack of security to both your belongings and to your person. But also for the poor customer service. Complaints go ignored even though the business advertises 100% customer satisfaction. Furthermore, be prepared to be harassed by the homeless people out front (which forces you to lock and unlock your vehicle every trip you make moving stuff) or the people living inside (dodging roller bladers or walking past people having sex). These aren't hotel rooms. These units are essentially open roof covered with only chain link fence, so don't stash any valuables--especially in plain view of someone who might be crawling atop the units looking for stuff they can sell. I could go on and on in great detail. This is no exaggeration. Renter beware. Bottom line: Brutal experience. I would recommend ANY other storage facility besides this location. You could only do worse if you stored your stuff in a well-lit open field. read more

At face value, self-storage is an easy business. In exchange for money, you provide customers with 1. A space to store their things, 2. A reasonably easy yay to get to that space, and 3. Some reassurance that other people can't get your stuff. The Public Storage at 511 S Fair Oaks is zero for three. *A space to store things* We booked a 10x10 air-conditioned space on the Public Storage website. $200 a month, first month for $120 - easy enough. The day before our reservation, an employee called us to confirm that we were planning to move in. Odd, but sure! On the day of, we show up with a car full of things and the manager explains that, as it turns out, there is no space for us - the computer must be wrong. They do have a 10x11, but the extra foot makes it a completely different unit, she says, and we'll have to pay $270/month. Or we could go elsewhere. After an hour of protests and many "calls to her manager", she agrees to let us move in for $200, but the first-month discount has vanished. *A reasonable way to get to your space - part 1* Day 2. As we are moving our things in, the only elevator breaks with us inside. The door opens on a random floor, with a 2 inch vertical gap between the elevator and the floor. We manage to drag our things out and call the front desk - they can call maintenance, but they have no idea of when it will be repaired. We explain that we are stranded in the wrong floor with a 500-lb cart - could we perhaps use the service elevator? Nope, they tell us to drag our things up and down the stairs. After an hour of polite disbelief and many "calls to their manager", they agree to let us store our things in an empty locker on the floor, but they warn us that we will have to get them out "as soon as the elevator is repaired". Also, they charge us $20 for a lock. Update: the next day, I get a threatening call from Public Storage while at work. The elevator has just been repaired, and I had better take the day off work and empty the unit before 6 p.m. or I will be charged for the full month. That afternoon, the elevator breaks again. *A reasonable way to get to your space - part 2* There are two ways to get to our unit - the elevator and the stairs. The elevator and the stairs are behind different electronic door locks. I ask the front desk twice whether our code will unlock both the doors, since the elevator is broken. Of course, they say as they leave for the day. Shortly after, we find out that, indeed, our code does not open the door lock for the stairs. And the elevator is broken. We are locked out. The district manager won't pick up the phone. The corporate call center tells us they will get in touch with the district manager, who will get back to us "within 15 minutes". That was yesterday, and we haven't heard back yet - but maybe soon! Update: the front desk explains that they would never give us access to the door, because "it is a security risk". So (i) they lied to us on Day 2, and (ii) customers with units on the first floor can get to our unit when the elevator is broken, but we cannot. The district manager never returned our calls and voicemails. *Security so others won't steal your stuff* Maybe the fact that nobody can get into the building because the elevator is broken is not such a bad thing, after all. The $20 lock that Public Storage will happily sell you connects to a L-shaped plate held to the wall by two screws. The screw heads are exposed in the hallway, and there is no retaining bolt on the inside. So anyone is a screwdriver away from your things. Our unit, and several more units on our floor, have fingerprint dust around the lock area - it looks like theft is a very common occurrence. You meet interesting people in the parking lot around closing time. We met a couple whose unit had just been broken into - they told us that the Public Storage employees were unsurprised and did not care in the least. Another woman retold us how she had her units burglarized three times. The front desk person tells us that "theft happens everywhere" and that they could install a better plate if we really want - but they don't know when, and we'd have to leave them a key. Maybe not. In summary: If you like being bait-and-switched, getting locked out of your unit, and being two screws away from losing your stuff, then Public Storage is great! If not, do not make the mistake we did - go anywhere else but here. read more

I have never rented a storage unit so I can't say this place was better or worse than other units, but I was very pleased with my overall experience here. The staff were nothing but kind, friendly, and informative. The units and building are clean and we'll kept. When I checked in, Jonathan B. helped me. He was super helpful and asked me about the stuff I was going to put into the unit to ensure I got the right size. He walked me through the security and showed me where the free dollies were located for when I moved my stuff in. Overall, I'm glad I went with public storage. Sometimes it's better to go with the larger brand because you get what you pay for. read more

This particular location has the best customer service of any storage facilities I have used. Robert was extremely helpful to me and my moving crew upon arrival and every time I come back by he greets me with a friendly hello. He even asked once if he could help me with my items. The building is clean and has plenty of moving supplies on hand for purchase. My unit does not have a light inside, so I would recommend bringing a flashlight if you need to go through things inside the unit. read more

Great place. I started off looking for a storage place online. I didn't expect much in the way of it being a personalized experience. That is until I met Mario. He stayed in touch throughout the entire process, went out of his way to make sure I got the right unit at the right price, and he even checked in on me to see how my move in experience went. They say people make the difference and Mario certainly has. Also, the units are clean, safe and the parking lots are even spacious enough to accommodate large vehicles for moving. This was my first storage experience and it went very smoothly. Mario was very helpful and courteous. There was an issue with the prior renter of the space I rented, and Mario provided me an alternative space since the prior renter hadn't moved everything out. Since he knew it was my first move, he kept the door open for me so I wouldn't have to keep punching in the code. read more

This is my third experience with self-storage, in my third city of residence, and this place is functional, friendly, very conveniently located for me, and reasonably priced. Because of my prior experiences, I knew how to approximate the storage unit size I would need, and I knew which bells and whistles I could live without (like I didn't need climate-controlled units), so shopping around was sensible. Some of the other staff seemed not too interested in helping me when I stopped by in person to see the place (e.g., I had to bring up the online deal of getting the first month for $1, and they could not arrange it in person, even with a printout of the advertisement, so they advised me to go online and reserve a unit that way - my advice to anyone else!). But the manager, Mario, was the person who was there when I actually signed the paperwork, and he was very nice to work with (despite the slightly annoying attempts to sell me packaging materials after I had already explained my stuff was already in boxes). The dollies and flatbed trolleys are supposed to only be available for check-out (free with an ID left at the office while you use it), but Mario told me that sometimes they will make arrangements with customers outside the usual hours, if you contact them ahead of time. The trips I have made to put things into storage or take stuff out, the staff has been very friendly, sometimes getting the doors or elevators for me. So I'm pleased with this choice because it's everything I needed and nothing I didn't want. Thanks, Public Storage! read more
