Unlike other places they give you one long piece of fish instead of a few smaller pieces. The batter is so nice and lightly crispy (made by hand), delicious and tender fish inside. The fries are solid but nothing amazing but that's ok they should not overshadow the fish. Nestled in the small town of Bainbridge Island, close to the ferry dock is this great fish and chips place. Service - they managed my expectations and delivered to us great food and really took care of us. Told us it would take 45 minutes for our food, but really only took 15 minutes. And they were apologetic to the fact that we wanted to try the fish and chips, only to find out they were sold out for the day. They gave us other suggestions and it worked just as well, if not better in our favor. Food- we ordered the chowder of the day, which was a seafood cream based chowder, supposed to have been potatoes, but I could've sworn I had more fish and clams than potatoes (not a bad thing). We got the fish sandwich, the fried fish on this thing was huge, the sauce and the arugula truly complimented the flavor. The lobster roll was decadent, but not heavy. And of course the chips (fries) had a good bite to them and thick cut, not soggy at all! The place was packed and busy, with the bussers doing their best to keep up with the demand. We cleared our table of the previous patrons, and the staff were there to wipe our table down. We went on Memorial Day, so it was expected to be busy, but manageable. Pretty small space but they managed to fit a decent amount of seating. The employees are constantly zooming by because they are so busy. My wife accidentally left her credit card in the women's restroom and when we realized it and went back the cashier remembered us and said she was thinking of ways to notify us that someone had turned it in. I wanted to give this a 2.5. I almost gave it 3 stars for the sake of fairness, but after writing all of this, I realized this place needs more scrutiny. To begin with, why is this very busy restaurant nestled between so many empty parking lots reserved for OTHER establishments? It's confusing and the fitness center next door does not need that many parking spaces. Plus, I thought I was only stopping by for a quick pickup after I placed my order online. It was not quick. First, I had to wait in line at the cash register for my pickup order. It wasn't a big deal, but there were a lot of people in front of me and they were all looking at menus and placing orders when they got to the front of the line. I just wanted to figure out where to pick up my order. As it turns out, their only cash register is also their online order pickup spot. So to contextualize this, I arrived at my estimated pickup time 30 minutes after I placed my order, waited another 10 minutes in line and was told by the cashier that my order would be another 25 minutes. I sat and waited. 25 minutes go by... I stand in line (again) to check in with staff to make sure they know I'm still there... My order is ready another 15 minutes later. The whole time I was there, I was uncomfortable and anxious. It felt like I was in the way because the restaurant is so small and I had to jump through hoops to be acknowledged by the staff. The interactions I did have were quite cold, which really heightened the awkwardness of the tiny atmosphere. Again, it's way too small to be as busy as it is. It's not feng shui or welcoming, and you kind of feel like you're intruding no matter where you sit or stand. The food was not worth waiting for either. The British fish was mushy; the batter around it looked brown but was wet mush and cold fish underneath. The fries were limp, placid, flavorless. The fried oysters were also a wet, mushy, unpleasant, mostly-oyster-poop mess. My husband had the fish tacos and was more confused by the fries/cole slaw combo than he thought he would be? Despite the heaping pile of moisture-absorbing fried potatoes, the tacos were wet and completely falling apart. Nothing we tried was seasoned very well or... at all? I'd consider going here again if the vibes weren't so off-putting or if the food were better, but I just can't get past the subpar quality of either of those things to make it worth my time or money. The Good: A classic Bainbridge joint right off the ferry, this is the spot if you want a solid, no-frills fish and chips eating experience. Fish was extremely tender and battered to perfection. Interior was spacious and full of natural light from the large windows, and the outdoors seating seems perfect for warmer weather. Staff were very lovely and had no problem with us requesting extra sauces and dishes for sharing. The (not quite) Bad: The prices seemed high for what you get--$15 for two tacos, and $17 for f&c. Yes, the portions for the latter are big, but the fries are doing the heavy lifting there. I do not mind paying a premium for well sourced ingredients in general, but there is not much inherent flavor in the battered fish and I was really piling on the malt vinegar and hot sauce. I suppose that holds true to its British ancestry (sorry to any Br*tish people reading this), but I found myself wishing I was tasting something more interesting. The Ugly: BE CAREFUL and check all of your dishes for residue! There was crusted leftover food in my bowl and a lipstick stain on my glass. There's no table service so I get that it's on me to notice these things, but the fact that it happened twice to one person is troubling.
