I called Potomac Services on a Thursday afternoon to schedule a dryer vent cleaning and to install a bird guard on my condo. I left a message and was promptly called back and given a reasonable quote. I scheduled the appointment for the following Monday. On Monday after reviewing the location of the vent, he decided he needed a longer ladder and there would be an additional charge which I had no problem with. The reason for the one star is I never heard back from Potomac Services despite leaving two messages about the follow up appointment. I guess he decided he didn't want my business. read more

I had a request for a chimney cleaning. The person told me I would need a liner and said I need to pay 85 dollars for the time spent at our house even though they did not clean my chimney. The worker said he would write up an estimate of what needed to be done. I wrote a check for the 85 dollar in good faith since they said they would send me an estimate. I never got an estimate or a call back in response to my messages. They cashed the check. read more

Eric came out to our house last week to clean our dryer vent. He was incredibly polite and professional. He took the time to explain exactly what her was going to do to clear the vent and then cleaned up thoroughly when he was through. The technician, Jason, showed up early and did a good job. He was professional, helpful, and did not leave any mess behind. My house's ducts have not been clean for many years. I initially called Potomac Services because the owner Jeff Peterson had served in the military for 30 years as an engineer and I wanted to thank him for his service. I called to have my two chimneys cleaned, but he asked about the dryer vent as well, which I had never had cleaned. They did a great job on the chimneys, but the dryer vent was so clogged when they ran their brush (a 15 foot run) it went through but didn't get all the lint out. After they left the dryer wasn't drying properly, so we called an appliance company to fix the dryer. They could find nothing wrong with it and said the vent wasn't clear. I called Jeff back and he sent out another employee who spend three hours cleaning out that vent. The amount of lint that finally came out was incredibly. When I mentioned to Jeff that I had spend $155 to have the dryer looked at, he offered to pay for that bill, which he did. Several conclusions. First, Jeff Peterson is a man of character and will do the right thing. If anyone reading this is calling to have their chimney cleaned, consider having the dryer vent cleaned as well. Thank goodness he suggested it. There is no doubt it could have been a fire hazard and my dryer is working a ton better, as the vent is clean as a whistle. It's just nice dealing with a company that does the right thing. The employees spoke english and left the areas around the chimney in excellent shape. I highly recommend them. read more

This is my first time having a fireplace service, and Casey and Damien were wonderful! They showed up on time, and protected my home from any dirt coming from the cleaning. Casey spent a lot of time explaining to me what the issues were and the various options to fix them. He was sure to answer all my questions and I was able to schedule the repairs to happen next week. They did such a good job, my father had them come over and do his fireplace inspection and cleaning too! I've already recommended their services to a friend having fireplace issues. We wanted our dryer vent cleaned before installing our new dryer. They charged us $100, but the next day when the dryer installed it turned out that the vent was still blocked. When I called them they said that I have to pay another $100 to complete the job. It's total rip off , I would not recommend them to anybody. read more

*Service 05OCT2012*: The chimney serviceman was young but polite and worked quick (seemed too quick, less than 30 minutes for chimney that had not been cleaned in over a decade). Once everything was completed (cleaning and inspection) I asked how the chimney looked. Was told that from his vantage point it was ok. I asked how did the top look and was told he could run a camera up there but it came with a cost. I then asked how did the top of the chimney look (where I've read is where damage starts) was told he could not initially see anything because the sun was in his eyes and once i pointed out a broken brick told me it would cost around 250 to fix it. All this without checking. I am guessing this normal for chimney sweeps but thought other possible customer should be aware of this lack of attention - which comes at higher cost since they were billed as the leading CSIA chimney sweep company. *False Advertisement* : I am also a little concerned about the bait-and-switch picture of a man using a brush from the top of the chimney - this should be removed from their site if the do not plan to get up there during a routine cleaning. Please note, had several serviceman at the house so could not press technician about his quick cleaning and lack of inspection. I will need to call another company out to actually inspect and possibly repair any chimney damage. Disappointed. read more

Last spring we contracted PS's to clean our ducts and our clothes dryer hose. We were left with a mess on both accounts. We had to hire another company to reclean both. Our HVAC system was filled with dirt and debris. The tech did not ck his work and we figure he must have attached the hoses up incorrectly so they did not suck but rather they just moved the dirt. If he had cked his work, he would have found a totally clogged filter and dust etc throughout. When he cleaned the dryer vent, he only used his hose from the outside vent, he did not start or finish at the hose connected to the clothes dryer. The company that came to re clean our units did a great job. They caught the clog in our dryer hose because they did it correctly from inside and outside our home. What was left was a fire hazard so we are so relieved they cleaned it properly We did not tell them of our experience w' PS..but when the work was completed, we did ask if the HVAC unit was dirty..he said yes, then asked how long has it been since we cleaned it. When he heard last spring his eyes got wide in shock. . Something as simple as duct cleaning has now cost us $ 535.00 to PS's and another $500 for the good company..this does not include what it cost us to repair our HVAC unit from the damage of a clogged fliter. The reaction from PS's was/is pretty much hostile, like it was our fault. Amazing huh? read more

I have used Potomac Services for a dryer vent cleaning and a chimney repair. With the vent cleaning, it turned out that the cleaning probably wasn't necessary because our dryer vent is so short (I had just moved in and was checking it off the inspection list) so that seemed pricey at over a hundred bucks, but the service was great. Their chimney work performed by Jason was done quickly with adequate cleanup. Now, we haven't USED the chimney yet so after a season we'll see if our house indeed does not burn down :) but I researched a few companies and got several estimates before going with them, and their customer service stood out. I got the impression these guys aren't out to make a quick buck, they're out to do right by you and your chimney. I'm sure they are not the cheapest but they seemed to care more, and explained all of their recommendations. We ended up performing a repair instead of inserting a new flue liner, so we did save some $$ there. The video inspection was pretty cool too. read more

Appointment setup one week in advance. One hour before appointment technician calls and says "snow was worse than I thought, for our safety we won't be coming out today." I asked if the trucks were stuck and couldn't get out in the snow. He said "no, we can get the trucks out no problem". I said "All the highways are clear, I was just on Route 28, 7 and 267" And he said "oh the neighborhoods are where we usually get hit at." I asked if he meant they get stuck in the side streets. He said "no, we don't get stuck. But from our experience when we go out on a snow day other drivers run into out trucks in neighborhoods." These guys clearly wanted to give themselves the day off. Your not in kindergarten. If you want to make money you need to get out on days with a little snow like the rest of us that put our big boy boots on. I'm especially not thrilled as I have a pregnant wife and child at home and this service call was for heating. read more

Amazing company, amazing people, and our chimney is not only safe, but now looks stunning. Moving is stressful, and I was stressed when Jeff, the owner, came out because there were boxes everywhere and I could not even find my toiletries yet (I still cannot find my shampoo but such is life). I wasn't my nicest self and in fact, was quite snappy (still embarrassed to this day). His professionalism was amazing and he handled it all in stride (thank you). The quote was very good and the chimney pics were helpful - I could tell what needed to be done and why (a huge plus because you feel confident spending your money on the fix). We could schedule right away, a huge plus, and when the crew came out to do the work they were friendly, quick (but not hurried) and efficient. They, too, were very nice to me when I thought the mantle and hearth were too dark/masculine (ridiculous of me because I chose the color....). They offered to stop the work, call the owner and help me get something else. In the end I stuck with the color, added some light colored candles and it looks AMAZING. 5 stars for them all around. (Only 1 for me - I was a bit ridiculous and snappy. #stillembarrassed.) Thank you Potomoc Services. read more
