    a sandwich cut in half

What gem of a spot. This family business is the real deal. A legitimate soup to nuts bakery. Want breads and baked products freshly made daily from start to finish, (short of a wheat field out back)? Want a variety of breads and or baked goods that the following entities thought were good enough to sell in their stores?: (Elwood Thompson, Wegman's, Food Lion, Kroger, Whole Foods, Harris Teeter, Fresh Market, & the Navy Exchanges in VA Beach!). Today I had a great sandwich to my liking, with the perfect amount of roast beef, ham, Swiss, mustard, on their delicious 9-grain bread, with dill pickles, lettuce, & tomato. Very pleased with the price as well. I also had a to go cup of soup, packaged by humans who care and don't want you spilling it all over. Nice touch! Keep your WAY SUB-par sammies made by Jimmy or even Mike, (btw, no one from NJ that I know, loves Jersey Mikes). I'd rather give my coin to this business for the quality. WELL DONE ROBYN & TEAM!!

First of all, we had awesome service here. We were greeted upon entry, our food was brought to our table with a smile and an "enjoy" and both ladies working made sure to tell us to have a nice day when we left. Not sure how any of that can be interpreted as bad customer service. Maybe there have been staffing changes since previous reviewers came here but everyone was well taken care of on my visit. I had the sandwich and soup combo. It's a cup or bowl (you choose) of soup, half a sandwich and a drink for far less than surrounding chain restaurants offering this type of pick two ($8.50). They had three soups of the day and I chose the cream of tomato. For those who don't already know, I am OBSESSED with tomato soup so my expectations were high. This was super creamy, warm and flavorful, meaning yes I will be back for it. I got a turkey sandwich with all the fixings on 9 grain and it wasn't the best sandwich I ever had but it was light and fresh and overall pretty tasty!

Delicious bread great for sandwiches at home. Love that they are healthy and locally made here in Midlothian. Easy to grab and go!

Loyalty card... it says 12 but the lady told me if you buy 6 loafs of bread or lunch you will get one free!

I've never used the bookmark feature of Yelp till this week, and one of the spots I bookmarked was Prairie Grain Bread. This is also the third new spot that I've been to this week. I wish I had more time to hang out when I got there but my electrician called me and said he was in the neighborhood (we are trying to get some new lighting out in so we want an estimate) so I literally had to run in and out with my 6 week baby boy. My first thought walking in was... Wow... the bread aroma was incredible. I seriously walked in and smelled fresh baked bread! It looks like a huge kitchen because that is literally what it is. They probably had 6 or so staff making bread. You could see heaps of bread dough sitting to rise from the yeast. It was pretty awesome since it was huge. I wish I took a pic of that but as I said I literally had to run in and out. I knew that Thursday was Banana Nut day based on pictures I saw on Yelp so that was what I decided to get. This would be great to come here to pick up bread for the holidays or anytime I'm in the mood to eat bread as it's super fresh. There were two loafs of Pumpkin Raisin and on Banana Nut when I got there. Made me wonder if people literally came in and bought a bunch... since I got there around 9:30 only 30 minutes after it opened. The lady running the cash register was super sweet... she gave me a loyal customer card... if you get 6 loafs of bread or lunch you will get one thing free. I tried the Banana Nut bread when I got home... it was delicious, not too sweet and very moist. One of the better Banana Nut Breads I have had other than making it myself. With tax it was $6... nice as it will serve for breakfast or even a sweet treat for the family the next couple days. All in all I was pleasantly surprised by Prairie Grain... It is definitely tucked away in the shopping center where the Food Lion/ Peking/Siam Paragon are.... but worth a trip if you are looking for bread. I will need to come back and try a lunch sandwich next time!

Interior from entry. Talk about an open kitchen!

Awesome bread! Simple but good sandwiches at reasonable prices. Perfect for lunch. Prairie Grain Bread Company is a small bakery that bakes their own whole-grain bread from natural ingredients and sells their bread in loaves, as sandwiches, and with soups. Their bread is simply amazing, and their website really sums it up best: "Trucks arrive each month with bags of red wheat from Montana. The wheat goes to the mill room where, behind closed doors, huge stones grind the flour each day. Two large commercial ovens run and bake about 1,000 loaves a day. We consider ourselves a micro-bakery." I arrived for a late lunch around 2pm on a Thursday after having spotted this place driving around looking for another eatery. Walking in for the first time is rather daunting, Prairie Grain is not a polished, insulted place like corporate bakery chain, you walk in to see a small counter, a few straightforward menu signs, all in the shadow of the much larger baking and work area in the back. It's the kind of place that defines "open kitchen". Their breads are baked daily, with steady breads that are made every day and daily specialty breads that rotate through on a weekly basis. They offer two breads to try, which is a great way to get an idea of just how good the bread is before you order it - you'll definitely be impressed. Sandwiches at the "deli" counter are very reminiscent of being at grandma's house: you get to pick a size, a bread, a meat, and cheese, any number of sauces and any number of toppings. Sandwiches are flat rate based on the size. You can also choose from fresh soups, coffee, and the more standard sodas and chips. I had a whole sandwich on herb bread with roast beef, cheddar, lettuce and tomato ($5+tax). The sandwiches are neatly, but simply, cut and served on trays or to-go - again think grandma's house. The cold cuts and veggies were fresh, but standard not diluting the quality of the bread but not adding to its awesomeness other than to make it a meal. The bottom line is simply, Prairie Grain Bread Company has excellent bread that they'll serve whole or as sandwiches, making it a great place to stop for lunch or on your way to or from work. The bread really is amazing and vastly outshines the old, overcooked bread many of us have come to expect from corporate "bakery" chains.

The 9-grain bread is amazing. The dinner rolls were amazing. The restaurant is bright and clean. My sandwich was sub par. The bread was great but the "veggie" sandwich was lettuce, tomato, pickles and sweet peppers. That is not a veggie. That is a lettuce sandwich. My biggest issue is the service. When I went to order the server pointed to a pad. Didn't say anything, just pointed to a pad (apparently I was supposed to magically know that I had to write my own ticket). No one smiled, no one said a word, thank you, nothing. There are other sandwich places and I will go there and be greeted and treated nicely and have a sandwich on bread that isn't as good, but I will still be happier.

Happened to be shopping in the area and I couldn't resist the amazing smell of fresh baked bread. Wandered in, without consulting Yelp, yikes, because I'm weak and who can resist that aroma. The shop can be easy to miss if you are not looking. It was like going back in time. Several lovely ladies were right there in the kitchen. They have reward cards for regular customers. When you approach the counter be sure to grab your order form because you need to fill it out yourself. This is very different, but it certainly must reduce errors. No frills here, just the real deal. Jams and jellies are also available. Later, I even noticed their products in Martin's grocery stores and a catering truck cruising around town. They had a February special, which was a cherry, chocolate loaf. Truthfully, I'm not really sure if it was a cake, brownie or bread, but who cares because it was to die for! It had fresh cherries in it and it was enough to serve eight people. I dressed it up for our special Valentine's dessert. Be sure to check out my photo! Yum! When I finally did consult Yelp, others did confirm what I had just discovered, thank goodness!

Oh my goodness, this place is phenomenal it is located in an industrial looking area which kind of worried me a bit considering I was looking for a bakery but I was pleasantly surprised walking in being greeted my Mrs. Joan and a beautiful case of sweets. She shared with me that she truly listens to her customers and is willing to custom make anything. Everything in the case is customizable you want a slice of cheesecake but want to add some strawberry crumble? She can do it for you, how about a strawberry crunch cake with chocolate sauce and chocolate crumble? You got it. I ended up grabbing a slice of strawberry crunch cake and strawberry cream pie (customized with some strawberry crumble on top). Both items were absolutely delicious but that cake was out of this world. It was moist with a perfect frosting ratio. Some cakes often have a large amount of frosting due to aesthetics and can be hard to enjoy due to being overpoweringly sweet. This cake was so good with its ratio I had the perfect bite each time. River City Chocolate is the true embodiment of a hidden gem, tucked away between some industrial looking buildings lies an amazing bakery with so much heart.
