TL;DR: I am a lazy man with an impractical car who will put up with incessant price gouging to avoid moving my stuff down the street. Now, because of $65 and a clerk who escalated, Public Storage Elkridge lost a customer who spent nearly $10,000 over the past ten years. Do NOT rent here unless you want to overpay and be treated rudely.
Long version: I've had a 5x5 unit here for more than 10 years, since the facility was under another name. The price increased every so often under both the old and new owners (though the price hikes are steeper and more frequent with the new people), so every few years I move to a new unit to reset to a lower price. They made money, I kept my stuff safe, everyone was happy.
In early June, I went by when they were supposedly open but the office was dark. The clerk showed up about 30 minutes later, set up a contract at slightly lower pricing, and I moved my stuff to a new unit. A week later, I noticed I hadn't gotten a pro-rated refund (about $65) for my June rent on the original unit. The clerk told me they don't pro-rate fees. I asked why he didn't tell me that when I cancelled my contract, and he claimed he didn't remember our conversation but he knew I was trying to save money so he moved my unit. I again asked why, if he knew I was trying to save money, he didn't suggest I wait until the end of the month. He escalated, I realized I was about to escalate, so I told him I'd be out by the end of the month and walked out.
I understand it's my responsibility to read the fine print and ask questions. Fair enough. With that said, my annoyance boils down to three things:
1) They raise the rates every 6 months. It's standard practice but it's still a crappy thing to do. If you're renting a unit here, watch out and make them jump through the hoops to move you every time they raise the price.
2) The clerk put the short-term win of getting an extra $65 ahead of the fact that I've paid close to $10,000 in rental fees over 10+ years. A company that understands trust and relationship building would train their staff to say, "You should wait until the end of the month to change units, you'll save about 65 bucks." In fact, that's what the old owners always did (which I unfortunately didn't remember). If the clerk had done that, I'd be keeping my stuff there and they'd get at least another $800 out of me.
3) The guy at the counter escalated. I've worked in the service field my whole life, and I'm not a "customer is always right" kind of guy. I do, however, believe in empathy and I don't tolerate escalation, in myself or others. If the clerk had simply said, "Hey, I usually tell people about the pro-rated fees and I missed the boat with you. That was my mistake, and I'm sorry," my frustration would have immediately defused and I would have kept my stuff there.
This could be an case study in how to keep or lose customers. I am a lazy man with an impractical car who will put up with incessant price gouging to avoid moving my stuff down the street. Now, because of $65 and a clerk who escalated, Public Storage Elkridge lost a customer who spent nearly $10,000 over the past ten years.
I suggest you find another storage unit, preferably one that is independently owned by people who understand relationship building. There are several other facilities close to this one, so I strongly suggest you look elsewhere. read more
