Benito's Hat - Mexican Near Me - London, XGL

With the prospect of an even closer Benitos Hat then Goodge Street and the Covent Garden location - I arrived at work with not one but two flyers from my co-workers, informing me that today it opened. They know I love Benitos. I'm very happy to say that the quality of the food and service is just as high as it is at either of the other two locations. It does indeed make more sense to start at the left and move to the right, which is the opposite to what I am conditioned to from going to Goodge Street so often. I really like the additional seating downstairs, I hope they make more use of the space on the walls to inform people that it's there and there is another Benitos just five minutes away. I had my usual black beans, rice, chicken and everything else and was very pleased at the mixture in the burrito. Sometimes it's so juicy, it trickles down the arm as you try to eat it - not this time! I look forward to other temporary additions to the menu, like the lamb option spotted last week Goodge Street. read more

The tacos were tasty and got the job done (I got the veggie and my friend got the steak and pork). The veggie ones were great. My friend said the steak was better than pork. Not the BEST tacos I've had but considering we're in London and not Mexico, they were pretty good!! Tasted like a fresher version of Chipotle & a little cheaper too. This is a place I frequent for lunch from work. It fills my stomach, can be spicy, and is ~£6 or a burrito. Service is fast as well. But why is this is a 3 and not a 4 or 5? The tortilla they wrap the burrito in tends to be soggy as they don't spend enough time toasting it when it's busy (read lunch time). Also, the size of the burrito has reduced over time and I would probably recommend the burritos from Tortilla more than the ones from Benito's Hat Oxford circus. read more

Big boy burritos. :) Often I get thinner, sloppier versions with less flavour and a tiny amount of rice and beans. Not here. You order at the counter where someone guides you through the choices. One thing I never get is why guacamole is charged extra? Is avocado that expensive? Anyway, I don't like guacamole, so not concerned. :) I always order the pork, which is always flavoursome and the salsa I chose had the right amount of spicy kick. I don't enjoy food that's so hot it makes me want to down a bucket of water. My friend went for the chicken and declared it bland; but then again it's chicken. My burrito came with tortilla chips that were crispy and delicious, a nice extra. The prices are good (6 quid for a big burrito is alright with me), they have decent beers, a happy hour (5-7pm) with 2 for 1 drinks (great margaritas, love the frozen strawberry one) and the staff is lovely. Plus: their tres leches cake is yummy! Save some space for dessert. ;) read more

I had an amazing chicken burrito and really good 100% blue agave tequila margaritas made with fresh squeezed lime juice. Don't miss the watermelon marg!! I met the "British" owner who is partners with a native Mexican and they are very committed to using only fresh ingredients, which can prove challenging in December when a good avocado is impossible to find in London. The menu is "create your own" (much like the BIG BOY competition, Chipotle) but the experience is much more fun and feels less like a chain (even though they now have 4 restaurants.) Mexican food has been notoriously BAD in London--maybe all this competition is good for the consumers! Go figure. Check out Benito's Hat--it's well worth it. read more

The food here always leaves me stuffed but wishing I could eat more as it's so tasty. They fill your burrito to the brim and wrap it up to keep it warm. I personally think that you need to sit down with a knife and fork with one of these bad boys, so I often head back to the office and make a huge mess over my desk. It's more than worth it. What's this? Another Burrito spot reviewed by Nathan D? I do eat other food, I promise! Burrito from here was great. I supercharged mine by going for double meat! Delicious pork with an extra portion of slow braised chicken. I even got some peppers on there for 'shitsandgigs' - something I'll be repeating next time for sure because it was AWESOME! It's a chain, and a pretty safe bet for a good burrito in London. The close proximity to Oxford Circus meant suckers on their lunch breaks were queueing to get in, but the line seemed to move pretty quickly! I'm not sure really why it isn't a 5* review, maybe it is because this place is consistently good, so I expect something mind-blowing for a 5. It's not bad, but their delivery service is hugely inconsistent. We order from these guys pretty often at my office, and while their "Mexican" food doesn't compare to what you can get in SF or LA, it does the job. I like their steak tacos with cilantro, onion, and salsa. Unfortunately, I only get those about half the time I order them! No joke, their kitchen screws up my order approximately 50% of the time. I realize that it's tough to assemble a lot of tacos very quickly for the big office orders, but c'mon, it's 4 ingredients! Right now I'm sitting here eating a carnitas taco with no salsa and chips with some horrible orange sauce that they've passed off as salsa, when I ordered steak tacos and chips and guac. If they could just deliver me the food I ordered, I'd give them 4 stars, but as it is, they're barely maintaining 3. read more

Loving Bentio's Hat at the moment. It's all about the taste! Happy hour drinks are 2-for-1 and it doesn't have to be the same drink like some places. I had the chance to order off the tapas menu and had the taco platter. It is much bigger than you think it will be! I had requested a side of plain black beans for a vegan option and was also happy to find the chayote and other vegetables were cooked but still crunchy. It was practically empty when we were there at NYE, but the staff were very friendly and kept a tab open for us. They didn't have any of their sauces out (maybe because it was NYE?), but we were able to get a nice bowl of it from the counter. read more

My partner and I went to Benito's Hat the other day, since we're both really getting into burritos. They are a bit more expensive than Daddy Donkey and Adobo (both of which I adore), but it's right near my uni so is really convenient to get to. Unfortunately for me, I wasn't as impressed as other reviewers. I got a veggie burrito with the works, and the hottest salsa. The vegetables put me off a bit, just huge chunks that weren't sauteed as much as say Daddy Donkey's (which are also in strips and makes them easier to eat). The guacamole on it was fine, nothing too special. In all the burrito was just okay. The salsa was not that spicy, which I don't appreciate. Hands down I would go to other burrito places. My partner said he thought the steak was slightly nicer here than at Daddy Donkey but in all he preferred the Daddy. My guess is that if you love your meat burritos, Benito's might be okay for you, but if you do veggie, then go elsewhere; there are cheaper places around. read more

This place is fine, that about sums it up for me. My partner and I went here a few weeks ago when we suddenly got hungry and needed something quick, cheap, and satisfying. We were walking by and said, 'Why not?'. The service was quick and cheerful and the price was fine. The food itself was good but there was nothing outstanding about it. Some of the meat was well spiced (I think the beef?) and the chicken less so. The wrap wasn't toasted so it wasn't anything special. The portion size was okay but I could have done with it being a bit bigger and with more fillings. I think if I worked near here, I might use it as a reliable and 'good enough' place to grab lunch but I wouldn't take a trip out there. read more

I had a brilliant time at the exhibition opening of "Hats Off to Mexican Street Photography" at the newest Benito's Hat last night (DISCLOSURE: I helped curate the "Hats Off ..." show). Wait a second ... huh? Exhibition opening? At a Mexican restaurant? That's right. With the opening of the new Benito's Hat on Great Castle Street near Oxford Circus, the now three-strong chain of London-based Mexican restaurants is promising not only to serve tasty Latin inspired dishes but also to share the visual vibrancy of Mexico with its customers. I think this commitment to display cool images on the resto's walls is a brilliant use of space (there's a cosy lil lounge area in the downstairs of the Great Castle Street location) and demonstrates a commendable commitment to Mexican artists. Neato. Particularly in the case of the "Hats Off" show which features works by photographers from one of Mexico City's most impoverished communities. But enough about art! The food was equally wow last night. I've been keeping an eye on Benito's since the first opened on Goodge Street a few years ago. Since then, I think they've come a long way to offer great food at great value. Case in point: tamales. Not a usual on the menu, they were provided last night and were dee-lish-alicious! If you find 'em on the menu when you visit get 'em. Of course, the taquitos, tacos, tostadas and all the regular stuff on the menu is tasty too. And having one of my favourite beers (Negra Modelo) as well as a very impressive range of Mexican beers and killer cocktails is certainly worth mentioning as well. This was my first visit to a Benito's Hat; I came to attend the opening party of the 'Hats off to Mexican Street Photography' photo exhibition, which is taking place in Benito's newest branch in Great Castle Street. Besides being very impressed by the photography and the fact that the photographers were from one of the poorest parts of Mexico City, I need to say a word or two about the food - in a nutshell, it was really, really good. The tamales in particular were excellent, as was the very tasty pulled pork, which was miles better than anything I've had before. I gather that the owner Ben and his wife spent a lot of time putting together the individual dishes for Benito's Hat - their primary goal was to offer truly authentic Mexican food - and it really shows; the food is fresh, with quality ingredients and served by staff who really know what they are talking about. There are lots of fast food places in London but you sometimes feel as though they are all the same; they leave you with a full stomach and disappointed taste buds. Benito's really proved to me that it is one of the few standout places where you can get an inexpensive meal that does not compromise on taste and quality and really, really hits the spot. I think I've found my new go-to place when in central London and in need of a quick but tasty bite to eat. read more

More food than you can shake a stick at for the price and quite tasty when it arrived - full of flavour and well presented. Only disappointment was the poor service. Shown to our seats, given menus and were then ignored completely until I had to go to the register to ask if we could order a drink. If going my advice is to order less then you think you'll need. When we arrived it was empty except for a couple girls lounging around the front tables. Apparently, there was a new guy working. He took my order and my nachos grande did not contain any refried beans or sour cream! A woman took over our order and my spouse got the oregano and feta sweetcorn and also the pomegranate and chipotle slaw. Our margaritas came just in time as we were finishing our meal. This is my favourite burrito place in London. I usually go to the one in Covent Garden. I was tickled to find one here in Oxford Circus. Big, full burritos. They serve Negra Modelo, which is one of my favourite Mexican beers. And they throw in a few tortilla chips, too. Good, warm, and delicious. read more

Very good burrito - nothing fancy but solid burrito. There is a standard set of meat to choose from. My favourite is chicken but beef is also good. There are some seats to eat onsite with some cocktail menu which is quite rare for a fast food place. Solid choice for a quick bite in the tourist filled area read more

I really truly wish I had come to Benito's Hat sooner!! My Mexican food cravings in London started getting out of control and one day I found myself a block away from Benito's Hat and boy am I happy I went there! I got a veggie naked bowl and IT WAS SO GOOD. So satisfying. They don't skimp on any ingredients and you get free tortilla chips. The service was great and they have free lemon water! I went with my family and for my whole family to thoroughly enjoy their meal is kind of a big deal... and Benito's Hat came through. As a native Southern Californian living in London, I was in heaven. The flavors are delicious and the spicy sauce was right up my alley. They have beers and margaritas that were incredibly tempting (and happy hour!!). This place definitely blows Chipotle out of the water for me and next time I'm in London I will be eating at Benito's again! read more

Visiting from America, my mother and I were looking for some good food. We had high hopes after looking at the reviews. However, as frequent authentic Mexican diners, we were very disappointed. Food is beyond bland as if they didn't use seasoning at all! Guac tasted like water. The only good part was the margaritas! Hopefully they get a lesson on Mexican spices. read more

I like this place, they've got gluten-free corn tortillas for tacos, and overall I can get more ingredients in my chicken tacos than at Chipotle, at about a pound or two cheaper. Only thing is I'm not sure they put as much quantity in as I'd like - I want my tacos stuffed to the brim but the staff here aren't really willing to do that (I asked once and they almost charged me extra). I've been here a couple times now, and always enjoyed it. The service is really good, and i'm always greeted with a smile. What i like most about this place is that it's simple, but good, fresh, and filling food, at a really reasonable price. That being said, i've only come here in the evenings for dinner...for those days when i'm not looking to spend too much, and find it to be great value for money. The evening ambiance is really good considering that this place is also a takeaway lunch spot...they play music and light candles...even serve some tasty cocktails. The cocktails (margaritas only) are decently priced, and you can get 2 for 1 if you come for happy hour (between 5 and 7pm). Overall good spot! read more

I'm a big fan of Mexican food. And I've been very excited about the rise of the burrito/wrap joints in central London. Really liked Mooli's, for instance, for flavoursome wrap action. But this? I was very disappointed with Benito's Hat. I sought it out after a recent rave review in Time Out (some of the best burritos in town loved the soft, floury tortilla, the freshness of the fiery salsa brava and the black beans, which were authentically flavoured with avocado leaves.) But my experience was anything but like that. Now, it might be because I'm veggie (noticeably nicolearios' review is similar and she ordered veggie), but I don't think so. Sure, the vegetables were bland and a bit stewed (rather than sizzling fresh). But there wasn't much good to say about the rest of the construction carried across to the meat-eaters menu also. Guacamole looked and tasted pre-bought, pre-prepped, rather than the fresh experience I was expecting. If it was made that day, it had been over-blended and coriander, lime etc. had long-since become bland green mush. Worse were the beans stewing in a chafing pot, they were bland and tasteless, and the rice which simply added again flavourless extra padding. Sure, Benito's Hat's burritos fill you up no end and will do for a late-night drunken stomach padding (but on that basis, I'd still rather go for a fry up or maybe Hummus Bros in the same part of town for the same end result). But the flavour? It reminds me more of the one time I went to Chimichangas in Leicester Square. And far less of the time I've spent in Mexico. Worse still, there's a suspicious chain-wannabeness of all of these new wrap places. They can't wait to roll out their menu and become the next Pret A Manger. It's too simple, too fast food, too gloopy and too bright interior colours. There's no soul, at least to the Great Castle St joint. And I have an intrinsic mistrust of these shiny, new places that are built from kits. It's five-year-business-plan over flavour. (And if anyone does have any great burrito/Mexican recommendations in London currently that aren't like this, and ideally do like veggies, let me know!) read more

THE place to go to satisfy my burrito cravings. Cheaper than Chipotle, and the burritos are huge and very filling. I'm vegetarian, and I always order the grilled veggie with guacamole. Tastes like, well, what american burritos taste like; with awesome salsa. The lime juice is good too, but if you want a drink I suggest you get one of the can sodas instead; lime juice is overpriced. This is the third outlet of this small Mexican chain, following one in Covent Garden and another in Goodge Street. The food is passable, although I do think the burritos on offer in Covent Garden are slightly better. On the day I went, drinks service was incredibly slow with the bartender instead choosing to spend his time attempting to impress some girls in front of me and my friend. It's quite small but the space has been utilised pretty well although when the lunchtime period hits, sitting in to eat is not an enjoyable experience as the queue snakes past your table. read more

MEXICAN FOOD! YAY! Okay maybe "Mexican food" is a stretch, me coming from California the 2nd home to REAL Mexican food......it's just burritos, tacos, and bowls here. But even though the variety is small it is still very good. The salsa is actually hot...which anyone who knows England knows is tough to find! Most of the so-called "hot" salsas here in the UK...is not even equivalent to mild in the US or Mexico. But here the Mild is actually Mild, and the Hot is HOT! The Guacamole is fresh and very tasty! The meat is good too. MOST DEFINITELY the best burrito shop I've been to in the UK. An absolute MUST if your having spice withdrawals from being in the UK.
