Excellent! Why am I just stopping in this amazing place? The brisket is very much like I had on a recent trip to Texas. My new local favorite!

I have been trying so called bbq places all over the tri cities and I believe I have found a winner. What a gem. I had the brisket burger with jalapeños and carmelized onions. My side was collard greens. All I can say without extensive elaboration is, flavor overload on both items. My friend had a pulled pork sandwich and smoked Mac and cheese. She proclaimed it to be the second best she has ever had. She's from Texas so that says volumes. We finished off with homemade banana pudding. OMG!!! Stop wasting your time fooling your tastebuds into believing these other bbq places are good. There is a new sheriff in town and it's Project BBQ.

Holy BBQ Batman. had the ribs and brisket and both were simply amazing. the cornbread casserole was really unique. the Mac and cheese was spot on. the slaw was perfect. Must find you are in Johnson City, TN.

Project Burger with about 2 inches of meat.

Located on North Roan street in the old Dixie BBQ building, if you know barbecue you'll find it easily. Otherwise, it's well lit from the street and easy to find. Parking is pretty good for a smallish lot. Make sure you turn in from Roan though. The adjacent side street has no entrance to the parking lot. There are spaces adjacent to the building as well as across a travel lane. There are additional diagonal spaces along the outside of the lot. I believe there was at least one handicapped space near the entrance door. As you reach the entrance, check out the specials board on the sidewalk. I was disappointed they were out of burnt ends, but they apparently sell out quickly. Walking in, there is a bar with seating on the left and dining on the right. Since you order at the bar for take-out it can get crowded at the door. The seating area is a combination of tables and booths. It's not spacious but is well lit and does not look crowded. I was greeted very quickly after I entered and placed my order. I was hesitant to order the Project Burger ($18 with one side), partially because I have an issue paying more than $10 for a burger anywhere, but since the burger includes a brisket patty, sliced brisket, and pork, I gave it a chance. I selected the bbq beans as my side. My order took no more than 10 minutes to arrive. I was asked what sauce I wanted. I can't remember for sure, but think it was a smoky/ spicy version. My concern about the Project burger was dispelled as soon as I opened the foil wrapper. The meat was piled into about a two inch layer on a very nice bun. The meat was tender without being mushy, and the bun held up the entire meal. You could actually eat it like a burger, assuming you could open your mouth wide enough to take a bite. Even though the pork was very good, it was overshadowed by the exceptional brisket. I added the provided sauce but was underwhelmed. The sauce was not spicy to me at all. Luckily, the meat does not need anything added to provide complete enjoyment. The side of bbq beans were quite good. They were a bit thin, but had pieces of meat included. They were a nice accompaniment. Based on the number of people eating there as well as coming in to pick up or place orders, Project BBQ is not an undiscovered treasure, so make sure you join the rest of the bbq lovers and make your way there.

Project BBQ is located near the animal shelter and Hyundai dealership! They have limited hours, with only being open on Thursdays for fajitas, and Friday and Saturday for their delicious Texas style BBQ! Instead of ordering at the table, you go up to the bar counter to place your order and pay, then take your number with you and seat yourself. It does get a little busy, but there is a small bar, indoor seating, and outdoor seating available and the staff is pretty quick about getting tables cleaned off for new guests. All of the meats are served by the 1/2 pound, so do keep that in mind when ordering entrées and whatnot. Aside from their bbq and sandwiches, a few unique must try items here are definitely the coleslaw (love that it's vinegar based!), smoked Mac & cheese, and the cornbread casserole (OMG). Like a lot of the other bbq joints here, they have table sauces - a sweet bbq sauce and a sweet vinegar based bbq sauce. I always opt for the vinegar bbq, but theirs was a still too sweet for me. We finished our meal with banana pudding which was a bit too sweet for my taste, but perfect to satisfy any sweet tooth. For drinkers, there is a small selection of beers on tap as well as fountain sodas and water. I definitely recommend including Project BBQ in your weekend plans to come out and support this small business!

When you walk in you are greeted and order at the counter. Make sure to tip them because they do work despite ordering at the counter. They bring the food out and check on you constantly. They want to make sure you are happy. The food was delicious. The brisket was tender and flavorful no sauce needed. The sausage was a jalapeño cheese sausage. It had a kick. The greens were better than average. I think they were flavored with brisket. The cornbread casserole was moist and well done. Not pictured the coleslaw which was not a cream base but more of a vinegar base. It surprisingly worked and was really good, notice it is not pictured. The chicken and pulled pork were just as good as the other. The smoked mac and cheese was different and tasty. The beans had a good flavor. This is casual dining and they do have a drive thru but it is high quality all the way.

Wow, this place is worth the hype! We managed to snag some burnt ends (which run out quickly)! We also got ribs and brisket. Definitely the best barbecue I've had - I normally don't like brisket but this was so melt in your mouth tender. The ribs had a great smoke ring and bark, but was still tender! Burnt ends were crispy and intensely flavored. The TN heat sauce could've used more heat for my liking, but I really liked the vinegar based sauce. Loved the vinegar based coleslaw too - perfect for cutting through the richness of the meat. Banana pudding was also tasty but very low on bananas. You order at the front and then get a number to put on your table.

JC is quickly becoming a destination for world class BBQ and nestled unobtrusively off the side of Roan street near the Okalona exit off interstate 26 is Project Barbecue. The smoke depth was perfect as was the texture and marbling. The sauces are excellent and served on the side so you can flavor to taste. The meat is served unadulterated allowing you set your own experience. Well worth the price the portions are generous. Take the time to visit this jewel of the Appalachians and see for your self that JC is on the map for some of the best barbecue anywhere. read more

Project BBQ has a new location on S. Roan! If you haven't eaten there before, you are in for a treat! I had their pulled pork sandwich and it was seriously amazing. It had a nice soft buttery roll piled high with succulent pulled pork with lots of pork bark! They have three great sauces to choose from, and all their sides are delicious. My friend and I decided to do a little tasting and got small portions of the barbecue beans, smoked mac & cheese, cornbread casserole, and coleslaw to try and they were all so yummy! We also split a banana pudding dessert but we are both too full from dinner so more to come on their nana pud! Lol :) Definitely worth the calories! We ordered take out but the location is warm and cozy and the staff is super nice and friendly! read more

I love BBQ. Always have. Always will. That being said, I've had the opportunity to eat BBQ in many different places. They all seem a little different. And of course every weekend I'm wanting to BBQ at home. I'm nationally known (two states) and I've won awards for "Most Average BBQ" So I'm the guy you probably invite over to eat but not to grill. :) When i go to most BBQ restaurants, they usually always say "Hickory Smoked BBQ" or they use "smoke" in their name. So when I eat their BBQ, I expect some smoke flavor. Until today.. i have never had smoky BBQ. Man, i need to take some lessons from whoever does this there. My wife had the ribs which looked amazing. She takes her first bite and has this look come on her face.. and if you're thinking what I'm thinking then yeah.. it was one of those kind of looks only this time it wasn't me causing that look... it was the incredible BBQ. So I can't be 100% sure because i've had millions of BBQ meals in my lifetime but.... as far as i can recall? This is the best BBQ i have ever had in my life. Service was amazing. The place is clean. Best BBQ in Tri-Cities, hands down. As a former Texas resident, this place does Texas BBQ justice and then some. The brisket is the best I've found anywhere around, compares very well to Franklin BBQ in Austin or Cooper's in Llano. My first time here I ordered the Ben Franklin special and it fed our entire family for three meals. Everything was delicious. Ecstatic that this place is here, we will be regulars. read more

This is, by far, not TX bbq! Being from East TX, this was a miserable experience. Just take TX off the sign and it will be decent if you need bbq. It may be ok bbq for JC but definitely not from TX. Take off that coleslaw because that is not the way you have it in TX and add potato salad. And unless you're from fa west TX definitely no queso so just take TX off the sign and it may be kinda decent. The customers you have just don't cook at home is all.. read more

Top quality BBQ. After moving to JC we asked multiple people where to get good local food, and half a dozen told us to come here. So we did, and it was freakin fabulous. Make sure you order early because they do occasionally run out of sides as the night goes on. Met the founder. He's a good dude. read more

I ordered the three meat. Ribs, brisket and pulled pork with bbq baked beans and coleslaw. My fault for not checking my order. Instead of giving me the brisket they gave me the sausage (the sausage was good) but the pulled pork was throat dry. The ribs was also good. The bbq baked beans was giving more of an onion and bell pepper taste. The coleslaw had way to much vinegar. I'm going them 3 stars because I'm going to give them another try because they just opened. read more

Best bbq restaurant in Johnson City imo. I get carry about usually once a week from there. Usually go with the project burger (learned about the smoke ring this way) or smack N cheese sandwich. If you get a side, do yourself a favor and go with the beans. They are elite and probably the best beans I've had in my life. Recommend going before 630, as I've heard they run out of certain meats to demand. Carry out is pretty easy, just call and drive by the window. My only complaint is that they auto include sauces or always ask if you want sauces when you go through drive through window. Sometimes if you have other people pick up the food for you, you'll be left without sauce which can suck. read more

We were told about PROJECT BBQ by our neighbor. He raved about the food so we decided to give it a try. We recently moved here for retirement, previously we lived in Texas for 20 years and everyone knows Texas is known for its BBQ, but I can truly say that Project BBQ hands down knows how to do BBQ right. Fabulous! We tried brisket, ribs, turkey, pulled pork, sausage, collards, slaw, and beans. Everything was delicious! This was the first vinegar based cole slaw we have EVER liked....it was crunchy, refreshing, and the vinegar flavor was mild, not at all overwhelming. It went perfectly with all of the meats. And that little pile of pickled onions they put on the plate.... chef's kiss! They make the sausage in house, pickle their own delicious onions, and even freshly grate and smoke the queso! My husband liked everything too, even the onions and he doesn't eat onions. Project BBQ has got definitely something great going on here and you're missing out if you haven't tried it. I will say that this bbq has a different flavor than we are used to, as it should...because it's Texas style and we aren't in Texas lol. But after the first couple of bites, you just forget every other bbq you've ever eaten and it gets more delicious with every bite. Alex was awesome and talked with my husband about something they both love to do...smoke meat (among other things). Thanks Project BBQ for a great meal in a great atmosphere. So much was fabulous!! The food was great. The staff was amazing. Fast service! Quick to fill our beverages. Today we got to test their fajitas. Chicken and steak were both yummy. Family style fixings that were fresh and delish! This was our first visit but we will be back for for the bbq. Great family run restaurant who made us feel welcome. We came in yesterday (Saturday). The brisket was excellent! The sides and presentation, however, need work. No Texan that I know of (I am a 6th generation Texan) eats chopped beef brisket without a thick slice of Texas 1015, or at least a Vadalia onion and sliced pickles. The beans should be Pinto Beans, not pork & beans. Even Appalachian Americans eat Pinto Beans! Perhaps you are catering to the influx of people form California or New York, but as a TEXAN, I find it disrespectful for you to tell folks this is how REAL TEXAS BarBQ is served. Sorry, you missed the mark. read more

However, the restaurant is only open from Thursday-Saturday and frequently runs out of ribs and other items on the menu, during peak dinner hours. The pulled pork at Project BBQ is absolutely delectable. It's tender, flavorful and nuanced. On the other hand, the ribs leave something to be desired. While the flavor is there, the meat on the ribs is quite sparse. In fact, I've never had ribs with less meat. Overall, Project BBQ is a mixed bag. While it offers delicious, nuanced BBQ and great service, its limited hours and tendency to run out of ribs, rather early in the evening, can be a bit of a letdown. Hidden BBQ Gem in Johnson City! My grandson and I were in Johnson City for the day when we stumbled across a place called Project BBQ--and let me tell you, it was fantastic. The BBQ was top-notch, and the variety of sauces was just the icing on the (smoky, delicious) cake. We shared the Project Sampler, which came loaded with brisket, chicken, pulled pork, sausage, and ribs--every bite was flavorful and tender. The sides were just as impressive: mac & cheese, baked beans, and coleslaw, all perfectly done. Plenty of food for the two of us, and not a crumb left behind. My husband smokes some serious meat on his wood burning smoker but after eating here he said he needs to up his game. Best BBQ, best price and best service. We both had the platter with Brisket, Ribs, Pulled Pork, Smoke Mac N Cheese and Corn Casserole. For dessert, the Banana Pudding. It was all delicious! We loved all of the bbq sauces too. If we lived closer my husband said he'd never have to fire up the smoker and buy the oak because we'd eat here all of the time! read more
