Just happened upon this place while we were traveling and WOW! The bbq is amazing. So flavorful and smoothly smoky. (My husband says I'm a bbq snob and he's not wrong.) The mustard greens very vinegary with a hint of heat, just perfect. My husband loved the baked beans which were thick and sweet. The Alabama bbq sauce was the best we've ever had and the regular bbq sauce had just right amount of sweet. We've traveled all over the country, and this is hands-down one of the best BBQ spots we've ever visited. The food was incredible, and the service was even better. Our drinks were never empty, and every staff member we met was kind, welcoming, and genuinely warm. It's clear this is a family-owned place that takes pride in what they do. This was a good little meal during my 3 days in Kingsport. It was priced pretty well also. I waited until my last day to try it since I had just eaten a burger the day before my trip. I ordered the bacon cheeseburger with a loaded baked potato and sweet tea. Everything was pretty tasty as they put cheddar on the burger and the patty is hand-formed, which is my preference. I would have preferred red onions in the burger since they're raw, and better-quality lettuce than shredded iceberg lettuce, but for the price, it's a good deal. The burger is about 1/3lb. The baked potato has real bacon slices that have been chopped up. My potato was a little overdone and had several tough overcooked areas I couldn't eat. Otherwise, no other issues. Having had to travel to Kingsport for a Dr visit, I wanted to eat somewhere before returning home. Several friends and coworkers had previously suggested I try The Shack on Ft Henry Dr.. Since moving here three years ago, I have tried several bbq places but none met my tastebuds even half way. Usually the bbq was dry shredded meat that I had to soak in bbq sauce for any flavor. Thus, my reluctance. Throwing caution to the wind, I pulled into The Shack parking lot and said a prayer before entering. This place is very unassuming as it's on a lower level under some other businesses. There is an outside deck but it's only view is the highway and parking lot. Let's move on to the experience inside. It's appropriately decorated and feels very basic bbq ambiance. I received a menu and loved all the choices available. I chose a shredded pork sandwich combo. My sides were greens and baked beans. The sandwich was worth every penny! In fact, it was worth more than I was charged. So juicy, no fatty chunks and the flavor was superb. I could have eaten two it was so good. Note: one was big enough to fill me up. I'm not sure why but my experience is that most bbq places don't put a lot of thought or emphasis on their side dishes. The Shack falls into this category. It's the only reason I didn't give them 5 stars. Be creative and original with your sides! Jalapeño cornbread, Mexican street corn, zucchini bites, etc. would be nice additions. Anyway, try em out and leave your creative side dish suggestions with your tip. read more

I was told the place was pretty good, so I decided to order 50 wings for takeout. The online menu showed 50 wings for $36.49. Went in and ordered and was presented with a receipt for $54 and change. I brought the discrepancy to the employee who all of a sudden acted like he couldn't speak English. He did manage to unapologetically attempt to point out that there's probably lots of restaurants whose online menu is incorrect. As if that made it okay. On top of that, I was supposed to get 5 selections of dipping sauce and they only gave me 3. It turned out that 3 was enough, however, because the wings were about the smallest I've ever seen. Some of these local places are good, but The Shack is not one of them. Prepare to be disappointed. read more

I'm at "The Shack" for a second time and ordered the same bacon cheeseburger with bacon cheese fries that I ordered last time (gotta see if their food is consistent, right)! Well, I have to say that this burger was just as good or better as my burger the last time I was here (see my previous review)! Nice and juicy with lots of cheese and bacon! For the price of hardly more than a McDonalds... you can get something 100 times better, and almost just as fast! The wait staff was great also. I sat outside in the breezy shade, but hLevi still came out twice to check on me to see if I needed anything! The person at the next table had a shredded smoked chicken sandwich that was so huge that I had to interrupt them just to ask what it was! The wait staff was bubbling with personality and they served us as good or better than any we've ever had. They were A++; could not possibly been better. The owner was just as great. I have had some bad BBQ in the Kingsport TN area but yesterday at the Shack I ordered the "pulled" pork sandwich plate and it was Horrible. Probably the worst I've had in the area. Tasted like it had been cooked in the oven a few days ago with absolutely zero smoke flavor and was very greasy. The meat was finely chopped with crunchy bits in it. We picked this place based on the reviews but unfortunately we don't have anything good to say. Dirty table, poor customer service, overpriced frozen/can food. I can buy those same frozen chicken tenders at Costco. The "Homemade Chili" for the Taco Salad looked like it came out of a can of dog food. I still can't wrap my head around the 4.5 reviews. I just hope the dirty tables and the disgusting, trashy menus aren't a reflection of what the kitchen looks like! We stopped here on a whim during a multi-day Drive and were so pleasantly surprised at how wonderful this place is! From the moment we got out of our car, the staff couldn't have been more welcoming (they opened the door and shouted a welcome our way). The kids got to play corn hole on their stage while we waited for our food. The wings were astounding - crispy, hot, and perfectly sauced. The pork sandwich plate with baked beans and coke slaw was hands-down some of the best BBQ and accompaniments I've ever had. Great staff. Super clean. Amazing food. Arghhh!! I remember leaving a review here shortly after I visited, and when my experience was still as clear as day as I typed in an really nice description! Not sure what happened.... But let's try again but in a way less detailed review. Not because I don't want to, just that I can't remember the small details considering I go eat at so many places. But from what I DO remember, I had an awesome experience and it's definitely somewhere I'd visit again when I'm in the area. The ambience is more like a bar than a restaurant. Especially a BBQ restaurant. But that's a great thing because they have a great selection of beers and their food is superb! They definitely know what they're doing, that's for sure!! Fast and extremely friendly service really tops it off, and that's why I feel they are deserving of that 5 star rating. One last thing. I know we're in East TN so there are TONS of good BBQ joints around, but I do feel that The Shack is a step above most. Highly recommended. read more
