Whenever I have stopped in, (which admittedly is not often), there is almost always someone who greets me fairly quickly and lets me know they are available to assist. On this latest visit I did have a question or two about a blazer I was looking at. The saleswoman was at the ready and was quite helpful. She let me know that even though the blazer was on sale already there was an additional 40% off. It was pricey to begin with but with both a sale price and the additional percentage off it became hard to resist...so I bought it. (I have been updating my seasonal blazer wardrobe over the past several months as I find blazers are often a great way to elevate an outfit and pull everything together.) I was also able to find a pretty gold belt. Alas, the belt was not on sale, and priced higher than I think it should have been but I think I will get a lot of use out of it so I purchased it. When I checked out the cashier was very helpful. She made sure to remind me that the blazer was now a "final sale" and I was in and out in no time flat. Pleasant and easy shopping.

But my recent experience left me shocked, hurt, and questioning whether loyalty means anything here--especially if you're not white. During my visit, the store was busy, which I completely understand. I politely asked a tall sales associate with tattoos if the items I was holding came in different sizes. She seemed to not understand me, asking me to repeat several times, and eventually responded with a blunt, "What's out is all we have," delivered with a tone that felt cold and dismissive. When I mentioned I was willing to wait for a fitting room, she seemed more eager to push me away than help, emphasizing repeatedly that no fitting rooms were available--despite others coming and going. After over 30 minutes of waiting patiently, I noticed a room open up and asked if it was my turn. Her response? A sharp, "It's not for you," with no explanation--while no one else seemed to be waiting. When I raised my concern with another associate, I was met not with understanding or apology, but with eye-rolling and the excuse: "We're just busy." Here's what I noticed: their tone and treatment toward other (white) customers were polite, helpful, even cheerful. What I experienced felt noticeably different. I've lived in Boston for 10 years and have never encountered such rudeness and thinly veiled hostility in any store. Whether this was a case of implicit bias, poor training, or outright discrimination--I'll let others decide. But this is not how loyal customers, or any human being, should be treated. I share this not out of anger alone, but with the hope that others will be aware--and that the management will take a hard look at what kind of environment they're fostering.

I was in Boston recently and decided to hit up Reformation since I'd only ever shopped from them online and never had a chance to go to a store and actually try the clothes on ahead of making a purchase. There were a few dresses online that I had my eye on, and I was excited to try them on. As I entered I felt a bit like Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman. There weren't many customers in the shop (weekday), but I felt totally lost because it looked like they only had one of each item on the racks. (Side-note: the tiniest sizes, of course.) I looked totally bewildered, but no one working there came up to me, they were huddled around the check-out counter chatting and occasionally looking over at me. Eventually, I approached them and asked them the process to try things on since there was only one size of each item. One of them glanced over my shoulder at the screen on the wall and said I just pick out the item on the screen and request my size and someone would pull the item from the back and start a fitting room. I've never experienced this process at a store before, and am down for innovation, but there were no smiles, no signs explaining the process, nothing that felt inclusive or friendly at all. Besides that, they only seemed to have the most recent collection, and were missing tried and true staple dresses that are popular on the website. Ultimately, I tried on one dress in a couple of sizes and left without anything. The experience was pretty uncomfortable and uninviting, so it is extremely unlikely I'll return. I'll just shop their online store and cross my fingers it fits...

It was at this point that I noticed I had accidentally got the wrong size in these pants I got, and I was about to just switch them out real quick before heading to the checkout. Then over the intercom thing they said "it is now 20 minutes until closing time, so please make your final selections and head to the checkout", and I was like ok perfect timing I just need to switch this and it's right here. But when I turned around to face the rack with the pants, there was a bunch of security guys kinda pushing everyone out. I was right in front of the rack, so I asked the guy who was blocking me from it if I could just switch out the size really quickly, and he firmly said "No. We're closed. You need to go to the checkout." and continued backing me up. So I was like "really I can't just switch it even tho it's right there?", and he said no so I gave up and went downstairs. Now, I do understand that places like to start closing up a little before their closing time so they can leave at that time, but there was 20 whole minutes until the store closed, there was a line at the checkout to wait in, and I just needed to simply switch the item for the correct size. Keep in mind, the rack with the pants was legitimately no more than 2 feet behind him. I felt like it was just so rude and unnecessary for him to not let me. Like why did it matter if I waited in line for 5 minutes, or switched out the pants I needed and waited in the line for 4 1/2 minutes ??? I could have easily switched them and then just been the last person in line, but he just didn't let me!! It was so disappointing!!! I ended up not getting the pants because they were a size too small so I just had to let the check out person take them. :((( Why couldn't I even say ok then I don't want them, and put them back on the rack behind him?? Idk I really don't get it. Then I came back when I was in the area about a month later and all of those pants were completely gone. I saw so many of the same items that were there before, but not the pants I wanted so badly. I can't find them online, or literally anywhere else on earth, which makes no sense. The staff had no idea why this was either/where they went. It's just so upsetting knowing I could have had these one of a kind (apparently?), cutest pants ever, but I can't all because this random security guy wanted to go home 10 seconds sooner.
