This was my first experience ever at a Portillo's. And wow! I have been missing out! This location is humongous! The parking lot is huge. The inside has a ton of seating. We arrived on a Friday around 12:30pm and it was fairly busy. Many of the tables were occupied. The lady at the register was helpful and patient with us as this was our first time. We ordered the chicken tenders, fries, cheese sauce, Italian Beef and Sausage sandwich with sweet peppers, onion rings, and chocolate cake shakes (a must I've heard). Everything was delicious! My husband's beef and sausage sandwich took a little bit of time because they were making it fresh which was much appreciated. The chicken strips were good too. I got the comeback sauce and the Giardiniera sauce and both were really good. The cheese sauce was hot and super tasty. The chocolate cake shakes were delicious. Mr. Black Fine came around to each table to ensure everything was going okay. We told him it was our first time at a Portillo's and he couldn't have been friendlier. He also came around with chocolate cake shake samples, which was awesome. This place is yummy and the vibes were awesome. Can't recommend this location more! Had wanted to try this place for a while. Ordered chili cheese dogs, onion rings, and milkshake. The milkshake was very good. The onion rings were over battered. The biggest surprise was the chili. It was not very good, and had beans in it. I would give the dogs a C-. Next time (if there is one) I would try the burgers. read more

Things started off pretty rough with the unresponsive order kiosk. I had to start my order over twice because I couldn't get the screen to move up or down. Super lame. Restaurant was pretty clean, not super clean. They announce your pick up number over a muffled speaker which is almost unintelligible, so you really have to watch the screen. Overall, eating in the restaurant is a fairly cold, corporate experience. But I have to say, the beef sandwich was really good. Fries were solid too. I had never heard of this place until I saw it on my way to some shopping in Katy. I was a little hungry so I decided to stop by for a quick bite before heading home. The food and service was good. My only complaint is that when I went to find a table to sit at, many of them had not been wiped down. I had to take a napkin and brush off some crumbs that were left on the table/seat. To be fair, it was later in the evening so maybe it was after a big rush, but it wasn't busy at all during the time I visited so there should have been no issue with property clearing and cleaning the tables. The decor was plentiful. There were many interesting things to look at and snap photos of. All in all, it was a decent experience. Would for sure visit again. read more

A food writer, whom I truly respect and who taught me so much had a couple of rules respect to reviewing a restaurant. The first rule was "give a place at least three months to get going before you visit so that they can iron out the kinks". Second, visit at least three times because you need three times to really evaluate and critique a restaurant well. And so today I returned to Portillo's at the Katy location to give it another try, after a fairly awful experience on my previous visits. Let's see how they do today. Sometimes, we love a particular type of food because that is what we grew up with. I've often joked that if an alien landed his saucer in Texas and had his first Tex-Mex combo platter, what with all of its salt and garlic powder and oily cheese he would probably say "what the heck is this?" But those of us who grew up in Texas think nothing of enjoying a big old Tex-Mex combo plate with enchiladas, rice, beans and guacamole. Whenever I visit a restaurant, I wash my hands before dining so that if I were to have any kind of reaction, I would know that it was not from any bacteria that I might have brought in. Today there was one of the staff inspecting the men's restroom when I walked in, and I complimented him on doing so. "Thanks for checking on the cleanliness of the restroom today. I know it isn't the restaurant's fault when men urinate on the floor because they think their penises are longer than they actually are, but it's always a good sign when a restaurant has set a standard for inspecting the restrooms on a regular basis throughout the day." My $20 meal today consisted of a Chicago hotdog, a regular Chicago beef sandwich and a chocolate cake shake. So I had the opportunity to taste test a little bit of each. Still calorie counting so it was just a taste. And here is my opinion. First. I skipped the fries. Because they are just the standard crinkle cut, frozen, grocery store type fries, and not worth the calories. Second. Sit outside. It is really noisy even when there is no one here. Loud music. Lots of reflective surface. Next. The shake was "okay". Nothing special. Tasted like a Wendy's or Burger King shake. The hot dog was prepared authentically and was "okay". It had a "bite" from the casing. I liked the shaved beef sandwich. The beef and bread were good. You might want to add cheese to it. So. I don't need to return. I didn't grow up with this kind of food, but I suspect that if you did, you are going to look forward to dining here. Everything was prepared well today, unlike the previous two times, so it looks like they've gotten their kitchen together. I will say that I think their pickles are good. read more

Went out to Katy on a weekend to try this new spot. While it looks 100% the same as the other locations, it is new and really cool inside, with a vintage car and auto related theme throughout the interior. My friend and I ordered the Italian beef sandwich and she got hers with the sausage. While tasty, I've noticed that Portillo's sandwiches (and not just this location) always come out soggy. I don't know if it's something I'm doing, or if there is just too much juice rolling out the bun. It's a bummer since the bread is so good. The crinkle cut fries are solid. Yesterday was Great, maybe because it seems as it was two chicken strips, and next day felt like one. My favorite is the onion rings! And I don't even like onions! So, I've been to Portillo's in the Chicago area and loved it. So glad I found this one in Katy. The Italian beef with cheese is so freaking good. It's messy and delish. You will need a lot of napkins, a lot. The regular Italian beef is also good. We usually have to order them to the house to quench our beefy desires. Now, that there's one near'ish me. I'm going! I dream of that Sammie (sandwich, for non Sammie eaters). As I write this, I can almost smell it. Ps. Don't pass on the Italian Giardiniera. I like the hot one. When I hear the name Portillo's, I'm immediately awash with warm, fuzzy feelings from my many trips to see family in Chicago. This Windy City-based chain offers what I genuinely consider America's third-largest city's top culinary exports: the Italian beef and the red hot. I can't count how many times I've set foot in Portillo's, but I can recall always leaving the eatery stuffed beyond belief with a smile on my face. ​So when the news broke that the Houston area would be home to at least two branches, my excitement went through the roof. Now, I can get my beef fix without having to catch a flight to Chi-Town, even if I have to travel more than 60 miles. As of the publication of this glowing review about the Katy location, there are four in Space City. ​Portillo's Katy has been open for about a year, but my birthday two weeks ago was my first time there. I didn't need to browse the menu over the counter because I already knew what I wanted: a Big Beef done hot, sweet, and wet with fries. I even added a red hot dragged through the garden to the mix, just as I used to do at the Portillo's locations up north. It felt like welcoming back an old friend when I carried the tray with my orders to one of the booths I chose. ​I must say that despite being a Texas outpost, Portillo's Katy succeeded at making both the beef and the red hot as similar to their original counterparts in the Windy City. Knowing it may be a while before another visit, I slowly savored every bite. It felt like a dream come true. FINALLY! The new location in Katy has the Chicago Italian beef/sausage combo sandwich. It was really good and tastes close enough to the original back home. Thanks to YELP I was able to participate in the event to get a free sandwich combo meal. I was a happy girl too...LOL. Although, since Portillo has franchised some same it's not as good as it is back home and I admit the taste has changed a bit since it's been sold by original owners. But I'm okay with that and glad they made it to Texas. Nothing is the same as it was many, years ago due to the price of food these days. I was excited to finally try Portillo's. I was working in Katy and needed to grab lunch. You can order in a computer. I ordered a plant-based hot dog and chocolate cake. While I waited by the pick up station, James gave me a drink cup and said, "Drink's on me." That was nice. I chose iced tea. There's sweet and unsweet and they have fresh lemon slices. The tea is ok. The plant based hotdog is small but tasty. The chocolate cake is tasty. It's given to you in a box even if you will dine in the restaurant. I'll definitely be back when I'm in the area. I live over 30 mins away from the nearest Portillo's however, I was in Katy for the first time in a while and decided to stop. Very bad decision! Went through the drive thru for a simple cheese fry and chocolate cake slice. I got my food rather quickly. I pulled up and tasted the fried and they were CLEARLY not fresh. Hot cheese and lukewarm fries. I pulled back to the drive thru and sat for about 5 mins but the line wasn't moving so I parked and went inside instead. My fries were replaced quickly and I headed home. I opened my cake and it immediately looked strange. Being a Wisconsin native, I know what Portillo's should look, smell, and taste like and this cake MISSED EVERY MARK! It looks like someone's at home poor attempt at making chocolate cake, it smelled strange, and tasted even stranger. My very first bite and I had a weird piece of something in my mouth. It looks and feels like GRISTLE! I am absolutely grossed out and I can't just drive a few minutes away to get a replacement and I don't even want a replacement if the same person is in charge of the baking. I came here after visiting previously. They have some amazing chocolate cake which you can buy by the slice. It was a coworkers birthday so I decided to hit this place up to get their birthday cakes which are only $30! An amazing deal for a house made cake that is airy with buttercream icing. Chocolate on chocolate!!! The service was amazing even tho I didn't as only ordering Togo! The store was impeccably clean with a large very clear menu display! I love my little field trips here after my Sunday nail appointment. I tried the beef sandwich with hot peppers and no gravy and love they have Coke Zero . The bread was fresh and the meat was tender however I do agree the seasoning could be a little heavier. They staff was friendly and everything came out so quick and hot. I went through the drive through and was waiting to be greeted through the mic and no one said anything so I'm just looking at the menu and a young lady walks up without saying hello and says "yall couldn't hear me" We replied no and her attitude lifted and she was very kind immediately after realizing it was her speaker not working. I could only eat a third of it haha. It's kind of soggy because it's dipped, but it's good. The meat is thin and soft. The Chicago dog was good too but not my favorite. I really loved the peppers!! The onion rings were so so crispy. Some of the best I've had. We also got some fries and cheese sauce. Immaculate. The cheese sauce reminds me of the Taco Bell nacho cheese. First time trying the place and we decided to stop since we were in the area.Line went pretty fast,cashiers were friendly,lots of space and tables. I ordered a #1 added mix of peppers (not spicy but eh still good). The cheese is good but IMHO it's not needed. I asked for my sandwich dry and sauce on side and it was a good choice because that bread does soak up and you'll be eating it with a fork or spoon. Fries are way better than the golden arch. If you like onion rings you should definitely get them cus they're so good. To me it seemed the hotdogs were a bit small but guess I'll try em next time. Husband wasn't too impressed but it's hotdogs lol. Next time I want to try their chocolate cake since I was pretty full. Between his large meal and all I got just reg sized we paid $38. Happy to see Portillo's expansion into Houston over the last year. I've always been curious about what makes a certain fast food chain grow, and Portillo's is a good example. For a business that focuses on high unit volumes, I was impressed with their efficient kitchen operations and their ability to leverage technology (For example, you get to see your order on the monitor in the queue from beginning to ready). In my 2 visits I tried out several items from the Italian beef with hot/sweet peppers to the brats to the popular Chicago-dog, and even an Italian beef with sausage inside of it (Double down! #Merica!) The Italian beef by itself is nothing special but the flavors of the gravy + peppers makes it a satisfying sandwich. The bread can get a bit soggy, but I still liked the overall experience. I'm a Brats over Dogs guy but I'm a fan of a classic Chicago style dog so this place hits the mark for me. The menu is broader than one may expect, also featuring burgers to their famous chocolate shakes. (will have to add to the list next time) The interior has that vintage American diner feel, classic and nostalgic. One thing I would say they could improve is their rewards program which often seems to be buggy and doesn't always sync well with the app/website. Been looking forward to the opening of Portillo's in the greater Houston area. Visited the newly opened location in the Katy area. I found it overrated. The restaurant was super busy on a Saturday afternoon. Waited almost an hour to order and get the food. I had the cheeseburger which was cold and soggy. My parents got the beef sandwich and some hot dogs. I recommend the beef sandwich and the onion rings. The chocolate cake was also good. I'd go back for the beef sandwich and the cake but overall it's not amazing and too busy to be worth going to right now. Once it slows down, I'd perhaps go occasionally. All the hype they say about Portillo's is true! Portillo's, a staple restaurant to the Chicago area, is now in Houston, TX. Not gonna lie, was a bit overwhelmed when I first walked in and looked at the menu (there's so much to choose from!) I had to get a hotdog and one of their famous Italian beef sandwiches. I didn't choose the traditional style Chicago hotdog but got a chili-cheese dog instead. The chili-cheese dog did not disappoint. It was juicy and loaded with plenty of chili and cheese. The chili does has beans in it fyi. But the real star of the show was their Italian beer sandwich - tender, flavorful, and even better when dipped in their au jus. Don't forget to get a side of their cheese sauce! And if you're a big dessert person like I am, don't forget their famous chocolate cake shake - it's rich, creamy, and has actual chunks of their famous chocolate cake blended right in.
