BLTA sandwich (only available for a limited time)
    Susan H.

One thing I want to make clear about this updated review --- My experience happened just before all COVID-19 hell broke loose. If what happened to us had happened in the present, I would have cut them a lot of slack due to the fact that these are very stressful times for us all---especially for those who deal with the public on a daily basis. We were here on a Sunday in the beginning of March. I stopped in to get 2 sandwiches to go. We were interested in trying the BLTA (bacon, lettuce, tomato, avocado) as it was only going to be around for a limited time. The place wasn't busy at all. I walked up to the counter and told the sandwich maker that I wanted 2 BLTAs on white bread to go. He asked me to repeat my order 3 times---and he still screwed it up. One thing I've never liked about Potbelly is that their sandwich making process is opaque. At other places, like Jersey Mike's and Subway you are able to watch your sandwich being made from start to finish. At Potbelly you can't see a thing and just have to trust that it is being made properly. If we were eating it there, we would have caught the mistake and brought it to their attention. Instead, we didn't discover it until we got home. One of the sandwiches had no bacon on it at all. Seriously, there was no excuse for that, especially when that sandwich costs more than the others on their menu. I looked at the receipt and they had a website where you could fill out a survey and get a free cookie at a later visit. I did the survey with the hope of giving them feedback. The website is "potbellylistens". Yeah, right. I explained what happened. The survey asked if we wanted them to call us about our experience. I filled in the info. Never did anyone call. Considering we were still in "normal times", that was inexcusable. As I said, if something like that happened during these fraught times, I would have let it go. In the future, when life goes back to normal, we expect we'll go to a Potbelly when our grandkids visit. After we took them here once, it then turned out that they really like it and now want to eat here when they're in town. We will just avoid this particular one and always be sure to dine in so that we can catch any mistakes that may happen.

    Meatball Sandwich

We don't have Potbelly Sandwich Shops in Georgia so I wanted to try them out while I was in town. As the name suggests, they specialize in sub sandwiches--toasted and made to order--along with soups, salads, milkshakes, Zapp's potato chips and cookies. I took it as a good sign that the line was almost out the door. During the lunch rush, an employee used a tablet to take orders from people way back in the line. I appreciated that efficiency. There were at least fifteen people ahead of me but I wasn't in line more than six or seven minutes. I ordered the original Meatball Sandwich with marinara and provolone. The bread was gloriously crisp with no jagged edges to Cap'N Crunch cut the roof of my mouth. Unfortunately, there were too many gristles in the meatballs. For a sandwich that good looking and that tasty to have so much gristle was so wrong. Two stars for the gristly sandwich with a third star for the cookies. They were fresh baked and since my table was painted Cookie Monster blue, the kid in me enjoyed them that much more. My first visit wasn't everything I'd hoped for but any chain selling Zapp's with their subs can't be dismissed that easily in my heart. I would be willing to give Potbelly's another shot but I'd try a different sandwich next time.

***In many ways, Potbelly feels very similar to other above average fast food sandwich spots like Which Wich or Jersey Mike's; some things really stood out though (like the salami and the chocolate malt) so I think this chain might be one of your better options out there for good fast food*** This was my first ever visit to a Potbelly. I remember seeing several of them in Chicago and I have always wanted to try their food. Potbelly started in Chicago, but they also have locations in the Virginia area near Washington DC. This Potbelly location is very close to Washington Dulles International Airport so this Potbelly made for a convenient spot for a quick bite before a flight. Potbelly has a setup and menu similar to the other quick order sandwich spots like Jersey Mike's and Which Wich. Potbelly (or at least this one) does not look like a fast food sandwich spot though. This Virginia location actually looked like a sit-down restaurant. It had a pleasant rustic decor with nice looking dark wood. Potbelly is not table service though. You order at the counter. They offer a collection of cold sandwiches like an Italian sub, roast beef, chicken salad, tuna salad, and so on. Hot sandwiches are also available. In addition, you can find salad, soups and even a few desserts like milkshakes and malts made from hand scooped ice cream. I had a sandwich here known as A Wreck. It came with ham, turkey, roast beef, and salami. The sandwich was customizable and I added ingredients like lettuce, tomato, onion, and a very good hot pepper mix (nicely spicy). I also had it on a wheat roll. The sandwich was a good sandwich though it was similar to Jersey Mike's in terms of the bread and a few of the meats like the ham and the turkey. I liked the roast beef at Potbelly more though. While it did not have the great (and more medium rare color) of the roast beef at Jersey Mike's, Potbelly's roast beef had a stronger flavor. The salami was also good. It had a really good and distinct flavor. I also got some salt and vinegar potato chips on the side from a brand called Zapp's. The chips had a good crunch, but they were way overseasoned--too much salt and too much vinegar. I finished with their chocolate malt and this was the best part of the meal. The shake was thick and it had a good chocolate and malted milk flavor (many containers of Carnation malted milk powder sit behind the counter). Service was very good--polite, friendly and quick. Prices were very reasonable. Maybe it was just because of the area this Potbelly was in, but the price for a regular sized sandwich here seemed noticeably less expensive than a Which Wich or a Jersey Mike's. While I wish my sandwich (A Wreck) was better (it was still a fast food sandwich though an above average one), there might be really good sandwiches here given the good flavors of the salami and the hot pepper mix. A good option might be the Italian, which comes with capicola, mortadella, pepperoni, and salami. All the vegetable toppings were fresh and the chocolate malt was good so I think you could definitely have a satisfying and reasonably priced quick meal here. Potbelly is located near several fast food spots. They all share a free parking lot. It is easy finding an open space.

There's so many delicious spins on the classic dish I would've never thought of. Rather than getting a meal there, I bought the medium and large size chicken salad containers to make my own sandwiches throughout the week. What I ordered: The Olivia's Old South and Jalapeño hopper were my favorites but all the flavors I got really good! Your order comes with crackers. If you get their sandwiches it comes with 1-2 sides. Service: The staff let you try as many of the flavors as you want at the restaurant which was super kind! That's how I knew which options to order. Overall, I'll definitely be going back and ordering a couple of the larger chicken salad containers for weeks I don't feel like meal prepping. Ordering, when dining in, involves giving one's order to the person at the counter. A nice man was working there and greeted us with a smile. I told him it was our first time here and we would probably have a few questions. We looked at the menu (they have one on the wall as well as a laminated one). I chose their 1-scoop platter. For my chicken, I chose "Carol," which is a simply dressed scoop. They have other scoops that have items in them, such as pimentos. For my side, I chose "broccoli salad". Crackers are given with each platter. Plus, a cookie is given (mini round buttercream frosted). My husband got a croissant with Carol's chicken salad. He got a cup of soup instead of a side dish. We each got soft drinks. A cup is given, and it's self-serve. All in all, we enjoyed our meals. The decor, to me anyway, reminded me of an old time kitchen table, complete with plastic tablecloths with prints. I felt the decor gave off a cozy feel.
