This is our second visit to this lovely restaurant. The first, left me thinking about it for months despite a hiccup with our order. Both times we sat at the bar with polar opposite experiences. Our initial visit the bartender insisted on not writing down the order. My boyfriend was cutting carbs and asked that the burger without a bun and with a substitution of salad instead of the fries. I am patient but the wait time for our food was a little ridiculous. After the starters were finally there we inhaled them because they were so delicious. Another half hour passed and my BF's burger arrived. . . With a bun. They sent it back and we waited yet another 45 minutes for the correct order to come out. As an apology they brought us an order of fries despite us specifically asking for no fries. All in all it was delicious and I really enjoyed the food. Trip two we had the most wonderful bartender. The wait again was suspiciously long for our appetizers and after about an hour our gnocchi finally arrived. The bartender explained they they overcooked it the first time and had to re-cook it. Unfortunately all of the food was average with the gnocchi being some of the worst I have ever had. Our bartender kindly took care of a drink for us, and while much appreciated, visiting a place twice with an order boogered up both times left a really sour taste in my mouth. Also, though I know they have no control over this both of our visits there were sobbing children. The baby I was sympathetic for; the toddler running around screaming should have been addressed. The space is beautiful and if you feel like gambling for a hit or miss go for it. read more

The food and atmosphere was great. Our waiter had the worst attitude I have ever seen. It's almost like he couldn't have been bothered with us. Every time we asked for something it was to another waiter and not our own waiter. Very disappointing. read more

First and last time. Awful. Host was very rude and unaccommodating. Asked for an outdoor table because it was so cold and loud indoors. None available. Okay fine. Me: "How long would the wait be?" Him: "No idea. It's first come first serve." Me: "It's very cold in here. Not sure we're gonna stay if we can't wait for a table outdoors." He had no response. No outward response. Just let us walk away. How about some training for your staff, Primrose? Perhaps something like: "Have a drink at the bar and we'll see what we can do. Maybe a little while, but will certainly let you know as soon as one becomes available." Nothing. Plus, we had a reservation. My friend wanted to stay so we got a table indoors. Literally 5 min after we sat down, a table outdoors became available. No word from the host and immediately he sat down a walk-in group. Food is just meh and very pricey. For the kind of money they charge, I would expect much better welcoming service and certainly better food. My steak was inedible. Two mounds of uninspired lumps flanked by a total of 5 french fry end pieces. Meat was chewy outside and undercooked inside. Gross. And Expensive. I filled up on bread. Won't be back. read more

Wow. Fabulous! I and all the members of my group highly recommend this. We were a party of 6 and everything we had was excellent. We had the pork loin, the ox tail, the burger and the steak. I had a delicious Pinot noir. The grilled vegetable appetizer (cabbage and carrots) is a must try. It's a cute place with lots of charm. I also appreciated the digital wall art. Overhyped and under seasoned. Tiny portions when it comes to the fish and the side dishes. The whole chicken is amazing but again could benefit from spice or sauce - anything to pull it past just a moist chicken. Brunch is much better than dinner. read more

If I lived in the neighborhood, I might give it another chance. I don't, though, so I likely won't go back. The food was not great, especially for the price point. They mixed up our reservation and seemed to not know how to remedy it. I get it, it happens, but when we finally worked out a solution, we were rushed to order because the kitchen was closing, though it was still brunch time (I guess it closed down midday until dinner). Great new spot in the neighborhood! This is a new restaurant, so it's always safe to expect a few hiccups with the food or service, but the experience at Primrose was flawless. It was dinner, during the holidays with the family (wife & kids) and even the parents. We were seated quickly and the whole experience was outstanding. The wines were great, my wife got a cocktail (maybe a Prosecco punch?) which was really tasty and even my parents were able to order off the menu. The French Onion soup was amazing. Everyone enjoyed their meal and we even took home some leftovers. I'm excited to eat here again in the future. read more

Primrose has been a go-to restaurant before and during Covid 19. The staff is super friendly, their food and wine list are top notch, not to mention some interesting craft cocktails, and they have adapted to service with a smile during the pandemic. The interior of Primrose feels like you are transported to Paris with food to match. The restaurant has easily adapted to open air serving as the large doors and windows open on two sides of the restaurant to large sidewalk space where there's plenty of room for tables. Lately with the cold, they have installed 3 sided tents with picnic type tables, strung lighting and decor that makes for a lovely, cozy experience. It was so cold this week, we opted to dine indoors, and were the only diners inside the spacious main area. The service was excellent without being overly intrusive. This week they offered a pop up called La union kitchen takeover where the chef and his team prepared amazing dishes from salvador and mexico. They plan some other pop ups in February and I can't wait! read more

Went here for dinner on a Friday night. A little loud inside, but they have a nice outdoor patio that's quiet. Service was good, but slow. Food was great. Chicken entree and the burger were both excellent. A laid back place away from the heavy DC crowds. read more

First of all the place looks good but honestly looks like a dozen other places that have recently opened in D.C. It's obvious they are using the same interior designer that these other places are using. It looks good but this look is starting to get redendunt and I'm getting tired of it. Food was too salty, is overpriced and portions are too small. Wine list is also very small, too small. Unless they change the wine list weekly you would get tired of this place after maybe a couple of visits. Service was too casual for what you pay. If I'm paying fine dining prices I expect fine dining service. They're trying to sell hype and image here. This may work in D.C. and I guess Primrose is technically in D.C. but Brookland residents won't support this place very long. I doubt this place lasts very long. read more

This is one of my favorite places in DC. The ambiance is amazing! I love the attention to detail at this place-- from the decor to the plates and utensils. Everything is so chic and cute! I always get the egg toast and a side salad. Even if it's not on the menu, ask if you could order biscuits-- their biscuits and the spread are AMAZING! It's one of my favorite things to order there. Food is consistently great--which can be surprisingly hard to expect in popular DC restaurants. This place is so good that it's the first place I take out of town friends. Every single person has loved it here. As a side note: I typically go for brunch on weekends and never had trouble finding parking. read more

Cute restaurant, nice atmosphere. The food was good though not spectacular. This restaurant adds on a 20% "service fee" which I would interpret as including the gratuity for the server. Apparently not. The server (who was not particularly attentive, disappeared for a long period of time and we had to ask someone else for our check) rather rudely informed me that the service charge was NOT the gratuity and the fee was shared amongst the staff and paid his $15 salary. I felt pretty much shamed into adding a gratuity. More concerning, I expressed my concerns to the restaurant via FB with no response. read more

The food is good and so are the drinks, but the thing that is really remarkable about this place is it's ownership and staff. I've been making the rounds of all the new-ish wine bars in DC (La Jambe, Dio, Tyber Creek) and Primrose was my most recent stop. This place is AMAZING. I gasped when I walked in and saw the beautiful bar and light fixtures - the ambiance cannot be beat. We didn't have a chance to try any of the food, but I was seated at the bar next to the kitchen and everything coming out looked delicious. We tried three or four different cocktails, and they were all excellent - our favorite was the Le Mistral that came with a little bundle of herbs. The location is somewhat out-of-the-way for folks who don't live in Brookland, but I'll be making the trip again sometime very soon. read more

Went here for my birthday dinner. Was recommended by a friend. Everything was quite wonderful. The place is beautiful, starting with the sweet mosaic at the door. The service was nice. Let's see, what did I have. The French Onion Soup which was recommended, and it was excellent. I haven't had it for a long time but the subtle sweetness of the mushroom broth brought me back. Had steak frites just because I had to. It was marvelous, with this wonderful crusty taste on the edges. Frites, perfect. Riche had lovely snap peas for an app and they were very tasty. Had pot au chocolate for my b-day dessert and quite honestly it was only so-so, almost like it had sat around for a while. But the rest of the experience sustained its 5 stars. read more

We've been dying to check out Primrose since it opened last November. Reservations are hard to get on weekends, so we ended up coming on a Wednesday night. The interior is super cute as previous reviews have mentioned. It's open and airy and a lot of the light comes from the candles lit on each table. We got seated and got our menus - although our server didn't come back around to take our orders for a little while after being seated. That was the kind of theme of our dinner - the service was really slow and our meals came out at a sort of agonizing pace. We ordered two appetizers - the artichokes and French onion soup. Artichokes were kind of bland, and the French onion soup was good but not great. Kudos to the cheese on the soup being perfectly crisped and gooey. We also got the burger and gnocchi. The gnocchi was my favorite part of the meal - delicious melt in your mouth gnocchi that wasn't starchy. The burger was good, but it almost seemed like it was missing something. I ordered a glass of wine and my boyfriend had two cocktails. He maintains the best part of the meal were the drinks - both of his cocktails were well balanced and deliciously smooth. I'd say that we had a nice evening out, but weren't blown away by the food. I think the only reason this place gets four stars is for their drinks. read more

So disappointed! It's hard for me to write negative reviews, especially when a restaurant has such a nice vibe and seems to be a popular spot. Unfortunately, the service and food were not up to par. My friend and I waited nearly an hour for our food to arrive without any explanation or apology for the wait. Other tables that came in after us received their food first. It's not like the restaurant was busy, either--there were only about 5-6 other occupied tables. I understand that things happen, but we would have appreciated a heads up. Overall, our service was slow and inattentive. Our food was lackluster--my dish was way too salty and my friend couldn't even finish her sandwich because of the salt. The portion-to-price ratio was absolutely ridiculous, as well. There are way better options in the area for a cheaper, tastier brunch. I would really like to give this place the benefit of the doubt--it clearly has potential--but I was very unsatisfied with our overall experience. read more

I had a WONDERFUL experience-food, service, everything-when I visited Primrose yesterday. I was dining with someone-started with their French onion soup. Spot-on. Both my dining partner and I ordered the steak frites. Primrose put a plate down in front of me that was simple and elegant-a small salad, my frites, and my steak. Earlier, my server asked if I wanted bearnaise or au poivre with my steak. I'll be honest-while I consider myself a well-rounded diner, I don't know what those sauces mean and I'm usually too embarrassed to ask. Our server was more than happy to explain, although he did (rightfully) chuckle a little bit. The meal was absolutely amazing. I don't think my plate required washing. Everything about it-perfectly cooked steak, light salad, crispy, crunchy fries (I dipped mine in my sauce)-was just...solid. They know what they are doing. We were running late for another engagement and asked for poached pears to go. No problem...they made it happen. A great meal, a great atmosphere, and the vibe of Brookland. Well done, Primrose. Really wanted to try this spot, but at the time I needed to use my phone/ the internet for business and I was informed after ordering that they didn't have "public WiFi". Although there were two different primrose WiFi options . Honestly kind of mind blowing that a restaurant in 2018 would deny a patron WiFi. Enjoyed our meal. Good service and decor. We were a party of 4 who started with a shared excellent tartine. Then ordered the whole chicken to share. Clearly a whole chicken is meant to shared by 2-4 people. Comes with 'a' side of fries and salad. Waitress was forthcoming that they weren't large. So we ordered extra salad. That salad appeared much larger than the one delivered with chicken, could have been the plating. The fries were so small what I would call single serving. We ordered another. At $50 the chicken sides should be large enough to serve at least 2. Wine is also on the pricey side. read more

I really love how Primrose is handling the virus. First, thanks to staff for setting out bug spray! Second, waitstaff stays inside while diners eat outside. I appreciate the protection for staff, and as a customer, it was nice to relax and not worry I was spreading anything to them while eating with my mask off. The food was great and so was the wine. Primrose is a gem and I'm so glad to see them going strong through a tough year AND working towards better living wages for their staff. I was beyond thrilled to get back there in person today. They have a great set up on the patio. They're staff is tremendous and their food is incredibly divine. Peter was the best and tolerated our social awkwardness - we hadn't been out to eat for over a year. He made the call for a round of biscuits (make sure you order a plate). My husband and I split the croque monsieur - so good. I wanted it all to myself but we were trying not to be gluttons. My mom order the shrimp and grits - I might even rank that higher than our dish. I watched with envy as a burger was whisked by our table to another patron. If you decide to venture out for brunch, do it and go here. Tomorrow looks like even better weather for it.
