I really wanted to love this place. The ambiance is genuinely nice-- stylish and the kind of atmosphere that makes you want to settle in for a relaxed dinner. Unfortunately, almost everything else fell flat. The menu is quite limited, and the drink selection is even more restricted. No Merlot on the wine list? That was surprising. We were also disappointed to hear the skirt steak was already sold out by 5:00 pm, especially given how few entrée options there were to begin with. The food itself was a major letdown. The "de-boned" bronzino was anything but-- it arrived with tons of bones, making it unpleasant to eat. The French dip sandwich was downright horrible, lacking flavor and horrible texture. Service was slow and inattentive, which only made the experience more frustrating. To top it off, there was a bug floating in my martini. Water kept dripping from the vent onto our table throughout the meal. Little things like that really ruin the vibe. If you're going for the nice setting alone, maybe it's worth a quick drink. But for a proper dinner with reliable food and service? I'd look elsewhere. One star and that's being generous for the atmosphere and prime location. read more

I decided to try out their happy hour menu. Happy Hour starts at 1pm, one of the earliest you will find in this area, which is what drew me in. I took a seat at the end of the empty bar and waited for a bartender. I was greeted quickly and offered a lunch and cocktail menu. However, I had to ask for the Happy Hour Menu (I arrived at 1:13pm). Not sure if this is a standard practice or if the bartender truly had just lost track of time. After perusing the happy hour menu (all items listed are $10) I decided on the Citrus Mojito, the Wagyu Steak Skewer, the Beef Cheek Empanada and the Lobster Bisque Shooter. The mojito was GOOD. Very refreshing, not too sweet, yet still light and flavorful. I felt good after one. The Wagyu Steak Skewer was the most UNDERWHELMING choice of the afternoon. Thick cut of meat, salted nicely, but if you don't like your cow still mooing don't order! I did not get a choice in temperature. It wasn't a huge deterrent for me but definitely could be unsettling for others. The Beef Cheek Empanada was my favorite bite of the afternoon. My only complaint is that you only get one per order lol. Flakey crust. Filled with nicely seasoned beef. 10/10! The Lobster Bisque Shooter has great potential, but today, was poorly executed. The lobster bisque itself is exceptionally flavorful, but terribly salty. It doesn't help that the cheese in the grilled cheese sandwich adds a layer of salt, that in conjunction with the soup, just ultimately cripples the dish. Any happy hour downtown with a $10 drink option is a gem in itself, but I would certainly return for the empanadas. read more

We stayed at The Ben Hotel for my partner's milestone birthday and, after wandering around looking for a dinner spot, decided to return to the hotel restaurant, Proper Grit, and I am so glad we did. What started as a change of plans turned into one of the highlights of our trip. From the moment we sat down, Tralanda, our server, set the tone for an exceptional evening. She was warm, attentive, and went above and beyond to make us feel genuinely cared for. I wasn't feeling well and she immediately stepped in with fresh hot ciabatta bread and soda with bitters. These are the simple, thoughtful gestures that made a world of difference. We started with a pear and feta salad that was beautifully plated and incredibly fresh--bright flavors, perfect for opening the meal. For the main course, we shared the pork chop with coconut rice, which the chef graciously Florentined and split for us. The pork chop was cooked to perfection. Tender, juicy, and full of flavor. The coconut rice was a creative, tropical twist that paired surprisingly well and elevated the dish. The ambiance was just what we needed. It was quiet, romantic, and intimate. The service and food combined created the perfect atmosphere for a dinner to remember. While the meal was lovely, it was Tralanda's outstanding hospitality that truly made the night unforgettable. She is a gem, and I cannot thank her enough for turning an ordinary evening into something truly special. Came here for happy hour and a quick bite to eat in the late afternoon on Friday. The appetizers were subpar, the mac & cheese was very cold. I would not recommend it. The French dip was decent, but wasn't great. We also ordered the lobster roll, which was extremely disappointing. The bread was basically stale, and the lobster was a bit fishy, had no flavor and was very dry. I really didn't like the mayo aïoli that came on top of it either overall, not the best experience. Our server was very friendly and they did play live music, which was lovely. I'd recommend just to come here for a drink and enjoy the music. read more

Incredible meal and beautiful restaurant in downtown West Palm. We visited on a recent trip and were so impressed by the food and service. We loved the decor for Christmas and food options. We had a citrus salad with goat cheese, the chicken paillard, and artichoke risotto. We loved all of our food, but the risotto was a little on the salty side. We came by Boat to stay at The Palm Harbor Marina for 2 nights to see America 250 fireworks and we were delighted to discover the Ben was within a one block walking distance. We had had lunch at Spruzzo their rooftop open air restaurant, during the Palm Beach boat show in March and loved it, sitting upstairs and looking out at all the boats, but for dinner last night, we opted to eat at Proper Grit because, well, frankly, it's summer and it's a lot hotter now than when we were here in March, and they have air-conditioning. The menu did not disappoint. As an appetizer we ordered the house-made chips with Parmesan and onion dip that was lighter than air. Incredible! Plus their warm bread to start with and the honey butter is reason enough to return! We ordered salads, Caesar for him and citrus & greens for me. Both excellent. My husband had skirt steak and I had the cast-iron skillet salmon. My salmon and his steak were cooked to perfection and delicious. We ordered the roasted asparagus as our side and it was also delicious. Our server was Danielle and she was delightful and attentive without being overbearing. This is such a cute spot in Clematis. Sunday brunch was very mellow. We had a reservation but it didn't seem too packed. People may have still been out celebrating Easter. Nonetheless, great service, great food. Gorkem, our server was a delight. He must have said at least 20 times, "Anything else I can do better for you." We thought that was such a different yet powerful way of asking us how things were going. The chicken and waffle meal on the brunch menu was delicious. I had a mimosa as well as The Inspiration cocktail. The Inspiration was such a hit; we ended with an extra on the house since they made more than anticipated at one point. Overall, great brunch spot. Stopped here to grab an early dinner with hubs and MIL. We were greeted and seated promptly by the hostess with an option to sit where we were comfortable. After that we waited about 15 min for someone to serve the table but once our waiter came, service was pretty good and consistent. We ordered the honey walnut cauliflower- fantastic flavor bomb Me and MIL split the shaved ribeye sandwich and glad we did because it was full of meat and delicious! Also got side salads. My ring fell and lodged itself in the sink drain(the top) and a bunch of people that worked there helped to get it out. From the restaurant you can see the ice rink which is nice to watch. I came here with friends and was deeply impressed with their lovely ambiance and terrific food and cocktail menus; terrific. I felt terrific and magical, magical and terrific. Any restaurant that has an appetizer called "Hanging Bacon" is going to be "A" Number One in my book. They had bacon hanging from a rod, dripping its bacon grease onto freshly made cornbread, covered in creamy servings of butter. I could just sit there and eat that, and everything in the Universe would be alright. A symphony of succulent savory satisfaction that all foods categorized as savory should follow. Savoring each bite made me believe we have a future before being washed away by hurricanes, while "Eternal Flame" by the Bangles plays in the background. Overall, the restaurant has a terrific ambiance with dark brown, Asian-inspired paneling, and darkly-lit overtones, with the dining area a combination of table seating and lounge-like booth seating with linen-like cushions, and lots and lots of plants. They have a nice bar area toward the back of the restaurant, with access to an outdoor patio to enjoy drinks with a view of the intercoastal to the right. Once we had our server assigned to the table, the service was excellent. She made sure we had what we needed with cocktails, answers regarding items from the dinner menu, and making sure we were happy with our experience. Kicking off with cocktails, their Palm Beach south side drink special was a magical blast of mixology goodness, while the Blueberry Old Fashioned brought this synergy of a culinary experience to a head. They do cocktails very well at Proper Grit. This set the stage for the exquisite lobster and short rib cavatelli, which brought me to a place of culinary wonderment and magical enlightenment between the tantalizing flavors of the buttery lobster and the savory short rib. I had room for dessert so I enjoyed the banana foster that was made with fresh banana bread that made me jump for joy without the need for a Chips Ahoy. The ice cream was a creamy and satisfying complement to the warm and soft banana bread. I would return in a heartbeat with my wife to this place. I go to the cafe there for coffee a few times a week. very pet friendly. sometimes they give my fur baby bacon. everyone is so sweet and treats me and my dog wonderfully. staff is so personable. ALL of the staff....im terrible with names and wish I could name everyone! jimena (hope I spelled that right) was a newer addition to the coffee bar....shes always trying new drinks, seems extremely organized, very sweet and professional. I see her as well as other staff members to be a true asset to that place and the reason why I go there 3-4 times a week. Ambiance is on point Amd I will often go there and sit by the faux fireplace with my Coffee and do Some work on my computer. They have plenty of seating, but be aware because it is a hotel restaurant, it is attached to the lobby. Definitely is a spot to check out if you are staying at the hotel or in the area, and I've heard they have a great brunch. I stayed for a couple of nights and went for happy hour, they do have discounts, but outside of happy hour, the food and drink are quite expensive. You are definitely paying the price of being at a hotel, especially one as exclusive as The Ben. The food and drink options that I got were absolutely delicious period the corn and crab fritters were my favorite. As was the bruschetta, and I also tried the cucumber martini, so yummy. Sit at the bar and you'll receive great service, definitely check it out during happy hour. Let me start by saying the hotel looks absolutely stunning--modern and retro at the same time, while still maintaining an original, classic hotel feel. Had an ok stay at The Ben hotel but the Proper Grit was superior. The staff is amazing, warm and attentive. Cajon is a gem of a human, get his section if you can! The happy hour is a phenomenal value (albeit some dishes were not always available). The cocktails are top tier and the food is high quality and well prepared. I tried a few cocktails, the HH snapper tacos (excellent), the hot chicken and waffles (pass) and the smash burger (expert execution!). I would not order the hot chicken and waffles dish due to the chicken falling flat in seasoning and juiciness. Everything else is worthy. Smash patty is thicker than avg. and perfectly cooked with a nice crisp. The meat is quality. Everything was so fresh! The space is charming and warm and well decorated. We had a great Proper tea experience with our server Gorkem. Although our experience got off to a rough start with the parking situation during summer fest. We had to call the restaurant and the manager had to come out to speak to valet and get everything situated. The restaurant was designed impeccably and the table presentation was superb. We were greeted by Gorkem with the warmest hospitality ,he was very accommodating and making sure my 2 year old daughter was part of the experience as well. The tea selection is outstanding, I opted for the decaf tea which had a subtle vanilla flavor and my mother in law had the earl grey. We loved the touch of the sand clocks to select our level of steep. The course started of with warm biscuits accompanied by jam and cream. Best part about this restaurant is the customer service and the ambiance! Beautiful decor, dimly lit, and upscale; plentiful seating both inside and outside. Joylene was our waitress and was a doll; very friendly, fun, and helpful. We enjoyed her charisma and she was a pleasure to be around. The food was just average, a little underwhelming (reasonably priced though). I tried the crab & sweet corn fritters, blue cheese wedge salad, and the lobster & short rib cavatelli. The fritters were fluffy, and tasted similar to a crab cake combined with a hush puppy; I liked the sweet chipotle aioli drizzled over them. The pasta was cooked al dente but it lacked any real flavor. The chunks of lobster were impressively large, but there was way too much short rib (overpowered the flavor of the lobster). I would come back (since I live in the area) and sit at the bar (seemed to be the popular spot). I would definitely order something else here though- there are enough dishes and variety on the menu to venture out and see if other entrees have more flavor! read more

I honestly didn't have high hopes for a restaurant inside a hotel. I was worried the food would be small portions but everything we ordered was really tasty! The restaurant itself and hotel is so beautiful! Whoever designed this space did an incredible job. We visited for Christmas Eve with my parents and were sat at a table that had a couch for the chairs. Our server was helpful while we looked over the menu and offered recommendations. I opted for the Proper Burger, $19 that came with fries. We also tried the Cast Iron Salmon, $28 that included a large portion of orzo. I was impressed with the overall presentation and I like how it was topped with olives and prosciutto. The last dish we tried was the Lobster and Short Rib Cavatelli, $32. I was surprised with the generous portion of this entree, large pieces of lobster, plenty of short rib and lots of pasta. When the bill came they did overcharge us for our bottle of Malbec but quickly corrected the bill. Overall a solid 4 stars! It was a great experience, good food and pleasant service! read more

Went tonight for dinner. My husband booked it on line. There was a question if it was for a special occasion and he responded that it was my birthday. Anyway was quite disappointed with the food and timing. Ordered an appetizer and within 5 minutes the entree came out. Mentioned to the waiter and he apologized. The food was not worthy of the hype and price. The staff from hostess to valet were very accommodating but the food was subpar. Oh in the end they didn't even bring up my birthday. We have been to proper Grit many times and have always enjoyed the ambiance, food and service. Last night was disappointing. After waiting 20 minutes, we went to the hostess to ask for a server. Eventually, the waitress arrived. We ordered still water . After serving the bottled water, she took our order. Besides the order taking way too long to arrive at the table, we were eventually served our salad, appetizers, and main courses ALL at once! I normally do not do hotel restaurants but wanted to try this one as good food is pretty hard to find in our area and we had two other couples with us. Welp, I came away disappointed. Ordered the ribeye medium rare and it came out medium and a bit fatty for the price point. Had the fries as a side order and they were run of the mill frozen bar food fries. Drinks were good. Our waiter keep getting items incorrect for our table and the ambiance was probably the best part of the meal.
