I don't like crust. Except for the crust here. It's flaky and delicious and filled with the most balanced filling I've had in ages. My sour cream and blueberry with streusel was perfectly sweet and creamy and I wish I had gotten more than just a slice! Trust me, get an extra slice, or maybe a savory pie for the road! The line outside this little shop looks too long, but it flies- less than a minute per customer, without it ever feeling like they're rushing you. The crew inside is quick and much friendlier than you'd think possible in such a busy place. Even on a Saturday afternoon that saw everyone in the world seemingly wanting pie, we were through the line in minutes. Because everything move quickly, there are always parking spots opening. read more

Oh my goodness, the pie and desserts here were amazing. I ordered the smoked salmon, leek, & potato and the pork chile rojo.. the crust on these pies were so good! The buttery smell hit you as soon as you opened the bag. The real star of the show was the turtle pie. It was literally the best turtle pie I ever had. The sea salt finish really brought it together. 10 out of 10. read more

The savory and the sweet pies are all excellent and I appreciate that they have vegan options. The savory pies can very conveniently be eaten as a hand pie. Will definitely stop by whenever I'm back in Richmond. read more

Had a chance to swing by proper pie after a good year and was so worth it. The savory pie selection has vastly increased since the last time I had visited. The lamb, steak, and broccoli mushroom were all great! And of course the sweet pies were delicious as well. Friendly and quick check out at the walk up window. Never disappoints. Savory pies are so delicious! It's like a meal in a pie with a delicious and perfectly baked flaky crust! The flavors I got were steak and cheese, turkey cranberry and brie, and curried beef. Not a huge curry fan; however, it still tasted great! Will definitely stop by to try more the next time we're in this area!! read more

Got a sweet tooth?? Look no further!! I'm not a pie type of person and when I usually see them on dessert menus, I typically don't order them. This restaurant however received such good ratings and I've been hearing the buzz for many years so we finally tried it this past weekend. Yum!! The banoffee, which is a pie made of bananas, cream and toffee was sooo good. I highly recommend this favor. I've actually never tried a banoffee pie but decided to try, I was not disappointed, my son loved it as well so really we could've had another slice. Lol. There was lots of banana slices and i was thinking it would be too sweet cause of the toffee, not the case. It was perfect. We also got the coconut cream pie which was good as well, however I did think this was a little bit sweet. Still good especially for you love coconuts! They do have many flavors to choose from and they also have savory pies for lunch. Can't wait to try more!! read more

Proper Pie - Strawberry cream pie - Desserts Near Me - Richmond, Virginia

A solid pie shop, but it was the underwhelming classic sweets that stop me from giving them a full 5 stars. First off, as an Aussie American, I've had my share of Anzac biscuits as lamington, so I have certain standards especially when it comes to classic faves like these. ++ Both "chicken pesto and sundried tomato" and "smoked salmon, leek, and potato" pies were decent. Fillings were even and toasty, and the whole structure held up well. The thing that keeps pies from being my go-to is the fact that there always way too much crust as compared to fillings. The pies here are better than many others in that respect. 4/5 Louise slice: the three layers deliver a variety of textures, colours and flavours, and I really like the strawberry jam layer. 5/5 Hazelnut tan slice: perhaps the hazelnut is not strong enough, and that's why this doesn't knock me out. The sticky middle layer is fun, but the powder on top is lip-binding and I can do without it. 3/5 - - Lamington: theirs is simply disappointing. The sponge cake is dry, coconut is too coarse, and the chocolate coating looks and tastes like it's glued on, rather than dipped or drizzled. 2/5 Anzac biscuits: another classic that's ruined by, in this case, unnecessarily sticky texture and not enough of the core ingredients that make Anzac: oats and coconut. 1.5/5 All in all, I like the casual vibe and the big water glass, but their classic desserts ultimately let me down. I hope they continue to improve. read more

Great pies! And the lil savory dishes excellent as well. You won't regret giving a try. Great to kill that sweet tooth!

Ordered this pie online while walking around Church Hill, and it was ready for pickup within 20 minutes. The pie crust was flakey and crispy and didn't feel too heavy. I do wish there was more salmon and leek because the filling was mostly potato. Not too salty and a good size for one person! read more

some of the best pies i've ever had! there is a diverse selection with a ton of sweet and savory options. i tried their key lime pie and it was really good! not pictured, but i also got their savory pie and it was super good. for the price, you're getting a great portion. since the pies are premade, the food comes out quick, and the cashiers are really kind. sadly, the inside of the store is not open, but they have a couple of tables set up. across the street there is also a cozy park with lots of seating, so there's no need to worry about the ambiance. i would definitely recommend this place. read more

...what they really sell are hugs, encased in the flakiest, yummiest pie crust. I do wish they'd bring their lamingtons back occasionally, even just for special occasions. read more

I love pies - my friends lived in New Zealand for a few years and enjoy proper pie, so they brought me here on my visit as well! I had a mince and cheese as well as a slice of Dutch Apple. And I ate it all so no photos haha. But there's a good mix of sweet and savory, so something for everyone. We ate ours at home, but you do have to take it to go from their window - there's a little park across the street you could use for a picnic spot. Very tasty, flaky crust, and no soggy bottoms! read more

Man oh man, do they serve proper pies at Proper Pie. I first got to try the magical pecan pie and chocolate chess pie at a tasting for my sister-in-law's rehearsal dinner. Both pies were superb - the pie crust was thick and perfectly baked golden brown with a hint of salt. The filling was rich and ample. The pecan pie has to be the best rendition I have ever tried. It is jam-packed with fat and plump pecans. I never considered myself a fan until I found myself on a second slice of that pecan pie from Proper Pie. This weekend, I got to try the strawberry rhubarb as well, which is just as fantastic. It is just so pleasing to see big chunks of rhubarb and caramelized strawberry oozing out of perfectly golden brown crust. I heard their savory pies are just as stellar - I'll have to put in extra miles for all this pie, but so worth it! read more

I love proper pie. The Anzac biscuit used to be my fave go to keep handy for breakfast. I was over there the other and realized that the recipe has changed. So I gave that up. Now I stick to the delicious pies. It really doesn't matter which one you try because they are all de-lish! read more

Omg! These pies are so good! I had the pear and almond pie and it wasn't too sweet, but just right. Definitely recommend getting it with ice cream. Super cute window to order. I don't know what 2017 me was thinking. This is definitely a 5 STAR RESTAURANT! All of the pies, savory and sweet, are DELICIOUS. They are operating very carefully with COVID with a pre-order and takeout only method. Online ordering begins at 10am the day of and you can choose your pickup time. Apparently if you aren't able to order online ahead of time, you can call and place an order. I am working my way through their menu to try them all. My favorite is the pork and peach bbq, followed closely by the savory mince & cheese and the turkey, cranberry, & brie. You really can't go wrong with anything you order, just take the leap - flaky, buttery, deliciousness awaits! read more

10/5 stars MY FAVORITE PLACE ON PLANET EARTH This little gem right here has the friendliest staff and just overall great vibes - always excited to come by! The pies have been so consistent for the 4 years I've been coming! My sister told me about this place when I came to VCU for my freshman orientation and ever since she told me to bring her back some- I've fallen in love! Ps: I'm also just a pie fanatic since I was little (I had those rubber bracelets literally customized to say "I like to eat pie" ) anyways fun fact lol But let's start with savory pies: Surprising the pork and apple/pear (depending on the day) was absolutely delicious! Obviously it's definitely something you don't hear everyday but it gives that perfect savory/sweet palette thats not overbearing! Think of al pastor - how it has pineapple In it ! Same concept just better! Spinach feta and chickpea roll is great if you want something smaller! Both chili bean and cheese / vegan version are both fantastic ! ( I was pescatarian for a bit so this place always had a place in my heart haha) I absolutely love that this place has vegan options as many people of Richmond are non-meat eaters I've tried so many that I can't even remember the rest of their names but I was Never disappointed with the savory pies!! Always try the new flavors !!!! THE CRUST IS ALWAYS ON POINT AND THE TEMP OF THE PIES ALWAYS PERFECT! SWEET PIES : my absolute fav is the sour cream and wild blueberry streusel! - both the tang and sweet worked perfectly together!!! I think the ONLY one I wasn't that big of a fan of was the strawberry rhubarb but personal preference ! Coconut cream was delicious not too sweet, lemon meringue is lemon meringue haha , texture was light but creamy, super tangy beware I've recommend this place to every single soul I've encountered lol OVERALL I side with the savory pies over the sweet ones , since sometimes the sweet ones can be toooo sweet! read more

These pies are the real deal! The savory pies are similar to empanadas. Morsels of filling covered in a flaky pie crust. I had buffalo chicken, spinach and cheese, and broccoli and cheddar cheese- that one being my favorite, it reminded me of my favorite soup! But save some room for a slice of sweet pie! I had apple pie just to try out a classic and it was delicious. It was sweet, buttery, cinnamon-y and everything you want in a homemade pie. The line went quick and you get your pie immediately at the counter. read more

YUMMY. Tried the salmon, chicken, and mince&cheese savory pies and ohmygoodness they were so fun to eat! The fillings of each are gooey and delish. I liked ripping off the pie crust and dipping it into the filling since it's kinda dense. We also got the lemon meringue and mango coconut sweet pies. Even better. I really recommend the refreshing and not too sweet mango coconut one. The flavors just go together so well!! Service was super speedy. A great place to stop by for something quick, tasty, and easy to eat outside. read more

This is my new favorite place in Richmond, no lie. They have it all... savory pies, sweet pies, every possible palate can find something. They change their flavors almost daily with a few core flavors. I had the savory lamb pie which was honestly mind-blowing. I craved it for days after having it. There was so much flavor and the meat was so tender. I've also heard great things about the vegan lentil! I'll get that next time! Finally, the best part. I had the blueberry sour cream and raspberry buttermilk pies. The blueberry is a gem. That's all I have to say. The best pie I've ever had. I bought 5 slices to take home after. GO THERE AND GET THAT EXACT PIE AND THEN MESSAGE ME YOUR THANK YOUS! This place is flawless and the staff is as sweet as their pie! read more

Best pie makers in town! Over the years I tried so many flavors but never disappointed. Today, my friends and I got: *Thai Butternut Curry: the best out of all. Right amount of sweetness that has hint of spicy. *Steak, bacon, and tomatoes: very savory. Good mix of dryness of meat and juiciness of tomato. *Pork & peach BBQ: good! The pork was little dry. *Lamb, spinach, and white bean: there was a tiny bit distinct lamb smell. I usually don't eat lamb because of the smell but it was still okay for me. I liked the white bean. *coconut creme: oh em gee. Satisfied my sweet cravings in one go. This was literally the best pie ever. Chocolate chess: so sweet! The chocolate tasted like mousse. Small interior and long line but fast service. I'm definitely going back! read more

This place is amazing! The ambiance is just adorable-kind of a retro feel with the long counter. My friend had just moved to Richland she heard about Proper Pie Co. around Thanksgiving. They were all sold out of pies for the holiday and she suggested giving it another try when I came to visit. I ordered a slice of the pumpkin and salted caramel pie and the steak, mushroom, and Gorgonzola pie to take back home. My savory pie was a perfect personal size. The crust was flaky, buttery, and heavenly. The inside was gooey cheese and perfectly cooked mushrooms and steak. I loved every single bite. The pumpkin and salted caramel pie was quite possibly the best pumpkin pie I've ever eaten- no joke! The crust was flaky and it was a perfect amount of caramel and pumpkin. I tried a few bites of my friend's savory salmon, leek, and potato pie also. It was just as tasty as my steak and mushroom pie. The staff was incredibly friendly and very patient with me trying to make up my mind. I'm a huge fan and I think this is my new favorite place in Richmond. I'll be stopping by every time I visit. Nice job Proper Pie Co.; you guys are doing it right! read more

Where do I begin??! Stumbled upon this tiny pie shop completely by accident. I was enjoying the views at Libby Hill Park while super hungry, and one of the yelp suggestions was this place. Upon entrance, I was greeted by a group of friendly employees who were willing to answer any questions I may have. The shop itself is pretty tiny, although it does have some seating room. The decor is simple and cute. They offer a good variety of savory and sweet pies, but the sweet pies are out on display so needless to say, I was drooling the whole time I was at the counter trying to make my choice. At first I got a spinach pie but quickly decided to get a slice of the yummy-looking Campfire pie slice. I wouldn't necessarily go back for the spinach pie, but I liked that it wasn't just dough and it had plenty of filling. Now the campfire pie was a different story! It was to die for and I'm almost happy I don't live in Richmond because otherwise I would be in trouble hahaha. The slice was a generous size with a yummy crust, delicious chocolate and the slightly toasted marshmallow topping were all I needed. Super tasty. I think I paid for both pies about $10 or so, but it was well worth it! read more

Another place that lives up to the hype! I had to write a review after eating these pies!!!! My boyfriend and I went on PI (3/14) Day and the line was out the door. We went around 4pm, and most of the pies were sold out! Only three sweet pies were left. With the limited options, my boyfriend and I chose the strawberry rhubarb vegan pie and the derby. The strawberry rhubarb was refreshing and not overwhelmingly sweet. It sort of reminded me of a slightly sour strawberry lemonade. DELICIOUS. It was a nice pie to enjoy while we were sitting in beautiful weather at the parkk. My boyfriend and I really liked cause it was refreshing and not too sweet. And its vegan!! Now for the derby....wow. If you love chocolate then you will LOVE this pie. It has caramel, walnuts, bourbon, and chocolate! DELICIOUS. I did not know what to expect from this pie, but I am so glad i got it. Although my boyfriend and I didnt get the pies we wanted cause it was sold out, the options that we did end up getting was just as good. Definitely need to come back for more pies!!!!! The crust was also really nice! I was never truly a pie person, because most pies I have had in the past were too sweet. THIS PLACE CONVERTED ME TO LIKE PIES. read more

Proper pie's pie are amazing. Incredibly delicious. My favorite is the Strawberry Rhubarb, but given the careful quality of all their offerings I am sure all their pies are equally as fabulous. My first experience with proper pie was hectic. The street was closed for a festival but fortunately they had a tent outside their shop. After pushing through crowds and waiting in line for my pie, I was greeted with such friendly staff. My favorite pie was the Butter Chicken. It had great flavor. We also tried their Guinness and steak, and pork and cabbage pies. I appreciate how the dough did not get soggy from the contents inside despite their being sauce even after being refrigerated and reheated 2 days after. Lastly we did try a fruit pie. It was blueberry and something else, I can't recall. It had a nice flavor and wasn't too sweet. It was a great flavor to accompany the Guinness and steak pie. Overall, I would recommend! read more

I'm glad I don't live close to this place otherwise I'd be super fat! Came in for an afternoon sugar rush and got the blueberry apple vegan pie, steak and cheese pie, and the friend had the strawberry pie. The blueberry apple pie was delicious but I favored the strawberry pie. The steak and cheese pie was saved for later. I rebaked it and the crust was amazing, buttery and flaky, but I did not enjoy the fillings. The beef tasted meh, didn't really have any flavor to it and I didn't taste or see any cheese. Definitely gonna pop in again when I'm in town. read more

This is an essential place to visit in Richmond. Their savory pies are so good that we once went twice in one day just to try more of their varieties. Eating their savory pies feel more like eating small pot-pies... creamy but not soupy! The ratings on Proper Pie are spot on. This little hidden gem is cranking out some of the best pies I've ever tasted. My husband and I decided to go the savory route for our first visit. I had the minced meat & cheese pie and he decided on a Jamaican Beef Patty. Both pies were piping hot and delicious. After we were a few bites in one of the employees came by to check on us and casually mentioned that the Beef patty was made with pork fat!! Considering my husband cannot eat pork this was a pretty big deal. Although I really loved my pie I think the restaurant needs to be a little more transparent about the ingredients. read more

Pretty sure this place is secretly run by a group of personal trainers who know we are powerless to resist.

Proper Pie has always been delicious, but they've come a long way since they opened by way of service and menu--service has improved tremendously (the staff is actually friendly and don't seem as irritated and overworked anymore), they don't seem to run out of things as quickly, and the menu has expanded. More savory pies. More sweet pies. They actually have soup now. They really have gotten it down to a science. Took a friend today who has never been and she chose blueberry/apple pie and lemon meringue. Yesterday, I got a mince and cheese, a Thai curry chicken and a coconut cream. All delicious. read more
