1/2 chicken ciabatta and 1/2 ham and cheese toastie

The ham and cheese toastie (toasted) is literally the best sandwich I have ever had in my life. This is a life changing sandwich.

Yayayayayayayayayayayayayayayay!…read more I found a place that sells healthy & reasonably-priced salads to go right here in W1! I thought I would never see this day... Goodge Place Market is a tiny food market in the likes of its bigger siblings like Leather Lane & Whitecross Markets in Easternish London. Here they only have a total of six stalls, but all of them serve delicious foods: - Burritos (Freebird Burritos) - Salad Boxes (£ 4.50 per box) - Thai food (Simply Thai) - Falafel (Hoxton Beach) - Köfte wraps/sandwiches That's really all I could've wished for...I feel so blessed having discovered this market!

By the time I'd reached Goodge Place, I'd walked in and out of more than a few chain shops, unable to find something which ticked both the 'affordable' and 'healthy' boxes. Then I came across this market. I spied a salad stall, and decided to go for that. After all, it was pretty decently priced at £4 for a large box of sundried tomatoes, cous cous, aubergines, beans and other vegetables. To my surprise, the salad also came with a thick chunk of Turkish bread, which made it even better value for money. There's an assortment of other stalls here as well - Mexican, Thai, falafels - and they're here Monday to Friday.

Now, don't be fooled into comparing this London incarnation to the 2 famous Philly Cheesesteak venues because those 2 spots are tourist traps. The meat is in abundance & while I'm not so sure these are authentic Amoroso rolls, they are pretty darn close. Things your cheesesteak should be...Cooked using water - yup, oil is not used in the hoody versions; have a mouth-watering smell of flavour when you unwrap it. Hot, flavourful; meat, cheese and onions should become one unit of deliciousness. These are defo delicious but didn't have the steam aroma when I unwrapped it & they're cooked using oil but were not greasy - thank goodness. Original cheesesteaks may be cooked with mushrooms or hots and the ketchup and/or mustard are added before the meat goes onto the roll. These guys don't offer those varieties but I assure you, these are darn good versions of my beloved Philly Original. I noticed they're offering the Philly pork sandwich so I'll be back to sample that too. Well done guys, very well done! P.S. If in the future you can master the Philly Cheesesteak Hoagie, you'll get an instant 5 Star review.

So I was quite surprised when I saw Liberty Cheesesteak in the listing of places at the Yelp Red event. Immediately I started Googling and found out that a) they looked like some tasty cheesesteaks and b) that I wasn't going to be able to try it until at the Yelp event. My other half was able to try it out though before the event and was suitably impressed. I was so excited to try and eagerly went for my cheesesteak taster and thought, meh. It's fine but a bit dry or something. My husband though insisted it was just because of the making-ahead-bulk-nature of trying to feed eleventy million hungry Yelpers at once and that it was better fresh. So today I hopped on a bus at lunchtime to go to the Mayfair Market at Brown Hart Gardens. Never had been there before and I was impressed with the location - up a flight of stairs, but loads and loads of seating and generally relaxed, with a handful of food choices. Of course for me there was no choice, just meeeeaaaattttt. I found the tiny stand and determined that no one was queuing to order, and eagerly placed my order for a half with onions and cheese whiz. There were about 10 orders ahead of me but the line cleared quickly and I soon had my sandwich. There was a small mix up and I ended up with a whole instead of a half. Such mistakes are fine by me! I was rewarded for my persistence. The meat was well seasoned with a nice peppery taste, and the Italian roll soft but chewy in a nice way. The onions were soft but not sweet, and the whiz was savoury and salty and unhealthy tasting, just like I wanted. 2 tiny niggles were that I had a couple of pieces of meat that could have been trimmed a bit better - but I'm a complete fuss pot and no one else would probably notice. And I would have liked more cheese. But I always want more cheese, and I'm sure if I asked for heavy on the cheese next time that I wouldn't be denied. Definitely better than the cheesesteak I had in Philadelphia from Geno's. Now to just figure out how to follow them around and be a cheesesteak groupie without seeming like a weirdo...

Thankfully they had the traditional sign of a decent bit of street food - a large queue. Wisdom of crowds and all that. It was well organised - you queue on one side, order the wrap and pay (I opted for the lamb and paid an extra pound for halloumi as well). Then you get given a little ticket and enter the next queue for collection. In that time, the pizza/wrap is moved over to the right side and heated up on a large hot plate. Quite how the chap keeps track of which order is which I'll never know, but it's an impressive system. Toppings are pretty much the norm if you've ever had a Turkish kebab of any type, but the one thing I really liked was that they chopped the cucumber and tomato up and mixed them together - so it was like you got a Greek salad of sorts added to the wrap. So mine came to £7 including the halloumi, which for street food isn't a bad deal. It's big but I found that it wasn't that filling - although that could have been my subconscious demanding that I go and get a second one because it was really delicious. The bread/base was light and airy, the salad was crisp and gave a good variety of texture next to the cheese. Really, really good and very much reminded me of my time in Istanbul last year - it certain compares quite admirably with the good food I ate out there.

They rotate through different flavors, and when I found them at Maltby Market, they had the following flavors: Bacon & Maple Syrup, Treacle Tart, Salted Caramel, Peanut Butter, Bounty, and a Double Chocolate. The Bounty and Treacle Tart seemed to be newer / seasonal flavors, and I think they always have the Salted Caramel. We tried 3 flavors: Salted Caramel, Peanut Butter and Bacon & Maple Syrup, The Salted Caramel was my favorite, followed by the Bacon one and then Peanut Butter, but I feel like you can't go wrong with any of them. Salted Caramel - Seemed richer and almost fudgy, with a layer of salted caramel in the middle. It was amazing and I could have eaten several of these if I had it in front of me. Bacon & Maple Syrup - Sometimes when you get bacon-flavored things, you wonder where the bacon is, but that was not the case here. The brownie was pretty fudgy here too, and dense. There were pieced of candied bacon sprinkled within the brownie and pieces of it on top too. Super unique and one of the better bacon-desserts I've had. Peanut Butter - I like peanut butter and chocolate - this brownie was sightly more on the cakey side than the other ones. It was good, but compared to the other ones, not my favorite. You can't go wrong with brownies from here - you can get a box of 16 bites, and they were nice enough to make a smaller box with 3 flavors (12 bites) -- basically 3 brownies cut in 4 pieces. This would make an excellent dessert to bring to a dinner party, or just to indulge yourself. The salted caramel one is voted best brownie in London, and I can believe it. It might just be the best salted caramel brownie in the world. I would definitely come back to get the salted caramel brownie on my next trip to London.

He'd decided on a selection box with 5 flavours: chocolate; peanut; fruit & nut; caramel; and lime & coconut. They were all nicely decorated and a little bit 'rustic' rather than perfectly square. My favourite was the peanut, followed by the chocolate. Rather than being plain, the latter was actually packed with flavour, and the peanut retained its moisture rather than becoming dry. The texture of each piece was excellent, with a crunchy top, though the soft caramel was slightly too cloying for my personal taste. It's always fun to try somewhere new and this was a great new name to know.

Well, I don't know what's happened lately, but every burrito I've gotten here recently has kicked ass. Maybe it's because I'm going earlier and beating the rush. Maybe it's because the ingredients are very good quality. Maybe it's because they don't skimp on the good stuff (meat, guacamole, pico de gallo, fajita veggies, etc). They roll fatties. In fact, I've had a few Freebird burritos fall apart on me. That's OK. If my burrito must fail, let it fail due to its ambition. I've often lamented the politeness of competing burritos, so let it be known that Freebird suffers from no such good manners. I'd really wanted samphire and tartar sauce but he'd run out of samphire. The burgers were excellent, despite being fried in batter, they still had a great crab flavour and it went well with the wasabi mayo (can't comment on the other one, my dad all but inhaled it). Coincidentally, we ended up there on Sunday, and I ended up going again, but he still didn't have samphire... It was a popular combination! And each time I was turning up around 3/4pm, well into the day. So I tried the pomegranate combination, which again was fantastic. The following Friday, I ended up at Rupert Street market for lunch with colleagues, and guess who was there? Crabbieshack! Did he have Samphire and Tartar sauce? yes to the first but no to the second! I still ended up with a burger though... 4 crabs in 3 meetings. But the following week, Douglas kept some aside for me and I finally got what I craved. Worth the wait? You better believe it! He's not always at Rupert Street Market, but can be found at Kerb at various locations (check their website). I voted for him at the British Street Food awards and he's just won the London heat! Don't actually know how many crabs I've eaten from him now... just that I will probably be eating from there again the next time I see the stand!

It had about 5 or 6 stalls and immediately I spotted crab. It's hard to find good a good fish sometimes but I love food that is quite unique so the crab burger was on that I had to get. A normal crab burger on its own was £7.50. But pricey but a double was £11 so I thought what the hey and leave the fries and just double up. A crab deep fried in battle. The chilli coriander and wasabi Mayo defo gives it an edges I I could go for this sauce. It was very good. Very messy though. Can't help feel some street food vendors should show a bit more value with a side added for free or a more reasonable price. Seeing as I've been to all over America I know you could get this and fries for about £10 at most. Expensive lunch. It was near the city workers so might be a target but it was very good. I'd love to try their crab salad for £7 and see how much meat you get with that.
