I had high hopes for Wahaca. As not only an American, but also as a Southern Californian, two weeks without Mexican food was really really really really really tough on me. I get it, Mexico is 5,454 miles from London so they aren't going to have taco shops on every corner and as many Mexican restaurants as they have cars, but c'moooooon!
Wahaca is one of the best rated (and one of the few) Mexican restaurants in the city so my boyfriend and I decided we would give it a shot. My first impression was good as the restaurant was decently crowded which made me think that the food was going to be tasty. I loved the ambiance, especially the book shelves with fun cookbooks to browse through. This about where my positive feelings ended..
First of all, we had to pay for chips and salsa which should be a crime. But hey, we ordered because no Mexican meal is complete without them. There was not nearly enough salsa to go with the amount of chips brought out, which is sad because there weren't enough chips for two people. It didn't really matter that there aren't seconds on the salsa though because it was not good at all. In fact, I'm not sure one can call it salsa as it was super sweet with no hint of spice in the least.
We ordered a few tacos to share: Cactus & Courgette, Chicken Tinga and Ancho Chicken. We didn't like any of them. The flavors were really weird and had me making the face that one makes when biting into a lemon. Truly, I'm not sure this is actually Mexican food....?
If you are local to London, please do not take my word for it because I am extremely spoiled living only a few miles from the boarder of Mexico. But if you are from the United States, I'd suggest just waiting until you get home for Mexican food and enjoy the other amazing cuisines in London. read more
