I've rented in this particular PS storage facility for some time now. It is clean, convenient and very well run. Last night on New Years Eve I dropped off a load of Christmas items to my unit, then found out my auto battery had died and the car wouldn't start. At 4:45pm on a Sunday NYE night I was worried about getting out of there, but Margaret, the Manager (who works until 5pm, even on NYE!) stepped up to help me jump my car and get me on my way. Avoid this facility. Unit sizes do not match advertisements. I recommend finding other storage options. We were moving from out of town and booked our unit online using a promotion. When we arrived we were surprised to find the dimensions of the unit were not as described in our contract. The roof of the unit was slanted and it was half the size as advertised, with low hanging pipes that make stacking boxes or bulky furniture impossible. We show up with our uhaul and there is no way it's going to fit, we had to switch units which caused a loss of promotion and over DOUBLE the price for the same size we had originally booked. We literally got trapped there, quite a horrible customer experience. Their corporate office gave us a bunch of legalese "unit sizes are approximate" and did not supply any refund. Prices are outrageous and continue to go up and up and up! Definitely feel taken advantage of! When you sign a contract the price should stay pretty stable for a while. We've been there less than two years and out rent has gone up almost $200/month...looking for alternatives as I write this! read more

This review applies to the Public Storage facility at 2047 E. Bayshore Road, Palo Alto. Positives: The move-in process, whereby a suitable padlock was ready and waiting for me in the unit, was seamless. Negatives: 1. The elevator was broken when I moved in, in November of 2024. It was STILL broken when I moved out in February of 2025. 2. The office seems never to be inhabited and I was unable ever to see or speak to a human being even on the phone. 3. Neither the Public Storage website, nor the automated telephone service, nor any signs at the facility provide any guidance as to how to close-out one's account. Because it was completely unclear what I was supposed to do with the padlock and keys (which they had originally provided), I guessed that I should leave the lock on the unit and keep the keys to give or send back to them (somehow). That was wrong. It turns out I was supposed to take the lock and keys with me and that they were supposed to be mine to keep. But, as mentioned previously, there was no explanation of this process to be found ANYWHERE! And, as a consequence, I did something that turned out to be, from their perspective, the wrong thing, and therefore was charged for an extra month of rent for a storage room that I had emptied and no longer needed. Conclusion: I strongly advise finding some other storage facility. read more

THE WORST! Our unit(and 6 more) has been broken into, EVERYTHING was STOLEN. And nobody even noticed that. When they'd finally found a broken lock on the floor after a week since break-in, they just put a new one and didn't notify us. Police couldn't get camera records from them for weeks! Manager Farzaneh Yountchi gave us her business card but never answered our emails. And the worst. The police found out that the burglar has rented a unit right there, has been sleeping there, using drugs, smoking, sorting stolen stuff. And nobody even noticed that! There is total chaos in this storage. Not recommended if you expect to pick up your stuff from storage again. read more

When I needed to move from a large unit into a smaller one, I asked the staff to call me when a unit on the same floor became available so that the move would be easy for me (no stairs and no elevator required). The staff notified me AND gave me a great price for the new smaller unit. read more

I rented this storage unit for a month while my son was briefly out of his college dorm. I was very impressed with this business and Margaret was excellent! She was super helpful, even changing her lunch hour so that she could meet me when I arrived from Alaska. She set my son and I up with everything we needed and let us use the "orange cart" to move our stuff around. The property was safe and secure, and the storage unit clean. When we returned a month later to move my son's stuff back into his dorm, Margaret was again very helpful and the move out process went very smoothly. I give her an A+ for the entire move in, and move out process, and we will be using this facility again during the summers while my son is in college. Today I arranged to move out of public storage. I brought 3 helpers and a truck. When I arrived, I was told that the elevators were not working - apparently shut down because they were not safe! Beyond that, they hadn't been working for over a week, and had not notified anyone!!! They have no estimate as to when they will be fixed. So I wasn't able to move, and am having to pay storage for another month or until the elevators work again. Then I will have to rent a truck again, and hire 3 additional workers. Public Storage, the company and its District Manager, has no consideration for its customers. They take you for granted. The elevator at the 2047 E Bayshore Road Public Storage has not worked since May 3. A WORKING elevator is fundamental to customer service and the purpose of Public Storage as a service. It is LUDICROUS that Public Storage has not sent out an emergency crew by May 3, to have this elevator working by May 4. Can you imagine the fire trap they have created. Can you imagine the utter inconvenience to its paying customers? We are told....'Get us a quote from a mover, and we will cut the mover a check for the cost of moving your boxes to your car, three stories down'. Dear Owners of Public Storage: While you think it ok to nickle and dime your customers with fees for everything you can think of, I think it is time you query your District Manager as to why her competency does not include keeping the fundamental equipment necessary to running your business. If your motor throws rods, you fix it immediately in order to get to work. Very sad, very sad day that Quality is not part of your Corporate Culture. And oh, by the way, DO think of promoting the on site worker MARGARET that you and your District Manager Ms Yountichi are forcing to deal with your ELEPHANT in the ROOM. Margaret should be running Public Storage, District Wide, if not Country Wide because she handles expertly, and with aplomb, the irate public per the situation you keep her swimming in. Can you imagine: 1. you rent and store your stuff, and 2. you go back to get your stuff, and for over 1 month, you can't get your stuff, so 3. you are told you must spend your time getting quotes from movers, so 4. you are not hauling your 60 boxes down 3 flights of stairs that the onsite elevator once took up. The liabilities of your negligence is shocking. If I had known you have such low standards for maintaining your equipment, I would would have not chosen Public Storage. Now we all know. If I were a shareholder of Public Storage I would bail this stock, if it is publicly traded. The blatant incompetency a company tolerating a District Manager for not dealing with the problem for over over 50+ days tells me the incompetency or willing to just sit back and screw their customers is worse. Never will I ever store stuff at Public Storage for the baseline principle of lack of attention to the only thing that really matters at a storage facility: THE FREIGHT ELEVATOR. read more

I rented a unit and moved all my things in. When I went back a few days later, there was debris all over my belongings - apparently getting blown in from the roof. I come to find out that there was a known issue in this unit and they let me move all my stuff into it anyway with no warning. Oh - and that 'debris' that's all over everything? Turns out it's termite droppings. So, best case scenario, I have to clean termite droppings off of everything I own. Worst case, my things are infested by termites and when I move them into my new home, it can now be infested with termites. The owner then proceeded to not respond to my inquiries for weeks and when they finally got back to me, refused to even give me a discount. I also asked to have someone fix the problem and nothing was done so the problem has gotten worse and worse. So sketchy and unacceptable. I would never rent from any place owned by that owner again. On the plus side, the manager on site is very nice and seems to do her best to keep the place looking nice and take care of the customers. read more

Switching storage facilities is just about as painful and dreary as watching an episode of Dr. Phil, I think. I have a unit at this place in Palo Alto--had to get it when I needed to store some stuff between subletting gigs back when I first moved out here. Once you fill one of these damn things up, you'll crawl thru glass rather than move the crap. I thought I had a good thing going--until I found out that the going rate at this place was a good 30% below the rate I've been paying for the past four years. The coupe-de-grace was when I dashed down on a Sunday to get some luggage out for a business trip to Geneva, and couldn't get the elevator to go to my floor. The office was closed and their 800 service number was A) rude as hell and B) useless. I delivered a comprehensive telephone reaming the next morning from the airport, new luggage in hand. To their credit they comped me a certain number of months and dropped my rate forthwith, but as soon as I find the right replacement place, rent a truck, and eat my spinach to deal with the physical nightmare of moving all this crap I should be throwing out, I'm gone daddy gone, love is gone. read more

Just barely started renting, so this review is for the checkin process (will update once I've been with them for longer): Definitely reserve your spot online at Public Storage's website. The deals are amazing. If you need a longer reserve window, call, they seem willing to accomodate sometimes. Checkin: Margaret is great. easy, quick process (10minute tour, 10 minute checkin, give or take). She even had home made cookies and cornbread for us. Facilities: seem good. We're doing a 10x10ft. Not 'climate controlled', but it's insulated well enough that it was VERY cool inside. She claimed that when it is 94 outside, it was 80 inside -- that's better than most climate controlled places if true (I have no reason to believe otherwise, it seems likely). Lots of cameras, each person has a unique gate code, everything seems secure. Sidenote, while EPA isn't the most safe spot, I do often see police patrolling near this area at night, which makes me think it may be well watched. Not too worried about security. read more

I had an excellent experience at Public Storage. I called their main number looking for a unit to store my car temporarily. They didn't have any units available of just that size and the price for a larger unit was quite high for me. However, as soon as I mentioned I only needed it for a month, she immediately offered me the $1 first month deal (which, as expected, turned out to be $34 with admin fees and insurance) on a bigger unit. Once I arrived at the site, Margaret was very helpful in showing me the unit and going through all the paperwork details. She was also very clear about when the next payment would be due and when (leniency period included) I would have to cancel my unit by in order to avoid a 2nd months charge. The unit itself was nice and more than big enough. It did have a small light inside, which was fine for just dropping off the car, but might be insufficient if you have lots of boxes and need to find stuff. It was clean as was the rest of the facility. It is protected by a keycode gate and looked secure enough. When I came to pick up my car, Marshann was friendly and helpful as I closed out my account. I would definitely recommend Public Storage! read more

I got a great rate for a large unit for work, lock was provided, and it is cheaper than the smaller unit we had at another area storage facility. A friend in LA has had her unit with this company broken into twice. During the investigation, the police have learned that the break ins are common with Public Storage and the company refuses to put in sufficient cameras or investigate the thefts. The detectives are extremely frustrated because it's happening all over LA. It appears the company just doesn't care and that applies to ALL FACILITIES in the US. The detectives are now trying to reach the Public Storage board to get their attention. Stay away! They don't provide the level of security they say they do and don't put effort in when their clients are robbed. read more

RIP OFF ARTISTS. I rented a 15x5 space online. I knew it was in a seriously sketchy neighborhood, but it's not that unusual for the storage lockers to be out by the crack dealers and mobile home parks. When I came by in person, they jacked up the price for "mandatory insurance" that they don't allow you to opt out of. They will also charge you $20 for a simple padlock if you don't catch it on the invoice. I was a little annoyed by this, but needed the storage space, so OK. They gave me my lease agreement, I paid two months in advance, and I was done. Then, when I went to the locker, it wasn't 5x15. Most of the space in the room was taken up by some huge piece of building-related equipment and ducts -- the usable space was tiny, about 5x5. I went back down to the office and explained that I actually needed the space I had paid for, not one that was a third the size. The manager said she had another space she could substitute, which turned out to be a bit bigger than the original one. She was in a hurry to leave, so she crossed out the old space number on the rental agreement and wrote in the new one, and initialed the change. I moved my belongings in that evening. The next day, I came by to put some more things in the locker and there was another lock on my space, preventing me from getting into it. I went to the office and they said that they had locked the space and I wouldn't be allowed to access my belongings until I signed a "new lease agreement." I looked at the new agreement and ITS PRICE WAS DOUBLE THE RATE. I explained that I already had a lease agreement, and that I wasn't going to pay twice the rate we had agreed on for the same space. They said that was the only way I could get my belongings. So now, I have a lease agreement from them, and I paid two months in advance, but they are shaking me down for twice as much money by denying me access to my belongings. I have to involve the police and courts just to get access to my own possessions, because this place is run by con artist extortionists who rip off their customers. STAY AWAY. read more

I have to add an update to my last review. Another wonderful experience this time but I worked with Margaret, the owner/manager. She made my moving day easier as I discovered my previously rented 10 x 20' unit would not quite hold my stuff. I also had a 5 x 10' unit but as the movers were "moving" fast and wanted to be gone ASAP, I didn't want take a chance that the already partially filled 5 x 10 would be too small. I quickly got on the Public Storage website on my iPhone and reserved a 10 x 10'. Margaret was able to quickly and smoothly transfer me from the smaller to the larger unit. She was cool, calm, and collected while she processed the many pieces of paperwork and her demeanor helped keep me calm. I have been with Public Storage for awhile in both CA and WA state. When I moved my belongings out of my WA storage location they said that the credit machine did not work and therefore had to pay cash. I later found out that the machine actually did work and my card was charged. WA then said they would use the overpayment to pay the next month's rent. I MOVED MY BELONGINGS OUT. There was nothing to pay for. Margaret, in Palo Alto, went the extra step and spoke with the regional manager and I got my money back immediately. She was extremely helpful and professional. She helped me find the best deal for a unit here. I really appreciate the time she spent helping us out. I highly recommend this location and you should check in with Margaret! Don't waste your time! This storage site is dirty and sketchy for sure. There are no security cameras and you know that going there without the office being open is taking a chance you probably shouldn't. I've stored items with different company"s and this is really the worst. Besides being very dirty, in a bad area and no security, the lighting is almost non-existent. It's one bulb hanging from a wire! If you have to use public storage give this location a miss for sure. read more
