Went to Marugame Udon with a few friends and had to try this SoCal location since I love going to the one in SF. This was the closest one to us, and it definitely lived up to what I was expecting. I tried their new Bolognese udon, and it did not disappoint. It had a really rich, savory tomato flavor that paired surprisingly well with the chewy udon noodles. It's a little different from the usual udon dishes, but that's what made it stand out. I would definitely get it again, especially since udon is one of my favorite types of noodles. My friends got the Nikutama udon, which was also really good. You can tell the udon is freshly made, with that perfect chewy texture. We also grabbed some of their tempura sides, and they were crispy, light, and super satisfying. The workers were really nice, and the whole setup runs pretty smoothly even when it gets busy. The space itself is pretty spacious with lots of seating, so it's great for groups. The nikutama udon was only warm rather than hot, and the broth tasted overly salty with a slight sweetness. I added green onions and flakes, but the flakes quickly became soggy in the soup. I also ordered crispy katsu, which was actually quite fresh and tender, and helped give an extra star. I saw them and had to pay them a visit. It's located in the Rolling Ridge Plaza. Self-ordering kiosk is towards the back on the left side. If you're dining in, you'll want to walk to the right upon entry to place your order. Good and comfortable interior dining space. Condiments and water station needed some attention and care unfortunately. I used the kiosk to order. Got two udon bowls (Nikutama Udon and Creamy Broth Udon), a few appetizers (sweet potato, pumpkin tempura, tamagoyaki tempura, potato croquette), and one calamansi drink. Everything was very fresh. Taste and flavors were on point. Appetizers were in good size. Well done! Since I did take-out, I didn't have any interactions with the staff. My order was placed at the pick-up shelf. The wait wasn't too long. One small observation, the packaging could have been better. I asked for utensils and they were all over the place in the bag as though they were just thrown in there. When you see the photo, you'll understand what I mean. I'm usually not picky about this stuff, but it would have been nice if the staff offered some attention and care when packaging. Hence, 4 stars! This is a Lunch Line style service where you get your tray and request your food that is made to order, and once you order you can select some tempura add ons, I appreciate the fact you can request freshly made tempura if you'd like. The food was flavorful and very reminiscent of my time in Japan. The sauce station could have used a bit more attention since it was pretty busy and picked over, but over all it was a great experience and the food was again very delicious ohh and affordable which we love! The tables were well spaced apart and the seats were comfortable. I liked that while you could bus your own table there was still staff coming around offering to pick up your trays and finished trays for you. It was perfection in a bowl and the portions were big enough for 2 people to share with us what we did... SHRIMP TEMPURA: 10/10 It came out nice and hot. Got the kitsune which is my go to. The process is very easy: you go down the line telling the server which noodle broth you want, then grab the tempuras you want after. You pay and find seating. This location has more seating than the ones I've been to before. Jen wanted me to try udon noodles so we came here after church. As this was my first time, I began grilling Jen with questions trying to figure out what items were in each selection, spiciness and broths. We both went with Curry Nikutama. I was hoping for more spice/heat, so I found it a bit too sweet for my taste. I added vegetables to the dish as I was a bit hungry and the soft boiled egg, meat and udon noodles were all great. While the place was busy, the customer turnover is quick so finding a place to eat this time wasn't a problem. I would imagine at very busy times it might be a challenge. Just a good indication that business is good. No soda fountain service. Cans only. Recommend getting a cup of ice as beverages were not chilled. The ambiance in this location is more squarish compared to deep and long one at the Costa Mesa location. I also added a crispy chicken cutlet at the end. I like how you can order, grab your food, and already sinking into my first bite in literally less than 2 mins. It's faster than fast food! Whenever I travel to California or Hawaii, Marugame Udon is a must! This is a franchise from Japan, where they hand make delicious udon noodles at each location. It is kind of set up as a Chipotle, where you can order a regular or large udon and add on various tempura dishes, such as tempura shrimp, croquette, and tamago). Only complaint I have about this location is that they were really blasting the air conditioning, so I was freezing under the vents! Definitely try to bring a jacket if you can, lol. We ordered the regular sizes of the beef gyudon and kitsune udon. The kitsune udon has a little more of a subtle flavor but comes with fried tofu. The beef gyudon comes with a good serving of beef and has a more savory, meaty flavor to the broth. I also cannot leave without the potato croquette, which tastes yummy when you soak it in the warm broth. I usually go to the South Coast Plaza location, but this one is way less crowded and the food is just as good. There's plenty of parking in the plaza & they are well staffed. Marugame is a cafeteria-style restaurant where you first order your soup. The bowl is placed on a tray & you can add green onion and tempura flakes to your soup. You move down the line & can choose from a variety of tempura. The nice thing is that if you don't see a specific tempura, you can ask the staff & they'll make it fresh! My go-to order is the Nikutama & tamagoyaki. I haven't tried any of the other soups, but they look just as good! The udon itself is very fresh & I love the texture of it. In the area where all the utensils are, you can add ginger & shichimi (Japanese spice blend) if you want a little kick. read more

I was excited to try Marugame Udon again since my last visit was in Waikiki about two years ago. I even made the 30-minute drive on a cold, rainy day, looking forward to a hot, comforting bowl of udon. Unfortunately, this visit was disappointing. The restaurant was extremely cold inside--we had to search for a spot where we couldn't feel the AC blowing on us. Once I grabbed my tempura sauce and utensils and sat down, I was surprised to find that my bowl of udon and broth were only room temperature. I watched the staff prepare it and noticed that the udons were in pre-separated mounds sitting in large trays. He took the udon and placed it in a bowl and poured hot broth over it. I had assumed the noodles weee hot but clearly not. There's no way cold noodles can become hot that way, and it really showed. I hate to write negative reviews but this is a chain restaurant so it can withstand an honest review. I hope they change the way they prepare the food. read more

Located in the same plaza as Omomo and 99R, there's a ton of good food options nearby but Marugame hits hard. Walk up service counter for your bowl of udon, and then you can pick out different tempura toppings if you want more. Decent amount of seating available, and it's not too lively that you can't have a conversation. Came during the summer lunch and had their cold udon bowl which was surprisingly refreshing. The udon was wonderful! I recommend trying some of the popular udon items. I would skip on the gyudon though. The gyudon wasn't that great compared to other gyudon places I've tried. I love how easy it is to order and the wide selection of fried items you can order to eat with your udon. The only thing I didn't like was how hot it was inside for a hot weather day. I wish they would've upped the ac so that the customers don't have to dine in the heat. Additionally, the udon making station is right next to the side of the restaurant where a lot of sun comes in and theres no blinds or tinting to reduce the sunlight. While the interior looks small, there's plenty of tables to sit at. Their service is super quick, making your bowl right in front of you as you go through the ordering line, you can choose your toppings, and tempura side dishes. We opted for the potato croquettes, zucchini, and shrimp. Our main entrees of choice were the Beef Udon, Kitsune Udon, Gyudon bowls, and a Calamansi-ade to top it off. All 11/10, would recommend! Been recommended to visit place so many times so I finally felt that today was the day to give it a go! Upon arriving, we saw that the restaurant was packed, even the line formed outside but that didn't deter us. We eventually got to the person that took our order and seeing the whole process on how they prepare the food while you wait is a super neat idea and I saw exactly how they were able to get people in and out as fast as they did. Towards the end of the line, they had different tempura selections to choose from! We were soon escorted to a table that had been recently cleaned by one of the workers there. Seeing our food spread had both of us salivating and that first bite was out of this world! The beef was sweet and paired with the subtlety salty broth, the combination was one of epic proportions.
