I rented a storage locker online, assured (by the website) that I was getting the best price possible. When I went to the facility, the manager explained that rent was month-to-month, and that they could raise my rent with a month's notice (although he said they tended to only raise rents once per year). Today, I came to Yelp to give them a very positive review, and found that there were two sales going on: one for $1 first month's rent and 15% off, and another renting the locker I am paying $131/month for (10x10) for $86.50. Obviously, the website wasn't giving me the best price, like it claimed! It also seems unfair that if the company raises the rents, I pay the higher rate, but if they lower the rents, I don't pay the lower rate. I called and asked if I could get either the sale or the lower price, and was told that I couldn't. I was given the contact information for the district manager, Drew, and I left him a message explaining the situation; he got back to me and while polite, refused to change the price I was paying, saying that the price I had found was a special that was determined by demand and availability. Ah well, worth a shot.
As for the review I was going to give, it was this. I was very happy with this Public Storage. The lockers here were far cheaper than those in the city; I don't have a car, so will have to take a $15 Uber back and forth each time I visit, but I'm still saving money. The manager explained that it's all the Boston students storing for the summer that affects availability and price. The manager, Nick, also helped me pick some boxes, bubble wrap, storage bags for fabric furniture, and tape. Nick really recommended using the bags, since even though the building is climate-controlled, people can store whatever, and the bags would keep away mold, etc. I will note that the prices of boxes are about double what I paid at U-Haul, but still, given the expenses of moving, it didn't amount to much. Also, they will take back any unused material. They sell prepared box sets, but Nick advised against buying them, since once you open them, you can't return part of the set. I was able to return two furniture bags without a problem and without a receipt; they credited my credit card.
You have to buy one of their locks that are pre-designed to fit right in their locker doors. I think it was about $20-25. The whole lock comes out when you unlock it, and Nick recommended that I keep the lock when I moved out, as it could be reused at any Public Storage.
When I went to move in (I had a professional company move me, Raimond's Movers, who were excellent), everything was great. There were at least five moving carts (the flat kind with a handle at one end), and since this was still relatively early on a weekday, there was no one there my movers had to share with. There are two elevators and they are pretty fast, which was nice because I was paying the movers by the hour.
Despite the unresolved price issue, which might be resolved, I am overall very happy with this place. read more
