Being connected to Chicago in a very round about way makes me smile when it comes to food when many places just feel like a home cooked meal. I understand Portillo's is one of those fast food joints anyone is magnetized too be it for a birthday cake shake, Italian beef or even a Chicago dog. We weren't looked specifically for a Portillo's but since one just happened to pop up while driving through Avon we said sure, why not! This location is just like all the other ones. Super consistent with the general feel and the staff also did a great job welcoming us there. After grabbing an Italian beef to take a trip down memory lane, it was devoured quickly while enjoying a soda and fries. Highly recommend this location. Whether going through the drive thru or eating there the food will leave you happy. read more

I first had Portillo's while on a foodie tour of Chicago. I do enjoy the Chicago Dog of course, but my life doesn't depend on it. Every once and a while I do get a craving for one and then I stop by their Avon location. Most often I just get a Chicago dog at the drive through, which can be a weird experience. Often folks stand out there and take your card, no cash, put a sticker on your rear view mirror and then you get to drive up to the window to claim your food. A little while ago I met a friend there for dinner. There were lines waiting in front of those kiosks to order... I hate those things. Went around all those folks and stepped up to the counter, was taken care off immediately and received my food before half of the kiosk users were even done ordering. The chocolate cake shake was very good, I enjoyed it more than a chocolate cake shake that I had at the milkshake factory. I felt like it was not overly sweet it had a fantastic texture that would make me consider getting it again. The Italian beef sandwich was nothing incredible. The meat have any especially flavorful notes in the bread was OK. Definitely was a lot of food, before the price, not as much as I expected. Would not get the sweet and hot peppers in the future. Great and fast option for really good Chicago styled food. My go to is always the Chicago dog. It's well assembled and perfectly filling.

I'm not a Portillo's devotee, however, once in a while I decide to give the chain a chance. Portillo's is a 10-state chain with eight locations in Indiana. As a general rule, I avoid their inside dining experience because it sends me into sensory overload between all the people and the ungodly high volume noise. Portillo's is especially known for its hot dogs along with certain specialties like its chocolate cake. They specialize in what is known as "Chicago street food." I've never had a Portillo's hot dog. I've also never had its chocolate cake. I have had its burgers. After today, I've tried its spicy chicken sandwich. This location is, of course, located in Avon. I'm frequenting Hendricks County these days due to family issues in nearby Putnam County. Portillo's has a large indoor setting, though I only checked it out so I could write this sentence. I actually ordered through the drive-thru, though I will note the crowd size was fairly minimal today. As I hit the drive-thru, I noticed they had five special meals. I confirmed I could order a large drink before ordering as I tend to have a grievance against small drinks. I ordered the spicy chicken sandwich with small fries and a large unsweetened iced tea. There was a person working outdoors taking orders - he was a delight and patiently explained options. He was quite impressive. I pulled up to the window - less impressive as it took me between 1-2 minutes to even get acknowledged. They were friendly when they arrived, however, acknowledgement should be much quicker. The food? I enjoyed it. It didn't blow me away. The chicken was good and it did have a decent spicy kick. I'd ordered their sauce on the side, a good recommendation from the employee. The fries are a smaller crinkle-cut variety and I also enjoyed them. The small order was enough. The iced tea was great and they put enough ice in the cup. This is probably closer to a 3.5, however, I was impressed with the guy who took my order and that customer service has me boosting this upward to a 4-star rating. He was a definite rock star. I doubt Portillo's will ever be a destination spot for me, however, I enjoyed this visit and I found it much more satisfying to not eat inside as I simply don't enjoy the Portillo's atmosphere. Overall, this was a good experience and while I won't rush to return I definitely will return as I'm spending more time in this area. read more

It's a long post. I grew up in Chicago when I moved there in 79 a friend of mine took me to Portillo's on North Avenue. Ever since that day, I have loved beef sandwiches because I moved from Georgia and it never had one I had never heard of a Chicago hot dog. Well for 30 years, I wish for a Portillo's in any of the cities I lived in. They finally started expanding and opened one in fishers Indiana. I was so excited the first six months or so it was fantastic. I'm sure a money making grubby greedy manager got in there and started cutting payroll and trying to reduce food costs. The Portillo's I knew and loved disappeared. Beef sandwiches were paltry hotdog. Dogs are being used in the morning from the previous night. It was horrible yet every time I went and had a bad experience I complained and lo and behold they would send me gift cards. I just recently moved to Orlando back from Indiana. That's a long story. I came in just last night to the airport and thought Portillo should be open and should have fairly fresh food since it's only 830. The kiosk thing was kind of hard to operate so I went straight to the counter. I ordered a big beef dipped and of course I had to open my big mouth and talk to the manager and tell them that I ate it the first Portillo's blah blah blah like these guys even care. I said I know what it's supposed to be like so make a good one dip it baby. And then, of course I added a Chicago dog for dessert. The staff at the store seemed happy. They were talking while working and it seemed pretty upbeat. My number got called. I got my package and I sat down. I ate the Chicago dog first, and I had to tell you I noticed that the wieners they're using do not have the flavor of the former Vienna, beef dogs. The flavor of the dog was about half of what I remember. Yet the Chicago dog is prepared perfectly and the wiener itself was hot and plump cold veggies, tomatoes proper mat, celery, salt I would grade it a nine out of 10. Then came the big boy. From the minute, I checked the package and started opening the plastic bag and then the wrapper this thing weighed like a pound. It was hefty. It was hot. It was wet. After peeling away the layers of plastic and cellophane there she was just a staring at me singing do wa Diddy.... Could've probably use a little more hot peppers since they charge $.99 now but you know let's try it. Lo and behold it was just like a 1979 beef sandwich from North Avenue. It was great. It was fantastic. I wish I could've eaten three but one was sufficient. This is the first positive review I have given Portillo's in probably 10 years. I don't know if it was a fluke. I don't know if they realize food portions are important. I don't know what the deal is and I don't care. All I know is it this store made that sandwich and that hotdog to the standard I've known hundreds of times living in the Chicago area. Somebody must've gotten hired or transferred to teach people the Portillo's way. I'm a very happy customer. Kudos to the young man who prepared it. Kudos to the man who trained the young man. Kudos to the manager, who has staff being happy while working. And I will definitely try Portillo's in Orlando my new again home as soon as I get back. I might even go to Fisher today just to see what the deal is and verify that things have finally changed. Good job. Now start cleaning got time to lean. You got time to clean! Portillo's is a gem! Such a classic restaurant that radiates the heart of Chicago! Do not leave without trying their hotdogs. But the burgers are also delicious! The spicy chopped salad was so good! I'm A spicy food lover and haven't really had my love for spice put in a salad and they did it so well! The strawberry lemon cake shake was a refreshing and delicious but the lemon cake stole the show for me! If you keep passing the restaurant and saying you need to stop in... THIS IS YOUR SIGN!! Second time here! The Chicago style dog is a classic. This time around I went with the Italian beef. Cant say it was super memorable but the toppings blended nicely with the sandwich...especially the hot peppers. Servers are always friendly, especially on the side where they call your order with the catchy slogans for each number. read more

I've seen quite a few positive reviews for the various locations of Portillo's so I had to check them out for myself. The inside is lavishly decorated in a 1920s to 1930s theme with "speakeasy" jazz music playing. The amount of indoor dining available is too numerous to count and there is a large outdoor seating area as well. At 11:30 on a Friday they were not crowded for lunch at all. I let ten people go ahead of me as I studied the huge menu for the first time. I ordered the Classic Bowl and added the sweet peppers and mozzarella cheese. Coming in at 400 calories it suited my needs perfectly. And the $12.51 tab including a drink was also very nice for a place this nice. I loved the beef in the gravy. It was superb. I'm glad I got the bowl because I imagine the sandwich would be a messy eat because I would have to have the gravy. I can't wait to come back and try more items especially the hotdogs. The restroom was super nice with almost everything automated; facilities, faucets and soap. Parking is easy in their big lot and surprisingly they have drive thru service. read more

I finally used my, 'free beef sandwich' gift card, from the Portillo's Yelp event last year, and also snagged a chopped salad - that's healthy right? I visit Portillo's locations often, usually at least twice a month. I am a big fan of their plant-based Garden Dog with all the toppings. It is one of my favorite meatless meals. Some of my friends order the Garden Dog even though they eat meat, they like the taste of the Garden Dog and enjoy it as a healthier option. Fries are great, cheese fries are even better, and the salads are tasty too. I enjoy the fish sandwich too. The lemon cake shake and chocolate cake shake are excellent for dessert. I've been to locations in many different parts of the country, and they never let me down. Now, if you're strictly looking for some dogs, you can't go wrong with Portillo's Chicago Dogs. I'd also give the fries a whirl as well. Would I go back? I do. All of the time, everytime and as much as I can. Portillo's is one of my favorite restaurants of all time. You can eat well, eat great and not break the bank. Portillo's is Chicago! Okay I am not a hot dog fan, but I also looked at the menu before going here and I wanted the Italian Beef and the Eclair Cake. I did order fries and a lemonade as well. Should have tried a milkshake, but sometimes I pretend to watch calories. The sandwich was surprisingly an illusion when viewed from the top as it was very full with beef and very tasty and greasy too. The fries were to be honest just frozen fries but they were done well and tasted good. The Eclair Cake was fantastic, I would go back again for this. It's been a long time since I've had Portillo's in Chicago, so couldn't really tell if it's similar or not. Ordered a regular beef sandwich and Chicago dog, along with onion rings and fries to share with others. Got my sandwich dry with gravy on the side and hot/sweet peppers. I liked being able to control the amount of moistness, so I continued to dunk my sandwich until it was all gone. I probably downed the dog in 3 big bites and it was great. Fries were Ok, but the onion rings were good. Overall, it definitely quenched my hot dog craving. The staff were really nice which I was impressed with. read more

I have been to Portillo's many times and have never been super impressed. I was meeting a friend for lunch and she picked the location. On this visit, like most I ordered the Italian beef dipped. Which means they dip the whole sandwich in broth so that the bread soaks it up. It my favorite way to order it cause it makes it juicer. But the meat was still dry and kinda chewy. I didn't order it this visit but the chocolate cake it really good. All of the staff were wearing mask but several of them were wearing them under their nose. And the table are spaced out for social distancing. Also there was an employee spraying tables and cleaning them as soon as customers left. read more

I never knew anything about Portillo's until a recent Yelp event there. They kindly gave everyone a free sandwich coupon so today was the day to use it. I'm not a meat eater so this wouldn't normally be somewhere I'd stop but I knew they had salads and a Garden Hot dog. My guest went with the Italian Beef sandwich. She enjoyed the roll and also how much beef was in the sandwich. I did go with the Garden dog and before anyone laughs it was actually pretty good. The fries where good and hot. The best thing on the last 75 degree day in November was the Chocolate Cake shake. I would go back just for that. The service was quick and friendly. The ambiance is fun and casual. read more

My mom asked me to bring her dinner and i obliged. I knew I did not want to go inside and checked the website to confirm they had a drive thru. I've passed by plenty of times and know about the restaurant. They had a live person standing in front of the drive thru with a tablet in the freezing cold taking orders. All places doing this is quite disturbing to me (yess even that one restaurant. they have 2 unused windows? lol anyway my order was taken quickly. i made it through the line fast as well. i don't like their hot dogs. there's a weird bite with the skin i just don't enjoy. their chili is bean based. i got traditional crinkle cut fries & melted cheese sauce. loveed it. my mom on the other hand lovesss their food ad goes often lol. she is carrying this review. also their menu is extensive and i appreciate that! . they were pleasant during our exchanges this restaurant is very popular, bred in chicago and now worldwide. they have dipped italian beef so if that's your thing definitely check them out! read more

If you are reading this review you must not be from or indulged in this true Chicago delicacy. Italian Beef - must try you will love it hands down. First timers get it with American Cheese, hot pepper (on the side if you are unsure on the spice...but this is a mix of carrots and pepper) or sweet peppers if that is your style. Get in SLIGHTLY dipped in the gravy you won't regret. Its messy so if you are trying to impress your date...impress them with chowing down and getting messy. Fries - the trick here is to get a side of cheese sauce...dip in cheese and ketchup and it's some good good fries. ASK for the pickle spears...they are free and good. Now you can't visit this place without getting a shake - chocolate is the go to but any will set you over on this Meal. I went with 9 others for work so it was a long order and I believe her name was Deb was so friendly and patient taking all of our orders. They all came out fairly quick too. I got the #5 and you have to get a side of cheese. The fries were really salty but everything was hot and very good. You also have the option of what size of fries and drink. I've eaten here plenty of times and like for my sandwich to be dry with the gravy on the side. Got my sandwiches tonight with no gravy on the side and not dry like I requested. When I told the guy he gave me the gravy on the side and disregarded my request for a dry sandwich, stating it was probably because of the wet meat. Again I'm used to eating here and the bread was WET. You sir will be a part of the downfall of fast-food restaurants. We the consumer are tired of being disregarded! Yummy food for a good value. I got the Portillo dog aka: Chicago-style dog and cheese fries. I really enjoyed everything I had and it was only $6.18. The menu is pretty extensive so I plan on trying something else when I go back. I didn't go at a peak time and the place was still crowded. My friend and I were finishing up our meal when a woman began HOVERING over our table waiting for us to leave. There were plenty of other open tables so this rubbed us the wrong way but it's no reflection on the workers or the establishment. All of the workers were fairly nice. Meh. I wasn't impressed. I've heard mixed review about Portillo's and Gad to check it out for myself. I didn't have a lot of time so I went inside and ordered my food to go. The inside of the restaurant has a really fun vibe and it was much bigger than I was expecting. They also have a drive-thru which is nice. I had the chili cheese dog with onions. The chili has beans. I know most does, but I prefer mine without the beans. I should have asked. The hotdog itself was just average. I did think the bun was an upgrade from your average hotdog bun. I don't get what all the hype is about. Maybe i ordered the wrong thing. First of all i generally don't love the half fast food, half dine-in model. Pick one I ordered a spicy chicken sandwich. I've had better. It was okay but i didn't love the sauce and the breading slipped right off the chicken which made the sandwich fall apart and it was hard to eat also with the setup they should put the drink dispensers on the outside because you have to wave someone down to get a refill. Portillo's is fine, but I just don't get all the hubbub surrounding this chain. Maybe someone who loves it can explain it to me, and fill me in on what I should order. Because every time I eat here, I'm always like, "That chili dog was alright" or "I guess I'll just eat these fries because they're sitting here." I don't especially like my food, but I don't not like it -- it's just fine. This Avon Portillo's is huge inside, with lots of seating. The dining room kind of reminds me of a restaurant that you would see in Disneyland or something: the area where you stand in line to order is big and snakes around to accommodate a large crowd. Fortunately, when we visited, it wasn't crowded at all and we were able to just step up and order right away. After you order, they call your number and you pick up your bags of food. (For some reason, they put our food in a bag even though we were dining in.) Another thing about the dining room: The music they play in the restaurant is about three notches too loud -- it's at that annoying level where it's just loud enough to make talking and hearing difficult. This might not be a good place to sit and eat if you want to be able to carry on a conversation. read more

Pretty disappointing. Hadn't been to a Portillos in years (Since living up by Chicago), used to love it, not so much now.. Had the Italian Beefs, one with peppers, onions, cheese, one plain. Order was incorrect to begin with (failed to get my drink and fries). Food took almost 15 minutes to get put out to us, even though there was no one in line inside the store and multiple workers able to do it. the manager eventually had to ask me about my order I was waiting so long. The fries and Drink issue got sorted before the sandwiches were available. The Meat was just barely above warm temp, and when they put cheese on one sandwich, it never even melted, just some shredded moz. And then, the peppers and onion also some how included cauliflower and some carrots in the sandwich!! What? My partner who likes almost any food had to pick off most of the greenery, pretty sad for a hot italian beef sandwich with peppers and Onions. At least the Fries were good, but certainly not worth the trip or cost. Maybe the burgers/hot dogs are still good, but I wont be coming back for the beefs. read more
