Stopped here on a food tour (another shout out to Chubby Fellow tours!) and have the cheesiest, most delicious empanada I've ever had. I'm a huge provolone fan from back in my cheesesteak-making days when I worked at a deli in high school, but you don't hear much about it or see it around too much. Do people think it's a lesser cheese? Something inferior to gruyere or mozzarella? That's not for me to say but what I can say is this empanada stuffed with provolone that I had at Portena was excellent. Not only was the cheese off the charts but the pastry was exceptional as well. You're gonna love anything you get at Portena.

Delicious empanadas! This one is chorizo

Woo babyyy!!! These empanadas are BOMBSY! I totes wished that I could have gone back to get more of them while I was in London, but I'm grateful that I discovered this place in general. Portena is a cute little Argentinean food shop serving up delicious baked goods, sandwiches, and empanadas. I found this spot while roaming through Borough Market. The smell was what got me. Freshly baked empanadas?! Count me IN! Those suckas were smellin' hella good! I had already grabbed a few things from a couple other shops in the market, so I limited myself to just one empanada so that my tummy wouldn't explode on me. They had so many different delicious flavors to choose from! It made it so hard for me to choose just one. But in the end, I went with the chorizo. Daaayuum! It was so friggin' GOOD y'all! I definitely should have gotten another one, but I had already left and a line had formed. These empanadas are pretty large, and a great size for the price. The chorizo was nice and tender with a little kick of spice. The crust was crispy on the outside but very soft on the inside and kind of melted away as I devoured it all. That empanada was so moist. Woooo LAWD. I feel like I'm having withdrawals. Regrets. I could have happily scarfed down about another 4 of those if I hadn't already been eating. The owner was so sweet! She was the one who suggested that I try the chorizo and it was a major hit. They have some great meal deals that include wine and beer combinations specials, and they have a cute covered are where you can sit and enjoy your meal. Unlike many of the other businesses in the market, Portena is open every day until 11pm at night (they're closed on Sundays). This was definitely a winner in my book. Borough Market has some great little gems and Portena is one of them. If you're wandering around in the market or are craving for empanadas, Portena is a must stop! They're empanadas are dynamite.

I love Borough Market! There are so many different types of food stalls to choose from! My family and I are especially drawn to Porteña for their Argentinian street food and have gone here each time we have visited London over the years. The empanadas are authentic and delicious! They offer several flavors - beef, chicken, ham and cheese, spinach & ricotta, provolone cheese & caramelized onions, and margherita! On our most recent visit, we ended up getting a dozen for €26 and decided to get 1/2 vegetarian (my daughter and I do not eat meat) and 1/2 with meat. The dough is stamped so we easily identified the filling of each empanada. My favorite was probably to provolone cheese & caramelized onion! During our last visit, we brought along one of my daughter's friends who lives in London but had not been to the market before. She became an instant fan of Porteña. No doubt, she will be back soon and I hope we can come back someday.

Really enjoyed the served hot empanadas at Portena. With so many options across the market this booth jumped out. Had beef and chorizo empanadas and both are delicious. A little heat in both. If searching for a bite hit Porteña with confidence.

Best. Empanadas. Ever. I was blown away by the superb flavours and high quality of the empanadas at Portena in Borough Market. Do not pass by this stall without trying at least one, you won't regret it!

Cool place for very good Empanadas! I had one Empanada with Provolone cheese and one with Beef and they were both good. For £8.50 you can get two Empanadas and a beer which is a good deal considering the location. Service is friendly.

    Steak Sandwich

Delicious! The perfect soft ciabatta bread, yummy grilled steak! Would come back to Borough Market just to eat the steak sandwich! Perfectly simple sandwich.

Quillmes now. I've missed my train.

One of the best place where to eat empanadas in London in pure argentinian style. And the beer too, of course.

I had tried most of the traders before, and I have weirdly been craving fish and chips for awhile, so I headed over to Saltwood to give them a try. On offer were fish and chips (£6.50), calamari and chips (£5), Pescado Fritto (£8). I was sorely tempted by the Pescado Fritto (mixed fish fried in polenta), but I didn't have enough to add the chips, so I opted for good old fish and chips. I'm really glad I did. The fish was perfectly cooked. It flaked where it was supposed to flake, and the beer batter was insanely crispy and delicious. And the chips? Triple cooked, so they were slightly crispy on the outside, but deliciously fluffy and soft in the middle. The mushy peas were more of a pea puree, but given the state of the fish and chips, I didn't care. Also the homemade tartar sauce was some of the best I've had. I've had fish and chips at different places around the UK. Most of the time, fish and chips in London just can't compare to the seaside. But Saltwood have it down. This is probably the best fish and chips I've eaten in London so far. I will definitely have it again. I'd love to try the Pescado Fritto, but with the fish and chips being that good, it will be hard to break the chain. Unless I can find someone to go with me to share...

The friendly bloke who runs this stand apparently operates a few other ones around London including the halloumi and mezze stand on the end of Leather Lane Market. Whilst chatting with him as my wrap was being prepared, I discovered that Victus & Bibo used to be a juice and coffee stand in the mornings and a food prep area for other stands. Currently, they're sorting the inside of this stand to eventually be a breakfast stop for coffees, juices, and porridge, as well as continuing to serve lunch. In fact, rumour has it they've netted a World Barista Champion to serve up the java! As far as the actual grub goes, I was merrily satisfied with my 'lamb bread': ground meat, veg, sauces, with grilled halloumi for one quid extra. It's quite the affordably filling lunch at £4.50 that won't leave you feeling like you just consumed a gut bomb (I'm looking at you, Chilango).

When we visited they only had one option, the amazing halloumi salad (you could choose salad with spicy chicken+ halloumi...or just with halloumi.) As there was only one option, the line moved forward pretty quickly as the two ladies behind the counter quickly threw together amazing salads for all the hungry folks in the queue. I loved it. The salad itself is tasty, the humus is gorgeous, they give you a good splash of yogurt, and both the halloumi and the chicken were perfect.

I'd really wanted samphire and tartar sauce but he'd run out of samphire. The burgers were excellent, despite being fried in batter, they still had a great crab flavour and it went well with the wasabi mayo (can't comment on the other one, my dad all but inhaled it). Coincidentally, we ended up there on Sunday, and I ended up going again, but he still didn't have samphire... It was a popular combination! And each time I was turning up around 3/4pm, well into the day. So I tried the pomegranate combination, which again was fantastic. The following Friday, I ended up at Rupert Street market for lunch with colleagues, and guess who was there? Crabbieshack! Did he have Samphire and Tartar sauce? yes to the first but no to the second! I still ended up with a burger though... 4 crabs in 3 meetings. But the following week, Douglas kept some aside for me and I finally got what I craved. Worth the wait? You better believe it! He's not always at Rupert Street Market, but can be found at Kerb at various locations (check their website). I voted for him at the British Street Food awards and he's just won the London heat! Don't actually know how many crabs I've eaten from him now... just that I will probably be eating from there again the next time I see the stand!

It had about 5 or 6 stalls and immediately I spotted crab. It's hard to find good a good fish sometimes but I love food that is quite unique so the crab burger was on that I had to get. A normal crab burger on its own was £7.50. But pricey but a double was £11 so I thought what the hey and leave the fries and just double up. A crab deep fried in battle. The chilli coriander and wasabi Mayo defo gives it an edges I I could go for this sauce. It was very good. Very messy though. Can't help feel some street food vendors should show a bit more value with a side added for free or a more reasonable price. Seeing as I've been to all over America I know you could get this and fries for about £10 at most. Expensive lunch. It was near the city workers so might be a target but it was very good. I'd love to try their crab salad for £7 and see how much meat you get with that.
