We've been trying to come here since we started dating but our timing has been off due to when they close between lunch and dinner. We did arrive at about 2:20 on a Saturday and got in but quickly found out that they close at 3:00. This made for a rushed experience and took away a bit from our enjoyment. The place is small in comparison to other hot pot places we've gone. You'll be subjected to your dining neighbor's conversation, but other than that, you have plenty of space to fit your food. My girlfriend helped explain the menu to me and I was able to pick out the Thai Style Pot and degree of spice. Service was quick, but probably because they wanted us out quickly. Initially, I enjoyed all of the items, but when we got down to the broth at the end I really wanted to savor it. Unfortunately, we were pushing up to their afternoon closing time. It's consistently satisfying and comforting. For appetizers, we always order the chicken popcorn (crispy and flavorful!) and the thousand year egg with cold tofu--a must if you're into traditional dishes. The only downside for me, as a bit of a germaphobe, is that the drinks are brought over with hands touching the top rim of the cup. It's a small detail, but one I notice every time. Good food, ok service. I came for a work lunch and the restaurant filled up quickly at lunchtime. Their menu is similar to Boiling Point but might have even more options! They also have free teas provided, not sure if it's just for lunch though because it wasn't on the menu. I got the House Special Pot at mild spice and it was super yummy and enough food where I had leftovers. Unfortunately the service was a bit disappointing though. One of my coworkers hadn't realized that the House Special Pot he ordered came with clams as well and he's allergic to shellfish so had to stop eating out of caution. When he raised this with staff they just told him it was on the menu and he should've noted it when ordering. Tried the Vegetarian Mushroom Pot here yesterday and it was underwhelming. The broth was extremely bland--basically tasted like lightly salted water. It felt like the ingredients (veggies and mushrooms) were just added to plain water and left to cook, without any real depth of flavor. Even the greens tasted bitter. They also forgot to include the rice that was supposed to come with the order. I didn't bother bringing it up since the food had already killed my appetite at that point. If a restaurant is going to include vegetarian hot pot on the menu, there needs to be more thought put into the broth. Even without meat-based stock, there are plenty of ways to build flavor--herbs, spices, and traditional ingredients like star anise or jujube can make a big difference. I visited on Monday around lunchtime, and the place got really packed right after opening. If you're coming here, come for the food, not the service. The food was excellent, the Taiwanese spicy beef is always on point and still my favorite dish. The Beef Bento also has a good portion of meat with a decent price. However, the service could use some improvement. The server didn't seem to speak English very well and wasn't very friendly. He placed water with no ice on my table without saying anything, and didn't ask if I wanted ice water or anything else. Ordering was done through a phone scan of the barcode on the table. The wait time for food wasn't too long, and they offer one free iced green tea or black tea with every pot you order. After ordering, the server will ask which tea you prefer. It's not too often I get Hot Pot, but Pot on Fire definitely impressed me and left me full. Once we arrived, we hopped on the digital waitlist and waited about 10 minutes to be seated; it was quite busy in the evening on the weekend, so expect a wait. Once walking in, you just get a whiff of seafood smell. You can order everything digitally, and they have an extensive menu and even their own brand of bubble tea. So the food is good. That's not the problem. But they are that restaurant that tries to cheat the customers on the tips. So my total was 55 because I got that weekday deal. But my server totaled me 68 dollars. She "accidentally" charged me for a drink but didn't apologize. Then, when it was time to tip, the percentage didn't match the price. So my total ended up being 62 with tax, and I pushed 18% of that, but the number on the bottom of 18% was $21 dollars, which is actually 34%. When I brought it up to the server, she said "their system" is messed up. So fucken fix it? Oh but if I didnt notice or brought it up, I just tipped 34% unknowingly. She ended up fixing it on her end and asked me how much I actually wanted to tip. Now I have to keep my receipt to ensure they didn't charge me 21 dollars in tips. I haven't been to many of these personal hotpot places, but I am now a huge fan of pot on fire. I don't know if this type of concept is very popular in New York City other than at like a Korean restaurant where there is like budajigae. But I'm obsessed with this personal hotspot concept type of restaurant. Plus the food is affordable and filling. I think it's such a great price for 20 bucks. Probably the best hotpot in the city, the broth is super flavorful and the portions are filling. It does get busy during prime time so you might have to wait a bit and sometimes flag the staff down for refills, but it is still worth it and has become my go to spot for hotpot.
