Breddo's are a staple of the Streetfeast street food scene and it was here that I first (second, third, fourth, continue....) experienced them.
Simply amazing tacos. Relatively cheap, fun and so incredibly tasty.
This was my second visit to Breddo's Soho site. The first was such an unexpected (ly poor) experience that I wanted to visit again to make sure that the first was a glitch.
It wasn't.
You arrive into the site through the slim entrance on Kingly Street, still one of my favourite places in London. A great mix of bars, restaurants and shops and I have some happy memories having worked around the corner for a few years.
Greeting was friendly enough, we had booked, this was Saturday night and the assumption was that it would be busy. My girlfriend is a fan of sitting at counters in restaurants, with the assumption being you can see your food being prepared. This was not the case as we were led downstairs into the basement and sat at the bar. The first thing we encountered was the barman spilling an entire cocktail he was shaking over the couple who were sitting immediately next to us. Amidst the initial chaos, our server kindly took our coats. There is seemingly nowhere to hang your coat so this kindness was well received.
Dishes are meant to be shared and as a result there are small plates in front of you when you arrive so that you might decant from a large plate into your own. Plates are generally chipped. Mine, however, was so badly broken that there was a large chunk missing and a sharp edge remained. I asked for a new plate and the waitress unenthusiastically accommodated this requested. The situation was so ridiculous even the couple next to us, (on the other side, the dry ones) were laughing.
Next came the exciting part, the menu. As I mentioned I have been here before and had learned from my first encounter to stay away from the large "main" sharing plates. What should be very exciting dishes are in sad reality rather boring. Under seasoned, pricey and ultimately not what you should be in Breddos for. With this experience in the bag I suggested we stick to tacos. We shared two of each taco on the menu. In addition we went with nachos and guac(amole) for £8!? crab with bone marrow and as a side we went for aubergine. I had actually identified the pork skewer as the dish I was looking to most. I'd seen this featured on the Breddo's Instagram feed in the week and I was excited about this. Sold out. Saturday night pre-8pm and they had sold out of an advertised dish. Not ideal.
Our first dish was served ahead of our drinks. First up was the guacamole. To be clear, I love guacamole so I was excited to get stuck into some food. What we were served was boring, under seasoned and terrifically expensive based on this. Drinks followed and in no particular order came our dishes.
The tacos here are amazing, a little expensive but worth it. I'm not going to suggest which ones you should choose. You should have them all. You'll regret it if you don't!
The crab and marrow dish was, again, disappointing. Bland and expensive. Our side dish arrived after all of our other dishes. The aubergine was disgusting. Burnt skin on the outside, mushy on the inside. A real low point.
What was strange about the atmosphere of the place was simply how many people were complaining. I can honestly say I have never been in a restaurant where I have seen so many independent parties complaining about the experience they've had.
Next up was the bill. £76. £76 for two drinks 8 tacos and a generally poor experience. We begrudgingly paid and asked for our coats. Our coats were retrieved from the floor where they had been thrown by the team upon taking them and we left, vowing to never return.
In summation, if you want to try a legitimately fabulous taco experience, avoid the Breddo's restaurant and visit their pop up stall in Spitalfields market. Bags of taste, bags of charm and everything that their restaurants (certainly Soho) lack. read more
