This is it. The one. The burrito in London that wouldn't go out of business in San Francisco. I had a 'just-OK' burrito here early on, and didn't go back for a while. Well, I don't know what's happened lately, but every burrito I've gotten here recently has kicked ass. Maybe it's because I'm going earlier and beating the rush. Maybe it's because the ingredients are very good quality. Maybe it's because they don't skimp on the good stuff (meat, guacamole, pico de gallo, fajita veggies, etc). They roll fatties. In fact, I've had a few Freebird burritos fall apart on me. That's OK. If my burrito must fail, let it fail due to its ambition. I've often lamented the politeness of competing burritos, so let it be known that Freebird suffers from no such good manners. Lions, and tigers, and bears, OH MY! I can't believe the burrito that I had today. I thought Tortilla was going to be the best I had in London, even though it was Chipotle style mexican, but I was wrong. Freebird is the best. It's not an actual restaurant just a stand and I almost went past it. It is right on the corner of Rupert and Brewer. Yellow sign. In front of Snog. I'm not sure if they are there everyday or the hours, but it seems like lunch time. I was there today around 2pm. It's obviously not the best Mexican I've ever had, but it is on the comparison level of San Diego. The only place I've been to here that I can say that to. Great flavors. The black beans. The chicken. Very great tortilla as well. Hot sauce is good, but I wish the hot was a little hotter. I'll probably go back once a week, except I'm going back the next two days to try the carne asada and carnitas. No place to sit immediately around since it's a stand, but I really don't care that much. I'm honestly excited to tell people back home that I found a Mexican place. So stoked. read more

Ten years ago, I nearly moved to London to open a chain of burrito stands. Nice to know that my business idea was a good one. Even an OK burrito is pretty damned good. Particularly on a Thursday after a two-night-bus Wednesday evening This is a 4* burrito for London, though just a 3* for San Fran. Street market style with excellent carnitas, and grilled tortillas. Two types of salsa: One pico and one tomatillo-medium. Totally decent (Hass Avocado-based) guacamole. £5 for a burrito, £5.50 with guac. And everything's OK, but really just OK. Like many of the new burrito start-ups. Beans and rice were a little flat and flavourless, the carnitas were absolutely stuffed with flavour, however. It might be nice if the staff spent a little time learning to roll, though. The burrito should resemble a tube more than a blob wrapped in tinfoil. read more

Great customer service, great product, great price! This is the very definition of 5 stars! There are 3 easy steps displayed for you to follow and if you have a question about anything the staff is very friendly. I had the burrito with black beans, pork, all the fixings plus guacamole (50p extra) all for only £5.50. My friend had the burrito with re-fried beans, chicken and all the fixings. We were both immensely pleased with our selections. Of course, that doesn't mean I won't be sampling other variations upon my many return trips. I'm in love. Well as much as a man can love chipotle marinated steak, aromatic rice, crunchy fajita peppers and onions, spicy salsa, soothing sour cream, sharp cheddar, and creamy guacamole all wrapped up neatly in a steamed tortilla. And let's be honest, that's a lot of love. On the recommendation of Eamon B, I paid Freebird a visit one sunny London day. I'd been riding for a couple of hours and to say I was starving was an understatement. Luckily, the sheer size of the burrito I was made took the edge of the gnawing in my belly. Once I started eating it I was in burrito heaven. While standing in the sun chowing down on this beast, a cyclist from Belgium struck up a conversation with me about riding in London. After a couple minutes I noticed him eyeing the succulent meat I was in the process of devouring. I was torn...do I play a good British host and share? or do I run away screaming "it's mine...my precious!!!!". Sadly I must admit I opted for the latter one after making hurried excuses and whispering the aforementioned line to myself...I don't want Belgian's thinking I'm crazy. They have great beer. Anyways, more to the point Freebird is one of the best burritos I've ever had and definitely the best in London I've tried to date. Definitely the best burrito i've had in London so far. Not sure you're going to find better. Cheap, quick and delicious, that's why i eat one a week and i haven't gained any weight so they must be healthy. Just remember to always pay the little extra for the guac. read more

The usual loud music and unintelligible staff calling requests for fillings at you but this place is really small so expect to be rubbing against a stranger as you ask the server to repeat the choices .... Food is OK. Price is OK for London. It's outside the train station so not a great location for travellers. Overall pretty average. read more

NYC spoils you with their amazing selection of vendies serving good food at good value. Since returning to London I am a huge fan of the growing street vendor scene in London... Freebird Burritos is my go-to place for lunch when I am STARVING and have skipped breakfast. They are huge, so don't be surprised if you cant finish the whole thing in 1 sitting, but they're amazing! The only side-effect are the yawns I get around 4pm, longing for a nap whilst sitting at my desk, but if you're prepared to fight the zzzzzzz's, definitely give this place a try! Pretty decent burritos at a reasonable price. They popped up on Goodge Street the other day so we opted to try them instead of walking all the way to Holborn for an Adobo burrito :) I prefer it to Benito's Hat, though I'm not sure if I like it as much as Daddy or Adobo. For how close it is to my uni I would opt to go here instead of the aforementioned two. The vegetables and beans were very good and the hot salsa was nice and spicy, just enough for me :) What made it not as good however was that I didn't especially love the guacamole. From spending my entire Summer in San Fran I tasted many burritos and fell in love with them. I knew I would miss them lots when I returned but was overjoyed to find freebird. They are the closest I have had to a San Fran one which I sorely miss. I usually go for ether steak or carnitas, but on my visit I had a bit of steak. To say it was good was an understatement. I was whisked back to Californian nirvana with each mouthful and shall have to get some business cards printed if it means I might get one of these beauties for free. But to be fair they are reasonably priced and in times like these its nice to get a relatively healthy, gut busting lunch for a fiver. read more

Oh, Mexican food in London, how elusive art thou. Despite several recommendations of 'amazing' places I find myself constantly disappointed (Taqueria, anyone?). I'm starting to lose hope! I got a glimmer of it back with Freebird. Freebird works off of the Chipotle (amazing American burrito chain) school of thought: Take a tortilla the size of a newborn and stick it chock full of rice, beans, tomatoes, salsa, guacamole, cheese, lettuce and if you fancy it, sour cream; wrap it up in tin foil and present it like a compact log. I love Chipotle, so they were off to a good start. Taking a bite, the tortilla was nice and fresh. I'm not sure if they make them in-house, but I wouldn't be surprised. It was very good. The other ingredients were tasty as well. Even the salsa had a good kick to it. I'm also glad they had a black bean option. Finding black beans in London has proved trying to me in the past. I usually have to go to Whole Foods for them. Sooooo much better than pinto beans. All in all, a tasty little concoction. It's not the best I've ever had, but it would certainly do for a drunken 4th meal if I'm ever in Soho on a Saturday and feeling vulnerable. (That said, I hope they keep late hours. I can't find them online. They would make a killing around 2 am on Wardour) Or at least until Chipotle finally comes to London. read more

If the patient and neverending queue of Qype partygoers at 93 Feet East a few months ago is anything to go by, Freebird have burrito making down pat. I was astounded by how long people were prepared to wait in line for food and unsure I'd ever get a look inthankfully I managed to slip in wielding a camera and tried out a veggie burrito. I'm pleased to report it was very nice, but unfortunately I wasn't blown away. Now, I realise the veggie burrito is a different beast to the animal variety, but it's not a bad benchmark for overall food skills. A bit of TLC in the vegetarian department shows an overall sense of care and attention to detail I think, and in this case I'm not sure I understand what all the fuss is about. I'd like to give Freebird another chance as on home turf and with ample ingredients (they were running low on a few things by the time I got to the stall) they may yet convert me. I first learned about this place when my boss ducked out to grab some lunch and returned with a Freebird burrito. After 2 bites he declared to everyone in the office that this was the best burrito he ever had, much better than his (former) regular burrito place. Needless to say, I went there a few days later to see what my boss was so impressed about. I went there around 11.30 so it was quiet and the guy making the burritos let me try both the chicken and the beef as I could not decide which one I wanted. I settled for the beef and was treated to a very, very good burrito with fresh ingredients and well-seasoned meat. I was equally impressed with the chicken burrito that I had on my next visit; the meat was very tender. Alltogether, a very good deal for a fiver. read more

Sticking two fingers up to those supermarkets that sell 'fajita chicken wraps' at lunchtime, this is how you SHOULD eat spicy chicken (or steak, or pork, or veggies). Wrapped up with rice, beans or onion and peppers, with fresh homemade guacamole, salsa, sour cream, cheese and lettuce, all for a fiver (sounds a lot but you should see the size of the things). Everything is fresh, yummy and put together in front of you so you can see exactly what you're getting. I played safe and chose the chicken although the carnitas (seasoned pork braised for 8 hours) were recommended to me before I found out they hadn't brought that option to the Qype summer party. Poor fellas: the three of them in their short assembly line at their mobile stall were absolutely beleaguered by about four hundred ravenous Qypers. Admittedly, I'd made use of the free bar by this point so my taste buds might not have been working at maximum efficiency. Nevertheless, I got a massive burrito stuffed with everything: choice of black or refriend beans, rice, salsa, steak (or chicken or veg). It was seriously big, and seriously filling. The search for good Mexican is a constant challenge in London, but youn could do a lot worse than Freebird for a takeaway burrito. read more

Definitely better than the other mexican burritos in London town! The carne asada (steak meat) was really tender, moist and seasoned pretty good. The usual fillings blended with the meat scrumptiously and wrapped nicely in a fresh warm flour tortilla. The portion is about the same as that of Chilango and Toritilla but like I said FB is better tasting and value for the money. read more

I firmly believe that cheap mexician food can be fabulous mexician food, and Freebird is proof. For 5 quid you get a mouth-watering burrito so massive you need two hands to hold it. AMAZING! The hot sauce is like fire sauce---after the first bite I screamed "wow that's spicy!" But that's the way I like it: almost too spicy to continue eating but just spicy enough to bring out all the other flavors. I love that they allow you to get two types of meats in your burrito, because sometimes a combo of carnitas and beef is just the ticket. The service is quick and friendly. Best burrito I've had in London for sure! First off my chicken burrito was absolutely MASSIVE. Came with all the essentials - marinated chicken, rice, refried beans (they have black beans too), pico-de-gallo, sour cream, guacamole, salsa, green chilli puree, cheddar cheese and lettuce - all wrapped in a grilled tortilla. Took about 60 seconds to spin up each burrito and is only a few blocks from work.... perfect! Overall - tasted great with the right amount of spice. I would recommend picking only one or two of the fillings (salsa, guac, etc.) as mine was a little too overloaded in the middle, but I guess that's my fault. I also thought the rice & beans were a tad bland compared to the most elite burrito shops back in Cali...but again...Freebird is outstanding for London! read more

YUCK! I have been prompted to write this posting after a thoroughly disappointing first visit to the FREEBIRD burrito stall in Exmouth Market. Admittedly, having read reviews on various sites I had high expectations. But this was without a shadow of a doubt, disgusting, and therefore the worst burrito I've ever had. FREEBIRD steak burrito The best thing was the 2 women serving - they were smiley and friendly - and - possibly Mexican. The steak had so much gristle I had to spit a fair amount of it out. It looked like part of an inner tube was in there. It was inedible and insulting. Furthermore it had hardly any flavour, and the flavour it did have was reminiscent of some stodgy english stew. Yuck. I love my food spicy. I asked for the hottest sauce but it had hardly any kick. They had no sliced chillies or jalapenos. The rice was too stodgy and tasteless. The whole thing was stodgy and tasteless. It was like a school dinner, i was disappointed and angry. Given previous reviews I can only think that they've gone downhill or the fans like the english stew style burrito. read more

I am not much of a fan of freebird burritos. I appreciate that they are cheaper than the local competition, but that is the only reason I can think of for going there. If you can afford an extra 50p, go to El Burrito. If you can stretch to £1 more then go to Benito's Hat. There's no need to pay £1.50 more at Chipotle when Benito's Hat is nearby, but I'd still rather pay extra for a Chipotle than get a freebird on the cheap. read more

Queuing for Burrito, heato Burrito? 93 feet east but my two were in the queue, below a bladder full of free Red Stripe and pretoxics, so i slashed it out in an open windowed men's room, returned they were nearly out of rice. Burrito was as fat as a dog, but not inside (cow pork chicken choice) Had the full heat, black beans, stuffed it down opposite two drunk frenchies slightly envious of my mouth haul, buried in my gut. It was good enough to pay for, but why in Camden? Is there a Camden demand? Can they stand the Camden demand, or is it unplanned? It sits in the hand but nests in the gullet unlike a bird or a bush. read more

Woahhh Nelly! These are good burritos. But watch out, it would appear Freebird have some competition on Rupert street now. A malay/thai curry place has setup shop RIGHT opposite the burrito stand. Haven't tried it yet, but i wonder how this will impact business? Probably not much at all. These are the best burritos in town hands down. read more

I've been an occasional at Freebird for a while now, but I'd love to be a regular. It's a small stand tucked just off Brewer Street on Rupert Street. Freebird are about as good as it gets for London burritos (I've had SF Mission based burritos and these are not too far behind in terms of tastiness!). For a fair price £5-6, you get a hefty burrito made freshly in front of you, piled high with generous portions of either beef, pork or chicken (or veggie for those who are so inclined). Guac is optional and well worth adding! They are speedy (and that's a good thing considering how popular they are), friendly and a great lunch option. Anyone who considers themselves a fan of Mexican food needs to try this place. read more

The wrap was good and didn't taste of preservatives as some others. The condiments (black beans, tomato salad, lettuce) were good too, although the lettuce was turning brown. What really disappointed me was the braised pork: absolutely tasteless. But the staff is friendly and it's slightly cheaper then other places. read more

I visited the Freebird burrito stall at Exmouth Market today, while wrapping my porky treat the burrito merchant snapped my lunch which resulted in a re-wrap situation, during this process a good portion of my pork stayed in the old tin-foil which I pointed out, this was met with a laugh by the merchant as he continued to wrap my lunch. I then vented my frustration to the que behind me, to no avail. Good tasting food but the burrito construction left a bad taste in my mouth. Daddy Donkey next time I think. read more
